Yesterday some 11,000 vehicles were stuck in a traffic jam somewhere in China. I wonder if some of these people ever got home or simply run out of gas.

If you look to the far left side where the highway continues the traffic seems to fall off (no headlights or tailights) in both directions......is that a giant sink hole?
Looks like Seattle! Ferry boats and all!

It sounds like they told you it was cracked so they could put it into next months sales...maybe they made their quota for this month.........doubt it, but you never know.

Another thing about that picture of the highway, how come there are big hooks ready to pick up cars?

    @driver100,
I'm saying they told me the roof is cracked and they have to order a new piece of glass.
It wasn't cracked when I test drove it last Monday.

Probably got cracked when the lot boy took it through the wash bay at 80. :s

Got to drive my first MB today...a black on black GLS 450. Pretty nice big SUV. Had an unnecessarily complex gear shift. But it rode nice. Delivered it to a MB dealer which surprised me since I didn't think MB would sell rental cars.

Got to see how my Mustang would handle in the snow when I drive one of our V6s. Did pretty good.

Also got to drive a Caddy XTS and a Mini.

    Fun day.

OF....what were your driving impressions as far as steering and ride, comfort, solidness etc. You must have noticed.

GLS450 is way to big for me....a car isn't fun when it is that big, but, it must be comfortable.

I wasn't in favor of the gear shifter and I still am not sure it is the best way to make a shifter, I like the idea of a floor shift, but, that is kind of crude these days compared to the all electronic smaller shifter. Plus, it isn't in the way taking up a lot of valuable space. I think there is a way to improve shifters, not Chryslers dial-a-drive, not BMWs beer tap (though not too bad), not Nissans gears coming out of the dash, not Edsels buttons on the steering wheel, but, something.
The steering was not notable but I didn't get to toss it around since I was driving in a snow storm. The ride was firm but not jarring. The interior was definitely more upscale than the Ford SUVs of similar size. Nice leather seats and what looked like real wood trim. Yes, it was too big to be a daily driver for me (and I drive a full sized cargo van). I had to sneak it out from a tight parking spot and had a hard time judging where the edges were. Also the avoidance nannies were overly sensitive, going off at passing street signs.
C'mon, how could it be that sensitive? Are you sure you weren't driving on the sidewalk? :o

    That's another benefit, more storage.

When shifters moved to the column in the 30s, it was seen as modern tech. It eventually was seen as stodgy, and floor shifters, with the pretense of sport, became the rage. At least in a few applications, the ideal has changed back again.

Fintail, when I bought the BMW 740i after owning many MB’s, I kept turning on the wiper motor because I was so used to the right column shifter.  It took me some time to re-adjust back to the column shifter when I got the S 450 last November.  I prefer the column electronic shifter because it provides additional stowage space for the “huge” console compartment in the S 450.

That sounds like a lot of copy-cating going on these days. I should have know these new car designers couldn't come up with that idea on their own.

Old becomes new...it just takes time. :(

I have to switch...column on E400, console on the C250. Takes awhile to adjust, then I have to adjust back again!

I will say...the nice thing about the small column shifter is you can pretty well change gears with your hand still on the steering wheel....whereas, with a console shifter you have to remove your right hand from the wheel, and bring it down to the console.

Not when you have paddle shifters. Are you sure you don't own a wannabe? :o Even Mrs. j's Subie has paddle shifters.

I don't think it is that big of a bargain. That is a base GT, which is selling for $32.5k on truecar. So $7500 to bolt in a $4k blower and $250 tuner doesn't seem like a deal at all to me.

American Muscle does show that kit for $7400, though. So I guess you could do worse. Their claim, however, is south of 700hp. Hmmm...

I think the ideal shifter would be a small slider just along the left side of the console. It could light up,,,green for drive, red for park, flash red for neutral, orange for reverse. It could be about 6 inches long, and the slider would be about 2 inches wide. What could possibly go wrong?

Then last year a couple who are both alumni opened an ice cream shop not far from the house that serves primarily creamery ice cream so it's always available for us.

I think the column vs. floor shifter question depends on the vehcle. I never had a problem with column shifters and thought they made a lot of sense when the car was large and had a bench seat wide enough to fit 3 across. Once you got down to a car like my ATS you would never fit 3 across even if it had a bench so the console/floor shift makes sense, as it does in most sporty cars. But in something like a new Taurus or Lacrosse the consoles are ridiculously wide and they would probably make more sense with a nicely designed front bench. Same with most pickups, some of which have consoles the size of coffee tables.

    Here's some news I didn't know:

So Geely of China (or more accurately, its Chairman) now owns 10% of Daimler.

    Things could get interesting.

What are these "leftovers" you speak of?

You're supposed to put that chili over spaghetti, then a mound of finely grated cheddar chesse (3-way). Add beans or onions for a 4-way, or beans and onions for a 5-way.

