Private K-12 schools should generally score above public school because they can choose their students accepted. Of course you pay for that through their tuition and fees.

Privatization of all societal functions can be good, but also can be dangerous. It depends on the consequences of doing it.
It would be impractical if not impossible to privatize all societal functions. How do you privatize public works? How. does the company providing it make money? Or police services? Any public and many merit goods need to be provided by the state to be practical.
Well they are selling tool roads, privatizing prisons, red light camera operations, and Hollywood celebs already have their own Fire Departments apparently.

The claim is that private enterprise can always run something more efficiently than government, but I don't agree with that.
They really aren't selling toll roads, what they are doing is leasing them out which in reality is turning the day to day operations over to a private firm. The state still owns the road they for all intents and purposes have contracted out the operation on the road. The same with other so called privatizations.

    @graphicguy,
Since I levelled it, it has gone back to being quiet.
I think one of the rollers was just touching the floor causing a resonance.

Well...that’s good news. Mine was more of a groaning and whining and sputtering type of sound.

The only LG product I have ever purchased is my LG Microwave Oven - 1500 watts. It does a great job, but it is extremely noisy. I think it is the fan that is making all the noise. I believe I paid $169 for the microwave oven which is pretty average for one that has 1500 watts. Whenever I have to heat something, I read the estimated microwaving time from the packaging and have to subtract about 15% of the time because it is such a high wattage appliance. It does a great job. But I would be a "happier camper" if it wasn't so noisy.

Filled up both cars today, it was 15 degrees and windy. I did it because I didn't want to get stuck having to fill up over the next week as all it's going to do is get colder. According to the long range forecast over the next 10 days 7 will have overnight lows below 0 with 3 days having double digit numbers below zero. Wednesday they are forecasting a high of 16 below. :'(

Anyone else having the big chill heading their way?

Yep - my friends are coming to visit tonight and are bringing several cold six-packs of Becks Dark Beer.  :o:D
Becks dark beer should not be drunk cold, slightly chilled yes but not cold.

You drink it your way and i’ll drink it my way - that’s what makes the world go round.  :D

But, from the time I open a bottle to the time I finish the last swallow, it is probably only cool when halfway through the bottle.

Incidentally, I had lunch out the other day at an authentic German restaurant in Pompano Beach.  To accompany my wiener schnitzel and potato dumplings, I ordered a tall glass of dark German beer on tap that was, without any doubt, the best tasting beer I have ever had.  They had 12 different imported German beers on tap which I have never seen before.  They had no other beers other than German.  I was in heaven
    B)
You would think for $100000 your S class would have a draft beer tap.

No, those are the BMWs with the "beer tap" shifter. :sunglasses:

There is actually no room/space available to put a "beer tap" atop the transmission selector because in the Mercedes Benz, the gear selector is a "stem" on the right side of the steering wheel. I prefer the gear selector there because it leaves quite a bit of available space in the center for more storage in my console as well a lots more buttons and mouses and touch sensitive appliances.

I've decided to remain at home all day because of the miserable weather we are having here in South Florida. It has been raining last night and all day today along with clammy 60 degree temps. People down here do not know how to drive in rain or on wet streets. Can you imagine if you saw them struggling on snow covered or icy streets - suicidal, at the very least. This miserable weather is supposed to remain for at least another 2 days due to a stationary cold front hovering above us. We definitely need the rain, so I am not the least bit upset about the weather. But driving in this stuff down here is not one of the safer things I prefer being engaged in. At least it's better than having to be up north with those below zero temps. My daughter lives north of Chicago and said it is below zero and expected to stay that way for awhile. :o

    Mike,
We have an all LG kitchen, bought a package a few years ago.
The microwave is much noisier than the GE we had before that.
I even kept the box for a few years because I thought it was going to fail.

Speaking of failing, our smoke detectors are 20+ years old and one of them is no good.
Of course, that model is no longer made
They are all interconnected, so after my original research, I thought they all needed to be replaced to be compatible.
Found a replacement that has an adapter to existing wired connection.
It was only $20, so I bought one and put it in. Pretty easy once I put on the correct adapter(it came with 2 that were very similar).
If it seems to be behaving after a month or so,
I'll just replace the rest of them(7 more) with the same new model.

