In Michigan you can get your learner's permit at 14 and 9 months.
Pretty soon, when the County issues a birth certificate, a learner's permit will be attached along with a voter registration form as well as discount coupons to purchase the Child's first car.  Just a matter of time.

On another subject, I heard Apple is coming out with 2 new phones over the next couple of months - an 8 and 8+ For around $700-$850 as well as an "X" for a thousand bucks.  The X has no home button - facial recognition only.  Is there no end to this iPhone madness?

I should have moved to Seattle when I thought about it in the late 80s, when there were lots of good jobs popping up, but still cheap houses.

Definitely should have. Wife and I are house hunting right now for a bigger place in the suburbs (we live in Seattle proper right now) and the cost is astounding. That said, our current house has appreciated almost 40 percent in the 3.5 years we have owned it, so it isn't all bad...

We're in Issaquah and hardly does a day go by without a random call from some RE agent that says they have a cash buyer. A neighbor was told " Name your price" and he did! They were planning a move to Spokane in a few months but he picked a number that he thought was 200,000 more than it was worth! Two days later the house was sold for his price! NUTS!

When we were looking at suburbs to move to, Issaquah was pretty high up on the list. However, we've decided to look in the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park area because it is better for my wife's commute and it is much closer to our friends and family. It also happens to be a bit more affordable compared to Issaquah.

    How do you pronounce "Issaquah"?

Wouldn't want to live there because I would never be able to spell it.

ISS-ah-qwah. That's a native American word for "it's raining" (no, I just made that up). You can also say IS-eh-qwa and get away with it.

To recap a bit, a couple of weeks ago when we were visiting one of my kids, she complained that her 2013 Escape was making a thumping noise over bumps.
Definitely heard it and thought it could suspension related.
While we were taking a break after a hike, I noticed one side of the under engine tray was hanging down.
Eventually, she admitted she ran over a piece of wood and the noise started after that.
Before we left, I was able to secure it with a couple of zip ties.

She took it to the dealer today to have it looked at. Since the Escape is 5 years old and headed for a Wisconsin winter, I recommended getting a new battery, too.
Replacing all 7 mounting clips plus labor was about $30 and a new 84 month battery was less than a $100 with the core exchange.

Pulled up behind this at a red light today. I couldn't get a better picture.

It has Illinois plates on it. That's a long way to drive, from Illinois to middle PA since it doesn't look like it has a top or side windows. It has snaps along the rear, behind the driver, but it looks like it's for a toneau cover. Hard to say, but cool for around here. I doubt you could register it in Pennsylvania.

One of the qualifications was an excellent mass transit system---you would think that would eliminate most American cities right there except NY, Boston and Chicago. San Francisco's stinks, and Denver's is even worse.
Unfortunately, Boston is not interested. The unemployment rate here is so low that an influx of 50K new jobs would drive up wages and inflation, not to mention housing.

Besides, Boston is a major, if not the major technology and innovation engine behind Amazon's explosive growth.

Thanks but no thanks Amazon. Our Governor is not in the mood for giving tax breaks especially after the expensive GE move to Boston. Perhaps Atlanta might make a strong bid.

The feature of the iphone7 I don't care for are the ear bud sticks instead of a cord. I'm sure I'd lose them in 10 minutes. So I'm sticking with the 6 for now. I'm sure eventually I'll give in though. It is a better camera.

you can still use the other style earbuds on a cord. Just need to use the little adapter gizmo that goes into the lightning plug.

I have an iPhone 7+ and it came standard with earphones that are plugged into the phone.  The earphones that are wireless is a high cost option.  I would not want those sticks because I, too, would lose them.

Hey Mike, I really felt bad for your slow down on your trip home because of all of those out of state bucket trucks and tree company trucks jamming up your traffic. Without them I wonder how long it would take to get power back on for thousands of homes not as lucky as you.

When I saw all those trucks, I was thrilled that so many states and companies were coming to our aid.  The fact that traffic was at a crawl did not upset me - I was just worried that I'd have to pull over because I needed a rest.  No question that those trucks were a sight for sore eyes.

I was merely stating a fact - I was not criticizing the trucks.  Perhaps my statement about the traffic snarls could have been better stated - but it was a horrendous drive.

ISS-ah-qwah. That's a native American word for "it's raining" (no, I just made that up). You can also say IS-eh-qwa and get away with it.

Wiki suggest that the word means " a local Native American name, meaning either "the sound of birds", "snake", or "little stream"."

Yesterday evening, as we were driving out of a restaurant parking lot, we saw a car that was trying to go forward into the end parking spot. He caught his wheels on the cement curb at the end of the parking spaces....he went forward and back a few times. He hit the car next to him a few times. I pulled over to watch what he would do next. He parked in another space, walked past the hit car, and entered the building.

We drove by the two cars, got the license number and the brand of cars. We left a note on the hit car, but a few blocks away I realized I didn't leave a phone number in case they needed me as a witness.

I called the restaurant and gave them the information, and I wrote to the city police department and gave them the information.

I wonder if he reported it.....it shows how easy it is for something to happen.

