The entire discussion reminds me of a recent cause celebre locally. The Feds up here back in March changed the longstanding guidelines for lead in drinking water. The standard used to be 10 something-or-others, and they changed that to 5. A few months later, one of the newspapers in league with one of the TV news operations did an expose where they somehow did some tests and trumpeted that the water in some schools was unsafe. Of course the water had not changed, just the standard. Naturally the local govt jumped in and said they would now supply bottled water to all schools until the whole mess could be fixed. Funnily enough I don't recall anyone asking if the bottled water itself was tested, but hey, it's govt policy via social media.

I don’t know how they did things in the past but most rentals I drive are pretty loaded up these days. They have some base trim cars but a lot of them are mid or upper trim levels.

I hear that they buy according to what they can sell the easiest down the line.

Beautiful! Buy or lease? I thought you had nixed the idea because of resale/reliability concerns. Edit: never mind, went to CCBA. I never thought you’d buy it. Was certain you’d lease.

$17k off sticker, that’s amazing. What's the deal, are they selling that poorly or did Kia price them too high out of the box? If in the future Kias gain the cache’ of say BMW you might have just pulled off the purchase of the decade.

Certainly a fast car. It will beat a Mustang GT off the line.

That’s funny to what lengths we go to scare ourselves. The standards are probably 5 parts per billion. Now the difference between 10 and 5 at that minute level are insignificant. In fact, it was only recently that were had the technology to measure amounts that small. People lived happily for centuries with no harm but because now we can measure these tiny amounts everybody goes nuts.

The car rental companies and the car makers learned....people don't want stripped down models. Car makers turn off possible customers, car rental companies have cars that no one wants.

That is an example of why I prefer a car that is easy to sell when I am ready to trade it in....much easier to trade in a car there is demand for.

Not the first time I’ve seen the grandma ploy on CL. I didn’t just fall off the turnip truck. I have actually bought cars from grandma in the past and let me tell you, you can’t let your guard down.

I was interested in how to approach buying a desirable (extreme low miles) car from a seller that thinks above dealer retail is a fair price.

to finish up a prior topic, had a new hot water heater installed this AM. Basically the same as the old one (50 gallon Bradford White). Old one was having trouble delivering hot water through a whole shower without having to keep turning up the temp control. That and the hot water out of the cold tap meant it was way more than time. No issues with the install (so far!). Just need to really try it out to make sure they have the temp turned up high enough.

Oh, so you also like hot water and don't want to run out of it when you take a shower.

When Son #1 bought faucets for the flip house they had the feature that allowed the installer to set the temp to something less than full hot. Since we were the installers we set all the facets to allow for full hot with the reasoning that the person using the facet could chose for themselves how hot or cold they wanted the water. Afterall people have done it like that for eons so why should we decide how hot they wanted their shower regardless of how high the temp setting was at the water heater. FWIW, we installed a new water heater too to insure nice hot showers. Fast forward to when the house was sold and the buyer had a home nit picker inspector do an inspection. The guy said he liked what he saw and the inspection passed with flying colors but he had to write up a few things just because he had to make the buyer feel they got their moneys worth with inspection. He actually said that. A few days layer my Son gets a copy of the inspection report and guess what? He said the water was too hot so the water heater temp should be turned down. The water heater setting was set to a little above mid way but my Son turned it down so as to comply with the nit-picker. I guess that guy wasn't like us and liked cool showers.

We keep our water heater at the 120 degree maximum. That is code but also protects us in case the little one accidentally gets confused with the faucets.

We keep our water heater at the 120 degree maximum. That is code but also protects us in case the little one accidentally gets confused with the faucets.

I leafed through the user guide that came with it to see how it worked. They said to initially set it to the "hot" line on the dial. I think that was 120. there were I think 4 more lines then the top was "very hot". I bumped it up to half way between hot and very hot, and the hot water did a fine impression of a sauna (way too hot to touch) so I put it back just a smidge above the hot default. If we like it will leave it there. If still hotter than needed I can push it back.

I just hope we can now use the cold water in our master bathroom sink normally! It cost enough that it better be like heaven.

I think it is OK on that car. Just outrun everyone.

I believe that will set a crazy number for a sales price. Sadly it will probably never see the road again.

I usually pay a few grand for my old cars but I suspect that one will go for a bit more.

It’s kind of a shame that cars like that get put away and never driven. Then again, how could you take that kind of investment out on the road?

I had my hot water heater replaced a couple of months ago. It was 13 years old and didn’t leak or cause problems but I figured it was on borrowed time (it was, the bottom proved to be quite rusty). $900 worth of peace of mind.

Getting back to our favourite topic of dishwashers, today I was in a local building supply store (Rona, for the Canadians in the audience) that was one of several locations being closed. Everything was at least 40% off, some things even more reduced. They had a pallet on the floor with Bosch dishwashers still in their shipping packaging that were originally over $900 supposedly, now offered for just over $500. Was sorely tempted to snag one.

You answered your own question. It's not a car, it's an investment.

And per your countryman and our poster buddy, you would be buying another one in 2 years.

Our hot water heater is probably due for replacement but, it still comes out hot after awhile. Would rather not have to do it at all, so we'll see. Only the two of us here 90% of the time now, so...we'll just have to see. Have spent a lot on home improvements these past couple of years so looking to build up our reserves going forward a bit. Seems like I have bills spaced every other month right now and the monthly increase in my federal pension was just shy of $40/month, not a whole lot to make a killing off of!

Yeh but $500 for 2 years is only $250 a year for a Bosch....handles like a German luxury car.

Usually when a hot water heater fails it isn’t because it fails to make hot water. It’s because it springs a leak and floods the surrounding area. That is an expensive PITA.

if you know you will need one within a couple years anyway, I would buy it and just stash in storage.

The down side to that is the warranty clock starts clicking the day you buy it. I'd rather bite the bullet and replace it a year too early than a day too late. So far that philosophy has not let me down.

Thanks for the memories Tom Brady. So sad it had to end that way. Either your luck ran out or your skills diminished to the point of irrelevancy.

Either way, it's time to hang up your helmet and retire number 12. :'(

brady will be back I bet. He still has enough in the tank. Can't blame that loss all on him. And if you want to pin it on the QB, better give him credit for somehow taking that team to 12-4 in the first place.

As much as it locks them into a place they would probably be better off vacating, I also think Brady will return. The problem with the team wasn't Brady, it was the lack of viable options for him to throw to.

But I still couldn't stop thinking during that game how it could have been Jimmy G. out there instead if they had bitten the bullet a few years ago and moved on. They seem woefully unprepared for that eventuality.

I actually saw a white KIA Stinger, just like GGs this morning. It is the second one I saw, the first one was black and it was about 4 months ago. I get the impression, they aren't selling really fast. It sure does look nice on the road. The one I saw today was being driven very conservatively by a middle age lady....whatever that might mean.