My faulty LG dishwasher is long gone and good riddance (Costco made them buy it back from me). After much and much deliberation, I bought Bosh 800 series (which is close to top of the line, but not quite, that one is Benchmark). It was expensive ($800 plus installation), but I love it. It works well and it's quiet, no issues with water temperature (has its own flow heater). The only thing I liked in LG were racks - those were really clever, you could lie flat all tines at the bottom and half at the top. Bosh is not even close in that department, but I make due with those racks.

I really wanted to buy from Costco, but they only offer Whirlpool, GE, but they really push LG (out) and Samsung (don't touch that one, either). Consumer Reports are really clear Bosch performs best in their tests by couple of lengths. GE would have been an OK fallback, perhaps. I really couldn't stand Whirlpool, as their racks look unchanged since 70s - very little innovation in convenience department, it seems. I also needed a new over-the-range microwave (my old one had a broken handle and the door frame with loose external glass). I got an inexpensive Whirlpool. Overall, it's nothing special, as I don't need a fancy one. But the door... All other brands, including their top expensive models have a noisy, clunky door latches, whereas Whirlpool's door closes softly.

So I went to my local specialized chain store (Famous Tate) and got both appliances from them. Their overall package (appliances, delivery, installations, rebates) came best in terms of price (or tied) and their salespeople actually know their merchandise. They also give a decent post-sale support, even if you didn't buy their extended warranty, something big boxes still need to learn (as others mentioned big box guys don't want to know you after the sale if you don't have their warranty). Not quite Costco level, but you can always call them and they'll make arrangements with the manufacturer or give you a phone number to the right repair people. So far love both the dishwasher and the microwave.

We have a Whirlpool dishwasher that we have had almost 2 years now. It is quiet and cleans great but I agree completely about the racks.

Thanks for the info about Famous Tates....we get their ads all the time and they have some good merchandise and fair prices. Usually feature one make, fridge, dishwasher, stove and over the range microwave for about $2200 - almost makes sense to get 4 at the same time.

Our Whirlpool fridge which works fine is about 18 years old. I sometimes wonder if it is better to replace it before it goes or wait until it goes. If I wait, food will spoil, could be a real problem if we are away for a few months, and, we would have to look for a fridge and then wait until they deliver a new one. What are the odds it will last another year, or two or three?

Our lower priced Bosch dishwasher here and at home work great and are quiet. I have heard too many bad stories about Samsung, and LG appliances to trust them - especially considering service or actually non existant service.

yeah, sounds like this year for the TLX, so I assume in the fall as a 2020. with ILX/MDX next year (MDX could really use an upgrade, I assume it will be an upsized RDX).

TLX should be comparable to the current model. What they do with the ILX though could be interesting. Hatch version maybe? Would also make sense to have a small CUV version of it (and these days, could be just that). something to compete with the QX3 or X1.

A lot of over the range microwaves are made by LG regardless of the brand on the machine. I believe GE, Frigidaire, possibly others in addition to the LG brand itself.

Famous Tate is part of a larger Brand Source association, which gives them bargaining power similar to that of big box stores, that's why their prices are competitive and still stay in business. One thing I heard about them is that not all stores are equal, unfortunately. My store in Brandon is really great, has been that way for years. I bought from them when I moved to my house 13 years ago (and back then nobody came close in pricing). It seems that store's culture is focused on helping customer to make a decision and the floor is quite large, letting you see large number of options. I heard not so favorable opinions about other locations; went to one or two and can confirm that the vibe was not the same, but it could just be a particular person. I guess it's all up to the store manager to create right type of environment. These guys work on commission, but you can still set it up into "dog eat dog" place, or "let's focus on the customers so they actually want to buy from us and financials will take care of themselves". You can see same many people in the store over the years, which is generally a positive indication.

Had an unusual event in my sleepy little city yesterday. I was coming home around 3:30PM after a reception for my former boss who is retiring this coming week. I was not far from home on the expressway that crosses the community I live in when suddenly both lanes of westbound traffic slowed and then came to a stop. Unusual for that time of day, I figured there must have been a crash. But as I crept forward I finally got to see what was up. There was a large SUV, maybe a Durango, pulled over onto the paved shoulder with two cars with hidden strobe takedown lights blocking its front and rear. Several people were tearing apart the rear cargo compartment of the SUV obviously looking for something, probably drugs. There were a number of people standing next to it, obviously some of the occupants and some plainclothes officers. What surprised me were the takedown vehicles. One was a Camry, the other an Altima. Who ever heard of an Altima cop car?

