A poster on the nextdoor app reported that Kirkland Costco had TP yesterday too. Going to be hilarious to see people try to return it and be denied, the tantrums and hopefully removal from the premises if they don't simmer down.

The past several days I've walked past C-F-A on my afternoon walk, always between 10-15 cars in line (the place is sited hilariously poor, with traffic often backing up onto the street, I have to imagine someone was either drunk or had greased palms to approve the layout).

Our C-F-A is sited the same way, with cars backing out into the main street everyone uses. Maybe a thing for them. I don’t eat there and don’t plan to. Not really a fast food person.
Our local CFA has a rather large parking area that it can spill out into, no chance for spilling out onto the road. Starbucks on the other hand is spilling out onto the roads around here.
Another Chyck Fil A is now being planned for Huber Heights on north of Metro area. It's on a very busy road 4 lanes each way plus turn lanes, with a divider in middle. The lot is relatively narrow but long. It does have access out the back where it used to back up to a truck stop in the old days, that was broken into separate lots, motel, Waffle House, Target. The rear access gets to a busy side road that serves Fed Ex (Ground or Freight?) and other truck yards. I can't imagine how they're going to make this work, having seen various CFA lots that are a mess, including one on east side of Louisville.

They might be buying the mattress store adjacent to the restaurant lot but that wasn't mentioned in the article.

Hi everyone, I am new here. Tell me please which gear is better manual or auto? Thanks

Did I get it wrong....wouldn't surprise me - I often think outside the box, or some might say not the norm? Isn't johnmorgan asking whether it is better to have a manual or an automatic transmission....not what gear or golf club you want to use?
I would prefer a manual but a lot of "ifs", some being, need to have roads with few stops, if there is a car I like that offers a manual, if I am young enough that my shifting arm and both legs are working. There are more, but those reasons alone would make me choose an automatic in my case.
Or, more likely, it is not a real post and we are all just having fun with it. ;b
Or maybe it’s person with a disability like the blind guy who was using a voice/text device or maybe someone with limited English. I rather assume it was legit than make some new poster feel slighted.

Oh, and I think he had something like 14000 posts, so not just a quick drop in.
    Poster had 2 posts.
We all had only two posts at one time.
Right, and look what our poster buddy @driver100 parlayed that into. :(

    jmonroe
In order to curtail @driver100 from his multitude of postings, I would suggest that he:

Spend more time communicating with his lovely wife; learn "dog" language so he could better understand his pup; go car shopping several times a week; read more books by his favorite authors; take up a hobby like bike riding or woodworking; learn how to play bridge and then join a bridge club; become a "HAM RADIO" fanatic and try sending cute and informative radio messages to someone in Australia or South Africa; adopt a child and learn how to change a diaper; become a volunteer at your local hospital delivering daily newspapers to hospitalized men and women; become a Crossing Guard at a local elementary school and smile at the little darlings as they cross the street; become a lifeguard at a community pool and blow your whistle at the kids who splash water with their hands! 😛😜🤪😋

If he takes one or two of those above suggestions and implements an activity or two, that should slow down his postings!🤙
I would, except you and my good buddy JMonroe would miss me :p
Yes, just like I miss my liver cancer! 😛😜🤪
I'd rather have a root canal.

    jmonroe
Good. You go out and arrange for a root canal. Post the invoice for it, and I'll stop posting. :(
I can't do that becasue I will not be charged for root canals. Why? Because when Mrs. j worked she was the head honcho of the front office for a pair of dentists that specialized in root canals. Any time either of us needed a root canal whatever wasn't covered by insurance was covered by "professional courtesy". One guy has already retired but the other guy is down to only 2 days a week. I guess that courtesy will only last until he hangs up his drill.

If you are true to your word it will be very easy to have an invoice created and forwarded to you. Gee, if only it could be that easy.

    jmonroe
    Here you go.

Great. Forward that to @driver100 and sign my name.

We did the same thing as @stickguy last night. We ordered from a local bar we frequent. They have been running specials. Credit card with tip and the guy brought it to our doorstep. Knocked and went on his way.

