Whatever it is, it's likely to make more sense than what has been happening anywhere else, particularly California. They've been locked down tight lately and to a lesser extent for the past nine months, while Florida has been pretty much business as usual. The numbers tell the story.

I trust you appreciate where you are, but I'm pretty sure you do. The poor sods in California, not so much.

My son and 2 grandsons live in the Coachella Valley of Southern California (near Palm Springs, Indian Wells, La Quinta). The 20 year old has all but given up on a baseball career due to the collegiate shutdown of most sports at his level. He’s been taking online courses at home from his college. The 16 year old who has Aspergers is stagnating but luckily he is gifted in computers and gaming. What he critically needs is SOCIAL INTERACTION with peers which he is not getting.

My don is a personal trainer and his business has suffered terribly. But at least they are away from cities and the spread of the virus is not as bad where they live as it is in LA, SF, SD, etc.

Got an email from our homeowners association yesterday informing all residents who are 65 years of age or older that the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine will be administered to those residents who call a specified phone number and leave a message with name, address, phone number and age beginning this coming Monday at 9:00 AM. That is sure convenient!

Got another email this morning assuring those residents who responded via phone or email that we would be contacted in the next 24-48 hours with two appointments - one for the initial inoculation and one 28 days later for the second inoculation.

It seems that 8 Broward and Palm Beach County senior self-contained communities have been identified by the governor as being initial points of inoculation due to the heavy concentration of 65+ residents. It’s open only to residents of those 8 gated communities. Our gated community has 5500 full time and snowbird residents.

Be careful that it’s not a scam to get your personal info.

Up here the state has a strangle hold on the vaccine and is cutting out all the county health departments who normally tend to this kind of stuff. All the politicians are jumping the line and blaming the feds for the resultant mess. Sad to see dirty politics get injected into a pandemic.

So an idjit posts on a Stinger FB page the following:

Yo I was doin donuts last night and the car shut off completely, then after starting it. It was making a weird grinding noise?
Anyone ever had this problem? And no I didn’t hit anything

I helped out with this response:
You might have thrown off the calibration of the knuter valve. It resets itself overnight so you are likely fine.

Now to see if he takes the bait...

Wait, don't you need a gonculator to reset a knuter valve?
He probably just broke his Johnson rod. ;)

No question about it! I am blessed in some ways to be living in the State of Florida. Climate (8 months of the year), low taxes, low cost of living, away from big cities, and now, access to a needed vaccine.

I am very concerned about the virus variants (mutations) that may be unaffected by the existing vaccines. Also, if you’ve had the original virus, can you get one of the variant viruses?

It is becoming more obvious to me that this virus was created in a lab rather than a naturally occurring virus. What happens if this virus is incapable of being neutralized due to a myriad of variants and mutations? I hope and pray there is an end to all this madness.

Think of how far behind the children of this country will be due to inconsistent or lacking educational experiences. As a former educator I can tell you that online learning for young children is a waste of time and money. The average child has lost at least two years mental growth due to this shutdown of the educational system. Only the gifted and bright kids will survive.

I am obviously pessimistic about resolving this gap.
Be very careful of voicing your theories about viral origins. There are forces that will come after you for ‘Wrongthink’. I made the same speculation in the comments section of a YouTube video and my account was suddenly suspended. No explanation given.

A while back we had a discussion about capacitors.
Here is an example of how not to connect one(40 second video).

Funny.....as RB would say....”IDJIT”. Just finished putting new caps in the turntable. I’m hoping to have it finished today, or at the latest, tomorrow. That is, if all my work proves to be good. Don’t place any bets on that, though.

With all this classic equipment talk, I looked up my old Dual turntable on ebay. One was offered for nearly $250. I should start looking for a local store that buys classic stuff. I hate trying to sell something on Ebay.

I was inventorying my old equipment the other day (counting the receivers) and saw my old turntable. Still in the box. Technics SLQD33. Wonder what that's worth? I assume it still works (it was in perfect condition when I packed it up years ago).

Took my Stinger to the dealership (not the purchasing dealership) yesterday to get the recall for engine fire fixed. New Dealership is called Cronin. They’re a little ways from me (35 minutes), but nice.

I was ready to go apoplectic on them when they told me the repair would take longer than expected, and they closed at 1. Then they said they’d give me a loaner. So, I was OK with that.

This would never have happened at my purchasing dealership (Wyler), who said they would not be able to fix my recall for 5 weeks. I shouldn’t have been surprised, given the principal also owns the Cadillac dealership where things went very awry. Come to find out, the service director also manages their Kia, Nissan and Cadillac service depts. He’s pretty much worthless, obviously.

