@Driver100, I would have bet your life on it, but you wouldn't have had anything to worry about.

Do you think he would have been at ease if I bet his life on that or anything for that matter? :o

was that the oil change story?

Ouch, that's hitting below the belt.

That is such an old story I've almost forgotten about it but he likes to remind me of it as often as he can. Let him alone, he enjoys it, I'm still waaay ahead compared to taking it to The Guy for everything especially things like a windshield washer fluid bin. I'm sure anyone who has done repairs and maintenance on their cars knows that when you do that for about 60 years, would agree I'm not exaggerating about being on the plus side of savings.

    jmonroe
    It may be an old story but the story is one of our classics in the C&C Hall of Fame. We all tend to rationalize a bit...which is probably a good thing. My stupid repair is a pain, but, it could have been worse;

Did anyone else notice how he cut and pasted my quote? That seems like a cheap and lack of credibility way to respond if you ask me but he did get another all-important post count.

Why did you ignore my answer to your question about negotiating a repair quote? Mine was 25% did you get one like that?

    jmonroe
#1. I cut a chunk of your post to save everyone 3 minutes of their life. The meaningful part was still there.

#2. I ignored your 25% savings because I didn't want to disappoint you for your negotiating skills. A 25% savings for an overpriced repair that you negotiated $1000 off, and you still found the deal was not acceptable isn't winning the negotiation. If the repair cost $10000 and you negotiated 50% off, but didn't take the deal it isn't a deal. If a tree falls in the woods and no one hears it.............
I don't remember anyone in here asking you to edit any of my posts to save them reading time. I doubt you're as considerate as you profess to be, more like trying to twist things around to suit yourself.

As for getting a better price for that engine replacement, I did in fact get one. Just because I decided not to use it doesn't change the fact that I was offered one. The car was 7 years old and I was thinking of replacing it anyhow so when the engine blew and I'd still be out 3 grand, I decided not take the discount on the new engine just to sell the car anyway. I will admit I wasn't going to replace it at that time, probably would have waited till the Spring of 2012 rather than have to replace it in November of 2011. So, once again you tried to twist something around to suit your view of what happened. I haven't read where you said you got a better repair cost, from what was first given, so I take it you didn't. If I'm wrong now is your chance to correct me. You've been around here long enough to know if you don't ask you don't get. So why would bend over and grab your ankles on the first price that was given to you for that repair job.

    jmonroe
I am printing your post in its entirety, even though anyone who wants to read it can see it if they really want to, its a few posts above.
I have never tried to bargain on a repair. I trust that the garage is going to be fair, they give me an itemized invoice. If I think they aren't fair, then I will go somewhere else next time. I did say in an earlier post, I would probably buy another MB at home because the dealer has always treated me fairly, can't say the same for the 2 BMW dealers in my area. The indie garage I go to here gets 5 stars on every list, and people praise them for their work. You were a professional person, if someone wants work done it is unprofessional to try to make you work for less than you deserve.....I would not insult you by asking for a discount.

My SIL would do that, and you know what I think of him. The lawn guys said they would do his lawn for $60 a week. He says I will pay you $50 take it or leave it. That's his way of operating...it doesn't get him too far in life. I respect the guy enough to accept, or look for another quote.....but, I don't bargain for any repairs....on a car yes I will negotiate......not repairs.

    I
Never negotiate with someone who fixes your car or cooks your food. You might not like the result if they cut corners.
lol....we once had a gas station in town and they made little sandwiches and fast food inside. I don't think they realized the sign outside said "Get Gas Here"
There used to be a gas station near me named Pass'n Gas.

I was always a Stones guy, but I do like the Beatles (mostly Harrison and Lennon). Nothing like a lipsticked and mascarad Jagger singing “Can’t Always Get What You Want”.

@ab348 ....not to rub it in, but it’s supposed to be 70ºF in the Ohio Valley tomorrow.

One week with the Stinger update....

