Not quite RIP Sears yet, but it's likely it will share fate of Toys 'R Us and Radio Shack. Management is equally inept and problems equally big. I just can't see how people would buy anything there worth more than 50 bucks, which means there is no path to recovery even after closing 150 stores. It's unlikely creditors will let them go for much longer past the Xmas, if at all. Sad, but also part of life and healthy economy. Weak players, those who refuse to recognize new trends and can't adjust, have to go away. The employees' suffering is an unfortunate part of the necessary process.
How the mighty have fallen. Once Sears was the worlds largest retailer, at one time they even sold houses and cars. Now it's down to this:

I checked online around here and they seem to be going for around 5 to 6 grand off of MSRP.

Snake....I only found out that Cincinnati had a local Maserati dealership when I saw their TV commercials a few months ago. Up until then, I thought you had to go somewhere else to buy one.

Still, don’t see too many of them on the street around here. Maybe I’ve seen 3 of them in the last year.

I’m starting to see TESLAs everywhere around here now.

    I think we need a new topic....CBDA.

Car Buying Dreamers Anonymous........you have to state what car you are hoping to buy in over at least one year from now.

    @abacomike ...well put!

@driver100 ......A friend of mine was amazed when I told him I haven’t bought a car in nearly 17 months. That said, I’m always on the lookout. If I am enamored with a car, I’ll do research on pricing, value, etc for about 48 hours. After that, I put the checkbook in the back pocket and I’m a “right now” buyer.

I don’t consider it healthy to lust and agonize over any vehicle. Odds are, whatever car it is you want today, will be gone tomorrow, next week and certainly next month. So why even speculate about buying and making yourself crazy...for a Sentra no less, or the one before that, the Yaris, or the one before that, a Scion?

That said, I do have a wish list of my own....

    -‘69 Mustang Shelby GT500 convertible
-Maserati Ghibli (I know. I’m flirting with the unreliability craziness that comes with those cars, but damn, they are sexy)
    -Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

Any of those cars would cause me to dip into long term investments, so probably unlikely. But, given my mood matched to availability, you never know!

As it stands, I likely won’t be in the market again until the Acura TLX S-Type comes out.
Well the Shelby GT500 would be about half the price of the Ghibli, especially if you took an automatic.

Porsche 911 Cabs are a dime a dozen in a 996 so $25K should do it.
Since I’m way off on what I thought these cars would go for, what do you peg the value of something like this, Shifty?

there are at least 2 Maserati dealers within an hour of me and at least two more in the Chicago metro area. The one closest to me is a new dealership that does Maserati and Fiat and maybe something else. The other one near me is a long established dealer that deals in Bentleys, lamborghinis and other high end luxury cars.

I usually see a couple Maseratis a month.

Well presuming no funny business on the numbers or condition (judging from photos, should be pretty nice), and presuming that the bidders aren't stupid or drunk, I'd say it'll settle in around $100K.

Was up at the Boca Raton Mall walking today and noticed that they have several interesting vehicles on display.

One is a Karma - in a very pale blue color. There is no way I could fit into that front driver's seat - and if I was, by some miracle, able to get into that driver's seat I'd never be able to get out! :D:p

The other car I noticed was a bright red Spyder roadster with a beautiful saddle interior. Those Spyders have been very popular for many, many years. This one was priced at $32,000++. If I remember to take some photos of those cars on Friday, I'll post them.

Going up to West Palm Beach on Wednesday morning to the dealership where I got my S450. One of the managers promised me a full detail for the car when it go to one year old. So I called and sure enough, he remembered. They are going to give me a loaner for 3-4 hours while they do the detail work so since my Dad's ashes are preserved in the South Florida National Cemetery about 15 miles southwest of the dealership, it would be an ideal time to visit his remains and say a few prayers.

I recall some fun Ghibli lease deals from a screamer print ad/internet dealer in Idaho last year, virtual sign and drive for under $600/month, but 5K mile/year limit. As I seldom see a Maserati on a road with a speed limit over 40, maybe they are all used in the city anyway. Seems to be a car you buy for the engine/powertrain, and the other things are free and sometimes of varying quality - maybe similar to a Tesla. Those cars (Ghibli and coupe especially) seem to attract a very specific demographic in these parts. I see one at least every other day.

    20MM after tax?

Keep maybe half to live off the interest
Make arrangements so my immediate family won't have to worry about some things - buy houses and set up funds
    Donate to charity/scholarships
"Retire" and set up some kind of hobby business that might not always run in the black, but will keep me busy
Probably split my time between this part of the world and parts of western and central Europe

Well today the wife and I took our annual pilgrimage to an apple orchard/pumpkin patch way out in the country. It's a nice little drive down back country roads with very little traffic. The one thing about this place is they make their own wine from their orchards apples so we tend to get several bottles of different types of apple wine.