I prefer to tip the driver in cash, but this was their request.

I'm even staying away from cash as much as possible. I never used a debit or credit card for small purchases, but now I do. I bought some lottery tickets for Mrs. Venture yesterday and put the $4 on a credit card.
Cash usually tries to stay away from "me"! :disappointed:

I think there needs to be a new, separate topic for autobahn speed discussions.

    What about a separate website?

local chain dealer is offering 20% off on service to health care workers. Their showroom is closed but they don’t make it clear if they are still selling cars. I wonder if you knew what unit you wanted if they would deliver it to you.

Spent the day doing yard work and got a rude reminder that I’m not a kid any more.

From everything I've heard, you can buy, just not from the showroom. Look at their stock, tell them what you want to test drive and they'll bring it to your house. That starts the process. I would imagine the F&I would go pretty fast too. If they start the heavy handed stuff, just let your German Sheppard out of the basement.

    jmonroe
Why buy a new car right now...you can't really go anywhere? You can't even show it to your friends - they can't get close enough to look at it. Taking a trip is not any fun. Your warranty clock is ticking, and your car is sitting in your driveway. :@
Oh that's right. I forgot about the holy warranty clock ticking away. That's something only a DIYer would overlook. I'll do my best not to pass on bum dope in the future about when to buy a new car, regardless of a possible inventory glut on dealers lots.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

    jmonroe
I’m betting that the discounts you could get on a new car now would more than pay for an extended warranty.

You can always take your car out for a joy ride. Go tour the mountains by yourself. I’m thinking of doing a three state tour just to find the cheapest gas.
Don't forget to wear gloves or wipe the handle of the gas pump after you use it. Kind of adds so much to the driving experience. And, these days, never used to happen, they deduct depreciation on a monthly basis, so while you are driving your car about 50 miles a month for the next 3 months...your new car has depreciated a few $1000s.
Any way you look at it you’re going to lose money owning a car.
Yeh but, better to lose money on it and actually be able to drive it.

Costco last night: RUG $1.70; PUG $2.20. No sanitizing wipes, but got blueberries, Pirate's Booty, Cheese and a cheese pizza to go. As uncrowded as I've ever seen it.
Didn't check for TP as I'm well stocked.
Putting a few miles on the Jag as I communte back and forth from Fiance's place. Also, hurt my back yesterday, to go with another left leg injury. So, no running for a bit. I am going to inflate.

Today I noticed that the Clubman's passenger side rear view mirror glass was beginning to separate from its mounting plate. Unfortunately, no repair shops were open today. I knew I risked causing expensive damage by attempting a repair-perhaps even setting the car on fire-but I gritted my teeth and used a toothpick to apply some cyanoacrylate gel to the mounting plate and held the mirror in place for 60 seconds. The repair seems to have worked, but I'm keeping my eye on it- and I'm making sure that a fire extinguisher is close by!

Unless BMW uses some exotic heating method I think those mirrors are all just glued in. The ones I’ve replaced just have a small electric heating grid on the back and a plug connector to the power system.

All in all, some of the cleverest TV commercials being aired now are by the auto insurance companies - particularly GEICO! Then again, some of the worst TV commercials are being aired by auto insurance companies - namely Progressive and ESPECIALLY Liberty Mutual and that idiotic Emu - "LiMuEmu". I'd love to hunt that emu if given the chance! 😝😩

I believe for my leSabres the heated Muth mirrors called for silicon glue--meaning silicon caulk. I had damaged one of my mirrors and was checking into how to switch it to a new housing.

Yeah, that Netflix Tiger King show demonstrates that truth can be stranger than fiction. Just about finished the first episode, and then decided that was enough for one day. Probably watch some more tomorrow.

Here's a water view of that bridge. Looks pretty solid considering I doubt it's been maintained since it was built around 1945. The road was abandoned probably more than fifty years ago, although it's possible someone with a Jeep still uses it once in a while.

