So apparently Elon thinks he can start sending out million robocars, many taxis next year. All of course without any legal framework, production capacity. Some blabla superchip and it's all done. If only I could sell my magic hands that way.

Looks like a software update for the forums got rolled out recently as there are new links at the top of the Bookmarks page. But the things that were broken in Firefox, anything that has a pulldown selection for the message composition box, are still broken. And if you use the back button from the bookmarks page after reading a board's messages, it still doesn't update the unread posts. :(

Nope, not an update, just a temporary glitch. :)

I looked at a '75 Monza back in HS (maybe early college?) and took it to the family mechanic for a check over. No issues, but it was the V8, and he told me not to bring it back if it needed plugs. That was the model where you had to jack the engine up out of the motor mounts to get to the rear plugs. And in those days, they were not 100K Iraium tipped ones!

and I think a little rocker rust even though it was only about 4 years old, but hey, it was the 70's.

sharp car though. Like an exotic back then. bright silver hatch, V8, 4 speed. Sharp. Not sure exactly why I did not buy it. Might have been just to much money.
I actually bought a used Monday in high school.

I almost got one in high school too but I decided to splurge and I got myself a Tuesday as people tend to dislike Mondays.

LOL! Sometimes I don’t catch what autocorrect does to my posts! That said, reminds me of a remnant of my college days....

When I go to replace the MB GLK 250 BT, (2.1 L TT, compact CUV, target 200,000 miles (11 years) to (17 years) 300,000 miles) current candidates are V6: Lexus RX 350, RX 350 H, Toyota Highlander, Highlander H, 4 cylinder T, Lexus NX 300, NX300 H. Since 2004 (Prius) Hybrids have been proven good to great, over 16 MY’s., albeit 20% better mpg over like gasoline models. Almost none (gasoline/hybrid) overcomes the gasoline like model cost differential.

I do not think a Tesla will be on that list, at that time.

Well I got a call from the dealer about the ragtop. Seems like they have to replace a couple of the motors and switches for the top. Quoted cost is about a grand. They also gave me a laundry list of things that need to be done. Most of those I knew about and are minor nuances but one or two things that should be taken care of if I want the car to get to 200k miles. Total for everything is a little over 3 grand. This is to much to put into this car.

I figure my options are the following:

    1. dont fix anything and keep the car for now. The amount I drive it I should get a year or two more out of it.

    2. drop about a grand or so to get the few major things done and maybe extend the cars usage by a year or two over option 1.

    3. Either one of the above options and get the top fixed too.

    4. Get everything fixed and hope for the best.

I am leaning towards option 1 and keeping an eye open for a decent low mileage used car to replace this car.

Overall I cannot complain to much, I bought it over 10 years ago as a one year old ex rental with 18k on the clock for $15k. I got my monies worth out of it and i will still be driving it some more.

If you’re handy, price out the parts for the top (Rock Auto, EBay or the like) and fix it yourself. Otherwise, just drive it.

Yes, in someways, the convertible top can be considered a cosmetic issue. That is especially true if it still is accomplishing it’s umbrella function.

So one real ? Who are the potential buyers in app a yrs’ time +?

A (reasonable, convertible fan) buyer would take that car for $’s estimates minus - that from the then current asking price/FMV.

If the car has like say a Toyota Land Cruiser following, prices might be higher.

I would get the top fixed. If they do that right, maybe consider fixing some of the other things.
That way you still have the other 2k to use for the next vehicle.
My goal is to put the top down when I put road insurance on the car and keep it down until it's time to put it away in the fall. Never had it quite work out 100%.

see, should have traded it in last month before the problem developed. That is the downside of holding on. It's like a stock, you have to sell your winners while they are ahead.

I think option 1 makes the most sense at this point.

It all depends on how much you value that hair blower. You didn't say what those major things are that need to be addressed. In the end I wouldn't dump too much money into a 10 year old car. As for discussing this with your wife, you gotta man up about this. :s

    It's over.... it's finally over! :'(

The deal is done. I bought the Mercury Milan this morning. The son is off driving it to his girlfriend's house now. Son seemed really impressed with how nice the car looked, and the features it had. I ran it thru a wash and wax before he came home from school. I cleaned the interior and engine compartment fairly well. Probably could use a good wax and buff, get some light scratches and scuff marks out.

No problem at the county clerks office. Clerk asked the seller what the.purchase price was. He gave her the correct amount. The vehicle was taxed using that amount. Now Snakie can't report me to the cops! I drove the seller home. He left about half a tank of gas in the car. Yippee! He also left some cleaning supplies,.a AAA emergency road kit, and an ice scraper and brush for me.

I'm probably gonna need a car for MYSELF in a year or two, so I'll take a short break (a week), then start hitting those Craigslist ads again. ;)

It's a little hard to render an informed opinion on that old convertible without more information, what repairs have been recommended, the cost of each of those repairs, etc.

Depending on what is wrong with it, I would probably either leave it alone and drive it until the wheels fall off, or just get rid of it now.

Alike?  Is that surprising?  Look at Mercedes, Lincoln, BMW, Lexus, Audi, to name a few.  They all look alike nowadays.  I still have difficulty telling the difference between a C and E Class Mercedes;  or between a GS350 and ES350 or LS500 Lexus; or between an A4, A5 or A6 Audi, etc.

But I do like the Toyota Avalon’s look.

I haven’t had the opportunity to post another “abacomike” tragedy situation in a very long time.  Well, it happened again!

I was food shopping this morning and an old lady was coming down an aisle not looking out for other shoppers and crashed right into me jamming my right arm between the front of her cart and the rear of my cart.  Normally, this would not be a catastrophe - but you forget this is sbacomike - tragedy and catastrophe are my two middle names.

Most of you know I take a blood thinner due to a DVT.  Well, the skin on my arm tore and I started bleeding like a sieve.  They called the paramedics because we couldn’t get the bleeding to stop.

They put a pressure bandage on my arm and I went to the emergency room at the local hospital.  The doctor put 7 stitches in my arm, bandaged my arm, and I took a cab back to the parking lot to get my car.  The stitches come out in 7 days.

If not for the blood thinners I take, it would not have been as serious.   :'(

There's a radio show I listen to (via podcast) from CA that has a segment called "Florida or anywhere else." The upshot is that the host reads out the headline and the call-in contestant gets to guess whether the story is from FL or anywhere else on earth. At least half of them are from Florida.

    Go figure.

I feel for you, Mike. My skin has gotten so much thinner as I age. I work on a car, rebuild a fence, play with my dogs -- bingo, the skin is scratched or broken and bleeds like a stuck pig. The one a day aspirin also contributes to that. But luckily for me, I can stop any bleeding with pressure for a few minutes. At least so far, knock on wood, cross fingers, ...

Do you still get use out of it as a drop top? If so just have them disconnect the motor mechanism and make it a manual drop top. Fix any safety related items and forget the rest. What’s the KBB and Edmunds values? You can get a 2000 model with 50% less mileage for a few thousand and a Mitsu V6 that might go 200,000.

I forget where you’re located but here’s one from my area.

@snakeweasel is in Chicago, as I recall. That Sebring convertible sounds a little too good to be true, at least for the asking price of $2k.

I’m hoping that a lot of people do NOT have to take “an aspirin a day or an aspirin substitute (Tylenol, etc.) a day”. IF one does it, it might not be a bad idea to consult one’s doctor, as either &/or both can adversely effect the liver, up to & including unforeseen death. The practical aspect are blood tests @ intervals.
