Love our Genie belt drive opener we got last year. Had two Sears chain drive ones before the new one. Both lasted about 15 years. The Genie is so quiet I never hear anyone come in unlike the old noisy chain driven ones. Am very pleased with the Genie unit. We have one very large garage door so this time, went with a 3/4 unit. The only downside is when the power goes out, need to pull the plug out and re-install to make it work. Odd, but called up Genie and was told it's normal. Go figure.
Looks like our oldest is moving to the Orlando area by August, building a new house in Kissimmee area and know the middle girl will follow also. Wife prefers the west coast and think the Ft. What bothers me most about these school shootings, aside from the horrible loss of life, is that nothing changes. If the suspect survives, there is no justice for the victims - usually an insanity plea and that's that. Schools certainly have not become any safer. I don't have the answer - just a parent of a young child trying to find some way to explain it.

This suspect, 19 years old, was a fanatical firearms worshipper and, based on his school history, was emotionally and psychologically troubled, at the very least.  This act was probably “payback” to the educational institution that expelled him.

To see so many teenagers killed and wounded is horrific.  Mental health - the lack thereof - is the prime cause of mass killings in our schools.

This occurred in my community.  I know the Sheriff (Scott Israel) and can imagine what he is going through as well since he has emotional and social ties to many of those students and families.

May the injured recover and may God hold close to his bosom those children who succumbed to this act of violence.  :'(

    @28firefighter,
Bad events like this are going to happen, but you can't do much about it.
How many schools are there? The bunker mentality just isn't good for society.
We had the Sandy Hook tragedy very close to us.

Let's try to veer away from talk about gun violence if we may. It may prove unmanageable and then we'll have a big mess to contend with. There are excellent and civil discussions on this subject in Quora if anyone is interested.

What is especially tragic is apparently the school knew he was a threat- and his social media accounts were red flags as well. No way he should have been allowed to have access to any type of weapon.

I am totally not buying this guy's story (as reported). Failure of brakes, gear shifter, ignition system and pedal position sensor all simultaneously? I don't think so.

Wait, let me guess the follow up story:

"Examination of the car after the incident did not reveal any obvious fault"

in the old days, believing that all the systems failed at the same time was hard. But these days, with so many systems completely computer controlled, it is more plausible.

Watching the local news since this afternoon, apparently he was able to get away from the school and was apprehended a few miles away. But, someone failed knowing all the red flags that were there concerning his behavior and things he said. Just heard that 12 victims are still in the school while two were killed outside the school and one a few blocks away. Three have passed at the local hospital. Just turned the television off as need time to process this all. That school, plus the one in our town, are very very sought after schools...reason we bought here were for the schools my kids went to. Things like this just don't happen in middle class area like ours, until they do!
Just glad my kids are older now but still as a parent, I feel the need to hear from them daily and try to do just that. Could not fathom the loss of one's child in this manner, or in any manner because parents are not supposed to outlive their children!!!

The second is an Internet rumor that Uber will soon allow riders to opt for only women drivers on pick up. This is supposedly because of women fearing attack by male drivers especially if the are alone or drunk.

In my opinion such a provision would be illegal discrimination but maybe I'm misunderstanding Title VIIII.

You folks are smarter than me so what do you say?

I don't know anything about Title VIIII but I know there is no way a car can be on an interstate going 100 MPH for 50 miles with a jammed gas pedal without hitting something. Just ain't gonna happen. But it does make for good internet hype.

I read that whole report. IMO, time for a sobriety test. This driver, allegedly:

    1. Avoided police road spikes
    2. Couldn't put the transmission in neutral
    3. Couldn't turn off the ignition
    4. Couldn't brake the car
He didn't avoid road spikes. He road over the first ones and they didn't do anything. The 2nd and 3rd pair did stop him. Last I heard it was a stuck gas pedal.

Maybe you don't think of turning off the ignition or putting the car in neutral when you are going 100 mph on a highway trying to dodge other cars......it is possible.
You should read/listen to the report and the audio. You might change your mind there. I did anyway.
I saw the video....cops were following him with cameras. The cops laid out the spike belt and he just drove right over it...sent it flying. One cop said it seemed to be a stuck gas pedal. It could be fake and trying to get out of a ticket, or DUI, I don't know, but, stuck gas pedal sounds very possible.

Re UBER.....a rider, or a driver can accept or decline any driver or rider they want now. Not sure what it means to say you can request a female (or male) exclusive driver.

Not to belabor this but the story I read was that Uber was going to allow customers to choose female only. As a customer you certainly can discriminate no matter what it says about you as a person but I always thought it would be illegal for the COMPANY to be officially a part of it. Just think the outcry if the KKK wanted an option to exclude based on race. Same thing isn't it?

This only stuck with me because my son just signed up with Lyft.

It may just be an internet hoax but my sense of fair play was tweaked.

    In other news....

Now that I am in the exclusive territory of you rich guys with HD TV I discovered that I now get the Velocity Channel. Was watching the Chasing Classic cars show and the guy went to an auction where they sold a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB N.A.R.T. Spyder for over $27 million. He got to drive it before it went to auction.

I'd be wetting my pants over the thought of dinging it. :'(
I think single guys will over-use the "female only" feature.

