My Japanese domestic market RAV4 is expected to arrive in the Caribbean on January 1 after a little over eight weeks and 8,000+ miles since ordering it. Funny thing, it comes with a built-in GPS but everything is in Japanese. Either I learn Japanese quickly or I will have to put a piece of duct tape over the screen. But more pragmatically, is it possible to switch the language function to English like you guys can in Canada or Mexico?
By the way, it still hasn't rained here in three weeks and daily temperatures range from 72 - 85 degrees; and believe or not, this is supposed to be the rainy season. Nothing wrong with that but perhaps that is too much of a good thing.
Well, if you didn't rub it in again about the weather, you could have gotten some help. :@

So why did you do it at the first place? Best case scenario, there is a language change function, but it is JDM vehicle made by a domestic company, so if is possible there is not one. If the OS is flashable, then it should be relatively easy to do, but I suspect it may not be as simple and involve either a full unit replacement, or at least some chips. You may also need to find some good indy garage. I doubt dealer would touch it, but there are some Fast and Furious crowd may do it, or know who would
Garbage disposal is installed. A couple of bumps along the way, had to have my wife hold the upper collar so I could put the snap ring on. Took less than a minute. The other issue was that I had to buy a new pipe to connect the non disposer sink to the drain, about $6. Previous one was too short with the new unit. So far, no leaks.
That collar thing is the hardest part. You would think if they can get a man to the moon they could design a collar so that one person could fit it on - easily.
I've done it by myself a few times. However, there is no law that says you can't use the old one, they are universal between manufacturers. Do you really care that the name on the old one says Kenmore and the new disposal is an Insinkerator ?

Bwia, even my 2014 C250 that doesn't have a back up camera (in case you didn't know) can give the temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit.....but, Japanese to English .....I have my doubts. Did you try youtube, there are some talented guys who can do all sorts of things.....some can even install a backup camera in a Mercedes.
I've seen Japanese market MBs with early nav systems (1999 era) that lacked other language options. Maybe Toyota is different, might depend on the age of the car.
Turns out my installation was not all blue skies and puppy dogs. After a coupe of hours, my wife noticed it was leaking. Looked like leaking from the sink gasket area. Don't blame me, you didn't ask. But does it really matter now? You just said your wife wouldn't want a mismatch of collar and disposal. The only thing I can say about that is, start working on her now for the next time. Look at it like this; maybe all is not lost for our other poster buddies in here. Live and learn.

See what I mean, that snap ring can be a real problem. Surely they could devise an easier way to hook that thing up. Is the collar the ring part in the sink, that is where the drain is? When we bought the place Mrs D had the stainless steel sink removed and a white sink put in, obviously with a white drain. Good news, our oldest has set a wedding date. 10/10/20 either in Margate Florida or Orlando. A Saturday night wedding at sundown once shabbat is over. A nondenominational one but we insisted on it starting once shabbas is over. Just don't feel it can be on a Saturday day. Sunday would be a better day since it is Columbus Day weekend but this is what they both want. Knew this day was coming but still, our oldest girl whom I'm extremely close with. @driver, you are so insightful. I checked YouTube as you suggested and there are several simple instructional videos to convert Japanese language GPS settings to English. What would Mrs. D do without you.
To all the others who contributed thanks for your input. Much appreciated. What I learned in my short research is to download a Google foreign language translator app for your smart phone. That way you can make easy work of Japanese and Chinese technical instructions.
I sometimes mention I am surprised by the number of drivers in Florida who crash into store windows or restaurants. Then I hear this story on the news this morning;
Florida leads the way when it comes to vehicles crashing into buildings
A rash of vehicle crashes into bay-area businesses is raising concerns and a volunteer organization that tracks statistics said it happens more in Florida than in most other states.
A volunteer organization that tracks statistics for storefront vehicle crashes said it happens a lot in Florida.
According to the Storefront Safety Council, Florida only accounts for 10% of all U.S. drivers, but accounts for 17% of all storefront vehicle crashed in America.
I was at a show last year with various store fixture vendors. Their was one vendor that was showing their new line of bollards that you put in front of your building to help protect the store front.
In my group there was a buyer from a major retailer that said their stores get driven into sometime several times a week!
At my previous employer we had a few driven into but only 3 or 4 times that I know of. The stores that are the most vulnerable are stores where you can pull up to the front. Our stores were largely in bigger centers where there was a travel lane in front of the store.

