TY - how did you do solar? Everyone wants to put solar on my roof for nothing then lease them to me. I wonder what the real cost would be to own them? Get one of Elon Musk's upcoming house battery and you could have no electric bill - just the electric company having to pay you. It you try Solar City or the other gaggle of companies out there there's a flat monthly lease payments which then start to go up.
The idea really appeals to me and the house is close to a perfect due south.
Fezo, I used Trinity Solar for ours. At the time (this is 3 years ago now), they gave me 3 choices. 1) I let them put up the panels at no cost to me and I buy the electricity from them at a rate quite a bit lower than the power company was charging. 2) I pay $7k up front for free electricity for the life of the panels but they own them. 3) I pay ... I think it was $25k to buy the whole thing and they provide free service for ... I forget if it was 10 years or 20 years.
At that time, the SRECs produced by the system were selling for $600+ here in NJ. My system was rated to produce nearly 9 SRECs per year. So I figured with the $5400 income plus electricity savings, I'd be in the black in just a few years. So that's the way I went. Sadly, the market crashed not long after because of the extremely high rate of installs. I got to sell maybe 3-4 SRECs at more than $600. Since then, I've been averaging around $200. Oh well. These things happen. Figure I'm still saving a couple grand a year in electricity plus another couple grand in the SREC sales. So it will pay for itself eventually.
Oh, there was another option. I could have bought the system up front but signed over my SRECs to them at a set rate. I forget what it was, but it was far below the market at that time, but I'm pretty sure it was still quite a bit above the current market. Hindsight. Sigh.

Well Aaron Hernandez was found guilty. Why isn't that a headline at nfl.com?
Because it's a headline just about everywhere else! Besides, why would the NFL want to publicize the fact that one of its active players took part in a murder? No, they're not stupid - but definitely too "smart" for their own good!
For quite a few weeks in this month, there was a question as to whether or not he would be found guilty of murder and that he just "happened to be at the murder scene" and witnessed the murder. At least that was what his attorneys hoped they could prove. I guess it didn't work. This case will be in the appeals process for many, many years.

Oh I realize that. The NFL has done a great job of making sure it's in the positive headlines 52 weeks a year but it does a terrible job of acknowledging their shortcomings.

I just called Virgin Mobile. I do like their customer friendly way.....Just hang in there while we transfer your call, and for example in the user guide they say "Here is all the boring legal stuff".
Got through pretty quickly and the nice young lady said I can take the phone back within 7 days and pick up a new one if it doesn't hold a charge (mine was for just 6 hours). Today is day 7, friendly Radio Shack didn't mention if I had a problem bring it back within 7 days. They made it sound like I am the moron because their stupid phone doesn't work.
We'll see what happens....this salesguy who spends most of his time rolling his eyes and yawning won't be too happy to see me again............
Driver, I know you for many years now. I've read your posts with interest (and some anxiety at times), but one thing I know about you is that you won't stand for maltreatment from a company or an employee.
If this same guy is at the store when you go in, walk up to him and "roll YOUR eyes" and mention to him, "...so you're still here, huh?"

I went back and the shlub wasn't there...probably got terminated. This guy was really nice and very helpful. As soon as he picked up my phone he said it was really hot. He took off the back and could hardly get the card thing out because it was so hot...he thought it might be fried. He said he could get me another phone, but, he recommended a Sony for $10 more. Tried to talk me into a monthly plan, but when I explained I only use the phone for 10 minutes a month for 7 months he backed off.
I took the phone back twice before and both times the shlub thought the hot phone was normal. Our house could have burned down. I have to set the phone up with the carrier and try for bluetooth....we'll see what happens.
This salesguy was really nice and is earning his minimum wages. This took half an hour, the total time spent now is probably one hour for a $100 sale....what is the profit on that? Hard way to make a buck.....when you consider the expenses.
Your right Mike about one thing........I'll never give up. I have a friend who signs his emails this way, "Often daunted, never defeated" I love that signature....wish I could have it.

The NFL is not a non-profit organization. Rather it is a tax exempt organization and has been since 1944. It became a trade organization in the 1960's and the NHL, PGA, LPGA are also tax exempt as they, like the NFL, are all trade associations like the AMA, US Chamber of Commerce. MLB gave up their tax exempt status in order to shield the salaries of their executives from public scrutiny.
Keep in mind, only the NFL central office in New York is a 501(c)(6) organization. The 32 teams, the NFL Network, NFL Films, et al are all for profit companies and file and pay taxes. The NFL Office is merely a pass through that takes their $10 billion in revenue and gives it to the teams. The teams do pay dues to the League Office but in 2012 the NFL was $304 million in the red due to mortgages the NFL has made to the teams for stadium improvement.

