So, I have heard this news for months now, and sort of expected it well before I bought my car. But, I think Kia took a shot at building the best built, most performance focused, highest quality car they could, and the market (aside from me) didn’t respond.

    The COVID-19 issue didn’t help.

    https://www.thedrive.com/news/33178/the-kia-stinger-might-die-for-being-the-best-car-no-one-is-buying

I love it. Now, it looks like I’m going to have a relatively exclusive car.

I think Kia does have a dealership and Kia Finance problem where they are too used to dealing with deadbeats, and people with good credit are not used to being treated that way. It also didn't help that they were too optimistic with unrealistic sticker pricing.

I hope they decide to make an improved generation 2 model but Kia Finance has really soured me.

Can’t comment about Kia finance. Never used them.

So far, the dealership has been fine. But, I haven’t used their service dept for anything, either.

Their sales people are the typical group. Not what you’d find at an Acura, BMW, Audi, etc store. But, probably the equivalent of a Chevy or Ford store. Some are vets, been there a while, but mostly they’re newbies.

Not certain about this as our car sales pros Here have all left us. But, I would imagine the Kia dealerships get the first time sales people and the green peas strictly take ups, demonstrate the cars and turn the “up” over to the sales manager. Those stores, only two things will happen. A) you get the hard sell once the “closer” injects him/her self. Or, B) you get someone who is more than willing to get into the numbers end of it.

My person was B. He wanted to move a car, last day of the sales year, and didn’t even bother doing the grind with me. That said, I was up front with them too. I told them I was a buyer, right now, if they accepted my offer. If not, “thanks for your time”.

He didn’t mess around trying to bump me. He couldn’t approve my offer. But, he got the GM involved and we made the deal.

Interesting to see how Kia, of all brands, came out with a car as eye opening as the Stinger. Totally against type for them. But, since then, although not a sports car, the rest of their lineup has been elevated. The new Soul looks to be a nice car. The Telluride has been a big hit as best I can tell.

If anyone is in the market for a nice SUV, I’d put the Telluride at the top of the list.

My car...only been 4 months, but everything is fine. No squeaks. No rattles. Everything works the way it’s supposed to. It’s comfortable. It’s very fast. It handles better than any other car I’ve ever owned. Gets approving looks wherever I go with it. And, it is a BLAST to drive.

It really should have been the hatchback edition of the Genesis G70. It would have sold better there. A $40K-$55K car at a Kia dealership will not get the proper foot traffic to sell well. You’ll either get the young guys who want to mod it into stupidity. Or, you’ll get the person who really wants it but is over his/her head at financing a Rio.

Still, I applaud Kia for doing the Stinger. Makes me admire the company more than I ever did previously.
My Kia guy was a young greenpea. When I made my offer he had to run to the SM. No tricks or nonsense. The only bump was because I forgot that NY taxes the incentives ($160). But yeah, he was just an order taker.

The 2018 S450 will be a lease return with no payments due because they have a 5 month pull ahead program going on now, which worked out great!

I decided to buy the car because I figured this might be my last car. The financing rate (2.9%) is actually a better interest rate than they have on their E class leases. This way, I own the car.

The car is being brought in from Gainsville and will arrive by Thursday. So I guess I will take delivery on Friday. As long as they show the car as sold, it will qualify for the incentives for April.

Darn, I went away from the computer for a couple of days and voila @Mike has pulled the trigger on a brand new E450 with the gold package. Mike, you make it seem so easy that mere mortals like me have to live vicariously through your innumerable high-end car purchases. In this low interest environment the 2.99% financing is a bit steep but that should be expected for a 6 year loan.

    Congrats, and happy motoring.

    @jipster

Hopefully you never need it, but I witnessed you Accord's crash worthiness the other night (morning). Across the street from my house is a nature preserve. Naturally, there are deer that dart from one side of the road (the nature preserve) to the other (my property) and vise versa. My bedroom window faces the road with the nature preserve across the street. Yesterday morning at about 2:45, my wife and I were woken up by a loud bang. My wife thought it was a clap of Thunder. I said, nope that sounds like a car crash. Sure enough it was. A current body style Honda Accord (Sport) crashed head on into a utility pole. He was telling the cops he swerved to avoid a deer. Front Driver's Side Airbag deployed. He was able to open the driver's door and get out of the car himself.

Glad he was ok. But better off to hit the brakes and the deer. Safer overall.

And cars today really are much better able to handle a head on crash.

Some of those bucks can be big enough to be like hitting a utility pole, in fairness.

This. My wife almost killed us trying to avoid a squirrel. Luckily she didn’t hit anything but it was close.

