We once had neighbors who were enormous people. I imagine each one of hem topped 300 easily. Their car was a late 70s Civic. They were around for a year and the Civic survived it.

Going to another VW store is a great idea and will have to go to their sister store in Ft. Lauderdale since they are the only ones near I think. Will do a search and try to find another VW store in South Florida and go from there. When I get the survey, I will write that they should've taken me out in another similar vehicle on the same roads and see if the same problem existed and see where that goes. I can only assume that they aren't willing to mile up another Golf with the same tire/wheel package just to be sure here but that's probably the one definitive test to find out. But let's say the other one was very smooth, I then would expect them to do the swap but that would cost them even more $, something they are not prepared to do. But I will write that once I get the survey and see if they respond!

Me too. Just like with car dealerships (to keep it relevant,) I'm ok with Edmunds making a profit by selling advertising, but I think they went overboard with the amount of ads. It's very distracting and they're not implemented gracefully.

There's a freebie program (they ask for a donation) called Ad Block that indeed makes the ads go away.

Hate to do this because I know how unpopular appliance discussion is around here. But, I trust all of the opinions here.

Went to Sears last night. As has been widely reported, a sad shell of its former self. Prices weren't competitive either. Kenmore looks to be made by LG these days, too. I'm crossing them off the list.

Watch for a sale on the Bosch starte type model, should be around $500 or less. It is quiet, it does a fantastic job, the layout pattern is great. We bought one back home and liked it so much we got one for Florida when the one here broke down. Get it at HH Gregg or Lowes....when it is on sale.

Don't respond to the survey until you take the car to another dealer. If the other dealer can correct the problem then you can really go after them!

What a con job. I tried getting a free easy 3 step appraisal for the 2013 Passat - I was curious to see what it would be worth.
    - I went on the Toyota dealers website, went to "what is your car worth".
    - On the top it says Black Book Value so I guess it is linked there.
    - Put in the info they needed, it had 4400 miles, but it won't accept under 5000. I changed it to 5K
    - Then when I pressed "next" I go to live chat.
    - So, I backed out of that and then they wanted my name, email address, phone number etc.

What a scam. Lots of pop ups with discounts of all kinds too...probably more scams.

Wife and a couple of posters in the other group agreed with me about driving another vehicle there with the same wheels/tires on the same roads to see if there is a difference. If not, so be it but if there is a difference and it rides smoothly, they need to throw that set on my vehicle and let me be. Called my salesmen but he said he can't help me here but...gave me the general managers name and said shoot him a letter about the whole situation, make that suggestion, and see what he says. Hopefully he'll want to help a new customer and will do it...really can't hurt now can it!

GG, when we remodeled we needed a new dishwasher (it just adds up!). I believe we got a Kitchenaid. Higher end model.

we had very little choice, because we were going with panel ready, and only a few brands offered that, and only on top end model.

the KA has been fine. works perfectly, no problems, and super quiet. cost was reasonable too, compared to the other options.

Sandy, easy enough to drive one. just go to a different store, and take a test drive! Bring the kids car to throw them off the scent.

one issue I see is if you want to swap, and can convince them, they won't put on TDI wheels. But who knows.

rotating front to back can also help isolate the problem to a particular tire (or pair). If you rotate and nothing changes, also points to something different.

Or, if it shakes at 85, just drive 95.

have you set your driver preferences to turn on the heated seat when using remote start in the cold? I did, but I have no had it actually work yet. Salesperson called yesterday to check up on me and I asked him the question. He called me back today to tell me the techs tell him that it will only come on when the ambient temp inside the car is below 35, and there is no indication on the dash that it is on. hmmm... I can't really attest to the ambient temp inside the car being that cold.