Oh it was the concept professional sports being pawned off as a trade organization that struck me as so ludicrous. They aren't. They are a legal cartel. Revoking their tax exempt status wouldn't generate much revenue. Anyway, some congress members are intent on revoking it.

Hi Fezo. We purchased ours outright through Costco of all places, who partnered with Rec Solar, which is now part of Sunrun. After four quotes we found Costco saved us $2000 out of pocket for a similar size. Here are the things to decide: 1. Size of system in kW per hour capacity. 2. Own or lease. 3. Installer style. 4. Location of panels. 5. Type and location of inverter.
We didn't want to lease since we want the maximum financial benefit and we don't want a lease contract becoming a turnoff if we sell the house later. Our payback is expected to be less than 8 years.
We chose 4.75 kWh to cover our needs based on predicted usage. The number of panels will then depend on the panel capacity and their efficiency. There's a lot of variance. We refused any panels from China. Shop carefully in this regard and compare, compare, compare. We also chose panels with a black frame.
For the installer, we required them to hide the conduit and junction boxes. You'll see many installs with unsightly conduit running along the roof. Ours are all tucked under the panels.
We chose a single inverter with individual panel optimizers. These shut off one panel at a time when hit with a shadow instead of the whole array. Micro inverters for each panel are another good option. We put the inverter in the garage to protect it. Micro inverters and optimizers are installed on the panel underside.

Revoking the tax exempt status will make for a nice dog and pony show for a few politicians. All the league will do is become an LLC, pass through any income or loss to the teams, and still not pay any tax.

Good god. I couldn't answer most of those even after owning the system. haha.
My inverters are in my garage. That's about all I got. Oh, and its a 6.0 kW system.

Some of them, yes. The GX, which I recommended, is related to the Toyota 4Runner, which is quite off-road capable.
I always thought their rugged off-road vehicle was the LX (related to the Toyota Land Cruiser). I found that the GX was a bit top-heavy whereby the LX was more stable, more rugged, and handled better off road. I used to sell them, as you know. and many customers who were true off-road lovers (down here in Florida, they loved to used them in the Everglades for fishing and hunting as well as in the Keys) always chose the LX or the Land Cruiser. The GX was the favorite among the women drivers who drove the kids to school, soccer games and practice, etc.
The LX and Land Cruiser are very expensive vehicles, well over $85,000 when nicely equipped. But the LX and Land Cruiser are always compared to the Land Rover when discussing off road capabilities.
Suydam, true off-roaders are very particular about the vehicles they drive, as I am sure you know. Of all the vehicles I used to sell, the Lexus LX, Toyota Land Cruiser and the earlier version of the Infiniti QX56 were the most popular down here in FL. Land Rover was not as popular because of their inconsistent reliability - issues that continue to haunt them up to this day, from what I have been told.
4X4's are not as popular down here for regular on road use - no snow or ice. But for off-roading, of course.
True, but this question from poster was for an SUV for her mom who is a realtor who mainly wants a lux ride and the ability to occasionally take clients over back roads to a showing. Not exactly a true off roader. And my point was some GC owners are in that category too.

No argument here. I was just commenting from my experiences the kinds of vehicles true off-roaders are attracted to.
For that poster who was asking for help or a recommendation for someone in the real estate business, any vehicle that can handle up to 5 passengers (2 buyers and some children) would be fine. A Lexus GX is kind of pricey, but realtors have to drive vehicles that reflect their so called "success"! I agree - a nice Jeep would do just fine.
so, per the sunrun website, I generated 6,448 kwh over the past year. Its underperforming. Lots of snow this winter, though. I dunno. Anyhooo... divided by 365 days = 17.67. Through Nov, Dec, and Jan, the system looks to have been about 40% under projections. June-July was right on target and produced about 29.5 per day.
I guess Colorado gets much more sun than NJ.

Welcome to my world; back in 1990 I spent several months researching CD players before I finally pulled the trigger- D/A converters, jitter, you name it, I researched it. I ended up with a Rotel RCD-855; it still sounds great 25 years later.

But that fits right in with a lot of big colleges subsidizing their sports programs out of fees and charges the general student population pays. Not to mention the big spending on scholarships for jocks instead on people who can major in physics and chemistry.
I have friends with beautiful Grand Cherokees whose idea of rough roads are the side roads around the mall.
This is the use model that gets most of them sold/leased.
People who actually use 4WD or AWD, even on low-clearance vehicles, are measured in the hundreds. Those who use what the Jeep vehicles are designed for are measured in the dozens.

