Two charts from a piece in today's New York Times. There are different charts in this article based on different scenarios.

    https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/03/13/opinion/coronavirus-trump-response.html

I think those death projections are wishful thinking on the part of the NYT.
I did read a biased article in the NYT about how Germany should vote to put speed limits on the Autobahn, and they are like Americans clinging to the 2nd Amendment in regards to having no speed limits.

Then they said something to the effect of: 70% of the Autobahn is limitless, 30% is limited, and that the safety is clear, because the limited sections have 26% lower fatalities!!!

Little do they know that anyone that can do a little math would know that they just made a very compelling and powerful argument for no speed limits. As 70/30 would indicate that the limited sections should be 57% lower in fatalities, assuming they were EQUALLY safe. Since their own data and argument stated it was only 26% lower, it is clear which method is working to save lives better!

Of course, this doesn't take into account traffic and miles driven, but neither did their evidence or poorly written opinion piece, so I'm only using their own figures against them. Strange how they used word and number play to try and convey a conclusion the opposite of what the figures and data show to be true.
The problem with your post is that the limited sections don't have 26% lower fatalities, they have a 26% lower fatality rate. Big difference there. That means that for an equal number of miles driven there will be fewer fatalities on the limited sections then on the unlimited sections. Completely the opposite of your conclusion.
Where do you get that information as the word "rate" wasn't used in the article, so you must have another source? Or are you just inventing things? I find when fatalities are talked about the word "rate" is deliberately left out, not accidentally left out. Is this the one exception of all-time? We shall find out.....

    Drumroll....

    P.S.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/03/world/europe/germany-autobahn-speed-limit.html?action=click&module=RelatedCoverage&pgtype=Article&region=Footer

Quoting "The number of deadly accidents on stretches of autobahn that have a speed limit is 26 percent lower than on those without."

You might have different English comprehension than I do, but my language skills indicates "the number of deadly accidents" is most definitely a figure, and not a rate.

So based on this I'm going to say you pulled your post out of your behind with no substantiation or support, much like the way most of the speed limits in the USA are decided in the first place.
I didn't read that article but I have researched the issue and I am going off of a German Government statistic that gave the fatality rates separated by limited and unlimited sections of the autobahn. Those statistics showed a marked decline in the fatality rate in the sections with a speed limit. A quick web search revealed only overall fatality rates but I will do a more complete search when time permits. I do recall we discussed this before and I'll see I'd I can find the posts on it.

Also there is another flaw in your argument, can you figure it out?
I've already pointed it out. Just because more fatalities happen where there are speed limits, and less happen where there are none, and there are more miles of no speed limits on the Autobahn vs. limited sections, it doesn't mean more people drive more miles on that roadway vs. the other. I've always preferred vehicle miles traveled in high sample sizes like the billions. It's the fairest and most honest equalizer by far. Population is pretty meaningless because you could have a million people that never drive.

I don't think we've ever gone into the intricacies and details of the Autobahn before, because the facts of the Autobahn don't fit your preconceived notions and biases. You usually discount it as superior German DNA, training, licensing, and enforcement.

Everywhere in the world I've looked, putting speed limits where there were none has resulted in higher fatality rates, whether it be Montana, Australia, or anywhere else.

I've looked at a great number of these studies. Your "speed kills" myth propagating crowd hates using rates. Like the NY Time article, they almost always speak about fatalities in deceptive numbers that don't take rates into account. This is nothing new. I didn't suddenly figure this out. I just see it every time I'm reading something from the IIHS, the NHTSA, Australia, or the fake and failing news media. There's a consistency to the sources on "your side," and that's not a compliment.

Did I get it wrong....wouldn't surprise me - I often think outside the box, or some might say not the norm? Isn't johnmorgan asking whether it is better to have a manual or an automatic transmission....not what gear or golf club you want to use?
I would prefer a manual but a lot of "ifs", some being, need to have roads with few stops, if there is a car I like that offers a manual, if I am young enough that my shifting arm and both legs are working. There are more, but those reasons alone would make me choose an automatic in my case.