My driver's ed instructor told us that if we saw a squirrel in the middle of the road that we should hit, back up, and run it over again because it was nothing more than a rat with a fuzzy tail. It was hyperbole, but the point was across that you don't swerve for animals.

We go for a drive about 3 times a week, just to get out but still be able to self isolate. A friend said you shouldn't be doing that. btw, the fine for being too close to someone, strolling in a park or on a golf course, being on a public trail, playing basketball, etc is $830. I checked and technically there is no rule against driving around, but, they are hoping you only drive to pick up groceries, or to a drug store...just essentials. For one thing, if you are in an accident, there will be emergency workers exposed, hospital facilities being used, cops coming to do paperwork etc. Can't even take the car out to charge the battery and blow some carbon out of it!

I saw a Canadian news story where they fined an old guy $880 for taking his dog out to the parking lot alone behind his apartment house so she could do her business. The story implied that some nosey neighbor was ratting everybody out.
I saw that too....and a lady in our city took her dog to an empty golf course across the street from her house. She got the same fine. Those should be at most warnings....with an explanation for the guy with a dog in the apartment...you can't keep a dog isolated!

Deer could get flipped up through the windshield if you hit it.
That happened close by me to someone driving a minivan.

And now for something completely different...

An Ohio man driving a 2016 black Dodge Challenger got a 180-mph speeding ticket on I75 in Michigan. The driver was charged with speeding, not reckless driving, police said. Exceeding the speed limit by at least 16 mph means four points added to a driver’s license.

The fine for exceeding the speed limit by more than 26 mph is $180, officials at 1st District Court in Monroe said.

Some reports doubt that he will be able to negotiate that down to traffic school.

On Inside Edition last night they showed a woman on her way to the hospital to deliver a baby. Don't know whether driver (her mother) was distracted but she crashed the car into a tree as the baby was coming out.

Apparently, the kinetic force of the crash was so great that the baby flew out of the birth canal. Talk about sudden impact.
During the screaming no one could find the baby until the police showed up where they found the baby wedged between the seats with the umbilical cord still attached. Thank goodess the baby, mother and grandmother are fine.

This is certainly not the worst time to be able to sit it out and wait.

I tell my mom the same, she retired at the right time. Retired last year at 70 from 25 years at the same retail store, mostly working in admin roles. She kept working as she claimed she wanted to max out SSI, but I think she really just wanted something to do, and to socialize (and of course some extra money never hurts). They offered her an early retirement, and as she was getting a little tired anyway, took it. She has no regrets, and is glad she can stay home now.

As my son told me just last night....”you must be smart, you got out of the employment chaos at just the right time.”

I know I’m not smart. So, I am indeed lucky! My official retirement date is June 1.

In my professional training we were told never to swerve for cars or animals because You could causing a lot more damage or injury by doing so. If I had to choose between a pole or a deer poor Bambi would be in trouble.

In recent years I’ve had two near misses in the Mustang and one hit in the van.

I think the karma gods are telling my I should have downsized and moved, even if my wife doesn’t want to. Before I could even get the tools out to replace the broken faucet hose, a couple sections of my back fence blew over in the high winds today. Part of it was moving, and I saw when I poked around some posts were rotting (so much for pressure treated), but I hadn’t gotten around to calling the fence guys to come do repairs. They have been called now!

Hopefully the dog doesn’t wander out into the woods now that there is a 20’ opening! I doubt he will. Has some trouble walking now, and don’t think he wants to get far from his food supply!

So, thankfully yesterday NJ reversed the order and opened up the campgrounds for seasonal members like our family. They will be opening next Wednesday.

Obviously, none of the common areas will be open but we can get ours opened and inspected and spend a few days there for a change of scenery.

It's really a relief as as @stickguy mentioned it's crazy windy today. I just noticed our neighbor's tree just lost a limb. I'm sure the campground will lose a few trees today as well. Luckily our lot doesn't have any trees on it, but we do back up to the woods and if a larger tree would come down it could hit us.

IMO, I would really watch the dog or close it off enough so he can't get out. It's a pain, but it would be emotionally hard if the dog wanders off and you can't find him.

Even better to swerve and avoid all obstacles, if you safely can do so. I'll swerve a foot or two for a rabbit if there's no oncoming traffic on an isolated highway. Not going to crash over a rabbit, but maybe give them a fighting chance to fit under the car instead of getting hit by a tire.

    Yes it is.

Now for this story, the other day while is was working from home I took my lunch break. I made a sandwich sat in front of the TV and took a bite or two from it, then the phone rang. I put the sandwich done, got up and answered the phone. It was only a few seconds but when I turned around I saw my dog finishing up my sandwich.

    Hey guys.