So, driver, does your phone now have a battery that lasts more than 6-10 hours on stand-by? Or did you procure a totally different phone with your carrier, Virgin?

I went back to Radio Shack - got an excellent employee, told him Virgin said I could have a new phone. I asked for an upgrade phone...he said a Sony Xperia E1 would cost $10 more = $100. Being the big spender I am I went for the Sony. Sales guy said the back of the Hauwei that I brought back was pretty hot....opened it and couldn't touch it...thought it might have fried my card thing. Fortunately, it was still OK. The Sony is 10X better than the Hauwei (pronounced Woway) and it should last a lot longer. It had 60% power at 11:30 a.m. and 30% at 9 p.m. so I think it will be fine.
For $100 the reviews say this phone is a good value. It is a smart phone, but being cheap the camera is weak, controls are a little clunky, but, overall a great little phone. It can get wi-fi and it hooked up to Bluetooth easily. It does what I want to do. $100 a year for prepaid calls, 30 cents a minute to use, but I only use it for 10 minutes a week max., probably average 2 min a week...for 7 months of the year.
This phone is smaller, more solid, visuals and controls are much better. My wife paid about $300 for a phone 4 years ago, she didn't like the Hauwei, but she said this phone is comparable to hers.
I am a happy camper....or, I guess caller.
What a difference, I took the phone back to the first guy twice and he kept saying there was nothing wrong with the phone....but he should have known there is a pretty high failure rate....so, the carrier allows you to take it back within 7 days. Like I say, probably spent an hour and a quarter to sell a $100 item, no wonder RS is having problems.
Driver, a loss of 30% charge on a battery that is on stand-by in just 10 hours is quite a chunk of power. If I have 100% charge at 8:00 AM and just lay it on my desk for 10 hours, it would use up 5% of my original charge - no more. If I used my fully charged phone and made 2 hours worth of calls, it would use about 15% of my charge.
So so a phone that uses 30% of its charge just sitting idle is a pretty big drain.

That could be...it probably used a lot of power getting set up etc. I don't think we really will know until it is fully charged - which it is this morning - and now I have to see how long it lasts.
It isn't perfect.....for example if you accidentally press the button on the side you get Sony music and it starts playing music. I have a learning curve ahead of me.
Like I say, it will sit idle 99.999% of the time, so as long as it lasts a day while on I will be fine. I see all kinds of things you can do with it so I can see where one could become "addicted" to their cell phone.
driver, I believe once you come out of your learning curve with the smart phone, I believe you will slowly become addicted to the technology available to simplify your life more (if that is possible knowing you all these years).
This reminds me of when I finally got into motor cycling in my 30's. I started with a Honda Scooter to use to ride to work in the summers. I found it too slow. So I traded it 4 weeks later for a Honda 250 cycle. I thought to myself, "...hey, this is awesome!" So after getting my motor cycle license, I opted for a trade up to a Honda Nighthawk 750. I loved that bike. It was stolen from outside a grocery market. How they did that in 20 minutes without a hey still baffles me. I then bought a Honda 1000 custom cruising bike with 10 speeds (5 regular and 5 with overdrive). I had so much fun with that bike until my wife said, "...it's either me or the bike - one of them has to go!" That was the end of my marriage - nah, just kidding - I sold the bike for only $500 less than I paid for it 2 years prior.
I I still miss the wind in my face and the total feeling of exhileration and freedom from the stress of the world when I was on that bike.
I could have saved quite a bit of money if I had gone straight to a full size cruising bike instead of taking those baby steps to my final stage of happiness - my Honda 1000 Custom Cruiser. You too will find this out once you get into the true smartphone technology.
Are turn signals standard equipment on pickup trucks or are they optional? Sheesh!
It depends how high the truck has been raised.
Once the truck gets past a certain height, they throw away the turn signals and equip it with headlights that could illuminate the dark side of the moon.