Don't know for sure but on my GM vehicle that has heated seats and menu setting for remote start its either auto on for warmers or last setting (how it was when turned off), either way the light does NOT come on when remote started. Also unless it is a long run (time wise) on remote start the heat won't be instantly felt as the cushion need the weight of an a z zz to squash it and get close to heat coils, much quicker warmth then starting cold, but not instant,

at the suggestion of the salesperson, I left the caddy outside last night in the single-digit temps. Remote started it this morn and went out 6 minutes later. The seats were still ice cold. Oh well. I didn't know about the feature before I bought the car, so whatever. Would have been a nice-to-have. You may be right, ray, that it just doesn't work without the leather being pushed against the coils. Gotta wonder then why it would even be a feature if it won't work. I will say that the oddest damned thing about the car is that it doesn't have an auto fan setting for the climate control. I don't know of any other vehicle with auto climate control but only manual fan setting.

Q....if you go into the settings menu in CUE, I think there's a setting for "auto on" for the seat warmers, as Ray points out. I don't let mine warm up enough to really get the seats hot....maybe 2-3 minutes max. But, it does take the extreme chill off the seats.

Dishwashers....as this group is want to do, I researched the heck out of them last night. Seems GE sold their entire appliance division to Electrolux (German?, Swedish? Something else?). That's going to cause a bunch of people in Louisville, KY a lot of consternation, as that's where GE's entire appliance division is located.

    BTW, Electrolux also owns Frigidaire.

Anyway, in the past, those I spoke to who had Electrolux anything weren't real pleased with their purchases. So, scratch GE.

Bosch seems to be highly rated. German company but appliances are made in SC and TN. But, looking at the specs, they're about a 1/4" too tall to fit under my counter. Scratch Bosch.

Samsung...that's what I have now. It literally started falling apart in just a few short years. Nothing major, mind you....just a bunch of little things....wheels that are on the racks, clips that hold the racks on track were poorly engineered and failed repeatedly, little noises began emanating from the dishwasher sounding an awful lot like bad bearings somewhere in the innards of the thing. In short, while the little bits and pieces that failed weren't expensive, and most I could replace myself, the rest was troublesome. Scratch Samsung.

Then, there are the U.S. brands...Amana, Whirlpool, Maytag, Kitchenaid, Jenn-Air (in that order for their entry level to their top level. These brands are all owned by Whirlpool. I think they're at least designed in OH, and are probably made here, too (just north of Dayton, OH). Kitchenaid is highly rated by Consumer Reports. These guys aren't really all that good at rating cars. But, they can seriously and reliably use and rate some appliances.

Already talked about Sears. Kenmore I believe is made by LG. I remember when they made their own "stuff", then GE made them, now LG. They're kind of a mish-mash. They do crazy stuff with delivery fees (pay up front, then get a rebate, which I hate....if you're offering free delivery, make it free). At least on line, their prices are out of line, too.

Then you have the Viking, Thermador, Sub Zero type appliances. Hard to instal, expensive to fix. Scratch them.

Miele, Fisher Paykel...I know these brands were sort of hot items the last time I looked at appliances 10 or so years ago. Seems they've fallen off somewhat as only the specialty appliance stores have them, now. Not so certain they offer anything better than above. Plus, there's always the possibility that they won't be anywhere nearly as reliable as the ones above, either. Certainly more expensive to fix.

So, with all that said. good ratings, made/designed here, Kitchenaid is at the top of the list of what will fit the bill. Off to shop.

The Bosch spec can't be right. Counters are a standard height. There is no variation. Unless you have all custom cabinetry, which I seriously doubt. Also, dishwashers all have adjustable feet on the bottom to compensate for those who may have flooring running through their dishwasher space vs those who don't.

Have no clue if the tires are the same on both vehicles, will have to look. And since we did the deal with the TDI alloys included, think they're obligated to give me the same ones if there is a rim issue, they just can't change out the style because they feel like it...we made the deal based on what is on the vehicle now and i wouldn't settle for anything less. Besides, I didn't like the alloys on the standard SE model in the first place and the first thing we had to get straight was the swap would have to take place or I was leaving. It might not be a big deal to most, but I love the look of my Golf with the nicer TDI wheels and they agreed...case closed!
But first things first, I will write the letter after I drive the car to work tomorrow. Maybe whatever they did yesterday helped, just don't know right now but I will find out. I continue to be optimistic still!!!

