I ended up doing exactly this as SoCal civic dealers were charging full sticker and only budging about $800 MAX. I was able to score a 06 Accord EX 5sp sedan for $19,269 + TTL. vs a Civic EX 5sp sedan for $18,764. The much bigger car with only a slight penalty in MPG one me out for the ~$500 difference in price.
what's best is that i walked in there with cap one pre approved blank check for my financing and they beat the rate i got by .25% not much but decided to go with the dealer for incentive that they didn't try to play tricks with the internet quote they gave me.
i went with 0 down for 6 yrs financing at $ 348 per month ( don't have the contract in front of me since i'm at work, but i believe my rate was around 5.7%, would be lower if i went with 60 mos ) . let me know if any wants the hook up to the fleet manager i worked with, be glad to spread the deal.

So many people get caught up in wanting the latest and greatest and there is nothing wrong with that. If you're willing to look at another make or model, you can use this to your advantage. The Civic is a hot model right now and the issue is really supply and demand. Once the supply catches up, the prices will eventually drop below MSRP. The hard thing is that there is no formula to predict when the supply will catch up. As far as I'm concerned, right now is a great time for an Accord buyer because a.) another year and the model will be revamped b.) the new Camry is out and people are interested in it c.) the new Civic is Honda's hotest seller right now and d.) both Honda and Toyota are getting competition from other makes (ie Nissan, Hyundai, etc).
Bottom line is that I would really have to like the car a lot to justify spending extra money to pay MSRP. Dealerships are not going to deal much on Civics because they know they can get MSRP right now. Accords on the other hand, while good sellers, they are not as in demand and there is plenty of supply available.
Good luck.
We are going to test drive Coupe LX auto tomorrow. I'm wondering about some of these fees. Since I'm a woman (and really DON'T know much about cars), I want some ammunition. Dealerships around here (all makes) have a destination fee of almost $900 (location is 90 miles from both Birmingham, AL and Atlanta, GA.) while edmunds says $550. What does this cover, and is this something that is negotiable? Plus, what is this hold back % I've heard about? Also, is it really that important where the car was made: Japan, US, or Cananda? BTW, I am approved for a Capital One Auto Loan "Blank Check" (5.89%) and can pay on the spot.
My trouble is that I get so excited about buying something new (remember, I am a female) that I have a hard time walking away from a buy. My husband says they hook me like a fish and reel me in every time. However, we've visited the dealership twice this month (on Sunday, when closed, on 4th & 18th) and have seen the same five Civics on the lot [2 coupe lx (1 in the color I want-alabaster silver), 1 coupe ex, 1 sedan lx, 1 sedan ex.] I think they are not moving as fast now as they may have been.
I've already learned from these discussions that I should not get the car "prepped"(extra 1-2 g.), not buy an extended warranty right away (if ever since I'll probably get another car at 100,000 miles), not pay more than $50 for doc. prep., try for 3-6 free oil changes, and avoid dealer-installed things like mudflaps. Am I missing anything? You guys have been great!!!
Will let you know what happens.
One thing though is there is suppose to be a new Accord in the next year.
So there should be a lot of discounting of the current year.
My point was that the Accord in the 4 cylinder model shouldn't be too far off the Civic in mileage. And as you say, and from my personal experiences thus far, there are discounts to be had on Accords right now, but I doubt the same can be said for Civics. Now obviously if all you're concerned with is MPG, then maybe the Civic is worth MSRP.
Oddly enough, my local dealership 5 mins up the street from me has 4 Civics on their lot right now. In fact, the same ones have been sitting there the past two weeks. When I first went there to look at the Civic, there was only one and it had just come off the truck. I wouldn't get too excited yet though because my guess would be the fact that they've had these Civics sitting on the lot for the past two weeks is probably because they don't want to move off of sticker price.
another thing to note is at the bottom of the manufacturer sticker- it states that the manufacturer has paid the dealer to prepare the car for delivery. so you can refer to it if the dealer tries to charge you any "prep," PDI fees.
you should know that by federal law, a dealer cannot make any changes to this sticker; usually if they want to add on some fees, they'll tack on an "official" looking sticker on the window next to the manufacturer's sticker with their additional fees. this is where you'll see markup for things like "Market Adjustment," Appearance packages, Safety packages, Accessory packages, etc.
always remember that no matter what your dealer tells you, these charges are not set in stone, not required by the federal/state gov't, Honda, your city, or anyone else.