You got that right. Last week when I hadn't fully adjusted to being shut in, about 10 o'clock one night I decided to sip on about 4 ounces of bourbon. In walks Mrs j and she says, "why are drinking that"? I answered, "what should I do with it...soak my feet in it". Then it hit me, by drinking it, it gets to all parts of my body even hair folicals. That is true medicinal purposes. Which reminds me it's almost 10 PM right now. B)

"Okay. Anyone else watching Tiger King?"

Well, I'm into it about 4.5 episodes, and it's the sort of thing that helps one (or me anyway) realize that no matter how weird I think I am, I can't compete in that league. I heard about it a week or so ago and finally started watching yesterday -- I'll probably finish it up tomorrow. So far I've ended up disliking all of the main players except for the reality show producer, but he may come a cropper too in the next 2.5 episodes.

I can be down at his house in about 15 minutes. Well, not now. Apparently they just instituted a 14 day domestic travel ban in the state (NJ, NY, maybe connecticut). Only allowed out for "essential" reasons. Of course to me, keeping my car from rotting away counts as essential. I think this is more geared toward north Jersey.NYC. I really doubt people in upstate and central NYS are paying any attention, or even down around my area outside Philly. Unlikely you will get stopped, and just in case, I will make sure to have a written out shopping list of vital stuff handy to show the cop (through the glass of course!)

Two charts from a piece in today's New York Times. There are different charts in this article based on different scenarios.

    https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/03/13/opinion/coronavirus-trump-response.html

I think those death projections are wishful thinking on the part of the NYT.
I did read a biased article in the NYT about how Germany should vote to put speed limits on the Autobahn, and they are like Americans clinging to the 2nd Amendment in regards to having no speed limits.

Then they said something to the effect of: 70% of the Autobahn is limitless, 30% is limited, and that the safety is clear, because the limited sections have 26% lower fatalities!!!

Little do they know that anyone that can do a little math would know that they just made a very compelling and powerful argument for no speed limits. As 70/30 would indicate that the limited sections should be 57% lower in fatalities, assuming they were EQUALLY safe. Since their own data and argument stated it was only 26% lower, it is clear which method is working to save lives better!

Of course, this doesn't take into account traffic and miles driven, but neither did their evidence or poorly written opinion piece, so I'm only using their own figures against them. Strange how they used word and number play to try and convey a conclusion the opposite of what the figures and data show to be true.
The problem with your post is that the limited sections don't have 26% lower fatalities, they have a 26% lower fatality rate. Big difference there. That means that for an equal number of miles driven there will be fewer fatalities on the limited sections then on the unlimited sections. Completely the opposite of your conclusion.
Where do you get that information as the word "rate" wasn't used in the article, so you must have another source? Or are you just inventing things? I find when fatalities are talked about the word "rate" is deliberately left out, not accidentally left out. Is this the one exception of all-time? We shall find out.....

    Drumroll....

    P.S.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/02/03/world/europe/germany-autobahn-speed-limit.html?action=click&module=RelatedCoverage&pgtype=Article&region=Footer

Quoting "The number of deadly accidents on stretches of autobahn that have a speed limit is 26 percent lower than on those without."

You might have different English comprehension than I do, but my language skills indicates "the number of deadly accidents" is most definitely a figure, and not a rate.

So based on this I'm going to say you pulled your post out of your behind with no substantiation or support, much like the way most of the speed limits in the USA are decided in the first place.
I didn't read that article but I have researched the issue and I am going off of a German Government statistic that gave the fatality rates separated by limited and unlimited sections of the autobahn. Those statistics showed a marked decline in the fatality rate in the sections with a speed limit. A quick web search revealed only overall fatality rates but I will do a more complete search when time permits. I do recall we discussed this before and I'll see I'd I can find the posts on it.

