Bottom line, I’ve introduced my son’s friend to “MY ACURA GUY”. He’s upfront, laid back, the most “non-sales” sales guy I’ve ever come across. He’s been at the dealership for I’m guessing 15 years. And like Isellhondas when he was still in the biz, works mostly referrals. So, no “if we-will you?” games.

Not sure the direction this will go. Son’s friend loves the styling of the ‘18 TLX, but can get a ‘17 that’s really loaded up for about the same price.

At this point, I step away.

Sedans are out of favor, so it's probably a good time to buy one.

At this point/stage of my life, comfort is the paramount variable in the selection of my car.  Sedans are the most comfortable in terms of easy-in, easy-out; width and thigh settings; elbow room and comfort for my derrière; trunk capacity for shopping; left and right arm rests; and the physical height of the car.

I used to to drive only coupes with 4, 5, and 6 speed stick transmissions.  Those were the good old days.  Now, sedans completely meet my needs for a daily driver.

I never understood the lure of SUVs. A truck hauls more stuff, a minivan hauls people just as well, a sedan gives you more comfort and better handling.

I drove a Ford Expedition yesterday and didn't like it at all. Felt like I was sitting up on a bar stool and the internal ergonomics were poor. It actually had less driver room than some small sedans I've driven.

Some people claim SUVs are a way to flaunt your wealth. I suppose.

interesting thing happened to me last night. First a little background, my grandparents were hoarders and when they passed on we threw a lot of stuff away but we all ended up with some stuff, some keepable others questionable. Somehow I ended up with an old ledger book that I never opened and forgot about until last night.

In it were three hand written speeches that my great grandfather gave when he was a school teacher in Iowa dated in the 1880's. there was also a letter dated in the 20's offering to see him 100 shares of an oil company drilling in west Texas. Plus the stock certificate for the 100 shares.

Well I will be doing some research tonight

When I took the wife to look at TLXs last fall, she actually like the front end styling of the 17 more than the 18. I was fine either way.

An Expedition is not really a typical SUV these days. More people are opting for compact, car based versions like the CRV and Rogue. They have higher and more comfortable seating than their sedan counterparts, but aren’t ginormous. Hardly wealth flaunters!

That's certainly an incorrect overgeneralization. Something like a CRV or Sorento isn't flaunting anything.

As for the lure, I think many people will tell you that the higher seating position, easier ingress/egress, and AWD are the leading reasons. On SOME SUVs and for SOME reasons given to have said SUVs, I of course agree with your arguments about functionality. That is why we have a minivan for troop transport purposes.

Modern CUVs are like a Swiss Army knife. Can do a little bit of everything. Plus many folks like a bit higher seating position.

When you only own one car, it’s good that it can cover multiple duties. A Crv or Pilot, depending on how big you want, can do that.

I just think of our RDX as a high riding TLX wagon anyway. And soon I have to use it to help move my daughter back from college. And it will be way handier for that than my Elantra sedan (which is only about 3” shorter). And next week when I go pick up a new gas grill, it will slide right in.

Glad it's not just me. I find it rather stodgy and old-looking from certain angles. At least on the '17 they finally got the shield nose to look good and not like a beak.

@suydam - I do agree with you about certain points. It is all about personal preference. I happen to like sedans & coupes. As far as my daily driving goes, most of the time it is just me. Some nights on my way home I have to pick one of my boys up from hockey practice. My Infiniti is the perfect combination of power, comfort, & space. I can fit another kid & their hockey bag in my Infiniti's trunk. This may change as my (almost) 9 year old wants to play goalie full time next year.

My parents (in their late 60's & early 70's) both drive SUVs. I can assure you it is for every reason except fuel economy & flaunting their wealth. My Dad drives a 2015 Tahoe LT (& has a 2018 GMC Yukon SLT on order) because it is comfortable for him (6'2") & his dog (a 130 lb Great Dane). He loves the look of his truck, the smooth V8, & the solid ride of a big, body-on-frame truck. The 4WD system works fantastic as well. My Mom drives a 2016 Porsche Cayenne V6 because she loves the way it looks, handles, & she can fit either my 3 kids or my sister's 2 kids in it.

I wasn't really referring to CUVs (after all, I own the original). As to flaunting wealth, I saw a Hynduai Santa Fe at the car show with a mid 40s sticker. That's wealth to me.

It's just when you get up close to an $80k price for the big ones it doesn't make sense to me. At that price I'd want it to haul a load of cows or do 0-60 in 4 sec. With a plus 1.0g.

You guys are so touchy, it's not like I criticized their rear leg room or something. :)

0-60 in 5.2 and the drag coefficient is probably around 1.0 - but a little more than 80K.

I wouldn't worry about getting a goalie bag in the trunk of your Infinity. Unless your 2015 is smaller than Son #1's 2013 G37, the goalie bag will fit. Last weekend Grandson #2 and Grandson #4 had hockey tournaments in two different cities. So my Son took Grandson #4 (12 year old, first team, #1 goalie) to DC for his tournament in the 2013 Infinity while his wife took Grandson #2 (14 year old, first team, first line center) to his tournament in Hershey PA. I know size matters for hauling hockey stuff around but size isn't the determinate for playing the game. A little story about that as told to me by Son #1:

As I'm sure I have mentioned before, Grandson #4 is a small for his age, almost all of the kids he plays with and against are about a full head taller than him. He really likes to play out on the ice but last year his coach thought the best was to keep him alive was to try him out at goalie to see how he did there. Fortunately for him, although he didn't really like that idea at first, he did well enough that they wanted him to play goalie. So that is his primary position now.