There is very little originality in car design, these days. The Regal was designed in Europe, so it makes sense that some elements were, ahem, 'borrowed' from other makes.

This isn't really new - we can look at Japanese mid-sized sedans from the 90's and see a lot of similarities between them.

I do believe the gap is closing between "mainstream" brands and "premium" brands. Honda, in particular, has made it hard for folks to trade up to the TLX from the Accord. The only big differences is that the TLX still has a V6 (the 2018 Accord does not), and the TLX can be had with AWD. Are those two features worth $7-10K? I suspect that for a lot of car shopping folks - those that are still looking at sedans, that is - the answer is a resounding "no".

Those spoiled buy luxurious interiors are not likely to be happy in the older Accords. However, a TLX would still be satisfying for people used to a certain higher standard. Is a better interior worth $7-$10K? Depends on every person's value system, and how cheap the cheaper car's interior is, and how nice the luxury interior is.

Acura has a longer warranty too, and probably a free loaner program. There are no free lunches. The lower priced cars had to cost cut something to get there.
I never quite got it as far as "luxurious interiors" are concerned. If the seats are comfortable and fit me I'm good. After all, you are sitting there looking out the windshield and that's the same in any car.

I guess if you are concerned what your neighbor thinks about your car it's OK to spend thousands of dollars more.
That makes sense, you own every Subaru except the one with a nice interior (Outback).:open_mouth:

It's the same in a car as with a house.... do you want laminate floors, or real wood? Do you want plastic paneled walls, or high quality drywall and paint? Do you want aluminum single pane windows, or nice double-paned gas filled vinyl windows? A lot of it is tactile. A lot of it is visual, and you do see the interior of your car while driving. I can tell the difference between the leather steering wheel on my Kia vs. the one on my Audi with my eyes closed, guaranteed I'd have a 100% success rate blind-folded.

On the trip home, Tree Service and various Electric Power trucks from Alabama, Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee seemed to be the most commonplace.  At a Service Plaza just south of St. Augustine, the State Police were putting together a truck convoy going south on I-95 where there had to be several hundred trucks.

She'll, Costco and Mobil seem to be the only gas stations down here that have fuel.  Chevron, Texaco, Sunoco, etc., still have no fuel and the lineups at those stations is incredible.

They just recently opened Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale which will hopefully ease some of the gasoline shortages down here.  That's where 95% of fuels are offloaded from tankers for Southeast Florida.

Slowly but surely, power is being restored to neighborhoods.  My brother still has no electricity.

I have a cousin who lives just outside Atlanta, who has had no power for about a day.

Came back home this midnight. Took me about 14 hours from Atlanta, double the length. My navigation was taking me around the I-75 jams multiple times. It might be longer in distance, but you at least keep driving, which is much better than stop and go, where it doesn't take not much to hit somebody or get hit.

As I entered Florida, my navigation redirected me through several county roads all the way to US98 then SR44 and back to I-75, to avoid all that mess starting in I-10 interchange and ending near the Turnpike. The north part was totally dark, no lights. Then as I was coming closer to Tampa, more and more lights were on and the fuel situation was also better and better. As I came to Tampa Bay at midnight, all streets were lit, no obvious signs of damage, all gas stations open and having fuel. This is Brandon, I know people in Pinellas had a little more hardship, but even there things are coming back quickly, too.

One thing FEMA has to do better next time - if they anticipate massive evacuations, like this one, they need better fuel distribution along these routes before the storm, not just after. As I was passing by on Saturday-to-Sunday night, which turned out to be perfect timing (started at 3 am, which was still a few hours away from real rain or wind coming, but after the wave of evacuees passed already) there was no fuel along I-75 all the way to South Georgia. Poor people driving from Miami/Naples area were getting stranded near Ocala, Gainesville, Lake City, when their fuel ran out. The resting areas seem full of cars.

When I was driving to Atlanta, I also saw several small convoys of utility trucks coming toward the area, I'm sure they were going to staging areas, just before the storm hit. As I was saying, those guys are unsung heroes. They usually don't even get a thank you, unlike police or firefighters - it's more like what took you so long.

Same here - my friend, who let me stay, lost power 20 minutes into the official storm warning time. Not restored today. It's either all those guys are here in Florida, or GA Electric was caught with their pants down. The power outage was not extensive, just his neighborhood due to one fallen tree (or so it seems). He told me two days after no activity around the tree. So my place went through Cat 1/2 hurricane and it's all up and running, his house barely saw gale winds, his larger neighborhood might have seen a bit more and he will be one tossing food out of the fridge. Go figure.

Good citizen. Most people these days wouldn't get involved which is why that kind of stuff happens. You would think if your maneuvers caused one hit you wouldn't keep hitting the other car unless you thought you'd get away with it.

Brandon is half an hour from me! Electricity goes off at times, but, is mostly on our neighbors have said. Electricity goes off a lot at the best of times though. Seems like I am always resetting clocks.

The maintenance people were clearing away fallen branches and stuff today. What a big sigh of relief!

They should have a way to park the tanker truck in the rest areas and sell gas right off the truck. It would be even better if they could fuel you up on the fly...like planes do.