Thanks for the video on the 3.0 Duratec @oldfarmer. Hopefully it is indeed bullet proof. It's probably due for a timing chain replacement. Don't.know if I want to open that can of worms. No loud clanking noise like in the video, but sounds like something is going on with that engine.

@driver100 Cars doing great. I ordered some clay bar and detail spray a couple of days ago. I've never. clayed in my life, but if this paint job is going to last 35 years...I'll need to start asap. ;-) A friend clayed a bit for me the other day, smooooth. The Honda tech still hasn't gotten back with me yet.Enjoy taking joy rides again, and I'm not sure, but some ladies were either checking me out the other day...or my car. :open_mouth:

@nyccarguy ....Good to hear the Accord held up in a bad wreck. We live near a wooded area, and it's not uncommon for deer to be hit near the entrance to our subdivision. Was out driving around with my wife last evening, she mentioned deer as a hazard, saying it was "mating season"....pretty sure that's in the fall....but think she was tired of driving around and just wanted to go home.

Ahhh, cute kids @venture. Looks like the t-rex has gotten the drop on the gigantic giraffe. ;-)

My ‘90 Civic survived a deer crash. It ran diagonally across the road at twilight — never saw it. Fortunately it kind of bounced off the car — damage to front fender and headlight but nothing major.

While still in stay-at-home mode, the other day I recorded a documentary made just last year titled "Gordon Lightfoot: If You Could Read My Mind", about the Canadian singer-songwriter of the same name. He is still around and performing even though he is north of 80 years old now. I think it is one of the best biographies I have ever seen, at least for the first 85% or so (I found the end a bit of a fizzle), even though I wouldn't call myself a huge Lightfoot fan. Every Canadian of a certain age grew up with his songs and yet this revealed a whole bunch of stuff about him I didn't know. It was especially interesting at the beginning where it delved into his time before he became really well-known. That section was a great look back at Toronto and even a bit of NYC in the '60s, fascinating. I recommend it.

Haven't thought about him in a very long time. Great songwriter and lyricist. College girlfriend LOVED him, so for a couple of years, I was bombarded with his music, given she didn't much care for my Talking Heads, Stevie Ray Vaughn regiment at the time.

Have to look up the documentary. Good he's still plying his craft.

Not sure what transpired that got this thread closed. I've been around a while, and it's been a long, long time since I've seen a thread closed. Glad to see it's back open, again!

Chalk this up to having too much time on my hands. Mentioned previously that I'm looking to downsize and am looking for a new house. That meant "sprucing up" my current abode to get it ready to put on the market. Bathrooms and kitchens are what sell houses, right after good curb appeal (landscaping) and good mechanicals.

My bathroom floors were already heated, but I ripped out the vanities, mirrors, painted and ended up with this. It reminds me of why home remodeling was not a career choice for me.

Looks nice. Like you, we have upward pointing lights (very similar), and they don't work very well. It's amazingly hard to find that style, with the shades pointing down.

Most lights like that you can mount either way, whatever your preference is.

Surprisingly, most can't. Though, the person at the lighting store will insist they can. (experience)

Yes....Framberg. And no, not my beauty products. Those would be the GFs. The calk gun and calk/silicon tubes are mine, though.

Ab, I saw Gord Lightfoot in a coffee house in Edmonton before he became really famous. Not really my thing, but an incredible voice especially live.
GG Looks great. Our light fixtures in Florida were dated and cheap. Really like LCDs, bright white lighting and they last for 1000s of hours before replacing.

    @graphicguy,
I thought I recognized the light construction.
By beauty products, I actually meant the tubes of caulk. ;)

    Looks good @graphicguy!

We are looking at busy week.

Packing all the stuff to open up down the shore and need to get some shopping done as well.

I had 8 ton of stone delivered to spruce up our lot, new shed and a half cord of firewood being delivered on Friday.

Just need to build a firewood rack, found a few pretty easy ones on the web.

It was a plain peanut butter sandwich, you could imagine the dog eating it.

Last week I looked through a 1984 issue of the MBCA magazine "The Star". There was a 300SL roadster for something like 35K. Not easy to find something that has appreciated better than real estate in my area.

Nice floors in that bathroom, gg.

I recall hearing Gordon Lightfoot on the radio when I was younger, as CRTC regulations put it on the air a lot on the Canadian stations I could tune into. I remember the stories about "Black Day in July" being banned, and a radio host calling him "Four Chord Gord".

For anyone following that Barn Find story of the 1960 MB 300SL Roadster last month, it has been sold. Business Insider reports "that it went for the full asking price" of $1.095 million. Apparently no quibbles about the exterior and interior color changes.