Now to keep this auto related the route has a relatively straight stretch with only a few minor hills that's just shy of 8 miles long with no stops. So just for giggles I had the cruise control set for 55 and once it was doing that I reset the average MPG on the trip computer. so at a steady 55 MPH the computer was measuring 47.2 MPG. But once we hit stop and go traffic that dropped like a rock.

Nice to hear that there is still some agriculture nearby! It seems like every time I go through that area I have to draw a larger radius around Chicago to avoid the urban sprawl.

And, after you related your fuel economy, I took a look at your sig.... whatever happened to your CTS-V?

$20,000,000 in the lottery? After tax that amount?

I'd invest in a house for my son and his new wife to have their house in a good location and start a vet clinic for her to run if that's what she wants. She's currently in a group of 3 as far as I can tell. The rest would go into land and the stock market and a solid bond mix.
The land would be in an area likely to develop in 5 to 25 years so it would become a paying investment as parts were sold off for the benefit of my son and his heirs.

I'd keep at least half to just sit in the bank so I could live off the interest. Pay off all current debt. I'm not one to donate to large organized charities. Too much waste. Many many friends and family would benefit in addition to local charitable groups, mostly animal shelters and group homes.

No way I'm continuing to work. Hobbies where maybe I make some money, yes, but not "work." And we'd travel A LOT!

As for cars, I'd have the money to try to keep up with breld.

I would set up a fund to pay for college for both of my granddaughters. Donate to animal shelters and animal rescue groups, most definitely. Wounded Warriors project.

I would move, buy a new house, just to get some additional parking space for all of the cars I would be buying.

My fictional $20 mil would probably result in a couple of places for me, one here on the ocean and one someplace warm. A few new toys. Take care of the immediate family, brothers and sister. A lot to charities that are meaningful to me, probably over a period of time.

Interesting issue about where to invest it to generate returns to live on. Would you trust the markets not to implode at some point and wipe out your new prosperous lifestyle? Might make for some worrisome nights tossing and turning.

I've come to realize that unless I bought that lottery ticket in a state that allows you to remain anonymous, I have no urge to win the lottery. Winning that kind of money publicly brings a whole lot of hassle and attention that, IMO, isn't worth it.

Very exciting game Sunday Night was spoiled when my Chiefs lost to the Pats 43 to 40. Not really. I still loved the game, it was a great one.

$20,000,000. win. I would build a small vault, convert all the winnings to gold coins and sit in the vault all day like 'ol Scrooge McDuck used to do and run it thru my fingers and laugh and giggle !

Actually just buy 10 year Treasury Bonds. Interest rate of .035 would generate about $700,000. a year which I could squeeze by on. Save the principle for kids and grandkids and dole out as much of the $700,000. each year to friends and family as needed.

20 million win would translate into about 7 million cash, or less. The win is cut in half if one elects to take it as a lump sum, rather than an annuity, then of course taxes. Now, 7 million is still a lot, but not quite 20. There are life changing wins and not life changing. 7 million for me is just above the life changing, but not dramatically. If done properly, I would probably not need to work, but my actual lifestyle would not be much different than now. I think I'd keep my job, buy myself a nicer car and probably move to a house in a better place than current - or better, a nice downtown condo. Would give some to my family, but not that much, just enough so they don't have to worry. I think I may give a million to some cause, as somebody put it, one that does not get enough recognition in the media, because it's not "sexy" enough. Perhaps I'd split it to couple of causes, e.g. one domestic (something related to people with some kind of disabilities), one international (something related to making every day life better in rural Africa, or Asia impacting many people, e.g. clean water, sewer, electricity). Research alone of an honest organization would take a while, so I would probably not contribute in first year. I would not give a dime to a university, or hospital. Universities swim in money and spend it mostly on stupid things, American hospitals are most dishonest and opaque organizations under the Sun that happen to do a lot of good, but have no shame in pulling prices taken completely out of their a**s to those who they think can pay. If it's OK to accept payments from insured patients (directly or through insurance) that are 1/20 of that "bill" it means the amount is complete fraud.

I would probably take an extended round-the-world trip, for a few months, then I'd go back to work.
Leftover, about 3-4 million, would land in some dividend/interest paying investment that's not too exotic.

