Finally Apple replaced my iPhone 6 with a new one. It's just a pain in the neck to set up a new phone - hours it took me this afternoon. One of the best things about the new iPhone 6 is the larger screen. For me, it's a blessing. The speed with which it goes from one app to another and the speed it responds to input from me is super fast compared to the old 4S I had. I purchased one of those Apple Care+ agreements which gives me 2 years of service on the phone and direct Apple Care technicians whenever I have a problem.

I've tried the other phones out there, but it just seems that the Apple Phones are best suited for me, an old 70 year old who needs all the help he can get when it comes to computers and phones. I am barely competent, but definitely not a "geek"!

Speaking of barely competent computer people, what the heck happened to Richard (sterlingdog)? We haven't heard from him in over a month, maybe two. The last time he was posting was right after he bought the F150. I hope he is OK!

Richard, give us a sign if you can.

I follow this thread as well as CCBA, and I'm not sure which one had some posters who were following and checking out the 2015 Mustang but I believe it was here.

The salesman who sold me my 2011 GT, as well as my truck and my dad's truck, has recently moved to another Ford dealer across Dallas and has been texting (baiting) me pics of his stock of 2015 Mustangs as they arrive. He finally got a couple of GTs in so my wife and I took one out for a spin on Saturday night. It was a manual vs our automatic, so not an apples to apples comparison but here are my impressions:

    - Doesn't feel as fast as my 2011 but that may just be perception because of the different transmissions. Will have to drive an automatic to fully compare.
    - Engine is definitely a lot quieter than my 2011, even before I put the Borlas on. It's almost as if Ford was going out of its way to make it sound refined. Even my wife said if we got one we'd have to change out the mufflers first thing.
    - I love the looks overall, even if not crazy about the new back end, and the interior is a huge improvement. Surprisingly, while my wife liked the additional creature comforts she preferred her dash and gauges. She specifically did not like the toggle switches.
    - Car handled great and I thought the ride was a little smoother than mine.
    - The clutch on this car was a source of frustration, although I'm sure I'd get over it in time. Mind you, one of my cars is a standard so I'm no stranger to a manual transmission, but it was almost as if you had to let 90% of the clutch out before anything happened, and then bam! I'm sure anyone around me while I was driving it must have been thinking I never drove a manual before.

So the dealer is saying list price initially which didn't surprise me given the popularity and relatively low stock. The car I drove listed at $39,705 and was an optioned up Premium, but still missing another couple of grand of options that I would want. I got to playing around on USAAs website and their buying program last night. I typed in what I was interested in and it took me a few screens forward to what local dealers would sell one for. This time I was surprised, because while some were at dead list, others advertised discounts from $200 to $2,700. Of course, my phone and email lit up this morning with about 8 replies (annoying, but glad the dealers were paying attention unlike some of the stories I've read here recently). One of them was a different salesman from the dealer I visited, quoting on that exact car and reducing it almost $2,500. Not sure how legit it is, but I do have it in writing and I would expect in a few months when stock is greater the discounts will start and maybe we'll even see a rebate.

Anyway, I'm not sure I will take the plunge but I am interested. Will have to keep an eye on them as they start to fill the dealer lots and see where I end up.

GG, glad you're not a crispy critter and Lowes/Deere took care of you.

Sunoco in the NE generally offers four grades of gas, 87, 89, 91, 93. Most other stations skip the 91, which at Sunoco is usually ~.02/gallon less than 93. Costco by me only offers 87 and 93, so I 93 the Jag. But, it is still usually lowest price around. Got down to 3.20 for PUG, now at 3.24. Not to mention $1.50 for a 1lb. hot dog and unlimited soda! I am indeed a gourmand!

LD....thought of you over the weekend. I walked a 5K this Saturday for a local charity. One of the guys who happened to be walking in my group just bought an XF (I think that's what it was). After the walk he showed it to me. Impressive. Beautiful car. It was dark blue with tan and blue leather interior.

Didn't ask price. It looked looked and felt the part of a Jag, though. Quite rich looking/feeling.

Is there a sinkhole map or directory or whatever?

Just saw something in the news today about another property lost to a sinkhole there.

I like the idea of Florida in the winter. Years ago I remember getting off a plane at Daytona Beach airport where you walked across the apron to go into the terminal. Smelling the scent of the palm trees in the air when you had taken off in a cold climate was rejuvenating.

The smell of Palm Trees?  I live in an area where we have 3-4 varieties of Palm Trees (Royal Palms, Coconut Palms, Dwarf Palms, etc.) but I have never smelled a Palm Tree in my entire life.  Mango Trees, Orange and Grapefruit Trees and Lemon Trees are aromatic, but not Palm Trees.

