On valuation tools, does NADA offer a private party valuation? I thought they were strictly dealer retail and trade in values.
I checked and you are correct - only dealer retail and trade in. So it can’t be a primary valuation tool. It actually is abgood reason to pull back on the offer - the gentleman was not using a right offer. Dealer retail includes both markup and some reconditioning of a vehicle. Using it as a primary justification for an individual sale price means the gentleman either doesn’t know or is trying to pull wool over buyer’s head.
Never use NADA to purchase a car--they are, without fail, always higher than any other price guide. You use NADA to sell a car.
It'ss the old saying..." Use the book that has the numbers you like the best"
The books are all over the board but the only ones the banks care about are KBB and NADA. Back east they use a Black Book but I've neve seen one. As far as Edmunds, TMV....well.....if you like the numbers use them to your best advantage. The banks/lenders wont know what you are talking about.
Whilst lunching with the GF and her mother, some fine upstanding young man/woman defiled the Jags near pristine exterior. Might have been two incidents, a very strange dent in the driver side rear door, possibly a door slam or shopping cart. Paint isn't cracked, but a raised "scar" in the steel in the middle of the concave area of dent. More noticeable, and maybe more egregious, the lovely mesh grill now has a mangled mesh hole in the drivers side portion. As well as cracked frame. Either someone intentionally kicked it in, a trailer hitch, or very corner of a bumper hit? No paint left in either damage area. Needless to say, no note left, no cameras in the parking lot.
I'll drop by the local Jag dealer, see how much for a new grille. May just live with it. As Jags are known to hold their value so strongly, I'm afraid these cosmetic imperfections my really hurt at trade/sale time!
I'm know how that feels. Went through it when a jacked-up pickup truck took out the right front fender of Mrs. j's Subie 2 years ago in a kids hockey arena parking lot.
If your insurance is like mine, it will cost you your deductible (mine is $500) but it will be a not-at-fault claim and your rates will not go up.
Ok, this is the second parking lot thing for the guys in here. Who wants to make it 3 and finish the bad luck for us guys.
Let us know how the claim goes.

Thanks, I did stop by the local police to register the event. I'll check with my insurance, but I have a $1k deductible, so I may live with it... And, die a little each day that I see the missing teeth and scarred flank!
Uhoh. I wouldn't have done that. It may show up on carfax now. I'd much rather eat the cost and avoid the extra depreciation.
Shoulda been lunching with you! Didn't really think about that, a bit distraught (and I know it's not a huge deal. Coulda been much worse, taken out a headlight or worse...). It's a 4+ year old Jag, depreciation is its middle name! Still, 50 months unscathed, I guess it was due.
I for one, don't care what shows up on Car Fax. A lot of buyers (most) won't even look at Car Fax and if you have photos available you can put their minds at ease that the damage was minimal.
A Dent Wizard ***might*** be able to work that dent out...maybe not because it looks kinked at the bottom.
Who ever did that damage KNOWS that they did it! JERKS!
I thought you were going to say she tried to get you to go to an Amway meeting!
I've heard from old friends out of the blue for that reason!
I had that happen to me 20 years ago - with my boss! Unbelievable.
She asked me one day at work if I was interested in a business opportunity her and a friend had, no mention of what it was. Could they come by my place one evening to discuss. I wouldn't regret it, etc etc. I figured it was property or whatever given her background so I agreed. When they showed as arranged a few days later it turned out that the friend was pitching Amway. I politely listened to the sales pitch given that my boss was part of it and when it ended told them I would let her know once I had a chance to think it over. Now, there was zero chance of me agreeing but I needed some time to figure out how to say no without my boss using it against me. I finally did and there didn't seem to be much fallout subsequently, though she was transferred out not long after. What terrible judgement on her part though.
Don't feel bad. I think a lot of us have been tricked into attending an Amway meeting at least once!

Never Scamway but a few other multilevel crapazoids.
The one that really pissed me off was the one that tried to pass itself off as an actual job interview. They actually had a help wanted ad in a major newspaper looking for accountants. Went to the "interview" only to be given a MLM sales pitch for water purifiers. Or at least the very beginning of a sales pitch as I walked out as soon as I figured out what it was.

