With the discussion on braking vs downshifting on downhill grades, I was wondering if CVT's did downshifting going downhill like conventional auto transmissions. Can you put a CVT in low? Anyone know? Thanks.

The CVT in my wife's Outback has the ability to be overridden. There are paddles on the steering wheel. I can downshift on demand.

My 535d needed service, so it went to the dealer. Our loaner is an X-1 with 370 miles on it. White with light beige interior (Oyster?) but at least it does have black carpet. I don't know what options it has, but it does not have nav.. I can't tell if the seats are leather or not, so maybe no premium package.
I only drove it home from the dealer (25 miles), but first impressions are that it's not for me. Rear visibility isn't very good through the odd shaped rear window, and no back up camera! It rides OK, but it is small and the short, flat seats didn't feel as nice as I would have hoped for in a BMW.
I think that my wife may return it (if my car is ready today) so I don't know if I'll get more seat time.

But, I can't figure out what kind of car that is was. Any idea? It looks like a Bentley or something with that roofline and the gas tank on the rear fender. It looks too big to be a PT Cruiser.

No explaination necessary since I almost never go into that profile.

I don't know what that car is but it's definitely not a PT Cruiser.

It your CVT really downshifting since there are no gears? I know some CVTs have computer programs that mimic gear shift "bump" but isn't it all just a computer artifact?

Late to this discussion but echo driver100, what advantages would the paddles give you over sport mode? Is it just the ability to rev higher or keep it in the same gear?

You are correct - computer software makes the CVT "feel" like a regular automatic transmission. Even when we don't override it. But, it still allows for engine braking, which is useful when the snow starts to fly.

Not all transmissions are created equal, and not all cars have a "sport mode."

In my previous 135, sport mode locked out 6th gear. I found that annoying and silly, so I always used the paddles in that car. I didn't use it much in my V sport because that worked very well in sport mode. The one annoying habit it had, however, was holding a low gear after a strong braking event. So, for example, someone stops short in front of you. You brake hard and then when you go to move again, the car thinks you are racing and holds the low gear. So I got into the habit of manually upshifting in those cases.

How is it that sub 20k cars have backup cams and high level "ultimate driving machines" costing double don't. It is just a crazy thing to me... pretty saying F-U pony up and spend more to get the stuff that "lesser" cars have.

They seem to think I am a good candidate and I think I convinced them that I need it fixed. So now we wait for the decision of the jury.

There you go, universal health care working as it should. And good luck on an affirmative decision from the so-called death panel.

Well so much for a weekend of car shopping. A few weeks ago my neighbor started a big project to regrade his yard and install a French drain around his house. His yard is absolutely a mess and apparently we are getting some strong storms (I'm in NC for work). My wife called me to tell me our patio was flooded out and has 2 inches of solid mud caked on it, mulch washed into the grass, mud in the flower beds, and the garden was partially wiped out. So instead of car shopping I'll be spending most of the day cleaning up a mess that quite frankly would have been entirely avoidable had he finished the project instead of left it half completed to work on another day :@

I'd video and photograph the damage. Invite neighbor over to inspect damage for his insurance to compensate. Also photo the changes he made without provision for runoff control on HIS property. 

I notice all the effort made on construction projects to control the runoff and prevent dirt from being washed into the runoff. He likely has similar responsibility. Did his work require and did he get a permit from your municipality?

Talking about that X1 rental...I had one about a year ago. Also, a stripper. I missed the extras, like a back up camera, but the X1 was a lot of fun to drive, especially compared to the hulky Chrysler 300 or Ford Fusion that stalled in the middle of the road going up a hill.

They must use the strippers for rentals and to advertise a low price.

That is exactly why I think paddles are useless. Unless you are roadrunner and like to go into the turns at 80 mph. In your case, use Sport mode and the car would just perform normal after hard breaking. And, if you are in sport mode....you shouldn't need 6th gear....you aren't driving to gain an economical advantage.....you want the pick up lower gears offer.