Maybe you were smelling some fresh cut grass or newly pruned trees,

Well, it was a very distinct scent we don't get in the north. Not grass, I know that since I have plenty of it. Someone told us it was palm. Seemed tropical. What do I know? I'm from Canada, we don't have those here!

That same trip I ended up playing golf with a local. I lost track of my drive on one hole and asked him if he saw where it went. "No problem, it's in the fairway just left of that palmetto tree over there." I didn't have the fortitude to tell him I had no idea what one of those looked like.

Now that's funny!  I wouldn't know a Palmetto Tree from any other of the species of trees in this subtropical environment.  But a Coconut Palm has Coconuts - a dead giveaway.  A Royal Palm is straight and plush and stately and is usually planted in long rows like an entrance to an estate - that's why they call it "royal".  There are at least 50 different types of palms down here.

But in California, I don't believe there is a single Palm Tree that is indigenous to the west coast - all have been transplanted there.  There are some Date Palms in the Palm Springs area (95 miles east of LA) and there are many date groves in the eastern desert there in the Coachella Valley.  I don't think those are indigenous either.

But down here, we have many, many palms and the further south in the state you get, the more plentiful they become.

But I really never smelled a Palm tree, honest.

    sales story here!
Long time (years) lurker, always great stories. Here's mine, Not as good as an old Richard story, But...
Ok, I finally decided it was time for ME. I ordered a 2015 Porsche Cayman S. Spent months looking for a used 14(don't fit well in the 13 and earlier style)
wanted silver/ gray, everything (even other colors) I saw was loaded with way too many options for me, (5-6K stereo upgrade??) 52 way power seats(only kidding, they are ONLY 18 way....)

Porsche has mastered the art of: EVERYTHING is a $$$$ option and plan on waiting a LONG time if you want one without all boxes checked! Stuff my 2014 Mazda 6 (GREAT CAR!) have standard items that Porsche calls an option, BUT what a car to drive, handling is outstanding!

Well, I found it was less coin to buy what I want and order a 2015 , so I did, now, the 4 1/2 MONTH wait......

PS: read something somewhere about you will never see a hearse with a trailer hitch, so don't wait too long to get what you want!

I certainly know what it's like to order a car and wait for it to arrive from Germany.

I have heard great things about the Porsche Cayman S.  My brother had one.  Fast, that's for sure.  Let us know when you pick up that beauty.  What colors (outSide and inside) and which options did you order?

Hi, agate gray with agate and amber interior (too old to pull off the yellow red or bright blue, and way too many white and black pones out there) trans is a twin clutch automatic absolutely lightening shifts, 19 Boxter wheels, already had flats w/ 19" on Mazda, last thing I want is 20" w/ no rubber between me and the road!

Those are sharp! I might have to keep an eye out when people start unloading them for aftermarket replacements. Those would look good on a graphite colored car.

In contrast, here is mine, which, while not bad, I don't particularly care for. Again, there is nothing else on the car that same color, so they just don't work for my personal taste:

My ultimate goal is to have flat black Shelby stripes and blacked out wheels to match.

Those don't look bad. I saw similar as standard equipment on a couple of turbo 4 2015s. I bet the black ones on the yellow Stang were expensive options. For $37k they must have loaded it up good.

Not sure if it was Palms you were smelling......sometimes party going visitors light up something when they get off the plane and walk across the apron.

But, the foliage here is amazing. The leaves back home are nice right now, one of my favorite times of the year because of that, but soon everything will be gray and brown. Calgary had a high of 12F today. Toronto will be around freezing once the polar vortex arrives. Here it will be about 75F and sunny until it rains on the weekend.

There isn't much comparison, shovel snow or swim in the pool that is kept at 86F.

cu...good story. I don't think you will be sorry you got a 2015 car.....you have to wait but it will have all the latest improvements. If you do trade it in it will be a year newer and that is worth about 15% of the cars value. Besides, you get to order exactly what you want and the colors you really want.

I have had a few friends and acquaintances I know who have major health issues or have died. I totally agree, there comes a time when you have to buy or do what you want to do...and enjoy it.....guilt free.

Congratulations, that sounds like a great car....enjoy it to the limit.

Driver, if you press the NAV button under your NAV screen, it will pull up the GPS on your screen.  Toggle your controller/mouse to the top of that screen and select NAV.  Press the controler down and turn the knob until you get to settings or options.  Press that selection and select the option that keeps the arrow "up".  That should solve your problem.

I figured that out by playing with it.  You can also select gas stations, restaurants, etc., to show up on your GPS map.

There are a myriad of options and settings available.  Also, in order for your voice activation to work better, there is a program in the settings menu that you can use to "train" the voice control to your own voice.  There are two parts to that - one for numbers and letters, another for commands.

If you have problems with it, just make an appointment with your local Mercedes Dealer to take you throught the settings and training sessions.

Thanks Mike, that is very helpful. I will try playing with it in the morning. Training for the GPS lady would be good, she has a hard time understanding some towns...and I speak fairly clearly.