I have a car story of sorts, not one of our dishwasher or fridge stories. Really kind of interesting. But you tell me. WARNING: long post about to begin.
Let me explain a little before the interesting part.
I went to two of my Grandsons local hockey tournament games today. The first was Grandson #3 (Son #2's son) at 10 this morning. They lost and are now eliminated. Don't want to talk about that anymore. The parking lot at this arena has some pretty skinny parking spots (that's why we always take Mrs. j's Subie and not my Genny) and is surely why Mrs. j's Subie got wacked 2 years ago like I just mentioned in my post above.
At tournament time it is mighty tuff to find a parking spot but I got lucky with the first game because a game had just finished and I found a spot right away. The second game Grandson #4 (little goalie belonging to Son #1) was at 1:30 so Mrs. j wanted to go get some groceries rather than sitting around waiting. Nice guy jmonroe agrees. I knew I couldn't be as lucky finding a spot for the second game and I was right. Drove around the building and just about when I was about to give up I see someone backing out. As I'm pulling in I realize I am between 2 pickups. I damn sure didn't like that idea but there was nothing else available. As I'm walking to the arena (I had already dropped of Mrs. j before my drive around), I see a parking spot about 4 spots down with cars on both sides, no trucks. I think it just became available as I was pulling into my spot. I look around and don't see any cars coming so I quickly jump in the car and move it into this safer spot. That was a relief. Now as I'm again walking to the arena, I see another parking spot about 5 spots down. I'm not moving her car again and even if I wanted to I now hear a car racing down this aisle. The car is moving way too fast for this parking lot but I figured they saw a spot open and they wanted it. The car didn't have to speed because the aisle is one way anyhow but it was really moving and I could tell it couldn't pull into that spot so I thought that car was leaving not coming. Wrong, the car screeches to a stop past the spot and the front bumper really dipped down. Even with all of the windows closed on this smallish Jeep I can now hear the radio blasting some rap music and the woman immediately throws the car into reverse and is backing up almost as fast as she was going forward. BAM, she backs right into the car that was about a car length behind her. She jumps out of her car screaming at the driver that she just ran into. Here is some of that conversation:
As I said the woman (30 ish) was screaming.
Woman: WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU. DIDN'T YOU SEE THAT I WANTED THAT PARKING SPOT?
GUY: Lady, all I saw was you backing up into me.
Woman: YOU OTTA WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING.
GUY: Mam, I think you should have been the one watching. I was stopped and you backed into me. Anytime you are backing up and the other car is stopped, you are the one at fault not me and your insurance company will be paying for this.
Woman: LIKE HELL, PROVE IT, I'M GOING TO TELL THEM YOU RAN INTO ME.
WOW, I now have to get into this.
Me (talking to the guy): I saw what happened and I'll be a witness for you.
Woman even more irate and even louder.
Woman: YOU STAY THE HELL OUT OF THIS. THIS IS NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.
Me (talking to the guy): Just get her info and I'll back you up on this.
Woman: I'M NOT GOING TO GIVE ANYBODY ANY INFO.
Me: Just get her license plate number and call the cops. I'll stick around.
He didn't have to call the cops. About 4 cars back (a line of about 10 cars has formed by now) a guy approaches and asks what's going on.
Woman: WHY THE HELL DO YOU CARE?
The guy reaches into his coat and pulls out his ID. He's an off duty cop from and adjoining community coming to his kids hockey. What are the chances of that happening?
Woman (no longer screaming): Do you have jurisdiction for this parking lot?
Cop: I have enough authority to make sure information is exchanged during an accident. If you want, I can get the local police here to make sure you do the right thing. So, how do you want me to proceed?
Woman: OK, let me get my purse.
The guy was driving an Escape and their bumpers matched pretty well so as best as I could see there was only bumper damage. But the guys bumper was a little worse off. A piece was hanging down pretty low (maybe 8 inches from the ground) and the cop went to his car and got some duct tape because he said if the guy drove out on the highway he could be pulled over because of that.
As we were walking in, the guy, the cop and me, the cop said, "for his sake I hope you don't back out of being his witness. Because he won't have a leg to stand on without it. When that happens the insurance companies will each pay for their insured and both parties will have rate increases".
I am not going to back out of this.
So, I'm pretty sure I know what you guys would have done given the same situation, right ?
BTW, Grandson #4's team won 2-1 with his team scoring the winning goal with 4 seconds left. So, I get to go back to this same arena tomorrow at noon and look for another skinny parking spot.