-Kia is under rating the posted power of the 3.3L TT. It’s very fast.
-it doesn’t need a dual clutch trans. Kia’s 8-speed is quick shifting and quite good.
-graphics on the 8” touchscreen are much better than those on many other cars I’ve driven. Still getting the hang of the interface, though. BTW, good job Kia on the touchscreen. It’s a matte finish which doesn’t show fingerprints.
-it’s not a hard core track car, but it does handle quite well. Even at speed, the steering stays communicative and doesn’t get “lite”. A nice cruiser on the interstate.
-will have first fill up at Costco tomorrow. Not sure how accurate the Stinger’s MPG computer is, but I’m sitting right at 20 MPG in mixed driving. Not as good as the TLX. But, not as bad as I thought it would be given how I’m driving it.
-Safety nannies are fine. Not as intrusive as some.
-I tend not to turn off the “start/stop” feature as I do with the Acura. It’s “re-fire” up after a stop is very fast....at most, a split second.
-Electronic transmission is also fast to shift into different gears. Putting it in reverse or drive is instantaneous. Sometimes in the TLX, it can take a couple of seconds.
-SPORT setting isn’t nearly as manic as it is in the TLX (SPORT +).
-Getting some questions (what is it?) and thumbs up as I drive it around.

I passed a train car on a semi today on I70. Always interesting what is being hauled there. I watch for the car carriers that have classic and special cars on them. The number of those seems to fluctuate. I don't know if it's cars to and from certain auctions that use that corridor or what.

The train car said "Bart" on the ends. I suspect it's a long way from home. I'd be interested in knowing where it was built...

As GG mentioned, it's unusually nice for January currently. We're having an average winter in this region. The last time I recall it being 70 in January was in 78 IIRC and later that day the temperature dropped as a heavy snow and wind moved in. The blizzard.

I guess the idea is to look ultra macho. I don't see many of them, the ultra macho types can get big huge pickup trucks to try and intimidate other drivers.
    Sometimes I see something like this on my back bumper, even when I am keeping up with the traffic in front of me;

Nothing macho about one of the premium brand CUV "coupes" . It's a mall-crawling buggy that might as well be a gasoline-estrogen hybrid.

I'm hoping to drive a GTS next week. The only "driving aid" nanny is BLIS, than goodness. Drift mode sends 100% of the torque to the rear LSD and locks out automatic upshifts. Sounds like a hoot.

What I like is when they ride my bumper and we come to a stop at a red light. If I am the first car in front of them then I take off when the light changes. The C250 looks pretty innocent, but the little turbo can really take off and those guys with all that hulky weight take some time to catch up....ha ha.

I'm looking at a GTS next week; the ability to route 100% of the torque to an LSD equipped rear axle is the major selling point for me. I wish it was faster appreciably quicker than my 2 Series, but I think I can live with a 13 second 1/4 mile. And it was developed by Albert Biermann, so there's that...

@driver100 ....thanks. White wouldn’t have been my first choice, but the deal on that car was just too good. It was the last ‘19 they had and the ‘20s were all over the lot. But, the white pearl is quite nice.

I know you’re really not in the market, but while I didn’t get to test drive it, while I was at the MB dealer test driving the C and E Class, I got to sit in the ‘20 CLA. Mercy....that was really nice inside. If it didn’t have the moniker on it, I would have mistaken it for an S-Class. Very nice. It had the BIG LCD screen for the gauges and User Interface. Seats were comfy. Plenty of room. Might be a solution for your Winter home.

@ab348 ....thanks...nice article. The biggest thing that kept me from pulling the trigger when I first drove one over a year ago was the Kia badge. After some research, it seemed they got the ‘18 paint issues sorted out. Gotta say, the paint on my ‘19 is very nice. I believe it will be fine.

@imidazol97 ....probably the one that’s most similar to your Malibu is the 4 cyl turbo. If the V6 wasn’t so dang good, I would have given the 4 cyl more serious consideration. Worth a test drive, for sure.