In order to curtail @driver100 from his multitude of postings, I would suggest that he:

Spend more time communicating with his lovely wife; learn "dog" language so he could better understand his pup; go car shopping several times a week; read more books by his favorite authors; take up a hobby like bike riding or woodworking; learn how to play bridge and then join a bridge club; become a "HAM RADIO" fanatic and try sending cute and informative radio messages to someone in Australia or South Africa; adopt a child and learn how to change a diaper; become a volunteer at your local hospital delivering daily newspapers to hospitalized men and women; become a Crossing Guard at a local elementary school and smile at the little darlings as they cross the street; become a lifeguard at a community pool and blow your whistle at the kids who splash water with their hands! 😛😜🤪😋

If he takes one or two of those above suggestions and implements an activity or two, that should slow down his postings!🤙

Up here there are a few choices for online grocery ordering, but really only 2 offer a full assortment, Superstore (Loblaws), and Walmart. The Superstore online ordering functionality was very poor, so I then tried Walmart which was slick and worked well. I selected a pickup day 3 or 4 days out, which was yesterday. Turned out I was impressed, much to my surprise. They were slammed with business, and 4 of us showed up almost at the same time, so it took them a while to respond to the phone number you call to tell them you're there. But after a few minutes two staffers came out pushing large carts full of those plastic boxes they use when they are restocking, and in them were the grocery bags for all 4 of us, each clearly marked. The lady loaded my trunk with my stuff, refused the tip I offered, and was remarkably pleasant and cheerful. I got home and discovered they were only out of stock on a couple of items, nothing major, plus one sort of funny discovery. I had ordered one of those little 3 or 4 oz jars of minced garlic to cook with. They were out of that, so they substituted a 1 kg (2.2 lb.) restaurant-size jar of the same at the little jar price. It is the size of a giant peanut butter jar. I don't know how long it stays good but it is possibly a lifetime supply.

I was so impressed that I might continue doing grocery business with them this way after all this is over.

We almost never shop at Walmart but we were impressed with their pickup service too. Even the chicken and salmon were excellent quality, and the bagged salads had really good expiry dates. When "The Guy" loaded into the trunk he said they made two substitutions, he named them, and asked if that was OK or should he return them.
We used this service because we could pick it up in 3 days instead of 1 week.

I just hope that you home shoppers “sanitize” your delivered/picked-up goods when you get them home. Then you have to clean off your counters. Who knows how many have handled the items and what the personal hygiene of the handler is like.

I wonder if the home shoppers stock from the back of the stores and this is one reason the shelves are not fully stocked. Anyone know?

No they don't. Most grocery stores have a person with a cart and scanning device "picking" the order. Once complete they bring it to a bagging room to place the labels on the bags and place the cold goods in the coolers.

I am almost positive that a KC-135 is a converted 707. That is a large gas station with wings.

The Air Force also used 707's for flying intelligence planes that were absolutely loaded with the latest sophisticated electronic gear. When I was in the Navy I had a Top Secret security clearance because of the stuff we hauled around in all of the planes in our squadron at particular times. But when we met the crew of one of those planes at a Navy base in Quonset Point RI, I remember asking if they would give us a tour. However, we could only go into certain sections of that plane due to security reasons. When I boasted that some of us had a Top Secret clearance, their plane captain said, "yeah, but you don't have a need to know clearance". That's when I learned my Top Secret clearance was really no big deal. Kinda pidly when you come right down to it.