That type of stop with multiple police vehicles is fairly common here with vehicles having Texas and Arizona plates.
The usual catch is big drug hauls coming up from the US border.

I watched closely as the weather forecast showed the next Artic front to come out of Canada Tuesday or so. I think we're going to be on the very edge of the really cold part. But they showed freezing all the way down Florida. Chicago and You are in the "Great guns, it's cold" part along with International Falls MN.

Hopefully, that's the last of the really cold blasts for this winter. 12 weeks until the first outdoor car show here. Third week of April.

Really cute! What kind of dog is it?
Regarding labs, we adopted our lab mix at around 6 months old. While not as destructive as a small puppy, she would take a nibble out of a corner of every piece of wood furniture we owned. End tables, backs of rockers, chair legs — every single piece had one nibble. Not destroying it — but one bite out of a piece of furniture kinda ruins the value. Oh well. It’s only furniture and she’s been a great dog, still hanging in there at 14 1/2 years old.

I am going to call you on this, traffic offenses have always been civil offenses. The difference between "civil" and "criminal" is pretty much jail. Criminal offenses all have the possibility of jail time while civil offenses don't, it's just fines and/or forfeiture of privileges. The difference in the courts is mainly what the judge can do. It's not to deny you your rights. So I seriously doubt Kentucky is trying traffic citations in a criminal court.

You are dead wrong; in Kentucky a criminal offense that doesn't hold the possibility of jail time is called a violation The only difference from any other criminal offense is that defendants are not entitled to court appointed counsel. Aside from that, defendants charged with a violation are entitled to the same rights as someone charged with a misdemeanor or felony- including trial by jury. How do I know? Well, I presided over trials involving traffic citations on District Court criminal dockets from 1986 to 2018.

Trixie has been with us for 3 weeks now. She is also 3 1/2 months old. She has learned a lot and house training is coming along. She is really good....but, she has a huge amount of energy....I am getting too old for this.

Oh well. It’s only furniture and she’s been a great dog, still hanging in there at 14 1/2 years old.
lol about nibbling furniture. Trixie does that a bit....we did buy some apple spray and that seems to keep her away from it. We bought her all these fancy toys....but, what does she like the most.......a golf ball or an old shoe!

Labs are the dog of choice in our community in Florida, there are two who live nearby. 14 1/2 is a good age for a lab to be...hope she is around for many more.

Trixie is a Shorkie....Shiatsu and Yorkie. She is a handful but, she sure is lovable. Parents must have been an odd couple, father a 7 lb Shiatsu....mother 12 pound Yorkie.....Trixie has to be less than 15 pounds fully grown to come with us on a plane, and be in the cabin.

You shouldn't give a dog an old shoe. They can't tell the difference between an old one and a new one.

Well, its a Lincoln. So be the 2nd owner for about 30 cents on the dollar.

A friend of mine said the same thing but I suggested that most of them would be put in a garage for the next 20 years and never driven. There won’t be many coming up for sale.

Was thinking the exact same thing. Buy a one year old used model for a lot less. Not sure what these drive like, but for $100K+ there are a whole bunch of really good cars I could think of I’d rather have than this Lincoln.

Hmmmm...interesting comments on the TLX. Still have 19 months on the lease but it's sounding more and more like the new one will be on the market before then.
yeah, sounds like this year for the TLX, so I assume in the fall as a 2020. with ILX/MDX next year (MDX could really use an upgrade, I assume it will be an upsized RDX).

TLX should be comparable to the current model. What they do with the ILX though could be interesting. Hatch version maybe? Would also make sense to have a small CUV version of it (and these days, could be just that). something to compete with the QX3 or X1.
I was originally thinking Acura would stick with it’s 3 model year history before releasing a new version. Since the last redesign (a pretty hefty one) was 2018, I wasn’t expecting a new TLX until 2021. Sounds like it’s going to be brand new for the 2020 model year.

I may have to readjust my trade in plan. It does sound like the Type-S TLX won’t be out for the 2020 MY, though. Can’t wait to see/hear more.