GG, after 7 years we bought all new kitchen appliances last year. Wife wanted everything to match so we wient with Jenn-Air for everything. We have had only Bosch dishwashers for about 10 years and they (2) had been very good and very quiet, so I was a little worried about switching to J A. It was been a year now and the J A dishwasher has been great and we like it better than Bosch...and it is quieter. I would highly rec J A.

    You would think.

Measured my cabinets (not custom, but from a higher end cabinetry store, if that matters).

The opening is a 1/4" smaller than I can fit with the Bosch. I need the minimum instal height to be 33 1/2". Bosch is 33 7/8".

The models the wife wants ends up being $150 less for Bosch. So, I was all about going that direction. But, the Kitchenaid and LG are the ones with the 33 1/2" minimum height that I need. LG washer and dryer have been great. Not sure about the dishwashers reliability. So, the LG is running 2nd.

Houdini...for some unknown reason, there aren't a whole lot of outlets for Jenn-Air around here. I'm sure if I looked harder, I could find them. But, I'm going to the usual suspects....Best Buy, Lowes, Home Depot, HHGregg, a couple of family owned places. Jenn-Air isn't at any of them.

The bulk of our appliances are Kenmore/Whirlpool Elite but most are 5+ years old. They've all worked well. When the oven went out on our 16 year old GE stove 2 weeks before Thanksgiving we wound up with a Samsung convection unit that so far has been great.

I'd have considered Sears/Kenmore but we've had so many issues with their delivery process that I wasn't going to even give them a shot this time around. Plus, we're Best Buy Elite at the moment (due to buying an expensive Samsung TV in 2013) and getting the stove there meant a lot more back in reward points.

So, stove sales stories. As noted we went to Best Buy to look at a stove that was in their ad for about $600. Pretty basic unit. Looking around the wife decides she wants the 5th burner, convection oven, oversized/higher BTU main burner, etc. So now we're looking at units $1200-1900. Didn't like the LG and the domestic names seemed lacking as well. We came down to two Samsungs; differences were trivial but the wife made her choice and it was on sale. $1700 stove for $1500. In stock. Done. A couple of days later it was delivered & installed with no fuss; no muss. Exactly how I'd want a delivery experience to be (unlike with Sears).

A couple of weeks later I was browsing the weekly Best Buy ad & noticed the digital camera we'd bought a month earlier was on sale for less than we paid. OK, we're BB Elite so we get a longer price match period; cool. I can go to the store and get back $20. It got me thinking and I checked online to see if the stove was on a better sale. Yep; $400 cheaper than we paid. That wasn't in the print ad; price noted online only. So off I went & got both the camera & stove price-matched down. Ending with a $350 camera for $280 and a $1700 stove for $1100.

The salesman I worked with was polite & helpful and knew the products. When we got there I told him "sell me a stove" and he made sure it happened. When I price-matched I talked to the same guy & he appeared to be genuinely happy for us to get the savings. At this point I've nothing but nice things to say about how they handled the transaction.

A few weeks later we're out Christmas shopping the weekend before the holiday when a friend calls me & says his stove was leaking gas. I gave him our stove's model # and he found that from most stores, including Best Buy, it was on national backorder with delivery dates ETAed for February. He found one semi-local dealer who had it in stock & bought it essentially sight unseen as that was the only way to get it before Christmas (it was delivered xmas eve).

Our dishwasher is from around 2007 and is a Kenmore - rebadged Whirlpool Elite. Very quiet; we can watch TV in the room next to the kitchen without having to raise the volume (there's only a half-wall separateing the rooms). If they have current models of the same quality I'd have no problem buying another.

if you are measuring 33.5, then my guess is you are measuring to the top of your flooring, which is what? tile? Do you know if the tile runs under your dishwasher? I've never heard of a dishwasher not fitting. I spent time designing kitchens in a past life, BTW.