Now that you mention it....I think I see it. The trunk has been rounded and the cover on the filler cap is gone. The rounded rear window looks kind of like a Civic.

Came out of a Tim Horton's Coffee Place today and saw this. I wanted to talk to the driver but he wasn't around....waited almost 10 minutes, The dog was so good, just sat there!

I think that prestige badges are acting just like mainstream badges, and are making low spec cars for fleet/loaner use, and maybe for the "one in stock" screamer lease deal car.

I can't see why anyone would shun a backup cam, unless they are making some kind of stripped down track rat (a mommyish X1 certainly isn't one of those - with the sight lines in modern cars of that type, a cam would be handy indeed).

I do like to go into turns at 80.

I'm not following your regarding performing normal after hard breaking. That is exactly what that car did NOT do.

Sport mode speeds up kick down, which I find very useful on the highway. So full auto in the 135i was only accomplished in "regular mode" and I did not like regular mode, hence being in manual mode almost exclusively in that car. My Caddy would go up to 8th gear in sport mode. I always drove that car in sport mode because it also firmed up the suspension.

Had just come out of the gym and gotten into the car this morning when I heard a noise from the street behind me. Turned around a saw a car going down the street, but it didn't look like it was just driving by. Was sort of out of place. Then another noise. When I pulled out and swung around...


Further observation revealed the source of the first noise... about 50 yards or so back up the hill, this car had apparently crossed to the wrong side of the road, went up on the curb, took out a street sign and uprooted a small tree, then came back across the road, up another curb, partially pushing over the fire hydrant that stopped the adventure. No broken water line, at least not before I left.

Not to judge books by their cover, but if I had to guess, I thinking there's a good chance the driver was carrying little to no insurance coverage.

Police, fire police and the water authority responded to the scene.

That seems odd in broad daylight. I wonder what incapacities the driver was operating the vehicle under?

I saw the driver get out of the vehicle, no obvious impairment, so I'm thinking cell phone is a possibility

Speaking of which, the news had a story tonight on a 27 year old truck driver who rear ended and killed someone on I-90 because he was shopping online. He was doing a survey at the time. Unbelieveable.

I think whenI go back to work as a driver next year I'll list "unable to text" as a job skill.

When coming to a ridiculously slow or stopped speed on the freeway, especially when sudden, or one particular lane with others moving normally (at much higher speeds), be advised to look in your rear-view mirror, be situationally aware, and prepared to dodge a potential rear-ender. While it may be a semi's fault for rear-ending you (almost always the rear-ending car's fault), you won't collect the money because you'll be dead.

Even an inattentive driver should notice a BIG RIG bearing down at them at full speed from behind. Inattentive is not as bad as oblivious.

I think it might be fun for all us old guys to list the procedure they have had that they hated the most. I'll start. A few years ago, I had an endorectal coil balloon MRI. The surgeon wanted a better look at my prostate before surgery. So, I had a coil mechanism in a balloon inserted you know where. They inflated the balloon and put me in the MRI machine. The real bad part (!!) was that they had to pull me out of the MRI to reposition the coil so things would show up better. Not just once - they had to pull me out SEVEN times and reposition it before they finally did the MRI. They said my surgeon was a real perfectionist. After it was all over, I told the technicians if they were pranking me and this showed up in YouTube, I would be back to pummel them. After that, everything was a breeze.

Oh no!! I jinxed myself. I just got a call from one of my doctor's offices and he wants me to do this STUPID invasive MRI again. NOOOO!! I'm considering telling him I won't do it, but that will mean a big argument with the wife. I wonder how much of this is real need for me versus needing to be sure they make their revenue goal this quarter. :@

Problem: You see a semi behind you not slowing down as you brake aggressively for stopped traffic. Do you swerve to the right if that's the open berm of the roadway and dodge the car in front of you only to have the inattentive semi driver dodge to the right and hit you? OR do you stay where you are. I saw a semi driver who died a few years back during some construction slowdowns on I70. He noticed the cars/trucks stopping in front of him and hit a concrete support pillar for the road overhead. I actually heard the impact from our home and biked over to see what had happened.

