I thought most of you could relate:
A wife was curious when she found an old negative in a drawer, and had it made into a print.
She was pleasantly surprised to see that it was of her at a much younger, slimmer time.
It was taken many years ago on one of her first dates with her husband.
When she showed him the photo, his face lit up.
"Wow, look at that!", he said with appreciation,
"THAT’S MY OLD 1949 FORD 4 DOOR
and Ed’s 38 Plymouth, behind it !”
If she had been with him that long she would be use to that.
If I need to know what year something happened in....first I try to remember what car I was driving at the time!
That makes a lot of sense! I have another way - what girl was I dating?
Any chance you have a list of the models that have highest residual values? I did a quick search but not having much luck.
Just google "cars with the highest residual rates"
The short quick answer is: 6 vehicles with high resale value. ... 2017 Honda Fit (subcompact) ... 2017 Subaru Legacy (midsize car) ... 2017 Jeep Wrangler (compact SUV/crossover) ... 2017 Toyota Sienna (minivan) ... 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD (full-size pickup) ... 2017 Lexus RC (entry-level luxury car)
But, do you really want to choose a car, SUV or truck just based on that? I think unless one of these cars is a close fit, you will get tired of it quickly and trading early may cost more in the long run.
Disclaimer: NOT a leasing expert... doesn't the residual value also change from year to year? Remember that the residual value is different each year. It might be 70 percent after one year, 60 percent after two, 50 percent after three, and so on. At least that's what the Edmunds article told me:
For anyone who thinks electric cars are a new idea; 1905!
I would give anything to have that charging unit in my living room!
You mean that electrical gadget or the young lady?
Full early 1900s battle dress! Driving an open car in those days was a challenge
No windscreens I guess, and no heaters. I think you are right Mr S, that electronic gizmo would make for an interesting conversation piece for the party room. Her garb comes complete with a crash helmet;

Resale value is very low on my checklist. It could be a tiebreaker, if I consider some vehicles equal otherwise, but I don't buy a car for the next guy, I buy one for myself. However, it's a perfect differentiator for people who don't care about cars and see them as "A to B" appliances, as they are very good indicators for the lowest cost of operation. Depending on the vehicle class, depreciation can be the highest cost, higher than gas, insurance, taxes, interest, or maintenance/repairs. It's often invisible to people as it's included in their monthly payment and already accounted for in the budget, as opposed to an unexpected tire replacement, or AC repair out of warranty, which are not.

Gee...that charger and plug wouldn't be an electrical and/or fire hazard, would it?
Just came back from the Credit Union which had offered me a lower rate on my car loan. The monthly figures the hey quoted indicated a savings of about $12 a month. I was half way through signing the papers when I noticed the term was for 36 months not the 33 months I had left on the old loan. When i had her recalculate the figures it turned out they were saving me 64 cents a month. She had almost pulled the old F & I trick of lowering the monthly by extending the term.

Took the C250 in for the yearly oil change. We got it with 12500 miles on it....now has 18000, about 1100 a month when we are here for 5 months.
We sat in a newer C300 with the redesign, just to plan for the future. My wife didn't like the new one, seat won't go high enough, dash is higher, hood is raised up more, windows are narrower all around - and she doesn't like the GPS/media thing sticking up.
Salesman couldn't answer any questions, he was new and said he didn't know much about MBs. They must be desparate down here for salesman, because this guy isn't going to make it, guaranteed.
After an hour the service rep came in and said I needed $500 worth of tires - 2 backs had 2/32nds tread, wiper blades - $60, the motor mounts had hardened $1400....a total of $2600! I almost had a heart attack. Then he said well it does have 59000 miles on it. I said last I checked it had 18000 miles on it. He said oh, I guess you're not Lisa? I said no, so he said sorry, I got the wrong bill. He got the right one....$160 for the oil change and everything checked out perfectly.
I told him he does that so I will be happy when I get the lower bill.....but, I feel very sorry for Lisa.

If Lisa got it as a used car (likely story), it only reinforces the case you need to be able to pay for 150% of the used car, when you get it - especially a premium brand.