Schools in CA perform active shooter drills similar to the way you and I did fire drills in grade school. Sad, but true.

They also generally "lock down" schools in session, and really "lock them down" if something happens, and staff and students are trained in what to do in an active-shooter situation. Schools are built with heavy metal fencing or chain link fencing all around in every gap from every direction. I would say that makes them somewhat safer.

Still, I'd rather law enforcement spend more time on finding active shooters than giving 80 MPH tickets on I15S near Escondido where the speed limit is reduced from 70 to 65 for no good reason.

Coincidental, but I took my “date” out for a nice Valentine’s Dinner last night on KYFDX’s side of the Ohio River. I parked the car and as we were walking to the restaurant, my date, looking straight ahead, yelled “Oh My Gawd”!. Following her line of site, I saw a guy walking towards us with a gun in a holster around his waist.

We both stopped dead in our tracks. He kept on walking and snickering as he passed us. I’ll assume in KY it’s legal to open carry fire arms.

As we talked over dinner, we came to the conclusion that his gun wasn’t for protection, but for the shocked attention he received when people noticed him carrying it.

True; Kentucky is an open carry state. I have occasionally carried my P85 in a holster coming back from training, etc., but I don’t make a habit of it. If I win the election I will almost certainly carry concealed whenever I’m traveling to and from the courthouse. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Young people are growing up and landing sweet jobs as "civil servants", and will no doubt serve as competently and diligently as the wonderful prior generations who bring so much logic and joy to our roadways.

Around here, the signs just flash when you go more than 5 over. It's sometimes way too tempting to go for a high score, of sorts. I'm going 6 over an underposted limit that hasn't changed since Truman was in office? Shame on me!

RB...you’re an officer of the court (or will be again, shortly). I understand your need.

This guy? I know I shouldn’t profile, but if the guy we saw was anything other than a fringe dwelling psycho, I’d be shocked. My “friend” said she thought he was living a childhood dream of being a cowboy. PRobably some truth there.

Don’t get me wrong. I own guns....a 12 gauge and a 9mm hand gun. I’m not anti-gun! This guy carrying one on his hip in a Wyatt Earp holster to take a stroll down a highly populated entertainment district (KYFDX...we were at Newport on the Landing) stirred a lot of negative reactions as people cut a wide swath away from him. Probably more than just a little fear mixed in, too. Carrying it caused more distrust of him, than it did respect, which is what he was trying to demand.

I read that there were numerous attempts to lay the spikes.

First is a run away BMW on the turnpike in Florida that BMW says couldn't happen.

That's what I saw too. One of those strips finally got the tires and he was riding on the rims for I don't remember how long/far. The guy had to be a pretty good driver to stay on the road under those circumstances. He might have been a brain dead dope but still pretty good behind the wheel.

Doesn’t pass the “smell” test. He won’t brake at 100 MPH because he’s afraid to lost control? But, he drove on 4 tireless rims, like that offered lots of control?

    Not buying his story!

    Your tax dollars at work:

Here in San Diego they settle for stationary radar signs that have a blue and red flasher light when you exceed the limit by more than 10. I enjoy setting off the flashers. Must be the 3-year old inside me.

The red & blue flashers are the newest latest and greatest thing. Usually in the past it was just the flashing numbers or a flashing "slow down" in between flashing your "score." I think it works in that it reminds you the mobile stationary radar jig is brought to you by the Police Department.

I wonder if they store any of the readings, maybe a wi-fi connection to upload readings in the triple digits. You know, to alert them that the radar might be broken.

Hopefully they are used to appease an old geezer that lives nearby and called to complain about those "damn speeders."

Agreed. There is no legitimacy here.

Won't use the parking brake? So he'd rather crash and potentially die than break his brakes?

It smells like he lost some teenage style "bet" and had to do this stupid stunt.

Looking for an appropriate auto sales job is not as easy as one might think. Seems like (and of course it makes sense once you think about it) many of the available positions that DON'T require previous experience are stores you really don't want to work at. For example, I came upon an internet sales role that sounded promising... until I realized where it is, which is a dealer we visited once a couple of years ago where we were presented a sales contract at full asking price PLUS a $1k "dealer prep fee." We obviously exited quickly.

I've tagged a few possibilities at this point. A VW dealer that I have been to only twice: once just browsing the lot and nobody came out to see me and the other time to turn in my TDI (turn-in was fine but a salesperson behind the front desk was quite rude when he found out I didn't need a replacement vehicle). A Chevy dealer I never even heard of, but the ad mentions sales and entry-level finance, so that's interesting. The third is with an internet aftermarket parts site. I'd imagine the pay there is quite limited.

Still not totally sold on the whole idea. Doing something new and different and that obviously incorporates something I love is exciting. But trolling for customers and dealing with difficult people goes with the territory and would get old very quick. Oh, not to mention the crazy hours.

I can imagine the hours being quite crazy. Weekends too, right? The VW dealer sounds promising. A good mix of products. It would be fun to park your F150 in the front every day.

As Lee Iacocca once said (something like) "you can't sell cars unless you have fire in the belly".

I think that is essentially correct. You have to love selling if you want to be genuinely successful at it, and not just make a basic wage. It's like politics. If you don't absolutely love it, don't do it.
