Mass Governor just announced schools will be closed to May 4. My friends with young'uns are not overly happy with this news.
My last visit to Costco, much Charmin TP, no Kirkland. Limit one 30 pack per customer.
I have no people, joys of condo living.

They want their kids to go to school where they could obtain the virus......don't know what kind of thinking that is? Kids aren't going to be knowledgeable about how to be safe. This virus can live on a surface for days (they found it in the rooms on the cruise ship after 17 days), it passes from person to person easily, it does breakdown and washes away with soap and a good scrubbing.

I did a very thorough comparison between Charmin and Kirkland brand TP and the Kirkland brand came out very favorably. Just saying.

Kirkland products are top quality....I still like name brands though for some things ;) Just saying.....

Once things return to normal, gyms and weight loss centers will be raking in the business. It'll be funny to see the average weight gain in locked down areas, as bored office workers turn to comfort food to combat their anxiety.

X2 I can see it in my own eating and exercising habits. I see people at Krogers hitting the ice cream and desserts cases heavily.

Another big seller right now is cans of baked beans!

One thing...how are you people doing who live on your own? Normally that might not be too bad, but, if you have no contact with anyone for days that must be difficult. At least in normal times you can talk to a store clerk, wander around a grocery store, test drive a new car etc. At least it is nice to have Mrs D100 and Trixie around.

Kroger and Walmart are putting up plastic windows between the cashiers and customers in the lines to reduce passing sneeze and cough droplets along with normal speech forming droplets of contaminated goop. So soon won't even enjoy a friendly hello. It'll be like paying through the hole in the quarter inch plexiglass that showed up at 24-hour gas and cigarette stations in the 80s/90s?

Reminds me a little my childhood in communist Poland in early 80s, when butter was delivered once a day in the afternoon and you had to be in line by 2-2:30 pm to get a bar (two stick equivalent). I specifically remember one time I joined that line (my school was over by 1 pm) quite early and was in the front, until just half hour before the delivery, when suddenly all those people showed up and got "their spot" in front of me. Then the delivery came, less than usual, so under pressure of people from the end of the line they sold only half bar to everybody. So after nearly 3 hours of standing in line I brought home equivalent of one stick... Very efficient time use.

Interesting story. We have been very fortunate in this country most of the time.

My Dad was telling me about the thing at Canals. Apparently that happened after PA announced liquor stores were closing.

There was a story on the local news how people from Pittsburgh are travelling to Weirton, Morgantown, Wheeling, etc. to purchase liquor since West Virginia sells it in grocery stores.

I predict maybe 5-10lbs for myself at this rate. Trying not to eat much more, but no gyms and coming off a minor leg/back injury means I am not getting a lot of exercise - trying to get in a walk every day and maybe a couple minutes with some weights. Ugh never thought I'd say I miss the gym.

Not bad. I read one today (not making this up), that 5G wireless data launched in Wuhan last year caused a genetic mutation that announced itself via COVID. People take this seriously.

Then again, the despicable talk media types who like to sell supplements etc have been cashing in on this too.

speaking of that, I chatted with my sister yesterday. She lives by herself (in a townhouse) in Virginia, and has worked from home for years, so is used to that. But was having a lot of trouble adjusting to losing all her people contact activity. Meeting friends, going to the gym and yoga, stuff like that. It was really giving her adjustment issues the first week but she said that it was a bit better the 2nd week.

I told her to explore as many virtual options as possible. better than nothing!

That's not so farfetched not that I believe it but it did start in Wuhan and the Chinese government kept it under wraps until they couldn't hide it anymore. If the world had known about it sooner we wouldn't be where we are now. One more reason to like a Communist country. The world has been in bed with these guys for so long no one knows how to get out of that bed but somebody better figure out how to do it. Too late may be sooner than we'd like to admit for several reasons.

I have only minor contact normally, an occasional lunch or coffee date. But you’re right in that losing contact just browsing in stores, etc is missed. Not too bad so far but we’ll see what happens if this goes on another few weeks.

Yup. Pandora's Box has been opened. Too late now.

It's pretend-communist, more of a totalitarian kleptocracy. I wouldn't believe any of the numbers coming from that region.

When it comes to losing contact with people, that's why we have phones. I'm still feeling fine, other than missing my hockey team. As the online jokes are saying now, GenX has been waiting for an excuse to isolate again.

that may be one outcome of all this. Some products at least are likely to have production reshored. At least figure out the important stuff that you need to have available and make sure you have production of that stuff, to not have to depend on overseas production, especially just China.

It's pretty damn bad when you have lost so much manufacturing capacity that you might have to rely on an enemy to make bullets for you.

All our hearings are now on Skype; the judge, defense counsel, and myself are all in our individual offices with another link to the detention center. The only cases being heard involve defendants in custody. We are trying to keep the detention center population down by allowing non-violent offenders who aren't flight risks to post bond.