I have tried setting the Home Link garage door opener and that is getting frustrating too. I would like to do it using the remote that comes with the device. I am supposed to press the button on the morror until it goes yellow, but it doesn't turn yellow. I will try again later...just too tiring and frustrating....still tired after the big drive.

Driver, take the car into the Mercedes dealer and they will set it up for you.

When I was in the business, I set those up all the time.  Press and hold the two outer buttons under your mirror until the lights flicker quickly.  That clears the computer.  Next, press and hold the button you want to program into the car and simultaneously press and hold the button to your garage door opener remote.  Make sure the remote is placed directly under the mirror.  If it "takes" the code it will flicker quickly.  If it does not flicker within 30 seconds, alternately press and release the garage door remote twice each second until the code is picked up by the car - the light will flicker quickly under the mirror.

If that doesn't work, get thee to a Mercedes Dealer.

From my visits to Florida, the first smell off the plane is that of humid air mixed with jet fuel. When I get to the hotel, it's humid air mixed with the sulfur smell of the water,

At least it's not like Los Angeles where it seems I taste the air before really smelling it.

driver, I just set the Homelink in my car. If you have an older opener, the simple way works. But, if you have a newer "rolling code" unit, it is a 2 part process. Go through the normal training (point the remote at the button, and push/hold them simultaneously). That syncs the button to the remote. But, you have to then sync the opener itself to the car.

there is a learn button on the unit (usually under the cover where the wire antennae is). You push that, then have 30 seconds to push/hold the newly trained homelink button in the car.

the owners manual (if you got one!) or quick set-up/reference guide should have the instructions. the trick is knowing which steps you are required to do, and most likely it is the rolling code ones I just described. I think training the car button is universal.

I want to go south, but not that far. NC or Tennessee (even lower VA, maybe out near VA beach) is far enough for me.

Or head for SoCal or Arizona or parts of Texas. (Avoid NM - it's plenty crowded as it is with 2 million people. :p )

My late mother-in-law snowbirded to her typical Florida concrete block home in Lakeland for quite a few years, complete with grapefruit trees and a huge live oak in the back yard. Why she finally decided to stay in the UP when they got too old to make the trips down and back I'll never understand; her support system was well established down there too.

I remember when they traded their Bimmer for a Buick since there was no one around to work on it in the UP.

I am having trouble convincing my wife that moving that far away from upstate NY is OK to do, since we can still drive up from NC as needed (just takes a bit longer!).

going to the west coast is never happening.

Today seems like a good day to go Cadillac shopping.

A local dealer on the Automile near Boston is offering more than $10K off a 2014 CTS. The Veteran's Day sale is extended to November 30. Imagine buying a brand new CTS for $35K; no surprise here as I originally posited that Cadillac's prices are 20% too high in the first place. Oh, and that deal it comes with some strings attached ....this promotion cannot be mixed with other promotions and discounts.

These are probably empty words as the dealer has a bloated inventory of CTS/ATS on their lot. Yes, I know they are 2014s but taking that much off dilutes the brand and makes a sham of MRSP.

I'll try that for sure. Sounds doable.

Well, what's new? This is how it's been with Cadillac for years, with very short break - unrealistic prices, bloated inventory, huge discounts. Today the product is admittedly improved, but pricing power can't be restored overnight. It's not like you can just build a better product and then charge more automatically. I think pricing of new 2015 CTS is clearly too high, just unrealistic, for same volume of sales, so they'll have to either cut production, or prices. If they have problems with 2014, just imagine what it will be with 2015. If they planned production right, then it may be OK, but old habits die long. Detroit is notorious in lack of supply discipline, hence the discounts.

driver, I just set the Homelink in my car.

Thanks stick...........between you and Mike this sounds fairly foolproof, so to speak. I will give it my best shot later today. This is almost as hard as putting together IKEA furniture.

"Veterans Day Sale", just doesn't seem right - or is it just me.

I was thinking of Jmonroe the other day when I was looking at Hyundais. Dealer actually had a good deal on a CPO 2013 Genesis. Only 19.900, but looks like a base model, no roof. If that is your thing I guess it could work!

Thanks for the update. Some posters thought Richard got a few odd jobs he could do with his new F-150. Glad to hear he is being productive and he is enjoying his new truck.

Looks like a great car and a 2013 loaded up car for under 20G! As my friend who traded in his 2013 Genesis (only 6 months old) for the Audi R4 found out, his Genesis depreciated quickly because the newer 2015 models have so much more equipment included. The only way they can sell a used one is to deep discount them.

That's another reason I prefer to get the latest model. Some things come down in price...like GPS and media systems, rear cameras, blind spot warnings, so you actually get a lot more car for not much more money....at least for less than the cost would have been on the older car.