Nothing macho about one of the premium brand CUV "coupes" . It's a mall-crawling buggy that might as well be a gasoline-estrogen hybrid.

Nothing macho about a big lifted pickup either, more like overcompensating IMNSHO.

The only person I know with a big lifted pickup works his family farm down state. It spends more time in farm fields than it does on paved roads.
Yeah but I bet he shows it off every Saturday at Cows and Coffee. :p

Good article on the Stinger in the local paper from their syndication service. I enjoy Ms. Giacomini's reviews and she does not write puff pieces typically, so her positive comments here are undoubtedly factual. A few good pics also.

You should have driven the first one you saw, even if they weren’t interested in dealing. Then you could spend the rest of your shopping just emailing dealers, if you wanted one after the drive.

That's odd...The Chronicle Herald puts the obituaries right next to the car review page.
The article was very positive and it sounds like the Stinger deserves it. The interior looks great, I like those red seats. The instrument layout is done nicely, looks like a BMW, pretty straight forward and not overdone.
The writer feels thinks you should buy one soon as it may not catch on. It is a difficult market as sedan sales keep falling, and young people are more into conservation than performance. If I was in the market for a car in that category I would certainly put it on my list....sounds like a blast to drive. A manual would be even more fun.

Definitely for the AMG and all AMGs in general, and tallish (not necessarily lifted) vehicles in general, for the pretense of safety provided by the ride height, and the visibility.

My co-worker who has the GLE43 AMG "coupe" is a woman. I think she fell for the AMG cachet (which IMO isn't the same mystique as in the past due to the proliferation of less intense models, similar to the toned down BMW M and Audi S models) - not to mention the lease is something like 500/month sign and drive for an 80K car - I need to get a job with MB. In less urban areas, you'll occasionally see a truck with a sticker like "silly boys, trucks are for girls" or similar, although not often on brodozers.

I wonder if any women go to an MB dealership to buy a Mercedes GLE43 AMG? Or that Big Boy pickup?

When I had the E55 AMG, it was Subie bros around here who liked to try to get into it. I never quite grasped it, and seldom humored them.

I had brodozers wanting to race me most all of the time when I had the Mazdaspeed, and it's even worse with the 2er. I usually let them pull about a car length on me and then I floor it and leave them for dead. That really ticks them off...

LED is standard on those too, along with A-class, and is a mandatory option on 2020 E-class now. IMO, MB interior design is class-leading, and their screen integration knocks it out of the park. Current gen models have moved away from the stuck-on tablet look, which offended many, including myself. I love the widescreen LED in my E, and it was a deal-breaker option (not part of the basic package like in 2020).

They have one local reviewer, Richard Russell, who has been with them since the '70s I think. He has never reviewed a vehicle he didn't think was great. I'm sure the manufacturers must love him but his reviews need to be read with that in mind. Ms. Giacomini is a breath of fresh air and very good. The others they use are somewhere between the two extremes I noted.

@driver100 , the obits are almost always the single biggest section of the paper except for sports. It is shocking to see how the classifieds have basically disappeared, most days just a single page. I had an online subscription from my old workplace for years and there was usually not much in there worth reading, a situation that was made worse by a long (over a year) strike by their journalist staff when the paper tried to downsize in light of the changes in their circulation. The strike is now over but almost nobody from before that time remains on staff. My subscription has finally ended and I see no reason to buy a new one.

I've found my pearl white to be easy to maintain, much more than the dark blue of my prior car. Too bad it is a double extra cost option:

Replaced he cabin air filter in my F150 today.
Upper trim piece took a few tries to remove(didn't want to break it).
Had to improvise by using 3 putty knives to loosen. so I could remove.
Watched several of them several times before deciding to go with this one.

I wasn't a fan of white, silver and other light colors. I liked black, dark blue, maroon and medium jewel colors. However I now gravitate to lighter colors that seem to be easier to keep looking nice and keep the car cooler. Thinking back my opinion of colors was influenced by dad who didn't like white, silver, etc. He said darker colors show off the chrome trim better.
