Very concerning what’s going to happen to all these older cars because most of my generation couldn’t care less about them like I do I must be a rare breed I’m gonna have to buy a bunch of where houses and get these cars for next to nothing sad very concerning what the next 10 or 20 years I’m gonna bring all these cars just gonna run away somewhere very very concerned

Symbols for all the antique stuff I’m not really into that stuff but it should be preserved and there should be younger people getting into it preserving the antiques from the past with route would be old furniture old kitchen utensils or any household thing also very concerning and they want to get rid of all the statues from the past all the sudden to like history didn’t exist not good

This "collective wisdom of the elders" is shaping up to be a major crisis in the vintage car world, and especially in the vintage racing world. There are just no, or very few, young people with the knowledge or motivation to support some of these older vehicles. Possibly car clubs will take up some of the slack, but they can't possibly act as a substitute. And even car clubs for vintage stuff are drying up.

Same thing is happening to; antiques, crystal, silverware and lots of other stuff. We thought it was special, they think of it as junk.

Mr. S, are you advising us not to buy classic cars?
No, but I'd certainly advise anyone who buys something rather exotic or high-performance, with 6 Weber carbs on it or antique fuel injection, to give pause as to who you think is going to fix it or who is going to support you on the race track or drag strip.

Went to a wedding in St Louis over the weekend.
One nice thing was the brides family provided bus transportation to all the venues.
There was a (I think) amusing conversation between the Saturday driver and someone get on the bus just in front of me.
The bus driver was a cowboy, wore a cowboy hat and wore silver jewelry with turquoise stones.
Guy in front of me was about to step onto the bus, driver stops him had stops him and says 'Hang on let me fix your jacket, the break is wrong'.
    Guy says 'Are you sure'?'
Driver responds, 'This is not my first rodeo', while adjusting the jacket.
Guy says, 'Ok, I'm the manager for Brooks Brothers on 5th Avenue'.
Not sure if it was real or just a quick thinking reply.
The driver didn't say anything about my jacket. :)

Saw this ad from a local dealer. Don't know how this makes sense.

    https://albany.craigslist.org/cto/d/2012-ford-fusion/6552895260.html

Almost $17k for a 3 year lease on a 6 yo car? Couldn't you get a better deal on a new one? The money factor is 6%. Sounds like the dealer makes out the best. Leases for the car's full value then gets it back with less than 70k miles to sell as a low mile 9 yo car.

How many years has it been since the change to the current platform for the Edmunds Forum? 3? 2?

There have been minor burbles in operation but no major breakdowns like we used to have with the previous platform.

It's been a good 2 or 3 years of fairly reliable service.

$99 a week, almost $400 a month....and it is a salvaged car. I don't know about a new one with nothing down for $400 a month, but, it wouldn't be much more. The beauty of this one is the buy back is probably only about $5000....if it lasts that long.

I think the selling feature is you can buy even if you have lousy credit, and the $99 a week would attract the gullible.

And guess what - they're not needed, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on who you ask. Today's hone waffle grid is made so much cheaper that nobody would be rewiring the old one if/when it gives up the ghost. Small replacement parts can be ordered from couple online store and pages of schematics are available with Youtube videos for those who want to do it themselves. Just this weekend I was able to address my plugged freezer defrost drain on my refrigerator all thanks to series of great videos with clear instructions. I'm not particularly handy, somewhat clumsy to be honest, but being an engineer, I can follow instructions and diagrams if they're clear enough and don't require specialized tools. I bet the last whip manufacturer was the best one ever, same with typesetters for printing press or wood wheel makers.

@driver100 - I couldn’t agree with you more.  Especially as someone who works in a small business, I try and “shop small” or “shop independent” when I can.  There is an “outdoor sports shop” in a town about 15 minutes north of me.  Every person there is very knowledgeable.  We rented skis for the season for my 3 kids there this season.  Getting 3 kids fitted for skis could potentially be crazy, the people are calm, attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely sell you what you want/need.  I’m thinking of buying my wife new skis & boots for mother’s day.  I poked around asking them questions when I returned my kids seasonal rentals.  They told me to make sure she blocks off at least an hour to get ski boots properly fitted.

There is a local bike store chain that is expensive.  They charge a lot for maintenance items (tires, tubes...) but their service is fast and everyone there is into bikes.  I don’t even waste my time buying things from Bike Nashbar or one of those other sites.

Probably a lot of people don't know what "Salvage" means. I guess they are required by law to put that in the ad if it is a car dealership. It is quietly put in a box where they hope no one notices or knows what it means. There are probably 10X as many personal ads where they don't tell you it was 'salvaged".

Actually, it looked to be in mint condition in the ads. They can sure fix those cars up to look pretty good.

I don't know anything about skiing, but I do know about bicycles and I could not agree more.

I buy my grandkids new bikes every year, or every two years, at a local (non-chain) bicycle shop. Not cheap, but they also take trade-ins of their old bikes making it cost not much more than getting inferior bikes from a discount store. They have never charged for small maintenance items like brake pads or adjustments (which are rare).

Not sure if anyone here recalls, but about a year and a half ago I bought an electric bike. It’s really been fun. I can go about 35-40 miles on it without pedaling at all, at about 25 MPH, on a single charge. Probably go a little bit further if the terrain is flat. Go a lot further if I end up pedaling a bit, (which is what I usually do).

Anyway, I was working on it this weekend, getting the tires up to the correct pressure, oiling the chain, etc. Most of my riding is going to and from the public parks, and riding the trails in the parks, once there.

I was thinking what a cool idea if I could record these rides? That got me to looking at the “activity cameras” out there on the market like Go Pro. Didn’t realize that there are so many companies making these things.

Anyone with any experience with them? Any recommendations?

I think if one has a house full of heavy old furniture and carnival glass, or other things trendy 30-40 years ago, it might be better to sell now than later. Young people today seldom want it. They will collect or have already started collecting their own stuff, reflective of what they see as stylish or cool.

Same thing for old cars. Ordinary 40s-50s cars are not going to appreciate. However, well-preserved cars from the late 70s to maybe early 90s might not lose their shirt, think pristine original 85 Celica rather than rodded 54 Chevy. Time moves on.

On the pro side, if one likes a normal postwar era car or certain collectibles, it is a good time to buy, as prices are lower than in the past. Buy what you like, everything isn't an investment.