That is one of my biggest pet huge peeves...I call it false economizing or as our ancestors said...being penny wise and pound foolish. Someone tries to save money by taking the cheap way out. Our multi-millionaire friend did that, has an accountant who isn't really an accountant and has a bargain priced lawyer....both of them cend up costing him more than if he just hired a qualified professional in the first place.
Then there is the SIL repaing a 20 year old Volvo for $4000, transmission job. Then he sells the car to his son for $2000. Then within a few months the car needs a $2000 motor. I haven't seen the Volvo and I don't know if it is still around. I told the grandson to lease a car, he is a full accountant and works for a major firm. He takes after his da, he's going to try to live without a car and commute to work. I wonder what his boss will think when he is sent out to a site to do some work, and he has to take the bus? My daughter is driving my 2004 X3 (she's the breadwinner these days) and it probably has close to 200k miles on it and I am sure isn't that roadworthy these days. Claims he will lease a car for her in a few months.......why do today what you can put off until tomorrow.
So, yeh, I know all about false economizing. But, I see the phone as part of a learning curve. For $100 I'll see how I like it before I go further. A year ago I bought a Galaxy 10 and I hate it. I'll keep you posted on how my phone and I get along.
The NFL has the same problem that some automakers have: Deniers Disease. Don't lie to the American public when there's too much public evidence already against you.

78.43% don't use their turn signals...unless it has ladder racks then it shoots to 97.82%. (I made that up, but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm close).
We'll, Driver, I made it through Canadian customs using the infamous Ambassador bridge. The Canadian guards harassed me a bit, but no biggie, they just questioned my intentions, honesty, and honor A friendly piece of advice to any border guards reading this: when you ask a technical manager a technical question, don't be surprised when you get a technical response.
The construction along that route is insane like you mentioned, but badly needed to handle all that traffic. I just returned home to Colorado last night with no issues. For the drive between London and Detroit (that sounds weird), I picked up a rental VW Jetta with the 1.8 liter turbo motor. Great power plant and quiet interior. Awful transmission, suspension, and steering. The thing had Louisiana license plates, so you can believe I followed the letter of the law. Talk about being a target of police.
The Henry Ford center was amazing. I went into the museum expecting a history on Ford and came away with an education on Americana. Farm implements, cars from many makes, trains, planes, household items, a working historic diner. It had everything. Then I toured the Ford Rouge plant and watched the new F-150 being assembled. Being an operations guy I watched in fascination soaking up the details like the parts supply process, how the tooling is arranged, minimized footsteps, custimization, quality control, and systems for orienting the vehicle to the best height for the workers. It's a pretty smooth process, but definitely repetitive for the workers.
Tyguy, that is an amazing experience. I took the tour a few years back when I was up there and it was great then - but I can imagine now with the new F150 being built up there in aluminum.
The best corporate/manufacturing tour I've ever been on was at the Olympic Brewery in Olympia, Washington. I wonder if it had anything to do with the end of the tour when you get to sample all their products.
Had the same kind of "high"light experience in Temecula, CA at the Calloway Vinyard. Lunch out on the veranda with samples of all the wines they made as you looked out over the vineyards.
Too bad they don't do that at the Ford Rouge Tour. Pick your color and equipment and drive it home. Now that would be memorable!

On Tuesday a truck caught on fire on the Ambassador Bridge, did you see that Ty?
I think he said he was cut off by a VW Jetta with Louisiana plates.
It has been a number of years since I saw the Henry Ford Museum, but it is a neat thing to see. The F-150 line sounds like it would be fascinating. Did you have to prebook or just go?
Glad the trip went well.......you don't see too many Jetta rental cars...especially with a Turbo engine.

Hindsight. Sigh.

I have a friend who signs his emails this way,

I love that signature....wish I could have it.

Hope that helps.

The LX and Land Cruiser are very expensive vehicles, well over $85,000 when nicely equipped. But the LX and Land Cruiser are always compared to the Land Rover when discussing off road capabilities.

4X4's are not as popular down here for regular on road use - no snow or ice. But for off-roading, of course.

6 kW is a larger system. Very nice. Any idea how much you generate on a good day? Right now we're topping out at 4kW and a bit over 30 kWh per day.
I guess Colorado gets much more sun than NJ.

This is the use model that gets most of them sold/leased.
People who actually use 4WD or AWD, even on low-clearance vehicles, are measured in the hundreds. Those who use what the Jeep vehicles are designed for are measured in the dozens.

So so a phone that uses 30% of its charge just sitting idle is a pretty big drain.
2024 Genesis G90 Super-Charger
It isn't perfect.....for example if you accidentally press the button on the side you get Sony music and it starts playing music. I have a learning curve ahead of me.
Like I say, it will sit idle 99.999% of the time, so as long as it lasts a day while on I will be fine. I see all kinds of things you can do with it so I can see where one could become "addicted"
I am hoping this won't happen.

You too will find this out once you get into the true smartphone technology.

pethuge peeves...I call it false economizing or as our ancestors said...being penny wise and pound foolish.