If the win netted lump sum 100 million (after all taxes), the plan may be quite different. That's a massively life altering situation. I think an installment of 10 million (gross or net, doesn't matter) a year (100 million net is about $300M+ "win") means one blow all the money in the first year, it will keep coming for 20 years, so you have a chance to get it right next one or one after.

If I won, I would actually take the annuity so I did not have to figure out what to do with that much money at one time. Also makes sense, as approaching "can I retire yet?" age, it serves nicely as a quite large pension well into the 70's. Just need to save a chunk of the annual payout, for when the day comes that the payments run out.

If you wait a long time until you come forward with the acceptance, there would be less interest in your winning. I'd like it where an attorney can accept for you.

I have to agree about the Wounded Warriors charity. Where some many charities are for the benefit of some people running them, not necessarily where they state the help is going. In fact, that type of operation had become and industry the last decade or so.

Going up to West Palm Beach on Wednesday morning to the dealership where I got my S450. One of the managers promised me a full detail for the car when it go to one year old. So I called and sure enough, he remembered. They are going to give me a loaner for 3-4 hours while they do the detail work so since my
Ooooh. Oh. Mikes going into the swamp. I smell a new car?
Jmonroe, make an appointment with an ENT doctor - your sense of smell is acutely faltering!   :D

I'm the one that thinks we've heard that before. And that we could be seeing another punch here in the car forum.

    I think we need a new topic....CBDA.

Car Buying Dreamers Anonymous........you have to state what car you are hoping to buy in over at least one year from now.

    @abacomike ...well put!

Thanks....I thought the GT500 would be well into 6 figures. Same for the 911.

I might start doing some lookey-lou.
    --------------------------------------------------------------
The 67-68 GT500 are worth more. Shelby had little to do with this car as time went on. It was all Ford's production. Values are very cyclical with this car. It's seen some big dips.

You should be able to pick up even a 997 Porsche Cabriolet for $35K--$50K.

Oh, did you mean a new-ish Ghibli, like 2013 on up. Oh, man, I wouldn't do that.

One thing about exotic Italian automakers---they have consistently failed to make a decent sedan for some reason.
If he wanted a Maserati that bad he could buy a slightly used (read beaten) one from Enterptrise. I could even get him my $1000 employee discount. B)

In the last 2 weeks I have been getting 20-25 spam emails a day with “amazon” listed someplace in the URL address.  This is a bombardment of electronic messages orchestrated by amazon releasing my email address to thousands of companies.  That’s criminal!

Since I’m way off on what I thought these cars would go for, what do you peg the value of something like this, Shifty?

Is it matching numbers? I understand that can boost value considerably. Me, I wouldn't care since I would own it to drive, not as an investment.

I’m starting to see TESLAs everywhere around here now.

there are at least 2 Maserati dealers within an hour of me and at least two more in the Chicago metro area. The one closest to me is a new dealership that does Maserati and Fiat and maybe something else. The other one near me is a long established dealer that deals in Bentleys, lamborghinis and other high end luxury cars.

I usually see a couple Maseratis a month.

We have one in Albany. The store where we picked up two the other day was in a fairly rundown section and looked pretty low rent.

@abacomike, not so sure it’s Amazon releasing your number as it’s others posing as Amazon to get your attention. Let’s face it, so many of us deal with Amazon that listing Amazon somewhere gets our attention. Is the URL listed as Amazon.com or is the word Amazon occuring after the backslash?

My fictional $20 mil would probably result in a couple of places for me, one here on the ocean and one someplace warm. A few new toys. Take care of the immediate family, brothers and sister. A lot to charities that are meaningful to me, probably over a period of time. Interesting issue about where to invest it to generate returns to live on. Would you trust the markets not to implode at some point and wipe out your new prosperous lifestyle? Might make for some worrisome nights tossing and turning.
With that amount of money I would put it in an ultra conservative fund where the principal is not at risk. Even with a very small interest rate amortized over say 40 or 45 years and keeping only half of it it should yield close to 20 grand a month.

Most likely nothing to do with Amazon, Mike. Don’t take those things at face value. It’s spam computers guessing or mining your email address and generating fake Amazon messages to fool you into thinking it’s related to them. They seem to have evaded spam filters that are often effective enough to wisk them away before you’d eve see it.

Missed that - my apologies to jmonroe!  My eyes must be getting really bad.  Apologies to you, too, imid.  You guys just don’t realize I am at least $20,000 buried in this lease.  I have 2 more years in this car.

Besides, I love this car!  :o:'(

You are right, carnaught, it might be that they use the word amazon in the “unsubscribe” URL.  But every one of the spam emails uses the “amazon” word in the unsubscribe URL.