36 months is a standard term for loans. Unless you specifically asked for 33 months, she said yes than sent you papers for 36 month loan, I cannot see a malintent here, more like honest lack of communication.
You should have known better to look at total figures and make sure you both spoke same "languague" - how many payments, what is the aggregate amount of interest. In Florida there is also stamps fee - not very high, but it can kill the refinancing deal, if your rate is already low and your savings marginal. If you say your CU offered "lower rate", what did it mean? 64 cents per month "equivalent" sounds like the same "rate" to me, in terms of interest rate (within 0.1%), or fees/stamps "ate" the difference, if it was bigger.
I never look at payments - they are what they are, whatever the assumptions are plugged. Payment can be anything (i.e. you can make it anything you want, just change the length of the loan). What counts is rate, fees and totals. If any salesman, F&I starts talking to me in terms "per month", I shut it down right away. If they avoid speaking about actual terms in a plain languague, I'm no longer interested in doing business with them.
I don't think she'd lie about your score. You get it on paper with your loan docs. Congrats, anyway. BTW, you are sure it's 850/850, not 850/900? Just saying that cause many car loans today are based on 900 scale, not 850 (there are gazillion different scoring formulas, 900 scale became popular in that particular area). Don't know why. Anyway, even if it's 850/900, it's still top 99% percentile, or so.

farmer, must be 900 scale, because I think the finance guy said mine was 878. Probably the highest they had at that dealer (philly place, I think they do more marginal credit deals than tier 1s!) in a while.
Hardened motor mounts sounds a lot like noisy Johnson rods, otherwise known as bend over, we're going to drive you home.
Well "hardened" motor mounts can cause a pretty good vibration at idle and you know how Mercedes Dealers are, they think every one on the road should match factory standards. Hence the Treasure Hunts that take place when cars are in for an oil change. They aren't the only stores that do this either!
speaking of loans, my daughter (college senior) texted today asking what her student loan payments were going to be (I sign the financial aide stuff for her). Some friend of hers said he was on the hook for $850/mo for 15 years. If she typed the numbers right, that is a big ouch. Pretty much a mortgage in many areas.
Thankfully was able to tell her it would be way less than that. She was in a panic. She's even cheaper than I am, when it comes to her money! Though she did loosen up this year spending on her world travels while she has the chance.

It's also helpful to change one's own oil and avoid the turmoil.

How do motor mounts "harden" after only 59k miles. You would think MB would engineer them for the life of the car. If I were Lisa the next time i had my car serviced i would use the name Bluto.

Would you take a Mercedes to a Quickie Lube for an oil change?
Remember, this is the only work done on the car for one year. The warranty runs for another 4 or 5 months....I don't want to mess up my warranty by getting a cheapie oil change.....because if anything could go wrong, it will, and they will void the warranty.....though they said I could take it anywhere for an oil change....licensed I assume.
Would you take a Mercedes to a Quickie Lube for an oil change?
He shouldn't, if he wanted to, unless they provide a specific oil from the manufacturer's approved list. German cars generally require a specific spec oil to be put in. They test their vehicles with those specific oil brands and models. So you can use off-dealer place, but you'd lose warranty coverage, if they used an oil that's not on the list. If you did that, you'd quickly find out that even Quicky Lube change may cost you 50-80 bucks. 160 bucks covers the loaner, the "free" cappuccino machine and chef pastries in the customer lounge. And the "service adviser" commission. And profits for the owner.

When he thought I was the one with the hardened motor mounts he said the car would vibrate as you are taking off from start. I might not notice because I have been driving it that way for some time. He said once they replace them people notice the car idles and starts off much better.
I love our Mercedes's, but, I sleep better knowing they are under warranty.

If there as any miscommunication it was on her part. During our initial phone conversation she quoted the lower rate based on 36 months. I sai I only had 33 months left and wouldn't want to extend the term. She said no problems, same rate. The monthly was quoed on that basis. I was only after i started reading he documents on her computer screen that I noticed it was for 36. I'mglad that I always read before I sign.
I asked about the score and she said it was base on an 850 scale.
Pretty good for a poor dirt farmer.