We renovated the kitchen 5 years ago. We have a Kenmore Elite gas stove and an LG french door refrigerator and dishwasher,

The stove has been perfect. We now wish we had spent a couple hundred more the for dual fuel. The refrigerator again has been perfect. I've replaced the parts that connect the door springs twice and I have spares on hand now. I've also found that if you accidentally turn the vent inside the door upside down, it leaks,

As for Jenn-Air, they are a "showroom" brand only. You won't find it at the big box stores. It's Whirlpool's high end brand.

Here is their showroom locator: https://jennair.com/customer-care/dealer-locator

I had this exact issue - my Viking dishwasher burned up a few month ago and I replaced with GE Cafe series. The Viking was a "European" Spec as was about 1/8 inch narrower than the GE. Since we installed the cabinets around the Viking the new GE was too wide! I had to borrow a special saw to take an 8th of an inch out of the cabinet frame to get the GE dishwasher in place...

The Whirlpool/Kitchen Aid dishwasher would be my first choice. Maytag/JennAire is owned
by Whirlpool. I found shopping online often let me list the local stores that sell each
    brand.

Here the Lowes stores tend to run sales on the ones they stock. So I'd look for
the premium model at Lowes when they run their regular sale at 10% off of so.

IIRC GE small appliances is not owned by GE any more. Also GE and Home Depot
are tied together financially, so they have lots of GE products at Home Depot and often
have variations on the models shown on the website with added features on similar
    models at Home Depot.

    @fushigi‌ - good story.

Tell me more about the convection oven. The wife mentioned that she might like that feature in our next stove.

Basically, a convection oven adds a fan to the mix. The fan circulates the hot air which allows food to heat more evenly and faster v. a conventional gas or electric oven.

So the oven doesn't heat up any faster but baking times are going to be 15-25% faster depending on the item & size.

Also, conventional ovens typically do a poor job when more than one rack is in use. The air circulation of convection ovens improves multi-rack performance considerably. That said, you will still find the top rack will cook faster; it's just the differences are reduced.

The Samsung has a feature to convert cook times for conventional recipes to convection. Haven't used it yet.

Don't get a convection gas oven (don't get a gas oven period). I loved the JennAir that was in our Boise house so much I got a second one from the restore store. Rebuilt the original with the best parts from each (darn clock still died within a month). Wound up with a bunch of different cassettes and griddles. Model 310 iirc, from back in the day when JennAir was their own company. The convection oven in it worked good too.

Put a kit wood floor down in the kitchen of another house and intentionally left room to get the dishwasher out. When it died, it came out nicely. But the new one wouldn't fit. Had to use some persuation on the rear legs with a sledge to get it to fit. :D

Got news from my son that the last MRI he had last week shows that the malignant tumor has dissipated and cannot be seen on the MRI.  What a great Christmas gift!  He has one more radiation treatment this Friday and after that, just checkups - 1st checkup in 3 months then every six months after that.  He has a full-body MRI in 2 weeks to develop a base for future MRI's.  Hopefully his white blood cell count will return to normal eventually.

You have no idea what a relief it is to know that your son won't die of brain cancer.  They caught it early enough, it would appear, and had good doctors and oncological radiologists.  This proton radiation is only successful in eliminating malignant tumors of the brain in a fraction of the cases reported.  Thank you, Lord, for your blessings.

    Great news!

Thanks OF.  He has his last radiation treatment tomorrow afternoon.  Then he has a full body MRI Tuesday to set up a baseline for the future.  He also has blood tests scheduled.  Then, a follow-up in 3 months and then every 6 months if everything checks out.

Our store once sold a Del Sol to a VERY large woman. Shortly after the sale she brought it back saying
it leaked water in the rain. We couldn't find any leaks. After the 4th or 5th time she brought it back, she brought her "partner" in with her. Between the two of them they probably tipped the scales at over 600 pounds!

Her much tattooed partner got downright nasty and vulgar with the Service Manager! After speaking with Honda Corporate they were directed to the Owners Manual which stated there was a (I think) 400 pound weight limit for the front seats!

