I’d build one like Mike Valentine’s- it looks like a colonial carriage house. His garage holds 12 cars- and even has a heated floor.

Is he still associated with his namesake radar detectors? I met him once at a business soirée I was invited to. We sat at the same dinner table together. Nice guy. His wife, on the other hand...........????!!!!!!!
He sold his interest in Cincinnati Microwave in the late ‘80s and formed Valentine Research. He sold an ingenious device known as the G-Analyst until his covenant not to compete expired, and at that point he unveiled the Valentine One.
My wife and I have seen Mike and Peg several times over the years. She always seemed very nice.
Maybe I caught her on a bad day. She was not very hospitable when we were at dinner. Mike, on the other hand, was great to converse with. I'm always willing to give anyone the benefit of the doubt. In fairness, I didn't even remember her name until you just brought it up.

I knew his affiliation with Escort before breaking out on his own. I was thinking the same....30+ish years ago. Met him originally when my company was a supplier of tech for Cincinnati Microwave.

The dinner was 5 or 6 years ago.

Over the years, I've had many detectors...both Valentines and Escorts. I currently use an Escort 9500. Not the latest tech, but works for my needs. Been to both showrooms. Escort is close to where I live. Valentine is within 5 minutes of my eye surgeon.

I was entering a highway where the cars are going 70 to 80 mph. I had a long ramp but a guy in a pickup truck was speeding up in the right lane of a 2 lane highway (2 lanes each way), he may have been trying to get ahead of me but he also seemed to be trying to cut me off so I wouldn't get on the highway or maybe in front of him. I was still in COMFORT mode, but I would say I used about 328 of the 339 horses to take off and got in front of him. Falling back behind him was an option, but the way he was driving he may have stayed directly beside me making it harder to get on the highway.

It is so true. Trading can work, I have a friend who lives off trading. One day he lost $30000 on a stock and I felt bad for him, but he says he made $50000 the day before so no big deal....I can't live that way.

Investing at that level is really just gambling.
You want to talk about gambling?

Been reading articles about the debacle in Texas - turns out the utilities are so deregulated that some companies were offering variable rate electricity. Folks who were able to keep their lights on are now seeing 4 and 5 figure bills for those few days. And, one company has it tied to the customer's debit or credit card, which then wiped out bank accounts and maxing credit cards.

That's gambling - but never in a million years did these customers expect this to happen to them. And, these are necessities, not like a Netflix subscription that can be cancelled with minimal inconvenience.
I saw an article about that. And the power company bankrupting these people is blaming the regulators for allowing them to do it. HUH?! It is a crazy crazy world.
Back in the 1980’s I was involved in a complex(multiple properties and multiple lenders) farm foreclosure case. The debtors’ defense was that the lenders should have known that the debtors couldn’t pay off those large loans and mortgages.
A lot of farmers got into that situation mainly through over leveraging their farms to buy expensive equipment or additional land. The international export market was booming and they were trying to take advantage of that. Then we had some international dispute with Russia (I think) and a lot of export contracts got canceled leaving farmers with over priced assets and no markets. Almost overnight a lot of farmers found they owed more than they were worth with no way of paying the loans.

The lenders got caught just as flat footed as the farmers due to federal government politics that no one could have foreseen.

This family had been warned by the lenders about their debt, and the son who pretty much ran the operation liked “new paint.”
I was representing a retired couple who had sold their farm to the debtors by a deed with a retained lien. We had a judge who didn’t have a particularly sharp legal mind and he bought the debtors’ argument that they shouldn’t have to pay my clients because the other banks were foreclosing on them. It was beyond frustrating.

Dishwasher shopping....went to the locally owned store last night. They have next to no stock. They did have some that just weren’t to my liking, so it was understandable why they were the only units they had.

I was actually talking to one of the store managers, who was working the store. I casually mentioned that the whole COVID thing had messed up most retail. Curiously, he said his business is down, but only because he can’t get stock. Not sure what this means, but he said he can get better stock from a brand made in Turkey (he showed me one of them, which was nice, but it was made...well....in Turkey) than he could from units made in the U.S. (Bosch and Whirlpool). Even the GE brands, made 100 ,miles from me in KY, were in short supply.

There’s a new retailer locally called Appliance Factory. They’re just another retailer. But, walking into their store, I felt like I had to take a shower before leaving....dirty, sales people who should be wearing white patent leather shoes and belts. NO THANKS!