I think time is a factor too!
Lisa's bill would be $2600, but with 59000 miles her car is probably 5, 6, 7 years old. If that is the only work done could average $400, $500 a year.
I changed my own oil for years. One day I decided I was tired of getting out the ramps lying on my back and having oil drip down my wrists. Then the hassle of disposing of the old oil? I use the dealer or a trusted independent now!

I have wonder if you had told him " Go ahead and do the work" if you would have ended up with new tires and motor mounts?
It was on Lisa's work order, so I think I would be giving the go ahead for Lisa.
He said when he was explaining, I can do the work when I want to....there was no pressure. If it had been my car, I would have said I'll look at my schedule, then I would order blades online, get tires on sale somewhere, and then ask a good indie mechanic that works on furrin cars....what he thought about the motor mounts.
I have wonder if you had told him " Go ahead and do the work" if you would have ended up with new tires and motor mounts?
Frankly, with the image folks want to portray about MB's being special, that kind of error of talking to the wrong customer should never have happened.
I would suggest that the fresh oil change should be done on the 250 before leaving it sitting for the summer. That was it's sitting with almost new oil on the walls and bearing and in the sump. Most small motor guides suggest changing the oil before putting lawn equipment away for the winter instead of leaving the contaminated oil in them.
I don't know if you are technically right imid, what I do know is we bought the car in November 2016 so 1 year is up. It is one year or 10k miles. We put about 6k miles on it so the oil is pretty fresh.
On everything I have read it doesn't talk about changing the oil before storing. Add Stabil to the gas, put a trickle charger on it, fill the tires to proper pressure or a bit more....some people put steel wool in the exhaust...so mice don't crawl in - I don't do that.
I think it is a nice extra to do the oil change just before storing, but, not a necessity. Just IMO.
Once a year........synthetic. And a full inspection, everything checked out 100%.
On the inspection, did you get the worksheet with red / yellow / green columns? If you did, how 1990's. For $160 I'd expect more.
I got a video of the tech performing the inspection on my Jetta when I took it to the dealer. Was texted right to my phone. Oil change and tire rotation, in addition to the inspection, for under $100. I put about 5-6K on the Jetta the first year. Still under 7000 as of today.
Looking at my last post you would think I had a stroke. The letters i type take up to ten seconds to appear, so long that the spell checker creates amalgams of words which are meaningless. I typed "dirt" and it came out Irytsh.
I changed my own oil for years. One day I decided I was tired of getting out the ramps lying on my back and having oil drip down my wrists. Then the hassle of disposing of the old oil? I use the dealer or a trusted independent now!
I reached the same conclusion when I saw the Mustang had a splash guard over the oil filter and I'd have to undo a bunch of screws before I could even start. Full Mobil 1 at the indie garage for under $70 cinched the deal.

Thankfully was able to tell her it would be way less than that. She was in a panic. She's even cheaper than I am, when it comes to her money! Though she did loosen up this year spending on her world travels while she has the chance.

It's also helpful to change one's own oil and avoid the turmoil.

He said when he was explaining, I can do the work when I want to....there was no pressure. If it had been my car, I would have said I'll look at my schedule, then I would order blades online, get tires on sale somewhere, and then ask a good indie mechanic that works on furrin cars....what he thought about the motor mounts.

Is that the correct logic here?

On everything I have read it doesn't talk about changing the oil before storing. Add Stabil to the gas, put a trickle charger on it, fill the tires to proper pressure or a bit more....some people put steel wool in the exhaust...so mice don't crawl in - I don't do that.
I think it is a nice extra to do the oil change just before storing, but, not a necessity. Just IMO.

I got a video of the tech performing the inspection on my Jetta when I took it to the dealer. Was texted right to my phone. Oil change and tire rotation, in addition to the inspection, for under $100. I put about 5-6K on the Jetta the first year. Still under 7000 as of today.

I wonder what's going on? I reached the same conclusion when I saw the Mustang had a splash guard over the oil filter and I'd have to undo a bunch of screws before I could even start. Full Mobil 1 at the indie garage for under $70 cinched the deal.
