Stick, just something to think about, I'll throw it out there just for the fun of it.....
Buy 2 tires now...on the wheels that need the traction, probably the fronts.
This allows you to buy 2 now and 2 later....breaking up payments.
It also allows you to hedge your betting a bit, they may last, may not.
Gives you somewhat better traction than not getting new tires now.
If the car blows up you will have only lost the price of 2 tires....not 4.

Funny thing is that he is still growing.  He’ll hit 6’4” in a couple of months.  He just turned 17 a few weeks ago.

RDX has original sneakers. Now 5.5 years old (date on tires was just a few months before I bought the car) with about 62 months use. Michelin Primacy MX4s, with 42K miles now.

had them checked, and they are all even at 4/32 (checked inner and outer tread). Tire guy noted some minor cracking at the base of the tread (I guess that is dry rot). I looked, does not seem severe.

We don't normally get much snow, but if we do get stuck having to drive in it, this will be the car that gets to do it. Only wild card is our Xmas trip to the north country (upstate NY, near OldFarmer). So never know what you get up there. But most years, something. Outside of that trip, have no plans to do anything with the car other than local running around. If it snows here, normally just stay home.

So question is, at what point does everyone preemptively swap out tires that still have life? I normally would do by 3/32 (never let them hit the wear bars at 2), and if it was spring time would let them go, but debating if should just fork over the money and do them early before end of December.

If you're going to become a permanent upstater you should let them go bald and then go out to improve your winter skills. Otherwise if you value your life replace them just before your trip. Wouldn't worry about the dryrot. I bought a 5 year old car with OEM tires and 25k miles. Significant sidewall cracking. Wore them out completely with no problems.

Catching up on quite a bit while I was away on business to North Carolina and it wasn't pleasant business. I had the unfortunate task of delivering to my team the news they were being displaced and their positions relocated to Cleveland. They were expecting it based on the fact we didn't replace positions there when people left or posted to other internal jobs. We're now working to build out a team in the Cleveland area and instead of going to Denver the week before Thanksgiving I'll now be spending it in Ohio with one of my team managers interviewing candidates. Some of the displacees will probably be picked up by one of my area's sister departments but others I expect will take the severance package and go elsewhere. Not an easy conversation to hold to be sure.

On a personal level, and this had nothing to do with it the talent pool we need just isn't there, the majority of my traveling will no longer require an airplane save for a 5-6 trips/year. I will miss going to Raleigh in the winter though, 50-60 degrees was a nice break from the teens and twenties that plague Pittsburgh in January/February.

He was playing football on varsity last year, but dropped out to concentrate more on baseball and his studies.  He told me he has no time for steady girlfriends - he says it’s too much of a distraction at this point in his life.  What a guy!!!

I have learned that some cars can be in better condition at 200,000 miles than others with 80,000 miles.

I once had a ride in an Shuttle Express Lincoln town Car that was pushing 400,000 miles. It was as quiet as a church and the driver said that they had one that got wrecked at over 700,000 miles. He said that they maintained them well. The fact that they are in operation practically non stop 24 hours a day probably helps too!

For a lousy 1500.00, that could be a lot of car for the money!

Yes it does. The CL ad says 1 Owner but you have to wonder if the one owner was Hertz or a private party who crashed a lot. Doesn't look like it's optioned out or rental duty though.

Sounds great. Some things I wonder about in his ad...which could be good or bad, depends on interpretation. Some are funny!

It always gets me that when companies do this sort of thing they prepare months in advance, telling people it will make the remaining company stronger, you will all be OK etc. Then, when the ax falls and the cuts are made and the remaining workers feel depressed and lonely because their friends are gone....and the departed are really lost as their career and identity get lost. I had it happen to me 3 times in 4 years.....and it isn't nice.

I recently read 180000 was about the limit. Now, where did I read that? Oh yeh, right here. I think it is a good general rule too, but, there are exceptions. It is like a lot of gamblers though, they remember what they won, but not all the losses to get there. I wonder if that happens with a car that actually reaches 400000 miles?

If you are putting a car into livery service it might make sense to bear the expense of pushing a car to 300K or 400K, but for the average owner one has to wonder.