Good, do the right thing. I am pretty sure we would all do the same.
OK I have a parking lot story.
My car is getting new shoes today so with pretty decent weather I woke up the bike a little early to run a few errands. I go to this place where the parking lot is rather small but there is a spot right near the entrance that is empty so I made a beeline for it and parked. Well there was this woman in a Prius that pulled into the lot behind me and started to yell at me, it went sort of like this:
Woman: You cant park there.
Me: (I just look around confused, pretty much my normal self)
Woman: See the sign? Fuel efficient vehicles only. You cant park there.
Sure enough the sign did say "fuel efficient vehicles only.
Me: I get over 65 MPG how much does that gas guzzler get?
Oh, you should have seen the look on her face. She continued her triad as I walked into where I was going., She parked further away and I saw her talking to someone inside and I think she may have been complaining about it.
That outragous discrimination on the part of the business, bias on the basis of gas milage is nearly as bad as "whites only" drinking fountains. Has environmentalism become the new racism?
Let me know if the store is a chain, I'll be sure to never shop there.
BTW, how does one decide what constitutes fuel efficient? Was there a mpg cutoff on the sign?

I don't think I would have bought the C250 if the Carfax wasn't very good. If I am laying out $25000 for a "previously owned" vehicle, I want some reassurance it wasn't in a major accident.
Having said that, I don't think a ding in the door or a few bars knocked out of the grill would be a problem, if they were repaired.
I suspect they rusted out in your area 30 years ago or more - these cars were not exactly rust-resistant, and they suffered in harsh climates. I remember meeting an older British guy who said he had one in the early 70s, and on the harsh roads there, it was already dissolving. The survivors now are in gentle climates or have been garaged and maintained with care. As you probably know, the pacific northwest is like a cache of odd older cars.

That irks me too. Does my diesel E-class qualify? It is more efficient than its gasoline equivalent. How about my old car? It is more efficient than the average car of its age.
Was it her?
There are numerous Prius driver-themed videos on youtube, not all are insane, but there's a relationship between smoke and fire.

Well, I guess that was poorly worded. Actually I DO care but not as much as some people do. Some buyers care obviously and that is why I suggested taking before and after photos of the damage. It was so minor that most potential buyers would say "Oh, that wasn't a big deal". The same photos can be shown to a dealer and, yes, some stores would act like the car's value was diminished by half. Most cars that are more than a couple of years old have had "some" body work or touch up done. some will show up on a Car Fax and some won't. I just think that some people make too big a deal out of Car Faxes. Some MAJOR events somehow escape a Car Fax label so go figure?
Totally agree carfax is unreliable. I personally don't count on it to tell me the whole story, but I definitely deduct value when it does show an accident. Inspecting the car will tell me if it had an unreported accident.
I bought a car once that had a dirty carfax. One of those vague accident entries. I inquired about it and the dealer said just the bumpers had been resprayed. I inspected it and agreed. Bought the car. Guess what happened when I later traded it? Did that dealer care one iota it was just the bumpers? Of course not. Oh and I also learned that day that they also apparently care when a car has had more than 2 owners. Makes it seem like a problematic car. Lesson learned.

Yeh, what a great car. I really like the color coordinated wheel discs...a nice touch. Does anyone remember any other cars that had that....I think 79 Cutlass maybe?
The 77 Cutlass offered Rally II wheels with color matching. 1973 Torino also had it with wheel covers, but I can't find a single decent picture of one searching for images.

I don't know about 1979 but the 1976 Cutlass did. My father had this exact color car, purchased brand new in 1976 and kept for 6 years until the rear differential self-destructed.

I’m probably going to have my Edmunds membership revoked for saying this, but.....
I think the whole Handicapped Parking, Pregnant Parking, any special parking area for any group has really gone way too overboard. I know at Lowes and Home Depot, the closest 3 lanes of parking are restricted.
Attended The Cincinnati Home and Garden Show on Saturday. Was taking a break from walking around and sat on a bench. I don’t know if I look old, or just haggard, but there was a guy on and electric scooter who slowed and then stopped to chat with me. Bottom line, he said if I told my Dr my joints hurt, I could get one of the scooters (which he was selling) for nothing. He went on to say, nothing was wrong with him. He just got tired of walking around. He was able, but unwilling, to walk. So, he got a scooter.
I can’t count the amount of times I saw someone expend more energy loading and unloading an electric scooter from their vehicles parked in handicapped spots, than they would by just walking.
The vast majority of handicapped spaces are rarely filled. Let’s either do away with them, of become much more strict on their use. Same for scooters. I can’t remember how many times I’ve almost tripped over someone in a scooter who absolutely needed to get in front of me in a checkout line.
While we’re at it....I’m also happy to see the airlines cracking down on “service animals”. I can count the times in my lifetime I’ve seen someone who really needed a service animal (like the blind or nearly blind) actually on a plane.
OK....start shooting the arrows my way for my stance. I can take it.

JERKS!
Really? You don't care? Huh. That's interesting.
Even if buyers don't care, dealers sure as hell do and will take it out of your trade, so it matters if you trade rather than sell. As for my few private sales, all of them wanted the carfax.
I used to live with this every day!