I recall years before that the pickup truck driver on his way to work in the morning who was squeezed (pancaked) between two semi trucks where the rear one didn't feel it necessary to stay attentive and slow down.
I stay behind a semi rather than moving up and getting between two semis on our local interstates for that reason.

It's all marketing.

Recently Mercedes was able to hit the $29,995 price point with their CLA as long as you didn't get it with any options, including forgoing metallic paint. The luxury makes are trying to hit these price goals with their great cars, but most know it'll cost much more to get the whole deal.

Now with cheap cars, you could be sold a pile of crap, but they market that it has 24 cameras, with 13 speakers, 5 drive modes, 9 speeds, and 24 standard "options," but you still have a pile of crap moving it along the roadway.

That's where very fast acceleration could come in handy, you get out of Dodge in a hurry, and don't look back at which direction the truck swerves.

In CA a construction company can be fined massively for allowing any "brown" water to leave the site! You are not allowed to let natural dirt/soil/dust go down the storm drains or off the site without being cleaned/treated/filtered/retained.

Why would you not want one of the greatest inventions of all time? Do you know little kids get run over every year....because you can't see directly behind you.

I wonder how many people are STILL ran over from drivers backing up, because they don't "LOOK" behind them before reversing. Also, throw in people that don't bother to look at the screen and do have a back up cam (similar to not looking at all). Also, sometimes I've noticed I'm ready to back up 2 seconds before the car's computer has finished booting up, or the monitor is ready to show me what's going on.

Depending on how good a neighbor he is you should have the damage repaired professionally and then send him the bill. Has he offered to make you whole?

Could be lots of reasons for that rear ending that don't fault the Honda. Break down or slowing on a ramp come to mind. My niece was rear ended at the stop at the bottom of a highway ramp. Garbage truck driver was probably doing the same thing.

A CDL driver bears a greater responsibility just because of the potential carnage he can do.

They charged that truck driver in NY with manslaughter.

What's involved in an invasive MRI? Curious because I just came back from an MRI on the wife because of a possible small stroke.

Boy getting old sucks. That's why I decided to get younger every day instead.

Must be working because my wife calls me childish all the time.

I'm not following your regarding performing normal after hard breaking. That is exactly what that car did NOT do.

Sport mode speeds up kick down, which I find very useful on the highway. So full auto in the 135i was only accomplished in "regular mode" and I did not like regular mode, hence being in manual mode almost exclusively in that car. My Caddy would go up to 8th gear in sport mode. I always drove that car in sport mode because it also firmed up the suspension.

I didn't use it much in my V sport because that worked very well in sport mode. The one annoying habit it had, however, was holding a low gear after a strong braking event. So, for example, someone stops short in front of you. You brake hard and then when you go to move again, the car thinks you are racing and holds the low gear

OK, I got rushed so it is in sport mode and if you brake hard and then you start up again the car goes to a lower gear and stays there.

I find similar irregularities, like I use sport mode to enter a highway, I get ahead of upcoming traffic but car in front isn't going to fast, I slow down and the transmission does some heavy duty shifting...probably to find the correct gear.

I just think nothing is perfect, the sport mode and the horsepower are great and get me onto the highway, they are powerful tools though, and they just react to the conditions. I would rather have SM and suffer the consequences.
That may be what we are talking about or I may have missed the point.

Note: I have had to read posts quickly, my older brother should go into a retirement home but me and my younger brother have gone to hell and back trying to convince him to leave his apartment and go to a retirement home. We have had meetings and emails....he says he is ready to do it and then backs out....several times now.

SOLD! I finally transferred the title today. Funny thing, I got multiple inquiries after I agreed on the price on Monday. Looks like I priced it to go, but could have easily sqeezed another 1000 bucks, or so. Cars like (now former) mine are really hard to find, the number of potentially interested people is also small, but it looks like it's still much greater than the available units. It's done.

I guess I have to change the picture to the Grand Coupe and the bottom note, too.