Anyway, https://www.croninkia.com/ also owns a Ford Dealership next door. While the Kia service writer was finding me a loaner, I started to wander over to the Ford store. Had to go look. The only thing they had that peaked my curiously was a Mustang GT that had an MSRP of $37K. Equipped just the way I liked it, save for the automatic. Nothing frivolous....just a V8 and the standard equipment. Sales guy asked me if I wanted to take it for a spin. I told him that would be a literal “spin” given it was spitting frozen rain at the time.

Came back to the Kia store and they had a Telluride waiting for me as a loaner. WOW...these things are quite nice. I’m assuming it’s a base model as it didn’t have the fancy wheels or the huge LCD screen. Still, I can see where it would give a Tahoe, Explorer, 4 Runner, etc a run for the money. Didn’t have a sticker on it. So, not sure what it would list for.

Given Kia service is closed today, tomorrow and Sunday, looks like I’ve got a pretty decent loaner for the weekend.

Tell us all about the ride, Telluride. Sorry, a little humor, very little. Though do tell us your observations with it. Happy New Year everyone, to a tremendously better 2021!
I’ll qualify this by saying my Stinger doesn’t ride harshly, and most of the time, it rides comfortably. But, it’s a sports hatch. And, it rides firmer than the Telluride. It has better steering, better brakes and certainly better acceleration.

The Telluride rides better, in every way. It smooths out harsh roads. It doesn’t pitch and roll like just about every other 2 ton + SUV/Truck I’ve ever driven. It stays planted on the road. It’s seats are “cushy”. It’s not slow, but it’s not quick either. I guess I’d call it more than adequate.

The Telluride is quite smooth, from the drivetrain to the controls. Everything feels substantial and smooth.

It has a bunch more room than my more intimate Stinger.

But, the mass and weight are always obvious. The steering is lite. While the brakes aren’t bad, it takes a little while to get used to stopping the Telluride vs my “stop right now” Stinger. You don’t want to try to take a corner at speed.

For what it is and what it does, it is impressive, however. Materials and build quality are on par with the Germans and the Japanese lux brands.

I believe it’s a base model. So, don’t know if Kia offers a “sport” model, but would be interested in one if they made it.

All-in-all, if I was in the market for a large SUV, I’d put the Telluride at the top of the list. I can’t imagine getting much more that you would want or need in a vehicle. Well, maybe an Escalade that can drive itself, but that’s another topic.

we spent a few days with our son. He got a turntable and has a fair amount of albums now (everyone in the family that had a collection passed it along). So we listened to a lot. It was fine. Most of them had clean sound, a few classics had some "character". But it was odd that every 20 minutes, the music ended and someone had to get up and do some work!

As far as online social remarks, I find using my own BS detector and common sense to be the arbiter that’s most reliable to me.

Happy we have the opportunity to call out BS when we see it, too. Don’t agree with what you’re reading? Turn the page (or in this situation, scroll on by).

Anyway, enough of that and back to the fascinating world of audio turntables. ;)

I will say that the Victor I’m working on has way better build quality and engineering than anything I’ve seen recently. Even the materials are much better. These vintage units were NOT built to a price point, at least not one that I can see. They just build them the best they could as far as I can tell.

The engineering, using magnetic control for anti-skate, cartridge tracking weight, vertical movement (to help with warped records) is amazing. Add in the Quartz Lock for speed control (which I didn’t even have to touch as it was dead on).

Even using wood (albeit veneer) as a base (plinth) is something you wouldn’t see today.

I know today’s turntable manufacturers state that manual belt drive turntables are “better”. In reality, it’s easier to manufacture manual belt drive turntables than it is direct drive automatic ones.

It did cost me a bit for the cartridge headshell (~$100 used). I found “new-old stock” cartridge. It tracks at 1 grams. Find a cartridge today that can track that?

Got the veneer repaired. A little sanding, a little clear coat, and if I didn’t tell you where the damage was, you’d never notice. Cleaned all the electric contacts. Buttons have been cleaned. Tonearm is in great shape (aluminum S-shape).

Gears are all metal (not plastic) and have been lubed.

It will take me about an hour to put everything back together. I’ll throw up some pics if you guys are interested.

BTW, those vintage Technics and Dual Turntables are highly desirable. If they work, some are worth a pretty penny....especially if they were from the era where they didn’t use a lot of plastic on them.

Sport model Telluride would be an oxymoron. But great review, once again written so the common man can understand and get the facts he needs to know.
One reason I would rather have a sedan than an SUV or wagon is........it takes less time to heat up or cool down the sedan. But, I prefer the driving dynamics of being lower to the ground as well. But, to each his own.

For those who don't follow CCBA, I might go look at a new Supra 3.0.When I'm considering a new vehicle that I'm not familiar with I always like to check out owner forums to get a feel for any problems with a vehicle. I know they often tend to be echo chambers, but sometimes you learn something useful, like the fact that some Giulias have issues with certain options because the cars left the factory missing a couple of wiring harnesses.