Also, it has been my experience they get better at combining option packages better. The cost of my 535 was less for the new model because the options I wanted were now included in one lower priced package.

This isn't always the case, but, with advancements happening so quickly it is worth considering these days.

bwia...you look around and there are a ton of deals going on....not only with Caddy, but Audi, Mercedes, BMW, etc.

I know there was a bunch of cash from GM on the CTS. But, the new Cadillac head (came from Audi, with a very brief Infiniti stopover) said they aren't going to do that any more. And, that they were going to take some short term hits in order to re-establish their pricing scheme in line with the competition.

I do think that there will always bee some who wonder why they should spend more for an E Class over a C Class. Or, those who would spend more for a 5 Series over a 3 Series. Just like there will be those who question spending more for a CTS over an ATS.

In a huge role reversal, I find the CTS to be the sportster of the bunch between the E Class and the 5 Series. Some like that. Some don't. I think driver kind of summed it up with his E Class. It's not as sporty as his 5 Series, but that's exactly what he's looking for right now.

At the risk of getting Edmunds reviewers riled up, I found this review to be just about spot on the way I view the car..........FWIW!

Good review and I think I can get enough out of the review to say I get what they are thinking....the Caddie is at least as good as the it's competitors and for them it is the best of the group.

I wish I had tried the CTS just for the fun of it. I am happy with the E, and I don't think any other car would suit me better at this stage and time in life, so no going back.

I do think there is a difference between going to the larger models, CTS instead of ATS, 5 Series instead of 3, A6 instead of A4. The smaller versions are more nimble and I think more fun to drive...but the larger versions are more comfortable and have more room (like in the trunk). Just depends on what suits you at any given moment in time.

Thanks Mike and Stick....I got the Homelink working, and it was from your instructions. The garage door company instructions and Mercedes instructions are hard to decipher. I think using the "learn button" made a difference too....can't be 100% sure, but somehow I think it made a difference, maybe for me anyway.

Mike, I got the GPS turned around and that is much better. Isn't it more natural to set it so it matches the direction you are driving? You have to do 2 or 3 more calculations in your head to convert the map if it shows directions as North and South.

I'll have to select some of those other options too. I wonder what 3-D is like?

Thanks for that review especially on the clutch. I had problems with it too, thought it was because all my experience is with truck-like long throw shifters. I definitely need to drive an auto before I would buy. Funny how all the units in stock at dealers seem to be manuals. Maybe that's the choice of the early buyers.

Sometimes they build all of one model first...for example, all the manual, all the AWDs etc., and then start making the others....so the manuals may have come off the line first.

Also when we were looking for our 2012 BMW 328 and 335 the clutch acted the same. My wife and I didn't like the way the clutch worked...the salesman said that was the way it was supposed to be. Then, when we tried the A4 the clutch worked as smooth as can be. Not sure if it is something new, or a fault.

I remember back in 1990 I test drove an Acura Integra almost as a formality because I had convinced myself I wanted to buy one thanks to the magazines raving about it. I was shocked to discover I hated driving it because of the clutch. It was the same as you describe, nothing until almost at the very top of its travel, then, BAM! I was coming out of a MR2 and never once had an issue with that clutch, it was beautiful and very linear. Anyway, that soured me on the Integra and I started shopping elsewhere. Went to VW and drove a GTI and that was the one. No problems using that clutch.

Another coincidence, I've become an elite, world class runner this year, too! I"ve run 4 charity 5ks myself, after a lifetime of hating (and not) running. Surprisingly, my time's aren't half bad for an old man, the first race I ran my goal was to simply finish (as well as donating to the charity, a children's hospital). On my own two feet. In less than 30 minutes. Mission more than accomplished (and this included a stretch of Boston's fabled "Heartbreak Hill!). I've improved each race, but think I'm done for this season.

I've always had a soft spot/desire for a Mercedes as my mother, the realtor, drove them in the '70s. But, in addition to its own fine qualities and characteristics that appeal to me, the (modern) "Jagness" of the XF just made it a standout amongst the sea of A, E and 5s. Jag's place in the automotive pantheon, the fact it has survived here in the US where other fabled British marques have not, just drew me to it.

My first choice was the blue/tan interior. But, as I waited until last call '13 to buy a '13, my choices were limited. No regrets, the Iridium Silver looks cleaner more often than the blue would have. And, when my car is not shiny clean, I am sad.

30 minutes for 5K is what I do, My son ran a 16:31 5K last Saturday in the Eastern Mass state meet taking 8th in his division. He races on Saturday in All States on a course he ran only once before with a 17:11 in October. Race time temp is expected to be in the low 30's. He says it won't affect anyone's race - it just makes warming up a miserable affair. His goal is 16:20 and top 15. Good luck kiddo. If I tried to keep his pace, I'd stop after a mile or so.....