Didn't go to test drive today. It was raining. Folks around here crash like maniacs in the rain. I don't want to take a chance.
here's something else that might come in handy- this link provides the MSRP pricing for dealer-installed accessories such as the wheel locks. while MSRP for these accessories is still pretty high, it will at least give you an idea of how much they are marking up accessories on the car you are looking at.
enter your zip code and click around for car research for the Civic model you are considering.
http://www.costcoauto.com/carresearch/configurator.asp?year=2006&costcomake=14&c- - ostcomodel=2063&make=24&model=w2006k24m35&style=w2006k24m35t36
For future reference, most dealers will have no problems taking a refundable deposit on a credit card to hold or order a car- which provides another layer of protection for you.
It can't hurt to ask, I suppose. Use their argument that it's a "big seller" against them. Point out that it should not be a problem for them to sell the car to someone else for a higher price than you negotiated.
Anyway, these were his offers:
Tax 3.25%, Doc. prep. $99, Title $16.50
Civic LX Coupe $18301.-- (OTD) first choice color
Civic LX Sedan $18456.-- (OTD) second choice color
My offers to him:
Civic LX Coupe $17800(OTD)Ed. TMV $17122 +title +fee +tax rounded up
Civic LX Sedan $18000(OTD)Ed. TMV $17303 +title +fee +tax rounded up
He said my prices were not possible. I said laughingly, "Apparently they are since that's how Edmund gets their prices, from what customers pay."
Oh well, I'm still checking around, and it is getting close to the end of the month.
I've had the same problem in the past and have found sometimes the Edmunds TMV price is high and sometimes it's low. There was an interesting discussion recently about Edmunds TMV over in Purchasing Strategies.
Thanks for the mention about the Purchasing Strategies Discussion. I can hardly keep up with all of the Discussions, but I'm going to read it.
I myself have been wanting to trade in my 04 kia gs spectra for the new 06 honda. So in light of this thought i decided to get a quote from local dealers around and (im in SoCal btw) the internet quote for an ex with navi was around 18,675 incl destination. This seems like a really good deal because (almost too good to be true) its under msrp and it has navi. The internet manager also says The total price is 10% in addition to the price of the car. What exactly does that mean? add on tax titles and doc fees then multiply the total by 10%? im not sure what I want to do, but i know one things for sure im going to try and wait till the end of the year and see what happens. If that saves me a couple dollars hey, its all good. What are your experiences with some of the socal dealers? Around the Pasadena, el monte area?
I insisted multiple times that I need a honest transaction and asked the sales person to be upfront with me if there are any surprises on the vehicle. After confirming everything, drove to Stockton (90 miles) with my pregnant wife, my cousin her 6 yr old. Once I reached there the sales people started playing their games with me. The vehicle actually had 140 miles on it and it is a dealer trade in !!! The sales person and the manager came and started pushing me to take the vehicle. The manager said he would throw in a roof rack (which comes standard with the vehicle) to compensate the miles. These people think the customers are fools!!
Finally I asked him to show the carfax report on this vehicle. This vehicle had previous history in the carfax and they said it was because it was with the dealer and showing up on carfax report. But when I asked him to show the other vehicles in stock including the dealer trade ins, it wouldn't show up anything on the report.
After wasting my time with the dealership and driving 3 hours back and forth, we came back frustrated  .
I would strongly recommend to re-think if anyone is planning to buy anything from Stockton Honda.
I'm new to here and about to buy a Honda Civic LX 4dr within a week and got a quote from a local dealership (Philadelphia area), basically saying that it would be 17,560 including everything except tax and tags.
Is it a good deal this area? I'm not even looking for a best deal b/c I need a car asap.
Any input would be really appreciated.
I had a couple of tricks that I used. First, I had a Capital One auto loan blank check (5.89%) in possession as a bargaining tool. That showed I was serious (not that you are not.) Second, I never let them know if I was male or female. Third, I got low-ball quotes from dealers 100 miles away to use as bargaining chips even though I would not have gone that far unless it was like $500 below my magic number. Fourth, I had my husband call a few dealerships for phone quotes, and my dad called as well as a "buyer's rep." That way I really got 3 times the number of quotes and could pick the lowest to e-mail a competitor. Finally, I really did want to use the local dealer, and I made it clear that he would get my business for maintenance if I bought from him. I'll also be totally honest with you. I really did not think I was going to get my price.