Anyway, I went to www.supraforums.com. They have a section for the new(MKV) cars. It's a hoot, the owners of "classic" Supras hang out there and constantly badger anyone who likes the new models. On one topic a guy was asking about buying a 2020 or 2021 and several people recommended a Camry TRD instead. With a straight face, I'm afraid.

It does sound a little sketchy.

This place being what it is, I'd expect politicians and the top few bootstrapping self-made building it themselves dynamos of hard work and winning to be able to jump the line ahead of frontline workers and those with high risk conditions.

And to be fair, on a national level, the federal response has been marginal on a good day, pathetic on many more.

I'd trust official numbers from FL maybe microscopically more than I would data from PRC or Russia. I can also compare WA numbers (we were the first hot zone in Murka), and even the numbers possibly bent at the encouragement of a fine specimen like DeSantis don't look like anything to brag about.

CA is just a bad luck zone. Fires, earthquakes, drought, plague, traffic, but I guess the sun cancels it out. And for the pandemic, per capita, maybe not so bad. FL has 53% the population but 80% of the deaths.

That's something I worry about, especially those being "taught" at home and supervised by people who might not have what it takes to teach. I think of my 10 year old niece, who is schooling from home fulltime. My sister is a teacher, but a special ed teacher, so she still goes in every day, and her husband works in logistics for a large retailer, so he is on site daily, too. My mom, who is retired, is staying with my sister and helping with my niece. It's all going fairly well, save for math, which my niece dislikes, and my mom dislikes even more. There will be consequences for this, and I suspect my niece is more fortunate than many. I predict it will just exacerbate the socio-economic gap in another generation. The rich kids will survive, too - probably similar for those chasing their (or their parents) sports dream.

Did you get your COVID vaccine yet? Got mine a week ago and it was very easy except for my growing a third eyeball.
Uh oh. Next step to becoming a Zombie is when you start growing another head inside your rectum. Keep your third eye out for that.

Up here, the second 4000 doeses apparently arrived on NYE. Govts being what they are, nothing is being done with them until next week. The most recent forecast I’ve seen is saying it won’t be until September before the general population has received vaccines.

I won’t comment further as this isn’t the place.

Those are some wise words, OldFarmer. Let's leave COVID theories/politics out of here. Lord knows we can get that on any other social media platform, in abundance.

I'm not even in market, but right now, conversation about turntables seems about 1000% more interesting and on-topic.

Out driving and enjoying the Passat with sunroof open and music playing I decided to browse vehicles at CarMax. I don’t see prices softening yet. What surprised me is several cars on the lot had obvious body repair, mismatched paint gloss, wavy metal repair. I know CarMax is good not to sell cars with frame or flood damage, but I don’t remember seeing them sell cars that have had such sloppy repair. Is the market that tight that they have reduced their standards?

Happy New Year, all. NYE marked the 7 year anniversary of buying my '13 XF, now with a whopping 67,500 miles on the odo. 7 years, what is wrong with me? How did I not buy a new car over this weekend? I'm not sure that I'm still allowed on the CCBA board.

But, to be honest, I've been in a different place since the Thanksgiving time, the following is not exactly rosy, so feel free to skip as I know all here have their own families and friends to think about.

No doubt, 2020 will be memorable for all the wrong reasons, the last few weeks of the year were fairly horrible in my small world. My ex, the mother of my children passed unexpectedly (and young). While she tested negative for Covid, its effect on the world was no doubt a factor. She moved across the country 3+ years ago for work, and not to a city that has been to her liking. My 93 y.o. Aunt passed a couple of weeks ago, a good life and she passed as she wanted. My 87 y.o. father (and "baby brother" of my aforementioned late Aunt) tested Covid positive a couple of weeks ago; "silver lining" is that he's in a hospital bed, with oxygen keeping his blood ox levels at an acceptable level. No longer term prognosis yet.

Apologies, but thanks for letting me write...

When I built my receiver amplifier kit (Heathkit) in the 70s, there was a capacitor a little bigger than that one for each channel. The warning was that the voltage/current could kill you, so treat those carefully after they had been connected.

I don't think I pointed out that the Buckeyes won against Clemson! They play Alabama in a couple of weeks!

And on a lesser note in my files, the Bengals won 2 games. Maybe the residents of Hamilton County and of Ohio shouldn't have the stadium razed that we paid to build for the owner. LOL

    I hear you.

I'm sure it will be an interesting game. Alabama and OSU have met 3 times. Alabama won twice and the last meeting had OSU on top.

I wanted to beat Notre Dame. Ohio State I just hope it's a good game.

I haven't hear anything about Field's injury yet. He's young so, if it's not too terrible, he should be OK by game time.

Be very careful of voicing your theories about viral origins. There are forces that will come after you for ‘Wrongthink’. I made the same speculation in the comments section of a YouTube video and my account was suddenly suspended. No explanation given.

Need section 230 repealed to eliminate bias.
