I have to switch...column on E400, console on the C250. Takes awhile to adjust, then I have to adjust back again!
I will say...the nice thing about the small column shifter is you can pretty well change gears with your hand still on the steering wheel....whereas, with a console shifter you have to remove your right hand from the wheel, and bring it down to the console.
Two words...shifter paddles!
I just mean a shifter to put the car in Park, Drive, Reverse etc. The Mercedes dainty little stick is easy to reach while your hands are on the steering wheel, compared to reaching down to the console.
Maybe it is just me but paddle shifters are about the least necessary item on any of my cars.
Nah, not enough power to move with authority with half a dozen zombies hanging on it.
Yeah but what if your Dodge Demon breaks down in the desert with hordes of zombies just over the ridgeline? You can fix a Volvo 122 with stuff you find on the side of the road.
@driver100, I think you are a good candidate for an autonomous vehicle. Operating a car seems to be a challenge for you. Personally, I'm with stickguy, unless a manual transmission, you just about never shift with the car in motion. If it's not moving you don't need any hands on the wheel.

I've been harping on the uselessness of nitrogen tire filling for quite some time. I've "grown" since, and have come to the understanding that the nitrogen is irrelevant -- the key is "dry" nitrogen (dew point at -50 deg or more), which can be purchased in cylinders.
The deal is that the water vapour in atmospheric air contains quite a lot of water, and it's the water that causes the wide pressure variations that come with temperature changes. I deal with dry gas at work, so this does meet the smell test, at least for me.
That said, how does one know what's being pumped into their tires? Do you trust your dealer? Do you?
You can tell by those little green valve covers they put on.
Got to drive my first MB today...a black on black GLS 450. Pretty nice big SUV. Had an unnecessarily complex gear shift. But it rode nice. Delivered it to a MB dealer which surprised me since I didn't think MB would sell rental cars.
Got to see how my Mustang would handle in the snow when I drive one of our V6s. Did pretty good.
So what do you do you have old former a few days a week sounds similar to what Sandy in Florida does nice write up on the cars drove over the past few days

Tip? I was lucky they let me inside out of the snow to wait for my ride.

I didn't want to be a scrooge so I didn't say anything. I would have said the same thing but I left that up to our bubble bursting, prior salesman, poster buddy @isellhondas. It's more fitting for him to be the heavy with stuff like this.
You never said why your nephew wanted to ditch his 2017 Civic. Maybe with that info some specific help could be provided but more than likely not. I never did understand why anyone would want to get rid of a perfectly good reliable car that was only a year old unless they just flat out couldn't afford it. Now, if he simply fell out of love with it, that kind of rationale will probably repeat itself. And I doubt anyone in here could help with that.
Just curious, did you offer to help or were you commandeered?

Not commandeered, his mother considers me the car guy so always asks. I can't let on that I'm not the expert she thinks I am.
If I could buy this car for the loan payout I'd do it if I could figure a reason why I needed another car and didn't have at least 3 other cars I want more.

I pull up to my driveway, and i have to back in...or it will be very hard to get out...it is a curving driveway. I stop on the road, and without my hands leaving the steering wheel, I reach with my fingers and put the car in reverse. When I am backed in, I can reach the button on the small stick and press in...put the car in Park.
With a console shift I would have to seek out the shifter with my hand...possibly look down to locate it....twice, for finding reverse and park. Not a big deal, but, easier when it is right by my hand anyway. I know the difference, I have one car with the little column shifter....one on the console.
@driver100, With your lack of confidence taking a hand off the steering wheel, I can see why a shift like that is attractive to you. My advice, don't ever rent a Camry which has a gated shift pattern. It will send you over the edge.

Funny Houdini one I know this voice dictation screws up everyone’s name like mentioned in prior comments that was hilarious what you mentioned above ha ha Ha
Just saw an episode of Overhauling where they redid some guy's 55 t bird. Instead of wide whitewalls they painted the edge of the wheels for a whitewall effect. I liked it. I know some of you don't agree with me but I think white walls on a classic car are nice.
Someone must agree with me because I was watching a Chasing Classic Cars episode where the guy bought a 31 Packard roadster with huge whitewalls. He replaced them with black tires and when he took it to auction it flopped not meeting reserve.

Baloney-walls look great on a 30s car but the more modern cars require a thinner stripe IMO. That T-Bird looks good with whites although I find the wheels rather ummm......"busy". But I guess bling was the thing for this build, so he's payin', so he gets what he wants.
"busy" is putting it kindly. Wide whitewalls look good if that is the way the car looked originally...that is the idea, make it look the way it was. The wheels are particularly ugly because they weren't around then....and even ugly today when they are way to "busy"....even "tacky".