I don't know about 1979 but the 1976 Cutlass did. My father had this exact color car, purchased brand new in 1976 and kept for 6 years until the rear differential self-destructed.
That style of Olds Rally wheel was introduced with the 1968 models and was sprayed an argent gray, which they called the SSII wheel. For the 1970 model year they sprayed them body-color yellow if you ordered a Rallye 350 package, and for the '71 model year they made them available with any body color paint, calling them the SSIII.
Ford used color-keyed wheel covers on a lot of '70s models. Our Maverick LDO had them:

28FF.....I couldn’t agree with you more. It just makes me scratch my head.
Arrows? No. A big fat loud agree? yes.
As for me I have a bad foot and bum knees and half the time I walk I am in some real pain. But i still walk and I'm gonna walk as long as I can.

I probably stuck my foot in my mouth a few months ago. I fly for work, a lot. One particular flight from Cincinnati to the San Francisco Bay Area was packed. As I’m getting to my seat, I see a lady with a small dog, trying to stuff it into what looked like a carry pouch. The dog was having none of it.
Between the barking, crying and BMs (dog’s), she finally got it settled. I use noise cancelling headphones, so not sure if the dog was as bad as when we were being seated, but every time I took the headphones off, the dog was voicing its displeasure.
Finally, we landed. I passed the lady as I was deplaning. She came out shortly after I did. Just curious....I asked her what sort of malady she had that required this little dog?
She said she gets anxious when she flies and the dog helped. I didn’t know how to reply. I did tell her I get anxious when I get a colonoscopy and wondered if a dog would help. She clearly didn’t get my sarcasm and answered...”I bet it would”.
I need to qualify these remarks. I have owned 3 dogs in my life....all Golden Retrievers (wonderful dogs). I’ve also had 3 cats, not sure how many fish, but a lot. I love animals is the point.
When it gets to this point? It’s a shame that common sense doesn’t prevail.
Handicapped parking permits are abused by family members and others who may have stolen them or gotten them with faux doctor's notes--at least in Ohio.
The police hand out tickets in our fair city for cars not displaying them, but there are no checks on whether those who parked the car should have the permit they hang on their mirror.
I recall one overdressed 50's something lady who parked her car at Walmart in a handicapped, hopped out handily, and proceeded to walk rapidly toward the Walmart door. She gave me a dirty look because I was watching her, attempting to note any sign of disability. She was wearing tall high heels and had no trouble. How did she get the mirror hanger?
Many other abusers who appear to have ones that aren't legitimate are typically overweight and lethargic until they see something inside the store they like and then their energy increases ten fold. They could use a good walk across the parking lot by Dr. Azol's disagnosis. In some cases I suspect the person with the need for the handicap card lets the young person keep it because they drive them occasionally to and fro shopping and/or doctor visits. Or the original holder has passed away or moved into a nursing home and the abuser retains the handicap parking permit.
My cure is more big government where State of Ohio requires proof of eligibility every two years. They seem to be passed out good for 5 or more years. And change the color of them every two years so the old ones can't be modified.
As for me I have a bad foot and bum knees and half the time I walk I am in some real pain. But i still walk and I'm gonna walk as long as I can.
I am similar. I have a knee that is so bad it needs replacement (wait-listed, welcome to Canada) which has led to back and hip problems because of favoring it. I have two bad feet which according to one podiatrist are among the worst he has seen and which in his opinion should have been surgically treated when I was an infant but which now it is too late to fix. I am also wait-listed for a heart valve replacement which greatly limits my ability to walk any distance. Many people have told me I should at least use a cane when I go out, but this is something I hate to do. I do not have a blue tag yet I suspect I am in worse shape than the majority of those I see that do.
I have long believed that those spaces are excessively mandated and should be limited to those with severe mobility issues requiring wheelchairs or prosthetics. I think that was how they originally were conceived. As for the "mommy" spots, hybrid-car spots, etc, just no. And equating a specially-trained guide dog for the blind with an emotional support cat or bird or whatever is absurd - saying that as someone who loves animals.
LOL. "Emotional support animal". It always happens. Starts as a well-intentioned policy to help people in true distress and gets picked up by hordes of self-absorbed and inconsiderate whining bozos, who never experienced a day of true trauma in their whole life. Because it's hard to legally distinguish between the impostors and people in real need (there will always be a doctor willing to write a prescription for anything), it all goes to hell in the hurry.

Banks might use KBB, but you'll rarely catch insurance companies suggesting payoffs based on NADA.
