Slightly disappointing but ultimately hardly earth-shaking experience with car infotainment this week.

My cell provider had a Black Friday deal going on some phones. I had gotten an iPhone 7 from them 3 years ago which worked fine for me, but I recognize that it is older tech and several generations behind what Apple is now making. The cell provider was offering an iPhone 11 at $20/mo x 24 mos., or the current iPhone SE for $15/mo x 24. I decided to get an 11 but by the time I called they had sold out and weren't getting any more stock. So I reluctantly decided to get the SE. It was still a good deal and except for the camera being a bit basic, the tech is going to be up to date for a few years.

This was all done over the phone and in these COVID times they offered free delivery for me to set it up myself. That wasn't too hard and I even managed to not screw up swapping the SIM card from the older phone to this one. Took a couple of hours to get everything transferred and set up but it is quite amazing how everything seemed identical once it was done. The next time I was out in the ATS I set CUE up to recognize it and all was well. One of the things I was interesting in checking out was wireless charging. This phone supports it (my old one did not) and in the ATS the charging pad is behind the flip-up touchscreen in the cubby that hides there.

I immediately discovered that it is a good thing I didn't get the 11 as it would not fit there. This one just barely does. I set it on the pad and... nothing happened. I got out the owners manual and they didn't discuss it much but did say that if it doesn't work, rotate the phone 180 degrees and try again. Still no go. I thought that the cheap silicone case I had for the 7 and transferred to the SE might be the problem and so I removed it and tried again. Nope. I shut everything off, turned things on, tried again and lo and behold, for a split-second I saw the indicator that it was working light up, but it quickly flicked off and nothing would bring it back. At that point I quit and came back inside.

After a bit I decided to go online to Cadillac forums and find out the experience of others. I quickly learned that it does not work with iPhones. Apparently whatever tech GM used in 2017 is not compatible with what Apple adopted even though they both use the same standard, and while it works with other types of devices, it does not with iPhones. But, you can spend a couple of hundred bucks for the 2.0 version of the charging module they now use, which does work with iPhones, but you have to disassemble the center stack of the dash to install it. Uh, no. So I concluded that in-car wireless charging is not something I'll use for now and the cable that I have in the car will work just fine.

That kind of nonsense is why I stick with a Trac phone and charge it once a week at home.

Tracfone here. Samsung Galaxy S7 derivative. J7.
My 14 Malibu has Bluetooth, but I've never tried to connect to it because I rarely, almost never, talk on the phone in the car. I may text occasionally if I'm stopped, and I may read the text messages.

I know that the maps or screen won't transfer to my screen with the cubby behind it like AB348's Caddy has.

I have a USB cable from the armrest for charging if needed, only used on longer trips since my phone holds a charge for a long period. Wife and I never seem to have trouble with both of us needing to charge. She plays games on her J7 so sometimes plugs it in. I have two other convenience plugs for cables into the cigarette lighters and I have a 110 plug in for the wall plug on the charger. What more could a man want?

    It was Mrs Ds birthday, we were going to go out to a restaurant with a heated patio but when the temperature is 30F those heaters don't help. I remembered there was a gourmet take-out place about 15 minutes away. He posts a different menu each day, he is a professional chef, they also do catering for events. You can call and pick up your food or go in and see it and choose your dishes. The prices are reasonable considering it is truly gourmet food. Here is a partial list of the items....it would be 20 or 30% less in U.S. Ds;
    Masala Rubbed Salmon – $19
    Mango Chutney Jumbo Shrimp (4) – $16
Perogies with Onion, Cheddar & Sour Cream (10) – $17
Chicken Breast with Shiitaki Mushroom Jus – $18
Korean BBQ Chicken (Breast Meat) – $18
Jamaican Style Curried Goat (Local) – $24
Coconut Curried Elk & Cremini Mushrooms – $19
Beverly Creek Beef Ribs with Rosemary Jus – $24
    Elk Meatloaf – $19
Confit of Duck (Beamsville) – $19
    Desserts – $6
Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding with Butterscotch Cream
    Pomegranate, Raspberry Cheesecake
    Death by Chocolate Brownie
    Hazelnut Tart
    Caramelized Apple Tatin
    Hazelnut, Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Cake

The food was truly gourmet quality. If you ever know of such a place give it a try, it is a great concept for having a gourmet meal for a very medium price.

Speaking of cars I couldn’t identify, I passed an accident today. There is a two lane ramp onto I-87 with one side branching off north and the other south. A common problem is when clueless people in one lane decide they need to be in the other and don’t look before switching lanes. This is what must have happened.

A Red Chevy possible a Cruse was sitting in the right lane with the driver’s front tire knocked off. A small SUV of unknown type was upside down in the left lane resting against the guardrail. Two women had crawled out the windows and were being given blankets by good Samaritan’s. It looked like an older woman was in the Chevy. I don’t think she was hurt.

The police arrived at the same time so I didn’t stop.

Although I didn’t see the accident happen I can make a guess. Around here people have the habit of making left turns onto double lane roads and swing wide into the far right lane without looking or signaling. It’s so common that I am always extra careful when making such a left before moving right as they often try to fly by on the right. I wonder if this was the result of two drivers turning from opposite directions and switching lanes.