Also there is another flaw in your argument, can you figure it out?
I've already pointed it out. Just because more fatalities happen where there are speed limits, and less happen where there are none, and there are more miles of no speed limits on the Autobahn vs. limited sections, it doesn't mean more people drive more miles on that roadway vs. the other. I've always preferred vehicle miles traveled in high sample sizes like the billions. It's the fairest and most honest equalizer by far. Population is pretty meaningless because you could have a million people that never drive.
Sorry you didn't, you made the claim that the high speed sections were safer because the sections with a speed limit being 30% of the roads had 26% fewer fatalities and if they were equally safe it would have larger percentage. You totally ignored vehicle miles traveled, I was the one who brought it up.
    andres3 said:

I don't think we've ever gone into the intricacies and details of the Autobahn before, because the facts of the Autobahn don't fit your preconceived notions and biases. You usually discount it as superior German DNA, training, licensing, and enforcement.

Yes we have, or at least I have. A long time ago you posted that the autobahn was the safest highway system in the world despite having no speed limits (spoiler alert it isnt). I replied that it wasn't a good ideal to truly compare the autobahn to the interstate highways since they exist in different environments with different customs and laws. I mentioned that a better comparison would be between Germany and Denmark. At that time Denmark had a safer highway system based on fatalities per vehicle miles traveled and they have a speed limit on all their highways. But the fatality rate of the Danish highways was approximately equal to the fatality rate on the sections of the autobahn with speed limits.

Now while DNA is rather silly there are differences between the US and Germany that do account for Germany having safer roads.

Yes Germanys licensing process is far more difficult and more expensive than here in the US. It truly does make the US's look like a joke, something that has been discussed here before. This includes training at high speeds.

Germans tend to follow traffic laws far more than they do here, again this has been discussed here at length.

Germany is a much smaller country that has a much higher population density with a very good public transit system. Think less driver fatigue.

Germany has a higher population density than the US. Because of this an accident in Germany will result in emergency services getting to the accident faster than say in rural Nebraska, the sooner medical care is administered the greater the chance of surviving. This is one of reasons why rural fatality rates are higher than urban rates.

Germany does a better job on up keeping the autobahn than most states do for their roads.

I've looked at a great number of these studies. Your "speed kills" myth propagating crowd hates using rates. Like the NY Time article, they almost always speak about fatalities in deceptive numbers that don't take rates into account. This is nothing new. I didn't suddenly figure this out. I just see it every time I'm reading something from the IIHS, the NHTSA, Australia, or the fake and failing news media. There's a consistency to the sources on "your side," and that's not a compliment.

Dont talk about others using deceptive numbers when you started this with deceptive numbers.
I didn't use deceptive numbers. Goodness gracious.

I was just pointing out how the NY Times used deceptive numbers without any qualification to support their argument or Opinion piece.

I was using their own numbers against them. They are not my numbers.

I've never said the Autobahn is the safest in the world, just that it is very safe by worldwide standards. It is always hovering at about 1/2 the fatality rate of US highways. Someone should look into how people from outside Germany are probably "padding" the bad stats.

Unless BMW uses some exotic heating method I think those mirrors are all just glued in. The ones I’ve replaced just have a small electric heating grid on the back and a plug connector to the power system.

Hunkered down with my newly acquired go to bourbon, Basil Hayden, last night with the GF. Fired up the home theater. Popped popcorn the old fashioned way (kernels in a kettle with oil). We agreed to let each pick the movie they wanted to see, and the other had to abide with the choices.

She wanted to watch JUDY. Judy Garland was a tad before my time (except, of course, Wizard of Oz). Renee Zelweiger (sp?) was absolutely outstanding. Movie was about her last years, which were filled with sadness. GF loved it. I could have done a hard pass, but a deal’s a deal.

I chose Raging Bull, which I hadn’t seen in quite some time. Love that movie. GF had never seen it. She thought it was filled with chauvinistic machismo, which I explained to her, was the point of the movie.

Both movies based on true stories. Both about very broken people. Went to bed feeling good about myself.

I’m only in the mood for cheery or fun movies. Escapist murder mysteries too. Finally got around to seeing Ford v Ferrari. Lots of 60s posturing, lots of racing, what’s not to like? We saw Knives Out at the movies awhile back, also very fun. Great acting performances in both.