Or, more likely, it is not a real post and we are all just having fun with it. ;b

Oh, and I think he had something like 14000 posts, so not just a quick drop in.
    Poster had 2 posts.
We all had only two posts at one time.
Right, and look what our poster buddy @driver100 parlayed that into. :(

    jmonroe

I would, except you and my good buddy JMonroe would miss me :p
Yes, just like I miss my liver cancer! 😛😜🤪
I'd rather have a root canal.

    jmonroe
Good. You go out and arrange for a root canal. Post the invoice for it, and I'll stop posting. :(
I can't do that becasue I will not be charged for root canals. Why? Because when Mrs. j worked she was the head honcho of the front office for a pair of dentists that specialized in root canals. Any time either of us needed a root canal whatever wasn't covered by insurance was covered by "professional courtesy". One guy has already retired but the other guy is down to only 2 days a week. I guess that courtesy will only last until he hangs up his drill.

If you are true to your word it will be very easy to have an invoice created and forwarded to you. Gee, if only it could be that easy.

made my weekly foray into the world for supplies. Got bulk produce at Produce Junction. not many customers, lots of stock of everything. Then hit shop rite. Really not very crowded, and people mostly stayed apart. fairly well organized and largely stocked up. plenty of meat. only really short in the pasta department (odd) but I got the required spaghetti. and the clorox wipes aisle was, well, "wiped out'. And not cheap hamburger buns. pretty good on everything else though.

other than maybe stopping at Aldis for buns (doubt they would have wipes) should be good to hibernate for at least another week. and other than maybe some veggies, easily could go 2 weeks.

Went to Kroger hoping to find kidney beans for chili tonight. Jackpot. The mostly empty shelves
had Bush's and Kroger brand of kidney beans.

Checked for sanitizing wipes. Jackpot. They had put out 12 Chlorox brand! Took only 1.

    Self checkout:

    Bad news--
the nasty, bulldog type lady was watching the group of 6 I went into. I lost my
grip on the 7-Up 2 liter and it became a 7-Down 2 liter into the cart. But that wasn't good.
The bottle split part way up the side. Imagine 7-Up spraying out the seam after being
agitated by hitting the bottom of the cart. The lady just stood and watched. I put my hand
over the spray, but it had wet down a 6-foot diameter
circle of the self-checkout rows. The lady didn't say much, but her body language wasn't good. After
I stood there instead of leaving with my cart for about 4 minutes, one of the nice supervisor types
who's been there a long time brought me a replacement bottle without my asking. Nice.
I had been waiting for the nasty one to stop running around so I could ask about getting a replacement.

    Good news--
the 7-Up was diet, so the mess didn't have sugar in it on the floor and stay sticky in that
area despite mopping. Easy to clean up when the "cleanup at register 27" gets there.
And the cart will be washed sitting in the parking lot.

I just came from the produce store too... In typical WHP fashion I was stopped to make my left and hear screeching. Look in the rear view and see a beige 93+ Accord trying for dear life to miss me. He saw a window in the right lane, then cut off another car and in the process nearly side swiped me. That would have just made my day.

I tried "Instacart" delivery shortly before the current situation, as I received a promo offer for a big discount and free delivery, and a local store claimed to have something in stock I couldn't find on my own. I learned the hard way that the default setting on the app apparently allowed for substitutions with no notice, so I received something different, not an exact match. I contacted the company about this, and they gave me a credit for the entire order - I hope the driver wasn't held responsible for bad user interface. I tipped them anyway. I then exhausted my credit with many frivolous items (after changing the substitution preference, at the time I believe only possible via the website), and again tipped. Probably won't use it again. as some markups are real (they gotta make money somehow), and they don't observe club member sale prices.

I notice I am running lowish on milk, I'll probably go out in the morning before 8am to avoid hordes. Part of me wants to go to Costco just to observe the spectacle, but I don't need to buy anything, so maybe in a few weeks.

I really like Costco Kirkland garbage bags. I buy them on amazon. If the Costco were closer, or allowed nonmember shopping at certain times, I'd buy them locally. But I was curtly _informed_ by someone when I checked Costco a couple years back that they weren't building another store in the area and they don't have nonmember shopping the way Sams used to do.

