Jeep Grand Cherokee Maintenance and Repair

  • I am having a similar door lock problem - The rear left electric door lock makes a screeching noise when locked electrically and doesn't lock as the others do. But it unlocks electrically. I am told this is common. Anyone else have the problem and know a fix?
  • I have a 1996 lorado 2.5td and I cannot get the tail gate open with the handle has any one no how to undo it from the inside

Just a idea, I had the same problem with my 96 GC. First try pushing in on the tailgate as you lift the handle. If it doesn't work, try to flush out with water around the area of the handle. That seemed to work for me. After I got it to open, I used some 10w40 to lube the latch. Haven't had a problem since. Hope this helps.
  • I have a 2003 JGC Limited. I am having a problem with the climate control. The drivers side works fine, but the passenger side is not working correctly. No matter how warm the engine temp is, no matter how high I turn up the passenger side heat, it blows cold air. The fan seems to be working, it blows more cold air as I turn the fan higher. The defroster blows cold air as well. Has anybody seen this problem before? Or, know what is causing it? The dealer wants $85 just to look at it. I don't want to spend $85 for something that is a quick fix. Plus I want to know what the problem is, if and when I do take it to the dealer. Thanks for any help with this matter.

The symptoms as you've described them lead me to believe that your problem is associated with what is called the Blend Door. Many JGC Limited's that are equipped with the Automatic Climate Control have this problem. My '02 Overland was doing the exact same thing. I was out of about $300 parts and labor to get mine fixed.
  • I have a 2001 JGC, I have the radio/cd player go bad and the dealer replaced it "Three" times. It is now out of warranty guessed it , it has gone bad again and they won't replace it. I can't get DimelerChrysler to tell me anything about the radio/cd players. Has anyone had this problem? I hate to spend money to replace the cd player if there is something making them go bad or is Jeep just using inferior products in their vehicles!
  • I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The automatic transmission shift lever keeps coming loose. I called AAA to tow me since the car would not crank over at all.The guy who came out went under the car directly under the shifter and said the bolt needed to be tightened and that something had slipped off. Does anyone know the name of the part I'm referring to? I went under the car with the guy to see what he was doing but when I got home I couldn't find it. I'd like to be able to tell my auto shop what to look for. Thanks.
  • I too am wondering about the maintenance schedule on the axles. If I had to choose a schedule, I guess I would choose B because of stop and go driving. But I don't tow often or do much off roading so I figured I would just do it once a year which would be 20-25k miles for me. It seems simple enough to do myself in the garage.

Has anyone else done this? I was thinking I would drain the oil by using a "sucker", it's shaped like a giant needle with a rubber hose on the end of it. Stick that in the fill hole, suck it out, replace it with new, shouldn't cost more than $20 for the oil? That's how we used to change the oil in gearboxes on farm equipment.
  • In the morning after sitting out all night the car usually starts up OK. If I Drive it for a short period (say 20 minutes), then shut it down, and then start it right back up (after only a few minutes) it usually starts up OK. But if you shut it down and it sits for about 1.25 to 1.5 hours and then you try to start it, the starter will crank but the engine won't fire up. If you leave it sit for about 2.5 to 3.0 hours and then try it, then it usually starts right up. I replaced the crank sensor and pick up and it didn't help. Though that did take care of the problem of the car dying while driving it.

It seems that when my 97 Cherokee is standing still (but engine running) the radiator cooling fan cycles on and off several times a this a common occurrence or is the thermostat messed up.....????

  • I just bought a Jeep cherokee 2005, it was the DEMO car so it had about 4000 miles. About three weeks after I bought it started stalling. The car just dies all of the sudden, it seems like someone just turned the key in the off position. It has happened well over a dozen times but onlky once on the high way. I've taken the car to jeep but since it hasnt happened when they drive it they said that can't do anything about it. Any suggestion or ideas what it could be?
  • I seem to have the same problem with my 2005 jgc. I've taken it back 4 times to the dealership and they cant figure out is going on. They said that the computer has no signs of anything being wrong. Last Sunday it happend to me ofr teh first time while I was on the HW going 65mph. I've also been looking for people with the smae problem

does anyone konw where the mass air flow sensor is on a 96' JGC? i am having the hardest time finding it anywhere. any help would be awesome... :confuse:
  • you have a faulty thermostat. replace it, and that should fix the problem.

I hope this helps you, and good luck m8.
  • Your idea on the oil syphon is a good one, and go ahead and do that. Make sure you get the correct lubricant, as most of these differientials have different properties to them. Talk to your dealership about what type of diffs you have in front and rear, as you may need friction modifier for either the rear diff, or front diff. Most times, you can get after market lubricants from any auto parts store, but be wary, some differiential manufactures require that you use a specific brand, as these have "secret" properties to keep that differential in good working order.

i hope this helps you, and good luck m8.
  • This sounds like a classic problem of the idle air control sensor. You may need to replace the sensor, or just clean the sensor, and the sensor hole where it mates to the throttle body. There are other posts that i have posted explaining this exact problem, and solution. Go check them out around late october, early november.

I hope this helps you, and good luck m8.
  • yes. But to be sure that you c.c is indeed bad, kick the c.c and listen for a rattle. If it rattles from inside, then it needs to be replaced.

I hope this helps you, and good luck m8.
  • Hello,
Quick and to the point..1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee 152,000 miles. I suspect fuel pump. I half to turn key to on postion for at least 20+ second before fuel pumps kicks in. Checked fuses, relays seams o.k. After it does kick in I have no problem starting...until it sits for a while sometimes overnight or could be 30 mins. or 1 hour can you offer help ?
New fuel filter, injet. cleaner no help.
No problems until cold weather set in.
  • I have a 2001 Jeep Gr Cherokee LTD and am having the same problem as my co-worker who has the same year and model. It sounds like this blend door problem. Do you think there is a flaw in the part or just age of the part?

  • My son has a 1990 jeep cherokee with a 4 cylinder. When he first starts the vehicle it runs very rough then after it warms up a bit will run fine. When he shuts it off and tries to restart it (warm start) sometimes he has to wait before it will start. It has died on him just like it was shut off while driving it a couple of times. I told him to try replacing the Fuel Pump relay but he doesn't know which relay it is. Does anyone know which relay is for the fuel pump
  • i had the same problem with my 95 jgc. i had to take the liner off and attach a nut to the mechanism. it had slipped off so it wasn't pulling right when i pulled on the handle.
  • it should be under the lid for the relays. or tell him to get a chiltons book.

I am making notes here if I do mine again at 120,000 miles. My dealer cornered me to do it at 60,000 and with a coupon got that and transaxle (2nd time) done for $180. But your idea is good now that my Jeep Laredo I6 goes out of extended warranty Dec 21, she is 5 years old ! Stuff like this will get me to visit my small town mechanic who is a friend and charges about 1/3 dealer labor rate plus I can buy my own parts. Just hope nothing major goes wrong ... I maybe paid for the $800 the extended major coverage warranty cost me (ie, it was not just engine/drivetrain warr, maxcare?) with a few things the past 2 years after the 3/36 ran out, but in general it's been a pretty good vehicle to us, I'd rate quality a B-. Ask me in 2 more yrs!
  • What exactly is the brake light switch? Where do I find it? I have a 2000 Jeep GC that currently has no brake lights and I can't find that any of the fuses are blown. I am wondering what else it could be.