I'm sure you have noticed at tournaments, that some out of town teams have some pretty big kids on their teams. Grandson #4's team came in second place to a team that had BIG kids. In fact his coach thought that one kid on the opposing team needed a shave. They lost to this team the first time they played them (5 to 3) but they didn't lose again so their reward for that was to play them for the championship. They lost that game too (2 to 1) but from what my Son and a few of his teammates parents told me, he played out of his you know what and if he had a little more help they could have won the championship. Grandson #4 was furious at himself for allowing a breakaway goal that gave the winners their second goal early in the 3 period. Fast forward to the last couple of minutes in the 3rd period just before he was about to be pulled to get another player on the ice, when this same big kid stole the puck again and was bearing down on him. He decided he wasn't going to make the same mistake again and wait on this kid to get to the net so he went out of goal and went up ice about 15 feet to meet him. BAM, BIG collision and although he managed to block the shot he paid the price. Both kids were now sprawled out on the ice. A BIG hush now took over the arena. Grandson #4 was being told by his coach to stay down, as he was trying to get up, but he got up anyway and skated to the bench. The other kid was still laying on the ice but he also got up about 30 seconds later and skated off the ice. Neither kid had a concussion or any lingering affects.

When his coach asked him why he was so insistent to get up so fast, he said in an angered tone, "because I wanted too. I wanted to at least get up before he did. I wanted him to know he couldn't score on me again on a breakaway like he did the first time just because he is bigger than all the other kids on the ice". :@

After games on the way home, win or lose, Son #1 always discusses with his Sons how they played or should have played. When he had that discussion on the way home from DC with his little tiger, my Grandson said, "I learned that I can play with a team full of big kids but when is the league going to stop allowing ringers to play in these tournaments". Over the years I have heard my Son say that is one of the biggest problems with out of town tournament hockey.

Just in case you guys are wondering where Grandson #4 gets his fiery attitude, he gets it from his Grandmother.

Another update on my latest mess/stress.  An AC specialist and plumbing company have to come out to my condo to cut through the wall in my foyer and find the break in the condensation drain that hooks up to the main line that is causing the leaking behind that wall.  They are trying to get here before the end of the day.

They said it would cost me $380.00 to repair the plastic pipes and joints and realign the piping connected to my AC unit. Then, I have to have the wall repaired and painted which will cost me another $300-$500.

Just another her day in the life of abacomike.

What a hassle! At least it isn’t going to cost too much as these things go.

Personally I find the new version more attractive.

As do I but I wonder how the swoopy style effects interior space. The one pictured looks like it would be more practical.

I guess that's the latest kick that I'm on now that my son is working for Lyft. His 2005 Sable is ideal for this purpose; good interior space, pretty good gas milage and fully depreciated. Right now the oldest car they accept is a 2004 so I'm assuming in a few years his car will age out and he'll have to find another. I'll be searching the seas for a car that depreciates fast so is cheap, gets good milage and has plenty of rear leg room like the Malibu.

Hey driver. I hang out a bit at the Talk Tennis Tennis Warehouse forum. Sorry to be cheating on you guys.  :(
But, my tennis game has improved drastically.  B)

I read that you use to teach drivers ed.? My son starts classes and driving instruction this weekend thru AAA. Hopefully they can get thru to Little Jip on becoming a better defensive driver
    :s

Hey Jip....teach him to always think about the worst possible thing the other driver could do.....and then be prepared...because they often do it. Someone taught me that and it has proven to be of great value over the years.

I may check out that Talk Tennis Forum.....I love tennis. Back home I play almost every day, here 3 or 4 times a week.

I played yesterday and this player drove a bullet shot right at my shoe. I put my racquet down at just the right angle...the ball hit my racquet, went over the head of the guy who drilled it, and came down in the corner of the court. Not only did we get the point...it demoralized my opponents.

Compare the 2018 Malibu to the previous model......and you will see it has more room in the new one. They must have done some careful redesigning.

To quote Car Connection - but may say the samel
The Chevy Malibu is very well-packaged, addressing our concerns about its cramped predecessor. Four passengers are a cinch and a third person can sit in the rear middle seat without too many complaints. There’s excellent stretch-out leg room for all and we commend Chevrolet for including thoughtful touches like well-placed padded surfaces where knees and elbows might rest.

interesting thing happened to me last night.

Heck you just might unseat Jeff Bezos!

Agreed! The whole sensors-in-the-tires thing is just nuts. Possibly useful once in a while, but at what cost? And, how reliable?! I'm constantly getting false-positives from my Audi because of all the electronic gizmos on it.

Back up.... BEEP BEEP BEEP you're gonna hit something! No, nevermind, just ice over the sensor(s). Your brake pads are shot! Oh, nevermind, just a broken wire due to snow and ice. /sigh

Compare the 2018 Malibu to the previous model......and you will see it has more room in the new one. They must have done some careful redesigning.

Well, they made it enormous. It is a very large car. I liked the 2008-12 design better than either of the later two although that had its flaws as well. As I've posted before I dislike the scowling look of the front end along with the bulk of this one.
