If that doesn’t work, buy a new one and start from scratch! You may also be able to take the hard drive out and bring it to a pro to try and pull files off. If anything on there is important enough to be worth it.

Stick, Imid + suydam, thanks for the info.
Stick: On the way to pickleball Mrs D says there is nothing she needs from the current desktop....that is good. She can set up banking and all the other stuff on a new one.

Imid The monitor idea would be good to use at home....I have some old ones that would have worked. Since we don't have anything of value on that PC., a monitor would be a temporary solution...might as well buy a new one.

Suydam: We could take it in but in my experience it will cost at least $150 and maybe it will work for awhile....rather put that money into a new one.

    Thanks guys.

We checked Amazon, BB and Costco for HP Desktop, all in one computers. Lowest price on BB and Costco was $650, and went up rapidly from there.

On amazon on my computer the lowest price HP all in one was $449. On Mrs D's phone, she could get the same computer - hers is attached to our PRIME account, she got one for $369. It is white, 21.5 size screen, though 4 GBs we only use it for basic emailing. My IT guy says it should be good for what we use it for.

Thanks again for your comments, all help is appreciated to come up with a solution. Of course JMonroe would need about 32 GBs of power :D
BTW JM....what movie did you see or do you remember?

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake occuried near the Eastern Caribbean islands of Dominica, Martinique, St Lucia and others in close proximity to the tremor.

According to the University of the West Indies (UWI ) Seismic Research Unit, the quake took place around 3.54 am at a depth of 10km.

Thank God there were no loss of life or property damage. I didn't feel a thing as I slept right through it.

@driver100, we get South Florida TV down here. That monster computer can help in cleaning that monstrous sewage problem. Fortunately we don't have smell-a-vision to inhale that pungent stink.

The movie was HORRIBLE. Jamongi or something like that. I tried to ignore it but it was pretty loud. What little sleep I got Mrs. j didn't even notice because she couldn't hear me snoring. At least my ribs aren't sore today (she usually elbows me when she hears me snoring).

FWIW, you're not the only one with computer problems. Mine has been acting up for a while. DIL #1 got it going last Saturday (lost all my settings). I'm thinking about getting a new one before they get lost again. I got this high powered thingy at tax time in April 2013. According to DIL #1 and her husband, it's OLD and should have been replaced at least 2 years ago. Then on top of that my email on AOL started acting up with Internet Explorer so I downloaded Google Chrome. It works now but Mrs. j is confused because the Google page looks different. This is not going to end well. I can see that already.

You mean Jumanji? It's another junk remake, as is pretty much anything coming out to the large screen these days. Plus, it was directed to a 10 year old kid, how did you end up watching it? I don't go to movies anymore. If there is anything worth watching, I'll buy it on demand a few months later, but nothing is really worth me going to theaters, whatever remains is not much. Basically regurgitating same stuff over and over, either as a remake, or plain plagiarism. The only original content that's worth watching in last ten years has been all television, first on cable channels (HBO, AMC, FX), now the streaming (Amazon, Netflix). Network broadcast has a few OK shows left, but the originality is also shrinking rapidly. It seems it's the same show for 20 years, either literally, or same stuff with different title. I'm a free market guy, but it can be frustrating to watch how slowly it takes care of large companies feeding us junk product because majority of people like zombies accept anything that comes off the assembly line, conditioned by advertising and "focus group" research, or worse, what seems to be tastes of an entertainment executive or his/her spouse.

@dino001, Son #1 asked us if we wanted to go to a movie then to a Chinese restaurant for dinner. When asked, I told Mrs. j that we should just go to dinner but she said our grandkids would like us to go to the movie too. I told her the movie was probably bad for the reasons you stated and she said I was an old stick-in-the-mud. Well I showed her, so we went. Turns out, she thought it was pretty pathetic too. The dinner was good though.

I'm always right about this stuff and she knows it but I wasn't going to tell her that for obvious reasons. :'(

FWIW, I think even a 10 year old would be insulted with the content of that movie.

We go to movies about 6 times a year....and we are selective. It has to be a real type of story, no super hero stuff, it should have pretty good reviews (at least not really bad ones). Knives Out could be slow for some, but it is a clever who done it with brilliant acting and very clever dialogue.

We liked Netflix but now they have to mass produce material to keep up with demand. Most thrillers you can pretty well know the story line before the movie starts. Although the Prime list may be smaller, and it isn't as easy to operate, they do have more gems in the lineup. We added Acorn and it is surprising that some countries like Australia, England, Spain are coming up with some very creative series.....may need CC though.

One other thought about movies....it isn't just the $10 each wasted, it is the 2 hours of my life I will never get back.....plus time to go and return, sit and wait through commercials....probably 3 1/2 hours, so it better be good!