Lowes had some stock. Looking at Best Buy today. We’ll see how they work out.

I was in Home Depot in Florence, yesterday. They had a big stock of dishwashers. They don't carry Bosch.

It's a little ways away, but I've had good luck with Hagedorn in Erlanger, KY. (Dixie Highway).
They've been in business longer than even R&B. Maybe give them a call?

A lot of the places I used to shop appliances are long gone (HHGregg, Sears, Steinbergs, Swallens)

For high end stuff, Keidel is knowledgeable, but not sure of their stock or pricing. I received a lot of good, free advice there, though.
    Thanks, Walt!

I'm not so certain they'll allow me to cross the OH River into KY. Now that @roadburner is not available to adjudicate any of my transgressions, I'm almost afraid to cross the bridge. ;)

Actually, I should make a trip to Costco down your way for a Four Roses run. Costco up here does not have any stock available, either.

Called Lowes near me and they have this unit which interests me...

The sales person I spoke to was knowledgeable and quite nice. No stock of Bosch, though.

The electricity was being purchased on the "spot market" whatever that is. I keep seeing references to something from the government that restricted TX from purchasing electricity on a sharing basis in an emergency because they were staying independent as a state on this. Perhaps someone else can explain.

Imagine filling up your Leaf or Tesla at these rates if even more people had electric only vehicles.

Gasoline refineries also had gone off line which affected the gasoline prices here. They're down 10 cents already from the peak. Everything froze up.

Our gasoline prices continue to skyrocket. I saw one station at $2.72 for RUG this morning.
That price was like gasoline going to $200 per gallon, so no, you won't get my sympathy  .

Lots of people love capitalism. Until it hits their wallet, then suddenly they are big fans of government intervention. I feel bad for them, but they really don’t have a right to it back. Know what you are signing before you do it.
Not sure that this is a issue with capitalism, capitalism is when if Kroger is charging to much I just move along to Piggly Wiggly or to Stickguy's vittles and oil change shack. A utility that you are locked into and usually don't have a choice of isn't really capitalism, it's actually the opposite end of the spectrum.
Especially if that kWh today is 100 times of that yesterday and nobody gave you even a peep of warning. All was needed an email or phone call, hey Mr. Customer, we have to charge you this much today cause were bringing power from these 1000 cyclists we had to hire and put on a saddle to keep you warm. Oh, we also noticed you're already owe us a double of what you owed us last month and it's only three days in the cycle. Have a nice day.
I used capitalism in the loose way, since most people in this country have no idea what capitalism or socialism actually are, and use the terms incorrectly. And seem to miss the point that not all government regulation or intervention is inherently evil.

And, you really can’t have it both ways.
    In explaining capitalism vs socialism vs communism I use the mouse trap example. If you build a better mouse trap;

in communism the government takes your mouse trap and people stand in line to use it.
In socialism the government tells you how to make it, who to hire, what supplies to use and how much to sell it for.
In capitalism someone comes along and builds a better mouse.
So what is it called when the government tells taxpayers to subsidize really sucky mouse traps because a lot of people prefer buying the better mouse traps made elsewhere?

Probably a typical operator(“driver” is probably far too generous a term) who believed that AWD repeals the laws of physics. He probably just learned that AWD doesn’t shorten a vehicle’s stopping distance.
A RWD car on winter rubber will outperform it’s AWD counterpart wearing all-season tires.
In certain conditions. There are conditions where the all-season tires are at their optimum.

I like this type, controls on the front wall rather than at the top. A technician showed me how unprotected these top controllers were from any kind of spill from the counter on this LG POS (official model name) I bought. No gasket of any kind, it's ridiculous. It takes a bit more for that spilled moisture to get to the controllers when they're positioned in the front.

Maybe certain things such as necessary utilities should be regulated to some degree. I am sure these people signed the contract thinking they could save money if they only paid for the electricity needed....didn't see the fine print or didn't understand the legalize. It's easy to say people have to know what they are signing, but when you are up against top level con men it is best that the government provide some rules.