They are in Canadian dollars. I usually use hamburgers in a medium priced restaurant as a guide for what prices should be.........these days a hamburger and French fries or sub a salad is a minimum of $14 in Canada, often $15 or $16 and can be $20 to $22 in a more expensive place.

To answer Mikes question.....I don't know how the food we ate could have been one bit better....it was as good as could be.

I have been dieting since I realized I've gained 4-5 pounds, so ALL of that menu looks great to me.

That kind of nonsense is why I stick with a Trac phone and charge it once a week at home.

Wife and I never seem to have trouble with both of us needing to charge. She plays games on her J7 so sometimes plugs it in. I have two other convenience plugs for cables into the cigarette lighters and I have a 110 plug in for the wall plug on the charger. What more could a man want?

I’ve been spoiled by my 2 Series; everything streams wirelessly and with Siri Eyes Free I’m able to receive and send texts without taking my eyes off the road. That’s not possible in the Clubman or X1, but at least they both have decent BT connectivity.
The reason I like to be able to access and respond to texts is because a lot of the texts are work related.

A couple of months ago I decided to try a bison ribeye and compare it to the old fashioned beef ribeye. IIRC, the bison cost 1 1/2 times as much. Did a side-by-side taste test and my taste buds could not tell one iota of difference. But, my wallet could easily tell the difference. No more bison for me.

    Why I can never have a beater(continued)
I noticed that the 3rd brake light on the Clubman was out. It’s an LED strip so all you can do is replace it. Fortunately it’s not very expensive so I ordered one from Cincinnati Mini’s online parts store. It’s a dead easy fix- 8 Torx bolts, one connector and it snaps right out, all in 20-30 minutes tops.

Sounds good to me even if I haven’t heard of half of that stuff. Gotta be better than ordering frozen steaks from those Omaha steak places (which I have never done). But a few years ago when I was working I was surprised at how many dopes that I worked with did that as a New Years Eve family tradition.

I'm going to place an order before they get booked up! Isolating won't be too bad!

Sounds good to me even if I haven’t heard of half of that stuff. Gotta be better than ordering frozen steaks from those Omaha steak places (which I have never done). But a few years ago when I was working I was surprised at how many dopes that I worked with did that as a New Years Eve family tradition.

Sports has been weird this year. Obviously, I’m not the only one who views it that way. Even the Cincinnati Reds, being in the playoffs, given I couldn’t go to Great American Ballpark, didn’t cut it for me.

Don’t care about the NFL. I couldn’t even tell you who’s playing whom, or if ANY of the teams are any good.

Same with college ball. People around here are usually “ga-ga” over Ohio State (as a Miami University alum, I can take or leave Ohio State). This year? People are pretty ambivalent.

Maybe things will begin to get back to normal for March Madness. Until then, sports around the country seem to be underwhelming.

I haven’t followed football nearly as much this year as I normally do. Part of it being I’ve been super busy on the weekends with the new house, the other you can’t really go to the bar to watch the game or have a bunch of friends over to watch with you.

I think I've mentioned this before, but my son in CA is an Eagles fan. I asked him about the team this season, but he told me he hasn't been following football much this season, either.

Just awful. Wentz is not good. Never was. It is like they got into a bad lease and have to ride it out. lol.

But, like I said before, my son's Giants are looking better and better as the season progresses. It appears they should finish 7-9. Still a losing record, and they'll still get crushed in the postseason, but at least they can claim the division title. They won me $30 yesterday, so I'm rooting for them. ;b

At least you don't have to hate the Patriots anymore! Unlikely any playoff team in the AFC will have to go through the Pats this season.

You don’t know what a lamb chop or shrimp is? :sunglasses:
Not accompanied the way they described them. 😗

    Almonds? Mango?

I thought you were a worldly guy, j? I'm so disappointed to learn otherwise.
    Pittsburgh...
I couldn’t have said it better myself. All meat and potatoes around here and of course winning NFL football most of the time.

About the Steelers, true but only recently. The team with the most regular season wins is the Bears with almost 140 more wins than Pittsburg (but playing a dozen more seasons). Then the Packers, then the Giants, with Pittsburg coming in fourth.

    Here is the New Years menu which at $50 Cdn p.p. would be about $35 each U.S.D., and you get 2 of each;
2020 New Year’s Eve Hors D’ Oeuvres Party To Go

Phyllo Shell with Smoked Cheddar & Apple Jelly
    Masala Rubbed Chicken Satay
    Petite Bouchee with Cambozola Cheese
Spice Seared Ahi Tuna Sashimi with Lime & Pickled Cucumber
Lamb Rack Chop with Almond Pesto
    Mango Chutney Glazed Jumbo Shrimp
Naan with Cremini Mushroom, Aged Brie & Truffle Oil
Chocolate Pink Peppercorn & Raspberry Square

** 2 of each of the above per person **

    $50 Per Person plus tax
I'm going to place an order before they get booked up! Isolating won't be too bad!

Sounds good to me even if I haven’t heard of half of that stuff. Gotta be better than ordering frozen steaks from those Omaha steak places (which I have never done). But a few years ago when I was working I was surprised at how many dopes that I worked with did that as a New Years Eve family tradition.

Did what? Eat at expensive restaurants or ordered frozen steaks?
Both, eating frozen steaks at expensive restaurants.
