I check my credit score through Chase, like some others.
My score dropped 13 points from one month to another and the only thing I did was pay off my auto loan.
It was a 72 month loan that I paid off in 22 months.

Between distracted driving and dim bulb moves it amazes me there are not more wrecks than there are, and it is already too many!

In a way, I'm surprised a BMW Genius couldn't get through to her but even a Genius can't fix real stupid.

I think I have mentioned before that my wife insists that we only pay cash when we buy a car. A few years ago as we were closing a transaction, the salesman said we could get 36 months financing at 0% interest. I said great, I can make a little interest for 3 years. Wife says nope, I don't want any payments and I don't want a lien on the car. We'll pay cash. I put my foot down and countered with, "Yes dear".

So how do you bring the money, in a shopping bag or a suitcase. I only pay cash under $5,000

I get quite a laugh out of my credit score as the only reason it seems so high is that I (well, my wife) pays our bills on time. It sure can't be based on my income. When I pull my annual credit report they have my employer still listed as the company I haven't worked for in almost 30 years so maybe they think I'm the president now.

The income is not reported to credit agencies, so it can’t be part of the score.

If a wheelbarrow is handy, we use that. If not, we just write a check.

One of the biggest thing that can move the score month to month is credit card balance. Even if you pay it off every month, the amount on the bill is reported as your balance at the moment, so if you travel for instance and make large charges one month, then expense and pay them off next one, and not go again that month, this may fluctuate it, especially, if you get close to limits. The way to mitigate it is to increase your limits and open more accounts, just so more credit is shown as available. This will temporarily lower the score (new accounts), but after a few months it will climb back and then low utilization will have a stabilizing effect.

Right, but I would bet there is a correlation. That said, I don't at all agree with the credit monitoring agencies business model, but I guess their extremely broad brush beats nothing.

Really? How do they figure out if you are in over your head or not? I thought part of the score was how much open credit you have vs income.

When I was buying the ATS I jokingly suggested bringing my down payment in via a paper sack of cash. The finance guy said that I would need to sign an affidavit stating it was not from the proceeds of crime.

Some things are no fun any more.

I do like to exercise my credit cars, but I'm never close to any limit.
More than willing to pay 1% or 2% up front to borrow money for a year.

A while later, they come to get me from the waiting area. A problem - the wheels will not clear the upper part of the spindle where the strut mounts to it. Driver's side totally fouls, passenger side barely clears. A call back to the GM dealer. They are baffled because they ordered based on my VIN. After about 30 minutes they call back, apologize, say there was a mistake in the catalog they used which did not take into account the FE3 suspension my car has. The only OEM wheel that will fit are 18" ATS wheels at about $80 more apiece. Ugh. They immediately credited my card and took the wheels back, so that was good at least. The tire shop contacted their wheel supplier and ordered a set of 17s they swear will fit. I find out next Wednesday when I go back. What an afternoon.

Wow. Nightmare is right. Nothing went right.
Hopefully it will all get sorted out next week.

They only assess how well you are currently manage your credit and what’s the credit quality. That’s credit risk. The actual capacity is assessed separately by the bank after you tell them your income. That’s why the bank may ask for the income proof for big loans. If you have solid history and asking for less, like a car loan, they will simply believe your word, but reserve the right to call your employer, or ask for W-2 or pay stab before actually underwritting the loan. Doesn’t happen for those of us with a good record, cause why bother if everything else checks out.


The banks will report the loan history, your public records (court) are also monitored, but there is no mechanism to report the income to these agencies. It is between you, your employer (if you have one) and the IRS. This is one of the biggest misconception that the credit agencies know your income.

BTW, lack of income verification was part of the housing bubble crisis. It started with people having good credit asking for too much money by lying about their income and not verified by the underwriters. These were good people who had bought their house, paid their mortgage on time for number of years and learned they sat on huge equity because of rapid price appreciation. They thought they could tap into the equity to improve their lifestyle, but had no income to pay it back. Banks gave them the loan, believing they’d simply foreclose if things go wrong. It spilled further and further into people with worse and worse credit, but that’s where it started. The score was there, but capacity was not.