I drove taxis when I went to teachers college. That would be about 1970. Most of the taxis were worthless at about 120000 miles, but a few guys loved there cars and got 400000 miles out of them. But, to do that, those cars were really babied and they got the best of care. In those days the really cheap, but made a lot of money guys, used toilet paper rolls for oil filters.

Somehow, I knew you people would vote "spend money!" All the feedback makes sense. Tires are sneaky that you lose grip gradually as they age, so you don't really notice how bad they are getting. So if they are losing some of their wet grip, does not bode well for Snow. So of course, if I splurge, pretty much guarantees won't see a flake this year!

Driver, I would never put 2 on. Always do all 4 together. Especially on an AWD vehicle. Even more so when switching to an entirely different tire brand.

Did some more research, and think will be going with General Altimax RT43. Got really well rated on Tire rack, particularly with Snow. and overall good tires that have good tread life. Not too pricey either. Was down to them and the Coopers.

Most likely this will be the only set I put on, so if I stretch them to the end and do it next fall, I just defer the cost, don't avoid it. With the miles we put on annually now, should likely be selling the car well before they wear out.

Most likely will just do it in mid-December to get out of the way before the holidays. Hope the wife likes her new tires for Christmas!

Cleveland gets beat up, but it's been built up quite a bit.
Weather on the west side is better than the east side.

The company I worked for hired young people cheap and fired them when their salaries got too high or at age 39 so they couldn't claim age discrimination. This came after putting the employees at each other's throats to motivate them.

I have never been one to do a lot of long range planning when buying a new car. It just seems like one day I suddenly get the itch and before you know it, the deed is done. The thing is, this usually happens just after I have put a new set of tires on the old car. It seems that experience is something I always acquire right after I needed it.

well, one thing I know for sure is that the RDX is going nowhere any time soon. The wife likes it, and really likes that it is finally paid off. Plus, I think we need to go back to our former rule of no more than one payment at a time.

I beat up on Cleveland because my wife is from there. I actually like the town quite a bit, but the weather on the east side in winter is brutal.

@stickguy - I'm in the same boat with the Outback. TPMC light came on last Monday (first really cold day of the year), so I take it to Discount Tire for a check up.

In addition to being underinflated, I had them check the tread depth, as well.

All the OEM Bridgestones are at 4/32", as well. After 23,000 miles. So, same decisions to make -

what to get?

What size are the tires on the RDX? Why did you decide to go with the Generals? I'll have to see if Discount or the Subaru dealer carry them.

I worked as a store manager for a bookstore chain. They used you up and spit you out. When you are young thy would make promises, and you would work hard and you were motivated. Then when you got a little older they made your work impossible, you would either leave with a nervous breakdown or they would find a reason why you weren't needed any more. Their formula was to get rid of you because you reached the maximum pay they wanted to pay you and they sure didn't want to pay for your pension......plus, they could start somebody new at a much smaller salary.

I am glad I worked for myself the final 20 years!

Forgot you had AWD. When I used to keep cars longer I would usually replace the front tires...which wore out first, then a few months later replace the back ones. I just bought original equipment tires. That was back in the 70s and 80s when matching tires wasn't so critical.

I had a 67 Ford and not much money, I had 4 different tires on that sucker...I think they were all different sizes too. It is lucky I am still here to tell about it (some people may not think so).

I was just there in October when the weather is beautiful. Cleveland is a wonderful city. Yes, it snows, but not that much more than any other Midwest city. And someday, maybe, the Indians will win a Series. Hopefully in my lifetime.

I hear you. In my situation though I have been traveling down there every 4-6 weeks for the last 2.5 years because the manager on site was more interested in being a friend to her team versus managing them and it was having a domino effect on the rest of the team up here. Up until June it was very awkward because I was going down to basically do her job, even though we were peers. Once my boss retired and I was promoted I started drafting a work restructuring plan because I realized things weren't going to improve there. It wasn't easy because some of the individual contributors told me in so many words during a few of my visits their onsite manager hindered their growth.

I'm looking for financial crimes investigators and a manager, probably 5-6 people. We have operations buildings on both the east and west side so it will depend where I can secure enough space. The one in the east is right near Beachwood and as @28firefighter knows right near Corky and Lenny's which is always a plus. The ones on the west side are in Strongsville and on the west side of the city. Worst case scenario is having to use the regional building downtown.