Or, you can put the chili on a hot dog.

Oh....it's legit. That dealership has been offering new "modified" Mustangs for a while, now.

May take a little trip there this weekend and see if I can snag a test drive.

They may be offering a screaming bargain just to get their name out there. If so this would be a time not to overthink the offer. It could be like Isell's stories of the customer who gets an accidental below cost deal and then blows it by leaving to think about it.

Hmmm...

Ok so you pay that for the supercharger and then as much again to have someone install it.

Or he could pay a premium for the name.

You know, when GG first mentioned that deal I briefly considered driving my car out there to get the treatment. Since the fastest I've had the car up to was 90 and that was when my niece was driving I think it would be wasted on me too.

But GG is still young and feisty so maybe he should go for it.

    Ok, advice time.

My nephew wants to sell his 2017 Civic with under 10k miles. He still owes slightly north of $17k on it. Book is about $18k.

What would you reccommend as a marketing venue? Seems too new and pricey for Craigslist.

How would you handle the lien payoff?

He has the Honda cache' going for him so it should be an easy sell. I'm kind of out of my element here as my experience has been cash in the driveway deals.

Going back to the post on the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe, I saw one... on the street.... today! Aside from its hideous front end, not a bad looking vehicle. But, OMG is that front end way, WAAAAAAAAY north of hideous.

Many manufacturers do winter performance testing on their mules here, and I had seen it a couple times prior all dressed down in its camo, but they did a good job on that because I would have never guessed it to look like it does. Today, the camo was off, though there were several places where there were bits of the tape, etc., still adhering to the otherwise slightly creamed white color.

What would you reccommend as a marketing venue? Seems too new and pricey for Craigslist.

How would you handle the lien payoff?

He has the Honda cache' going for him so it should be an easy sell. I'm kind of out of my element here as my experience has been cash in the driveway deals.

    1. Best advice.... keep the car for another six months at least, and pay down the loan so that he is solidly under the private party market value. This gives him flexibility in terms of what he wants, and what he is willing to take.

    2. Don't pay off the loan. This can actually work against you, because sometimes it can take several weeks for the lender to release the title. If he keeps paying as normal, then it is a known quantity regardless of when the buyer comes along.

    3. I have sold several vehicles via CL or local Facebook sales groups, and I have never had an issue (regardless of vehicle value). You just need the buyer to be on the ball and have financing lined up. Once the deal is struck, get a loan payoff quote from your institution, give that to the buyer to take to his institution, and, when that place is ready to close, go in, sign off on a couple documents, hand over the keys, get a check for the balance (the institution will pay off your lender directly), and walk away.

I would never (personally) try to sell a pricey car on CL that had a lien on it (to me, over 10K is pricey for CL). You take out all the cash in pocket, need car today buyers. So if possible, find the money to pay off the loan, get the title, then try to sell.

the other thing I would do on a nice new car like that, with low miles, is hit the nearest couple of Honda dealers and closest Carmax type place to get a buy offer. they might surprise you. If nothing else, you get a solid baseline.

Wes, I thought that (from the pics on the link Marco posted) the new Santa Fe looked good. Similar to the current model, but smaller headlights. But attractive. Interior quiet a bit upgraded.

That Explorer review was really messed up. It was an XLT with Sport package, so it does not have the 365 horsepower engine. You get that in the Sport model, which something else.

I liked the santa fe too....the front end looked like it was meant for business, and it was unique. Reminded me of the G Wagon...in a good way.

Your W204 C was the last automatic new platform MB sedan introduced with a console shift, and it might be the last ever -

    Two words...shifter paddles! ;)

why do I need my hands on the wheel when I am shifting gears? Would be stopped at that point anyway!

Volvo has quite a few lustworthy classics out there, but if you're trying to keep it affordable, you'll have a hard time finding a better deal than a Volvo 122. It's not quite a P1800, but you still get plenty of style. And if you're concerned about safety, the 122 was the first car to offer a three-point seatbelt as standard back in 1959.

I like those. A few IPD upgrades and can have quite a fun little toy. Built like a tank, if you can find one without rust.

One of the best cars ever made in the entire world, hands-down. Simple, tough, easy to work on, no problem for parts except maybe a few odd fussy trim pieces. Roomy enough for 4 people, big trunk, good on gas, easy to drive, good handling and brakes, outstanding heater. Places like IPD can help you improve on the car's very few weak spots---flattening cams, fiber timing gear (what were they thinking?) and teensy u-joints. You fix those things and this car will run just about forever. Great choice for the upcoming zombie apocalypse!

Particularly nice mods are electronic ignition, a later B20E head from a 140 series, and of course, an overdrive unit.

Anyone putting a Weber carburetor on one of these will be shot.