This is disconcerting to read.
The kids cooking studio we have has head in parking right in front of it. Someone mistakes the gas for the brake and we're in big trouble.
Probably doesn't help that there is a liquor store next door.
There should be a sign......Only people who are accident free should be allowed to use those parking spaces. I wonder how many of those are caused by someone putting the gear into Drive, instead of Reverse?
The guy who drove at full speed into the terminal at Bradenton airport was stopped, by a counter made of concrete, otherwise the person behind the counter would have been hit.
When I worked for the liquor board here we had a big mix of stores, some with pull-in parking out front, others without, but all of them were equipped with some pretty stout bollards out front, especially in front of the entranceways. We were a popular target for theft, everything from the casual petty shoplifter, to organized groups that stole stuff to order on behalf of certain people or unscrupulous licensees, to ones that thought a big caper after hours would net them a truckload of booze, which they would get by driving a stolen vehicle through the front wall (what could possibly go wrong?).
Between the bollards, reinforced walls adjacent to vehicle lanes, glass coated with a special anti-penetration film, and surveillance and alarm systems that were pretty sophisticated, we had a very low rate of loss.
I was thinking after, even just very high and heavy cement blocks would probably stop most cars...at least tear out the oil pan or something before they got too far.
This happened yesterday at a shopping center 15 minutes from us. Thankfully the bank was closed. It's the second time in a year a car went through a storefront in that plaza. Last time it was a hair salon.

Are you serious? Do you really think that tearing out an oil pan is going to stop a car that is in motion? If you drain all the oil from a car in your driveway it will run for at least several minutes before it seizes. Believe it or not some people have actually done that, dealers too, although not intentionally and the car even got to the grocery store miles away with no oil. Go to U Tube and prove it to yourself. So, I'd much prefer something that stops the car, like reinforced concrete pillars than creating a slippery mess with oil all over the sidewalk.
Oh yeah, you did say, "or something", so maybe what I said is what you meant.

My sister-in-lawwho has MS gave up driving after her leg spasmed on the gas pedal and she took the corner off the bank she was visiting. I suspect that a lot of those accidents have a similar cause.

I actually knew that, but one day I did see a lady who went forward, probably didn't know there was a cement block in front of her car, she went up it and it came down on the oil pan......oil was leaking out and her car was stuck up on the block....couldn't move forward or back....but, that was from a standing start.
Either we are hearing about these stories more or they are happening more.....maybe as the boomers get older!
Oh, you might irk the sensitive with that last bit
My grandpa had an incident like that, with a rental car in Hawaii of all places. Foot "slipped", car hit a convenience store. Yes, he bought the optional insurance. I think he was in his 60s then, and was always an extraordinarily cautious driver, even when I was a little kid I could tell the difference between him and my parents more relaxed style. My mom is an early run boomer, in her 70s now, and her walking has slowed a lot more than her driving.
I doubt boomers will drive worse than their predecessors, but as there is such a horde of them, I am absolutely certain we will see more weird incidents, especially in retirement areas.

48000+ posts....twice as many as me! I don't think anyone should be overly sensitive...I am firmly a member of that group. Most of the boomers I know are probably better...meaning safer drivers than a lot of the young guys who just have to get to where they are going as fast as possible. But, when things go wrong boomers cause more than their fair share of bizarre incidences...usually the gas instead of the brakes.
Today we went to St Petes for dinner. No one goes the speed limit on I-75, which is 70, most are going 80 to 85, some faster. Lots of weaving in and out to get a few cars ahead....some go into the right lane then cut back into the left trying to get one or two cars ahead.
On the main road along St Petes Beach it is 2 lanes each way. I have to be in the left lane to turn into Spinners, a revolving restaurant. Twice cars that were following me closely saw a chance to go to the right and squeeze into the space in front of me, only to veer into a turning lane a little further ahead...I pass them on the right as they wait to turn, doing their fancy driving made absolutely no difference. They act like ignorant pigs and get no further.......WHY???????????
Place must not be very good: there's no one eating there.
I was always told that the truck stops and diners with vehicles and people there were the ones to stop out. I tried that out when I first drove to Charleston back in the 70s.
Revolving restaurant? I recall the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta long, long ago.

Back in the early '80's when we went to Disney World and Epcot, I remember a revolving restaurant at Epcot. I can't remerber the name but it was something like the Turning World. Almost like being on a very sloooow merry-go-round. My young son's thought that was cool. Food was blah but not cheap.