I like Cleveland as well, it's relatively easy to navigate, it has one of my favorite breweries (Great Lakes), and in the summer when the kids are out of school it's much easier to bring the family along for the ride since we have friends up there and plenty to do with the RR Hall of Fame, science center, etc.

23K miles would really steam my clams. But I have never been impressed by life on bridgestones, and have heard horror stories about OEM Sube tires. My son had the same ones on his Jetta, and they were lousy in the snow, and he did not have a lot of miles at lease end (thankfully they had enough tread to turn in!)

RDX runs 235/60-18 102V. More popular size at least now vs. when I bought it.

I got interested on the Generals from reading Tirerack reviews, and their test of them. And of course, the price from Mavis! liked that they were well regarded for light snow, and really good in the wet. Long wear too is a plus.

Discount Tire (my preferred retailer) does not carry them. But, they don't carry the Coopers, either. So, I may decide to use the dealer or check a couple of other tire stores to see if they carry them.

The Ouback runs 225/60-18, IIRC. Pretty close.

And, the OEM tires on my Jetta are Bridgestones. Fortunately, after 12 months they still have 10/32" tread on them, so not too worried I'll have to replace them before lease end.

the Hankooks on the Sonata at 20,800 still looked like new tread wise They would have lasted a long time. I am sure that is getting a quick detail and going right out as a front line CPO, with those tires still on it. Not actually bad tires overall, but they never touched any sort of snow or slush. Don't think they were all that great in snow. Though better than the ones on the Elantra! Hankook Ventus Nobles. Great handling tire. Dismal in snow. If I finally move up north to snow country, definitely would have to get a set of dedicated snows. Or a truck for winter beating!

@stickguy - you NEED to replace the tires on your wife's RDX (you knew that even before you asked "the group"). Even though the RDX doesn't get much snow use, it DOES get driven in the rain. 4/32nds and 5 plus years is a good run. Even Cal Ripken sat out a game. Time to "hang em up" and get the RDX some new shoes.

Interesting about the Hankook. My Infiniti has them. I think the dealer I bought from replaces all tires on their CPO G37X/Q40 AWD sedans with these Ventus Nobles. I've never seen them on another Infiniti. They sell them very cheap too (too cheap). Glad I kept my Nokian snow shoes from the Legacy. I'm over the 18K mile mark on the Infiniti (11,000 miles for me). It is an excellent daily driver.

Speaking of miles, the countdown to 100K begins. I hit 99,500 miles on my way to one of my son's hockey games tonight.

@abacomike - I'm sure you are insanely proud of your grandson. I love watching my sons play hockey.

Funny you mention that. I bought the Mustang right after putting new (and better) tires on the Eclipse.

As to buying I'm the opposite. I fantasize, research, agonize and give up in frustration until suddenly everything comes together and I buy. The anticipation is half the fun.

Half the fun of driving my 69 Plymouth was not knowing if you would make it home or find your self spun out in a snowy ditch ( which almost happened on multiple occasions).

I just caught a few seconds of a show called 'Street Outlaws' and I saw them doing a race between a Porsche and a pick up truck towing a boat. The pick up won.



They also have a cute girl who likes to race. Maybe I'll start watching.

I will never speak negatively about nanny technology on today’s vehicles ever again!

This morning, I was exiting the Turnpike here in Boca Raton when my car abruptly came to a screeching halt with beeps sounding inside the cabin and red flashing lights started in my info screen and in my driver’s dash screen.  A truck abruptly cut me off and stopped quickly in front of me and had no tail or brake lights working.  We were traveling at about 55 mph.  Without the accident avoidance system functioning perfectly, I would have slammed right into the truck.  This all happened in a second or two.

even the car behind me screeched to a halt without hitting me - but it was a close call both front and back.

This was an example of technology avoiding a certain crash!

All those lights flashing and beeps and buzzes may have left you with a headache though.

It sounds good though.....I want it for my next car, anything that helps is good.

I wonder how hard it would be to prove the trucks brake lights weren't working. If you can't prove it they would probably say you were responsible. The stop feature saved you a lot of legal haggling and possible serious injuries....or worse!

That sounds like one of those insurance scams that target high end vehicles under the assumption of deep pockets. Did you get any info on the truck that you could pass on to the police. I hear they even have the rear lights on a switch... Turn them off to cause a crash then turn them on when the cops arrive. Make you look like a nut or negligent driver.