It may be enough to temporarily swing the score for a few points temporarily. How do you get 1-2 percent fees? My cards offer only mostly 4-5, 3 percent at best, which kills it for me. BTW, 30 percent capacity is already significantly impactful on the score. Even 10-30 percent is minor, but could cost you a few points. But again, nobody should care if it’s 830 or 840, or even 800. There is no difference on credit decisions.

@isellhondas explained the problem with the Chevy's motor mounts, and the GM V8's in general, but a picture is worth a thousand words (I posted this pic awhile back when we were on this subject).



FWIW, I had this engine mount fix on a '67 Impala with a 283 V8 that I got used around 1974. It never gave me any problems.

Until we bought Mrs. j's 2012 Subie I don't think we had a car payment until back in the early '80's. So she became quite spoiled about not having car payments until the Subie purchase. The only reason we financed was because Subaru was offering 1.9% back then (November 2011). But she put her foot down and insisted that we only finance for 3 years since we never financed for longer than that. "OK dear you win".

Fast forward to June of 2015 when I bought the Genny. Hyundai was offering 0.9% so I TOLD her we were not going to pay cash because of the low interest rate. I won that part of the deal. Then she said, "OK but only for 3 years". I tried to explain to her it was free money so why not go for the 60 months that Hyundai was offering? Her response was, "because we never financed for more than 3 years". No amount of explaining got through to her until we were in the F&I office with Son #1 who told her, "just go with the 60 months Mom. You can pay it off early at any time it's almost free money". She relented and we took the 60 month deal. I sorta won that too but I have to give our son partial credit for that.

When I asked her why she believed our son and not me she said, "his undergraduate degree is in Accounting and he has 2 masters on top of that. You only have one measly degree and it isn't in Accounting".

I think I told this story before:

To avoid real problems, when I bought the '09 Genny, Hyundai was not offering low finance rates and since Mrs. j pays all the bills and did not want me to buy that car either, I paid cash. There was no way I was going to give her monthly reminders that I got a car she didn't think I should get.

36 months is a standard term for loans. Unless you specifically asked for 33 months, she said yes than sent you papers for 36 month loan, I cannot see a malintent here, more like honest lack of communication.

You should have known better to look at total figures and make sure you both spoke same "languague" - how many payments, what is the aggregate amount of interest. In Florida there is also stamps fee - not very high, but it can kill the refinancing deal, if your rate is already low and your savings marginal. If you say your CU offered "lower rate", what did it mean? 64 cents per month "equivalent" sounds like the same "rate" to me, in terms of interest rate (within 0.1%), or fees/stamps "ate" the difference, if it was bigger.

I never look at payments - they are what they are, whatever the assumptions are plugged. Payment can be anything (i.e. you can make it anything you want, just change the length of the loan). What counts is rate, fees and totals. If any salesman, F&I starts talking to me in terms "per month", I shut it down right away. If they avoid speaking about actual terms in a plain languague, I'm no longer interested in doing business with them.

I don't think she'd lie about your score. You get it on paper with your loan docs. Congrats, anyway. BTW, you are sure it's 850/850, not 850/900? Just saying that cause many car loans today are based on 900 scale, not 850 (there are gazillion different scoring formulas, 900 scale became popular in that particular area). Don't know why. Anyway, even if it's 850/900, it's still top 99% percentile, or so.

If there as any miscommunication it was on her part. During our initial phone conversation she quoted the lower rate based on 36 months. I sai I only had 33 months left and wouldn't want to extend the term. She said no problems, same rate. The monthly was quoed on that basis. I was only after i started reading he documents on her computer screen that I noticed it was for 36. I'mglad that I always read before I sign.

I asked about the score and she said it was base on an 850 scale.

Pretty good for a poor dirt farmer.

Our score bounces between 825 and 835, so looks like you set the curve for everyone. If a bunch of us ever do get together at a meet, we will probably work you over for making it tough on the rest of us.

I think those credit scores are sometimes just for bragging rights. My wife hasn't worked outside the home since 1981, none of the cars or bills are in her name and by herself she'd be eligible for welfare but according to her Discover Card her score is the same as mine.

I agree about the bragging rights thing. When we bought the '15 Genny Mrs. j had a score of 887 (IIRC) and when I asked the salesman about mine he said mine was about 7 or 8 points lower (I have a Home Depot card that is only in my name but there has never been a balance on it. Maybe that's why). He was going to give me a copy of my score but with all that was going on we both forgot about it. It would not have made any difference because Mrs. j knew hers was higher than mine and has reminded me about that several times since the Genny purchase.