Has nothing to do with confidence....has to do with convenience. If it is easy to reach life is easier.....it is more comfortable. I have driven cars with gated patterns.......also, an extra complication.
The wheels on that Thunderbird are painful. I've also seen blackwalls converted into whitewalls, I think some places still do it, along with selling white bands you can stick on the tire.
For wide whites, I think they were common until MY 1960 or so, in 61 there was a movement towards medium width whitewalls, then by 62-64 many cars changed to narrow band whitewalls, although maybe some premium brand domestics used a slightly thicker whitewall. Foreign brands changed later - MB had wide whites through MY 1964.
Last night, I drove up to Palm Beach with a friend of mine who manages a Honda dealership down here. He had passes to the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens. He had a suite at The Breakers so we stayed there last night. The place is exquisite and quite plush.
Spent the day at the Honda Classic and got a chance to see Justin Thomas play and followed Tiger Woods for a few holes. We then went back to The Breakers for dinner.
It was s beautiful day - in the mid 80’s - but very windy out of the east southeast. I really enjoyed seeing Tiger playing better golf, but I’m a big fan of Justin Thomas and Rory MacElroy. Was quite enjoyable.

I'm volunteering at the US Senior Open at the Broadmoor at the end of June. Working VIP Transportation, so will be shuttling players from the airport to the course, and turning over the courtesy cars to them.
The official vehicle of the USGA is Lexus, so I suspect I'll be driving the GX and LX SUV's, as well as the LS sedan.

WOW, am I ever glad I finally figured out your problem. I don't think I could have slept a wink until I helped you.
I have diagnosed your problem as being a neck injury brought on by playing tennis. Therefore, I recommend abstinence from tennis until your neck has healed.
I would say your neck will be fully healed in about 2 weeks, give or take. Look at it this way, you won't lose any matches during this period but we will probably be even more inundated with your posts during this period so it won't be exactly painless for the rest of us but we'll just have to suck it up during your recovery period.

I saw something funny at the grocery yesterday, an old codger in a '90s era Pontiac was trying to back into a parking space so he opened the door and leaned out looking over his shoulder. It didn't help; he still ended up with the driver's side of the car being at least 1.5 feet over the line. I was in a hurry so I didn't have time to watch the entire exhibition of his parking prowess, but as I walked by he had pulled out and was preparing to take another shot at that incredibly difficult feat of low speed maneuvering...

What's your opinion of chrome wheels? I suppose you hate them too but I've always liked them. There's a 2005-09 Mustang down the street from me with chrome wheels, lowered and a few other cosmetic mods in Navy blue paint that to me looks sharp with chrome. Am I strange?
Depends on the car really. My opinion is that they look best on hot rods and customs, and nothing else. Chrome wheels don't stand alone--they need a whole chromey/blingy car to go with them.
A similar thing happened to someone else a few years ago, and I asked him to stay, just ignore the hecklers, they aren't worth the aggravation. There are some great people here, I love reading their posts and sharing ideas, information and fun.
JMonroe made a joke...and I like that, he can dish it out and take it in a fun way......I know when the dark negative comments appear along with the ganging up it isn't meant to be funny.
I like to feel that I add something positive to the world, make someone's life more pleasant, more informative, more enjoyable in some ways. Some will be disappointed if I stay....but that is a good thing. From now on I'll just ignore negative people.....it is what I do in real life anyway.
Thanks for your comments carnaught, GG, Marco, suydam, snake, etc - they mean a lot.
@driver100, I think you are a good candidate for an autonomous vehicle. Operating a car seems to be a challenge for you. Personally, I'm with stickguy, unless a manual transmission, you just about never shift with the car in motion. If it's not moving you don't need any hands on the wheel.
Most medical people would charge for this type of remote diagnosis but not me.
Good luck,
Dr. jmonroe
Can you get me some painkillers, doc?
Try a good bourbon, it really won't heal your neck any faster but it will make staying at home a lot more fun.
That reminds me of what I heard a heavy drinker say years ago.
"I feel sorry for you folks who don't drink because when you wake up in the morning that's as good as you're going to feel all day".
Probably true.

Maybe it is just me but paddle shifters are about the least necessary item on any of my cars.

It was amusing to have the kids in the showroom with the $1000 suits and the $200 haircuts repeatedly call me sir. I guess they train them well.

It sounds like you have to find a way to fall in love with that Civic and ditch one of your hoopties. Don't worry, the Civic will have rust on it in no time.

With your lack of confidence taking a hand off the steering wheel, I can see why a shift like that is attractive to you.
My advice, don't ever rent a Camry which has a gated shift pattern. It will send you over the edge.
Someone must agree with me because I was watching a Chasing Classic Cars episode where the guy bought a 31 Packard roadster with huge whitewalls. He replaced them with black tires and when he took it to auction it flopped not meeting reserve.

Given the amount of stuff the normal touring pro has with them, I'm not surprised that the Pilot and Odyssey were popular.
Be hilarious to see if one of those mammoth tour bags would fit into the back of a Civic Type R.

I am taking a break....I am tired of the jackels coming out of the woodwork.
I always try to treat people with respect and dignity - there are a few people (very small few - most of you are great guys) who like to gang up and make these demeaning comments. I taught driving to high school students, so I probably know more than the posters who make the senseless comments.
I don't need that. Not my thing guys.