I disagree, Jumanji is a bad movie at any age. The scary thing is when they turned on the lights when it was over I saw couples of all ages that weren't with kids. I couldn't help but think these doe-doe's or ones just like them will probably be in the booth next to me when I go to vote.

If somebody has an extra monitor that you can plug into a video connection on your all-in-one, I'd consider doing a wipe of the free area on the computer after taking off anything that stores you personal data. There are several programs that can do that including BleachBit, the ever famous program used by famous people, to clean areas on the hard drives.

Unfortunately, you are right. But you can’t say that when you want votes, you still have to tell voters (especially these voters) they’re awesome and wise, and main reason for prosperity. For many people, especially those in the voting booth, this country greatness is equivalent to their own awesomeness.

Star Wars? Really? So far first two parts of the current tryptic made Phantom Menace look in comparison as least like Lawrence of Arabia, so my expectations were very low.

One casualty, the garbage disposer. I'll have to call 'the guy' to fix it(looks in the mirror).

I don't know of anyone who actually fixed a dispossl unit. Un-jamming it yes but never fixing one. I'd suggest you don't get the puny 1/2 HP job @driver100 recommended, step up and get a 1 HP unit, you won't be sorry. Surely nothing less than a 3/4 HP unit. But that's only going half way. On second thought get the big boy. The last thing you want to be accused of is getting a wannabe garbage disposal.

    jmonroe
Garbage disposal Units usually last a long time....for the $100 cost you get your moneys worth. No use fixing one. But 1/2 horsepower is more than enough unless you are piling in chicken bones or huge portions of beef fat or something. If you scrape off most of the larger chunks of stuff and use the GDU wisely, it will be more than adequate.

If you live at JMonroes house you may want to get the turbocharged model. The guy is power hungry with a V8 and 3/4 hp GDU.
My disposal had to be replaced 3 weeks ago. I knew the bearings were shot about a month before it started leaking under the sink - but my warranty contractor won't replace the unit unless it stops working or begins to leak.

They put in an Insinkerator unit. Works fine now.

On top of that, the faucet in my guest bathroom which I use all the time started to crack. No leaking but I couldn't take the chance it would begin leaking. So I contacted a plumber to replace the unit with a Moen unit. It took them about an hour to replace the unit. The master plumber suggested that I seriously consider replacing my main shut off because it is 30 years old and showing signs of beginning to fail. The bill came to $275.00 (including the cost of the faucet) which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

I have to remember that this condo is 30 years old and things are beginning to fail. I just replace and repair things as they get bad or fail. I refuse to invest money into this place unless it is necessary. I figure the kids won't want to keep the unit so they are only going to sell the condo when I die. Besides, it is free and clear (no mortgage) and I would never get my investment back.

I've lived through several really bad quakes when I lived in Southern California. The Landers Quake was a 7.4. The Big Bear Quake was a 7.2. The Northridge Quake was a 6,9. The first two were only 25-30 miles from me (epicenter) - but the Northridge Quske threw me out of my bed at 4:30 AM and was 90 miles away. Felt like a freight train crashing through my house. Emptied the swimming pool.

I just got a card in the mail offering me $150 off at the Mercedes dealer if I get at least $300 worth of repairs.

What are the odds, I can get exactly $300 worth of work done, and come out paying only $150 for it.

It is an advertising program I am skeptical of......better to give 25% off or something. Why does someone getting $300 worth of work get the same savings as someone doing $1000 worth of work?

Don't ask us, ask the advertising dealer. OR, you could asked them, "what combination of services can I get for $300 plus a maximum of 10% more". More than likely that will be a check all fluids and top them off with factory authorized fluids and a tire rotation and top off with nitrogen. Try it and let us know how far off I am.

Actually, not a remake. More like a sequel. And then this latest is a sequel to the sequel. I would consider it Jumanji 3, personally. And it wasn't bad. My kids enjoyed it. My wife and I were mildly amused. #2 was definitely better, though.

Full transparency. I was complaining, well maybe just talking, that car shows had ended until April.

WRONG. There's a car show on the west side of metro Cincinnati on Saturday. Weather here had been low 60, upper 50s, and continues through Saturday, so there's a car show. It will be eclectic in what kinds of things show up based on how its advertised. I don't care much about pickups modified and cars with big engines so they can't even put the hood back on and customs.

So I may pass, unless I decide to go to Microcenter for some electronics shopping in north metro Cincy, and cruise on by the car show from there. But that's below 50% chance of happening.

I feel the same way. Between all of the superhero stuff and the incessant CGI-fests that most movies are these days I avoid most of it. A lot of the Amazon originals (except for Bosch) disappoint me too. The most recent movie I saw was Once Upon A Time in Hollywood which had its share of CGI I suppose but not done for its own sake the way most are these days. I enjoyed that movie for all of the great throwback scenes, and while it was long I didn’t mind.