I just checked mine with BA and it is 838, was 835 a few months ago. Mrs. j wanted to know what hers was. I told her I only have mine because when I set it up, with the help of @dino001 a while back when we were on this subject, I only input my info. She now wants me to get hers in there for bragging rights I'm sure. I told her it's not worth the work to get her info in there too, to which she said, "mine is higher than yours anyway and that's the way it's always going to be. I'll just add a few points onto your score to get mine".

Yep, bragging rights and the mind of an elephant. That's what I live with every day. :@

That so funny, when my wife got her 850 score for doing nothing she never let me forget that my 816 was lower. The first thing I did when I got my new score was stick my tongue out at her.

Now that's what I call a real man. If I did something like that my tongue would never work again.

was chatting with the wife earlier about options for paying off stuff now that we are just about done with college (1 more payment!). and got one of the cars paid off. Might sell some stocks that have run up (never know!). But however it works, 1st goal is to pay off the new car ASAP. Will worry about the HELOC after that (since interest rate is lower still I think, plus for now get to deduct the interest). Real goal is to finally downsize the house (and payment) in 2018, so that goes away anyway when we sell.

Told the wife that the real plan is to get debt free (outside of maybe one lease, or a short car loan) within 10 years max. once we got there, could decide to retire if desired. At least something to shoot for.

Update on my potential new job:
The appointment process is a complete and total fiasco. I won't go into the gory details but it's quickly becoming more trouble than it is worth. I do have an interview in the Governor's office, but it's only been set up to placate the Administration's main contact person in my county(who is backing me). The interview will be a charade- they already have another candidate selected. I'm going to the interview but I'm not enthusiastic about it at all; Mrs. RB is afraid I'll go in and blow it, but there's absolutely nothing at stake; I'm just going to be totally relaxed because I know that it will have zero bearing on who gets the nod. Were it not for my bride I probably would jerk everyone in the interview process around just for giggles-

Interviewer: What qualifies you to serve as Commonwealth Attorney?

Me: Over the past month I've binge-watched every season of LA Law, Suits, and Night Court."

It would be a hoot!

I was in a similar situation maybe 20 years ago. A job posting appeared for a position that everyone knew was designed for a friend of the administration. I applied anyway. Apparently nobody else did and the Deputy Minister, who had a fearsome reputation, had to interview me. Having nothing at stake, I went in and free wheeled. What was supposed to be a 30 minute session took 2 hours and we both enjoyed it. Eventually I got the Dear John letter but it also had a handwritten note from him in it thanking me for such a good discussion.

I remember being impressed as a kid when my aunt purchased her brand new Ford Falcon in the early 60s for about $2500 and brought a bag of cash into the signing. Thought she was rich but she turned out to just be odd.

I like your wife's method. Companies that offer 0% interest know that 90% of the people won't pay on time and they can charge them all the interest anyway. Your wife is a keeper houdini.

I think I have mentioned before that my wife insists that we only pay cash when we buy a car. A few years ago as we were closing a transaction, the salesman said we could get 36 months financing at 0% interest. I said great, I can make a little interest for 3 years. Wife says nope, I don't want any payments and I don't want a lien on the car. We'll pay cash. I put my foot down and countered with, "Yes dear".

So how do you bring the money, in a shopping bag or a suitcase. I only pay cash under $5,000

That reminds me, the guy I bought the Mustang Cobra from wanted cash....not a cashier’s check....CASH. I told him to meet me at my bank, but for some reason, he said he couldn’t. So, here I go with a stack of Benjamins, tucked in a brown paper bag, from my bank to his house. Weird carrying that amount of money on me. I kept thinking...”what happens if I have an accident and have to go to the hospital and have my car towed? Will I remember having that money?”

How about “someone saw me come out of the bank with a brown paper bag and assume I have cash it in and they try to Rob me?”.

Strange thoughts.

For the TLX, I took the check I got from Cadillac on the buy back, and signed it over to the dealership. They gave me another check back for the rest of the refunded amount.

I have a similar story. When we moved into our house a couple years ago, my stepson and his friend did a lot of the renovations before we moved in. We paid them in cash - I, too, felt exactly like you did walking out of the bank with that much cash on me. I couldn't give it to them fast enough.