AFAIK if you get a Costco gift card, you can get in without a membership. Or just hit up a friend/relative to pick things up for you. My mom lives an hour + from the nearest Costco and doesn't like to drive that far anymore, so I end up with shopping duty for her a few times a year.

From everything I've heard, you can buy, just not from the showroom. Look at their stock, tell them what you want to test drive and they'll bring it to your house. That starts the process. I would imagine the F&I would go pretty fast too. If they start the heavy handed stuff, just let your German Sheppard out of the basement.

Well I learned something here yet again. I can buy from costco.com for a small upcharge and maybe a delivery charge.

I wonder if the same is true for Sam's club's website?

Instacart has a section that asks you to approve any substitution, or suggest your own substitutes. My shopper also texted me throughout the shopping trip to inform me of any shortages (for some reason, the peanut butter shelf was stripped bare). It’s not perfect and it does cost a bit more, but in the middle of a pandemic I can deal with it. I am minimizing my exposure to any public space.
We just had our first online training session today. Lots of technical glitches, and also lots of goodwill and making do. Got us moving! The gym is also offering free online classes to members through Instagram Live. An incentive for folks not to cancel their memberships.

I saw that on the web, but not on the app, at least not when I ordered. To their credit, Instacart resolved the complaint quickly and more than enough to satisfy me.

My gym has an app and has been sending out video workouts (they have also suspended recurring billing). I have yet to take advantage of one, maybe sometime, as it appears we'll be in this for at least a few weeks.

    Remember these?

I do, though I thought they always were kind of cheesy. They remind me of the Wood & Pickett Mini conversions, some of which seemed somewhat more tasteful.

Our gym is not a chain, but locally owned. If people suspend their memberships and this goes on for months, we may not have a gym to come back to.

I have discovered how many dealers have my email. It is a lot. they are all pushing being opened for service. and quite a few touting that they are still selling, and just doing it all electronically somehow, and will bring the car out to you for a test drive and delivery if you buy it.

local chain dealer is offering 20% off on service to health care workers. Their showroom is closed but they don’t make it clear if they are still selling cars. I wonder if you knew what unit you wanted if they would deliver it to you.

Why buy a new car right now...you can't really go anywhere? You can't even show it to your friends - they can't get close enough to look at it. Taking a trip is not any fun. Your warranty clock is ticking, and your car is sitting in your driveway. :@

Oh that's right. I forgot about the holy warranty clock ticking away. That's something only a DIYer would overlook. I'll do my best not to pass on bum dope in the future about when to buy a new car, regardless of a possible inventory glut on dealers lots.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

I heard that Costco will have "senior" hours at 8:00 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays. From what I read, everyone going in has to be a senior, so no younger guests or even spouse with you. I might try it on Tuesday. My wife wants to bake and we couldn't find flour at the grocery store. If Costco has it, we should end up with enough to last for a while!
The latest wrinkle in this strange time is that they don't want you to bring your own bags to the store. And Vermont was going to ban single use bags beginning in July. I wonder if that law will now get changed?

that happened down here in NJ I think. we were getting that rule, but it seems like they are over looking it now. Plus, seems like stores (BJs and Shop Rite that I went to yesterday) are all doing away with returns. Both had big signs up that they are not taking returns on anything. Might not be good for the hoarders who soon find out they do not, in fact, need 14 huge containers of Crisco.

last night we patronized one of our regular places, a little (very good) Thai restaurant. Take out or delivery only of course. so I called in the order. required a CC over the phone to minimize contact. When I arrived, instead of going to the counter in the back (where people usually go to pick up takeout) you called them again, and they brought it out to you. Very weird.

The wife seemed to like the experience. So many new delivery containers that she insisted on washing and keeping (because we only have a cabinet full of real tupperware stuff and corelle glassware) since everyone needs a drawer full of that stuff too.