La Ronde in Edmonton was my local revolving restaurant when I lived there, and I visited it a number of times later on business trips from Vancouver (after I moved). It was good then, and apparently still is, based on the internet search I just performed. Nice views and good food -- hard to beat, especially on an expense account.
I actually knew that, but one day I did see a lady who went forward, probably didn't know there was a cement block in front of her car, she went up it and it came down on the oil pan......oil was leaking out and her car was stuck up on the block....couldn't move forward or back....but, that was from a standing start.

Back around 1985 my dad who was in his mid-60s at the time did exactly that. He didn't realize there was a cement parking curb in front of him and went to drive forward out of the space. It took out the oil pan on his newish Dodge Aries wagon but he quickly realized what had happened and had the car towed so no further damage ensued.

Reservations are recommended but not necessary on regular days. Lunch menu is in effect from 11 until 4 p.m., best to arrive by 3:30 or so, after 4 dinner pricing is in affect and it is much more expensive. The lunch prices are moderately higher than regular restaurants but the place is really special.....makes for a really special meal. The food is excellent too, which isn't always the case in revolving restaurants, as food is usually prepared on the 1st floor, and then comes up. Tripadvisor reviews are excellent.....it is hidden away a bit on the main strip but we have friends who love to meet there, and it is an exceptional experience.
If you go to John's Pass this is probably only about 10 to 15 minutes further South.
The last revolving restaurant I ate at was at Disney World in 1994. I promptly tossed my cookies due to motion sickness.
That’s odd as they usually turn so slowly that you can’t really notice. Maybe you were just eating your churro while riding the tea cups.
The center area stays, areas like the bar and welcome desk. The outer edge with the tables is the part that moves. If you stare at the tiles...some are moving and some are staying...that could cause you to get disoriented. I heard of people putting their purse or something on the ledge, which in some places doesn't move....and by the time they realize it their purse has gone half way around.
On this one the outer windows are stationary, and as you move you see signs with an arrow telling you how many miles to Cairo, Toronto, Vancouver, Mexico City etc. Interesting, because if you drive from Toronto, it would be 1500 miles, on their sign it is less than 1200....but, that is as the crow flies.

Pirelli P-Zero Run Flats - 245/40 R20 99Y XL is the exact tire size. Anyone have a suggestion on how to beat that price?

Go to Costco, if you still have the membership. Nobody beats their prices for like models after all is included. If you want runflats, check out Bridgestone Driveguards, if they have the size - that's my go-to tire now. I also had Pirelli runflats, don't remember which model exactly on mine. Driveguards are quieter and more durable in general. I think Costco also offers a Michelin tires, I'd check what they have for you, too. Costco always rotates $70-$100+ rebate for all four tires between Michelin and Bridgestone, usually in two or three month cycles.
That's right. I'd go with all-season touring tires rather than uhp summer, they usually have 450+ treadwear index with very little loss of peak traction.

I put the Z rated Pilot Sport A/S 3+ on the Club Sport; a 500 treadwear rating and more than enough grip for that car.

To all the others who contributed thanks for your input. Much appreciated. What I learned in my short research is to download a Google foreign language translator app for your smart phone. That way you can make easy work of Japanese and Chinese technical instructions.
Glad you found a solution.

It’s a dangerous phenomenon.

The kids cooking studio we have has head in parking right in front of it. Someone mistakes the gas for the brake and we're in big trouble.
Probably doesn't help that there is a liquor store next door.

The guy who drove at full speed into the terminal at Bradenton airport was stopped, by a counter made of concrete, otherwise the person behind the counter would have been hit.

Between the bollards, reinforced walls adjacent to vehicle lanes, glass coated with a special anti-penetration film, and surveillance and alarm systems that were pretty sophisticated, we had a very low rate of loss.

My sister-in-lawwho has MS gave up driving after her leg spasmed on the gas pedal and she took the corner off the bank she was visiting. I suspect that a lot of those accidents have a similar cause.

Either we are hearing about these stories more or they are happening more.....maybe as the boomers get older!

Oh, you might irk the sensitive with that last bit

I was always told that the truck stops and diners with vehicles and people there were the ones to stop out. I tried that out when I first drove to Charleston back in the 70s.
Revolving restaurant? I recall the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta long, long ago.

That’s odd as they usually turn so slowly that you can’t really notice. Maybe you were just eating your churro while riding the tea cups.