This one has 5-liter naturally aspirated ("old school") 420 hp V8 and AWD. What do you think is gas mileage of a similar power, engine type and vehicle size vehicles? Audi A8L with 450 hp 4.0 l turbo (I think) V8, also AWD is 16/26. Benz has S560 4-matic, 4.0 l turbo V8 with more hp , gets 17/27. Both are better, but not earthshattering. I think the difference sits in naturally aspirated vs. turbo. The closest would be Inifiniti Q70L with 5.6L V8 AWD, 413 hp, getting 16/23 and Lexus LS 460L, 4.6l V8, "only" 386 hp, gets 16/23 mpg. It's all the same in my book.

Man, those Michelin X-Ice ie3 snow tires are awesome. Yesterday, we took off from the rental house in Manson in about 3" of wet, slushy snow that formerly I would've have to have at least been aware of. Not so much now. With there Michelin snows you can just go about your business at regular speed and you'll just mow your way through everything! I came up to a stop sign down at the bottom of the hill near the Red Apple Grocery store to test it's stopping ability and bop! Came to a complete stop like it was dry pavement. It's nice when the reviews you read are 100% accurate. This one X-Ice buyer said she goes skiing a lot in the Rockies and with these tires they're as good as gold scooting her along. So, gentlemen, and I know some of you have tried them and at least one of you have them now, feel safe spending the $500 on these. My bill came to $508 at the Wenatchee Discount Tire, but especially after the trouble I had on Manson backroads Sunday November 4th, I was all right with parting with that money for these tires! I highly recommend them.

Wonder if fitment would work on a Toyota Yaris iA that runs 185/60R-16 Toyo Proxes A27 tires straight from the factory. At least while Scion sold the small sedans that was the brand and size they used. My all-seasons for the Soul are Goodyear Cooper Starfire 195/65 R 15's. That wheel size is just 1" difference. Which tire company lets you try out different wheels - Tire Rack? Wonder if you can swap out sizes and find out if a different sized tire fits on the vehicle you're interested in. Because if they fit on the iA, I'd hang on to them and use them in the winter. Or the Toyota Corolla iM, or the Subaru Impreza 2.0i, or the VW Jetta, on and on.

With this great tire fix, I am going to just try and settle down and run our 2011 Kia Soul along. It's got just north of 92,000 miles, doesn't need oil or squirter fluid, a tune-up at 100,000 miles would be in order, changing out not only the standard oil filter but also the air filter, too. The cabin filter was recently changed. The car is such a trooper and now I feel that it's competent for any weather Washington tosses me.

The latest valuation is $2,795 - $3,500 for the car, and I owe about $7,100. Even the most gratuitous Toyota, Subaru or VW dealer isn't going to blush over that and not add at least $3,500 to my purchase order. Which does favor the Toyota Yaris iA, which is being sold in manual tranny form for only $15,975 now. Toyota actually dropped the little gaper down a $1,000 when it took the reigns of selling Scion automobiles as Toyota's.

Anyone wanna guess what they'd tell me if traded in the Soul - keeping in my mind that I owe just a titch north of $7,000 on the car. $2,950? $3,000? $3,500? My guess is they'd credit me $3,500 and tack $3,500 on to my new car purchase order.

These are my brands. No need to post a pic of my favorite sugar - but, I know you're all curious. So, it's bought at Wal*Mart, it's in a paper tube colored light blue and white. Love my morning coffee, dudes. Time for cup number 2!

I drink an 8-cup (6 oz cups) pot of coffee black every day. This is down from the 12-cup pot and a half I used to drink back in grad school.

iluv, Glad you are enjoying your new tires. I go along with Explorer, keep this car, try to pay that $7000 off, that should be your goal...a new car when that gets paid out. You are young and starting out, try to accumulate as little debt as possible...be like these guys wives. Take on minimal debt.

I am older so I have a different philosophy I just reached. I buy whatever I want when I want, and I tell my wife I might as well get it because I'm not paying for it. It is being paid for out of the kids inheritance, they can pay.

My wife was a family therapist, she thinks the black coffee thing is silly....but, she drinks her coffee black.

I liked the article about the narcissist.............I think it was right on.