I don’t get the whole Star Wars phenomenon at all. The first one in the ‘70s was rightly acclaimed for its groundbreaking special effects at the time but these days everybody can do that. But it has taken on a life of its own.

I just binged-watched three seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I liked it, they managed to make the characters both complex and cartoonish at the same time, which I think was quite interesting. “... Hollywood“ was mostly boring, but last fifteen minutes made up for it, the violence was hysterical, better then Kill Bill’s Yakuza sword carnage. Brad Pitt was as good as in “Burn after reading”, but DiCaprio was a bit off. I liked Last Tycoon and 3/4 seasons of The Man in the High Castle. Also recommend The Report, unless you consider everything other than Hannity fake news, then no, don’t watch it. Jack Ryan was good, both seasons. I loved first season of Goliath, second stopped caring mid second episode, can’t tell why. It happens - I’d binge watch a season or two of something and next one I find not caring what happens next. Fatigue, perhaps. Even best productions.

It’s outstanding. I have to hold myself back from watching more than 1 episode at a time. The head bad guy, Smith is like a [non-permissible content removed] version of Tony Soprano.
I was sold when Joe was stopped by a sheriff in Tennessee and the guy talked about the smell from the nearby crematories like it was just an inconvenience. Also the American [non-permissible content removed] girls terrorizing their teachers and threatening them with “reeducation camps” in the last season was a great touch. The whole series is an excellent treatise on how close we all are from accepting, following and rationalizing a totalitarian regime without asking any real questions. Finding myself rooting for the villain to defeat even bigger villains and preserve the peace was a strange feeling, too. The only thing I would do without there was the whole inter-universe travel.

And that the Sheriff was part of the Autobahn Patrol.

That scene gave me nightmares for weeks. To your point, it felt very very real.

We are 2 for 2 as far as good movies go over the past 2 weeks. Ford vs Ferrari & Star Wars - The Rise of Skywalker. Both highly enjoyable!

My son and I loved Ford vs. Ferrari; I remember that era quite well. We aren't too excited about Star Wars; we both think The Mandalorian is better than any of the recent SW films save Rogue One.

Totally with you on all counts, save Rogue One. Really didn’t like that one.

    Questions.

TV ads for Chevy are touting “employee pricing” for everyone. What does that mean exactly? Is it a percentage discount and if so does it have model restrictions (ie Corvette) ? Could you do better on your own?

Secondly, I saw a news story on the morning emotional manipulation show crying about the “shocking” misery of Californians stuck in the snow while driving through high passes. Is it really that bad or are they getting stuck because most people are driving on summer type tires out there?

As an aside, I got a late Christmas present at work yesterday when I got to drive a Maserati, a Camaro and a Ram turbo diesel back to back. All brand new.

I just binged-watched three seasons of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I liked it, they managed to make the characters both complex and cartoonish at the same time, which I think was quite interesting. “... Hollywood“ was mostly boring, but last fifteen minutes made up for it, the violence was hysterical, better then.

"Hollywood" is filled with small bits that would resonate with those who have some experience or knowledge of the industry back then. One example was the scene where Rick and Cliff are watching the episode of "The FBI" where he plays a bad guy. As a fan of that series, when that scene began to show the episode I immediately recognized it as the one where Burt Reynolds had played the bad guy. They had used CGI to substitute DiCaprio into the role but it looked totally realistic.

I tried getting into Mrs. Maisel but couldn't stick with it. It should have appealed to me but I found the characters to be over the top caricatures and it was too fast-paced, the way a lot of new stuff is these days. I think it lost me very early on when her husband left her for reasons that made very little sense.

Agreed. I'm still mid way through the 3rd season. They have made it seem uncomfortably real, but the whole inter-universal feels like it was just thrown in there.

So what are your driving impressions of a Maserati, Camaro and RAM? I had to really think what a Camaro looks like these days, then I remembered, the car that shouldn't be bought if you have claustrophobia.

I like the looks of the Maserati, but it looks pretty low to the ground, and not greatest visibility...but, those are my impressions from the outside only. Trucks! I went for a ride in my B-I-L's 10 year old Tacoma, I would never want a truck as my main ride........doesn't feel like fun at all, big and lumbering..........

The Maserati was pretty quick and had pretty good handling but it was a 4 door Ghibli and I assume the less powerful version, so it wasn’t exactly spectacular. Nice European exhaust note.

The visibility in Camaro is like riding in a tank but it has crisp handling. Probably better than my Mustang. I couldn’t see the Chevy as a daily driver for me because of the visibility.

As to the RAM I can see why people like diesels. Driving up and down Vermont mountains was a breeze with the massive torque of that engine. A truck that big really isn’t my cup of tea unless I was planning on hauling a house. For what it is I thought it was good.

I just wrote the last payment check for my Mustang! I own it free and clear now.

Now, I just have to figure out what to do with an extra $451 a month.

    Maybe I should buy a dish washer....or a garbage disposal. ;)