But, I'd e-mail back something like,"Wow! $1880 is your Internet monthly special. That price is $350 above the MRSP. The OTD price I'm willing to pay is Edmund's TMV $18000. So and So Honda has already offered $18300 for two cars in their lot (stock #01234 & 1235.) Plus, they are 10 miles from my house. I need you to do better than that for my business. I'm ready to write my Capital One blank check as soon as you can meet my number." They always pretended that they didn't read all of my e-mail and never once addressed anything I said about price. Nevertheless, the price eventually went down, down, down. Maybe they could see that I really had done my research and was working hard for my price. It didn't hurt that I started e-mailing 10 days before the end of the month. You might have to wait until the end of July. It's hard to tell though. I don't know why TX would play hardball on a Civic.
Did you figure what it would be with the tax and tags? It sounds like what a lot of folks paid back a few months ago if tax is going to add about $600. Check back at all of the past posts and you might find someone from your area.
Best Wishes! Needing something ASAP almost always means paying more than what you might if you had time to search.

Let me know what everyone thinks. :confuse:
BTW, are wheel locks something you need, like for when it snows or it's required by the state. Otherwise, don't get it if you don't want it or want to pay for it.
I am looking to buy a Black LX sedan and the lowest quote so far has been $ 17600 ( base + Dest) with OTD price 19070.00 which I feel is too high. I am looking to purchase if someone comes close for $ 17100.00 ( base + Dest) thereabout.
Buyers, can you suggest what wud be the price to pay?
Thanks everyone
Have you shopped around? If you have competition, you might do a little better.. I do like that this dealer puts everything up front. The e-mail makes it sound like you can get out the door with nothing extra.
Did you ask for wheel locks? $99 bucks seems steep for 4 locking lug nuts and a key. I can't imagine there is a lot of Civic wheel thievery.. Of course, this may be there way of padding the number a little..

I welcome any comments on the deal. Is it good, average, bad?
Thanks.

In addition, the car was traded from another dealership, to get my color, and it had mud flaps already (no charge.) Plus, I got three free oil changes, and of course, a tank of gas. I did not have a trade-in because I sold my old car at a way better price than the dealership was going to give. But I couldn't blame them on that. Not many folks go to the dealership for an '01 Chevy Lumina with 146,000 m.
All in all, the experience was exhausting but not traumatic. The Internet Lead Manager was experienced and took my requests seriously. His competition almost had him beat until the very end. So kudos to Grissom Honda in Gadsden, AL for a good run. But, if you really want the deal of the century (or deal of the month in the case of buying a new car), go to Sunny King Honda in Oxford, AL. The dealership made me feel like I got a good deal and even said that the experience was all about me and what I wanted. I can't wait to put some miles on it and see how high I can make my mileage go.
One more thing, Edmunds discussion boards really taught me more than I could have imagined. Thanks to the dealers, pros, and all you 2-centers. It added up to a great deal for me.
When i bought civic lx auto in NY, I had to cough up 1440$ just for the tax.
So is it ok if I buy a car from Alabama? I will be saving around 800$ that way.
I am planning to a Honda Civic 4dr Sedan LX/EX.
Thanks.
Buying/registering/paying sales tax of another state where tax is low - I'm sure lawmakers/dealerships must have thought about it. Otherwise cars would have sold only in Oregan and Delaware (states with 0% tax)
Anyone knowing a delearship in around Atlanta giving a good price for the Honda Civic LX Sedan??
Anybody in MN has purchased a Honda Civic LX sedan A/T recently in June?
Here are the qutoes from local dealers in Minneapolis
Bloominton Honda: $ 18060 ( base+ dest), OTD price $19475.00, they refuse to come off from MSRP and I am done dealing with them.
Hopkins Honda: $ 17760 (base+dest)
Brookdale Honda: $ 17560 (base+dest)
I had a fellow Minnesotan from this forum who paid ($17623.12)OTD in March for his LX A/T sedan
Has the Market changed so much in 3 months to pay such a High price for a 2006 car? Soon in 2 months they will be advertising their 2007 model. Buyers have paid less price when this model was launched than what they are currently .
Readers from MN please let me know. AnyFeedback from readers will be very useful.
Thanks Guys!
Each dealer had only one CIVIC LX 4DR in the lot, so they are obviously selling well (all had tons of Accords sitting around).
Is it hopeless to try to put a dent in MSRP in the NY tri-state area?