They let those two huge women drive the Del Sol through our car wash and sure enough, it DID leak!

The body actually flexed enough to cause a gap in the front seal where the top met the windshield!

My old 1985 F-150 was so rusty that if you put more than one person inside the cab flexed to the point where the doors wouldn't close. :(

Hate to do this because I know how unpopular appliance discussion is around here. But, I trust all of the opinions here.

Have a few year old Samsung dishwasher. Works fine, except the wheels to the wracks keep falling off, causing me to "lift" the bottom wrack into the dishwasher. Now, the brackets for the top rack have clips that "sheared" off the rack. So, now I'm stick with an expensive dishwasher that's functional with racks that are, at best, poorly designed, engineered which uses cheap and weak parts.

I have been patching it up....using zip ties to hold on the wheels and the top rack brackets. That only works for a week or two until the plastic zip ties slip off.

Out of warranty, the service guy wants $150 just to take a look at it. I've been searching for brackets and wheel assemblies, with little luck, at least not for my model. When talking to the service guy on the phone, he said Samsung makes good fridges and TVs. Dishwashers? Not so much. In short, there are known problems that Samsung doesn't care about.

Out of frustration, I'm kind of looking for a new dishwasher. So, I know you guys had this discussion awhile ago, but what say you? Which direction should I go? What brand, if any do you like and why?

Went to Sears last night. As has been widely reported, a sad shell of its former self. Prices weren't competitive either. Kenmore looks to be made by LG these days, too. I'm crossing them off the list.

May be late for this but why not just buy new racks?

Yes. Appear amongst the posts. Annoying. I make a mental note not to buy from any of them. Kind of like when you get email spam. I realize Edmunds has to make a buck but ticking off your customers isn't a good idea in dealerships or online.

at the suggestion of the salesperson, I left the caddy outside last night in the single-digit temps.

I know one. 1995 Lincoln Mark VIII. Ahead of it's time I guess :D

Well, that's Edmunds decision to intersperse the ads among the forum posts. And the advertisers are what keep Edmunds in business. So I wouldn't boycott the advertisers but would instead ask Edmunds to alter their advertising policy/site design.

I don't like the ads either but as I am currently employed by a media company that generates some revenue from online ads I'm trying to be more forgiving. The ads I can't stand are popups and popovers where you load a page and, before you can read anything, it is overlaid with an ad you have to intentionally dismiss before being able to read the page.

I don't mind the ads if it pays for the service. My wife complains about TV shows that aren't recorded, hates to watch the ads. I say, if it wasn't for the ads we wouldn't be able to watch the show (free of charge)..

NOW LITTLE INNOCENT HONDA GETS FOUND OUT!

Honda fined for failing to report injury, death complaints

WASHINGTON - In the largest civil penalty ever administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation, the agency is fining Honda Motors (HMC) $70 million for failing to notify the government of complaints that its vehicles caused deaths and injuries.

The Japanese automaker received more than 1,700 reports of problems related to its cars and trucks, but did not disclose them to the Transportation Department as required by law, according to the agency, which also said that Honda failed to report warranty claims.

Honda disclosed the reporting failure in November, admitting that company officials had waited three years after finding out about the reporting failure before making the disclosure to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

First try...about 6 parts places..some on line, some brick and mortar. None can get what I want (but they can get $350 replacement assemblies).

probably stupid drivers or natural causes.

if I got this right, they aren't fined for a defect. Just for not reporting the complaints.

I have not heard of nor seen any data or info on the perfect car.  All cars have problems at one time or another - some more than others.  There are way too many parts, wires, components and metallurgical defects that cause problems in cars.  Additionally, manufacturers depend on suppliers and subcontractors to supply parts, bolts, screws, etc., which often do not produce trouble-free component parts.

There are so many variables that can cause problems in cars.  Even though manufacturers want these all to be controllable variables, very frequently they are not due to the multitude of contractors and subcontractors involved in parts production.

No car manufacturer produces cars that are totally free of defects in the long-run.  At one time or another, they all suffer from gremlins.