For all those looking for virtual exercise, here is a link for our dojo. Hope it is OK to post. Its not like I make any money on it. We just want the word to spread so maybe it can grow and sustain itself at least. At least it is free for a month and maybe this will all be over by then.

I'm curious to see how many of the on the fly changes happening now become more routine and "stick" going forward. People tend to avoid change to the way things are always done until something pushes them, and they find out they like it. I bet a whole lot of people get hooked on grocery delivery that might have never used it otherwise. Maybe car dealers do more contactless (the carvana model they are adopting quickly to stay in business). And of course, a lot of companies are finding out that WFH, at least for some jobs, is really doable.

This new way of doing hearings? Maybe that is the wave of the future. Easier of course if you set up for it correctly. A room at the facility, dedicated equipment, whatever. Save a lot of time effort and manpower (and probably risk) shuttling prisoners back and forth for brief hearings especially.

the other thing I expect to really take off is telemedicine. with smart phone/computer technology and apps, maybe with a gadget you plug into a USB port to get vitals, and the camera gives the medical professional the visual. Maybe can't cover everything, but you triage out the basic stuff, and if something requires coming in, you have a lot of simple stuff peeled off the top, saving office visits for more serious stuff.

I'm sure there are plenty of other things happening now that were uncommon (or non-existent) not long ago that might not be going forward.

I hate not getting together in person with either friends or businesses. I can’t wait to start having friends over again, going out to restaurants, back to my gym again, actually getting my own groceries. I’m fortunate to not br in actual need like some folks. But I am not enjoying “social distancing” one bit.

A staggering 3.3 million people filed for unemployment amid coronavirus pandemic. Apparently social distancing does not work when it comes to filing unemployment claims. Why can't claims be filed online to lesser the risk of contracting the virus.

Notice that these persons are not too concerned as they waited in line for help with unemployment benefits at the One-Stop Career Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on Tuesday.JOHN LOCHER/ASSOCIATED PRESS [Sorry I can't post picture]

It takes time to steer an entrenched system like that. But at least in NJ it is all done online (filing, then a phone call). With exception of a required group session where you learn about job hunting, etc. I believe that now though they are suspending that. But hugely backed up with the part of needing to individually review each claim then do a phone interview. .

    This and that.....

Got a telemarketing call from a time share salesman last night. Not sure where he was from, but you can always tell it’s a telemarketer when they start off the conversation “what a great day to be talking to you”....OK, here it comes.

I played along for a bit. He asked me what would be the first place I’d visit for fun if I were in Orlando right now. I answered “Urgent Care”. He chuckled, kind of. I think he wanted me to say Disney or Universal. He was associated with either Hilton or Hyatt (can’t remember which one) because he thanked me for my continued loyalty. I let him go on for a while and finally told him that I’d been to Orlando many, many times. I didn’t like it, and wasn’t planning on going back if I could help it. Then the pitch to pick another property as the hotel chain had many throughout the world.

Me...”you have a tough gig in good times. I’m sure it’s particularly hard right now. Do yourself a favor, take off your headset and walk out of your building. Don’t return. Get a job in a fast food driver through window until you figure out a better career choice.” All I got was silence on the other end until several seconds later he said...”OK, thanks!” And hung up.

Had a very frank conversation with my boss yesterday. We’re going through another set of cuts, and he wanted me to furlough 2 more people from my team. Even though I’m a few years from my planned retirement, I’m lucky enough I can pull the trigger now. Ordinarily I’d be willing to ride this out. But, either I’m losing the fortitude, or am worn down from everything that’s happened in my career over the last nearly 40 years....I don’t want to go through this anymore. He totally understood and empathized as he said he’s been asking himself the same questions.

He asked me my time frame, and I thought working until June was something I could live with. He’s going to his boss (President of our division) and HR to come up with some sort of package for me. Probably won’t hear anything until next week. But, my emails and phone calls have eerily and precipitously dropped since that conversation.

Beautiful day in my neck of the woods yesterday. Me and the dog went for a ride and found this little park we walked for an hour or so....

3rd gear in a 5 speed. It’s like the 5 iron in your transmission. Very versatile.

    I don't think I'd want a 5-iron in my transmission.

It takes time to steer an entrenched system like that. But at least in NJ it is all done online (filing, then a phone call). With exception of a required group session where you learn about job hunting, etc. I believe that now though they are suspending that. But hugely backed up with the part of needing to individually review each claim then do a phone interview. .

Up here, Trudeau announced lots of help for those who lost jobs or are otherwise affected by this crisis. Some of the benefits even extend to the self-employed. Basic benefit is (I think) a couple of thou per month for 4 months. I was thinking of applying myself since I consider myself self-employed and thus eligible. I haven't been successfully self-employed, mind you, but hey...

Here I believe you can file online.

To be serious here, only you can answer that, both will do the job it's your preference. Drive your own drive.