I'd bet number of them, even if warned of the possibility of 100 times rates, would say "what are the chances of that, I'm saving ten bucks per month now" and when it happens they'd still claim they got "screwed". Vast majority of people are terrible risk-adjusted thinkers, usually go from one extreme to another, either think nothing would happen (black swans don't exist) or think twenty worst things will happen to them in next two months. Not to mention it's very difficult to calculate the odds, but even if you could, most people would not be able to interpret them correctly. That's why some people or companies are incredibly fragile financially, others don't want take even reasonable risks for potential great gains.

I've noticed that older Construction Managing Execs that have been previously burned are less risk tolerant of those rare "black swan" occurrences than I am.

A good example is that a church wanted two "special order custom blown glass light fixtures" for the front of their stage. I'd have obliged them, but the Exec said "NOT IF the Glass Blower doesn't get the light fixture UL-Certified." Apparently, getting the whole fixture UL certified is quite a lengthy and expensive process.

Tiger Woods was in a single-car rollover crash today and suffered multiple leg injuries according to news reports. First responders needed Jaws of Life to extract him. Injuries being described as moderate to serious. A LA TV helicopter shot of the post-crash scene appears to show evidence of him crossing the median on a divided multi-lane street, going through some vegetation/small trees and then tumbling over on a bank. Thankfully no other vehicles were involved. Here's a shot of the vehicle from above, which is a Genesis GV80 courtesy car from this past week's event at Riviera CC.

Hawthorne Blvd is like either 6 or 8 lanes wide (3 or 4 both north and southbound)

Absolutely amazing that no other vehicles were involved, given how busy that road is, normally.

Called Lowes near me and they have this unit which interests me...
The sales person I spoke to was knowledgeable and quite nice. No stock of Bosch, though.

She was also nice enough to send me the pic of their sale price, which is over, tomorrow.
GG - Buy it....a little over budget but it is a Kitchen Aid, gets 4 1/5 stars....looks great inside and out.....nice discount.
I just read Lowes is hiring a lot of employees, business is really good for them, people are staying home more and are fixing up their homes. Also, since they don't go out for dinner as much dishwashers are getting used more than ever.......those are the reasons for the shortage. If it lasts for 10 years you are paying $25 more a year for a deluxe model!

Absolutely amazing that no other vehicles were involved, given how busy that road is, normally.

Possibly the early hour was a benefit in that regard.

Watching the live coverage on KTLA and he hit something hard given the way the front end pancaked pretty much all the way back to the windshield. No wonder his legs were injured. There is a fairly large (maybe 8”) tree trunk broken off immediately in front of the vehicle. He appeared to have narrowly missed a large power pole too.

Correction was issued and officials now say the Jaws were not used to extract him. They used hand tools to remove the windshield and extracted him through that opening.

Some mad driving skills from north of driver100.

To be fair to the poor guy, his truck did go off the road and hit the gravel, a simple mistake, but it flipping up in the air like that and landing on a building is really bad dumb luck!

You're not allowed to say that any more.
Genesis got their name plastered on millions of TV Sets, the advertising is worth $millions.

New Genesis ad campaign theme might be that “If our vehicles don’t catch fire or have the engine seize, they are built tough to take a licking!” :o

I remember when my dad was an active duty firefighter, the "jaws of life" were first introduced. They were pretty amazing back in the day, and are still an essential tool for most every fire department.

lol....it is actually pretty amazing that he lived or is at least not critically injured considering the distance and damage. I thought those wing like decals on the door were a Bentley.
Now we'll have to hear from JMonroe that he drives the same kind of car as Tiger Woods!

Hmm, I'm beginning to think that with all that tech and insane power in the GV80 Tiger Woods must have been momentarily confused resulting in this horrendous accident. God speed Tiger.

It's about average for that engine.

I agree but the trick is to stay between the lines. Hopefully this bogey isn’t too bad for him. Obviously this rules out the Masters this year.

I've noticed that older Construction Managing Execs that have been previously burned are less risk tolerant of those rare "black swan" occurrences than I am.

Considering your belief in your supreme driving skills and "nothing ever happened or will happen to me on a public road at 100 mph" attitude, that doesn't surprise me at all

Nobody ever said nothing ever happened or will happen to me on a public road. However, when someone talks about pedestrians or children when debating freeway/Interstate speed limits, I will call that argument a non-starter, as I haven't seen a non-supervised wandering child on the freeway in all my years of driving.

The "speed kills" myth believing crowd always makes arguments like this of similar weight and breadth. The weight and breadth of having not spent a lot of time thinking through their arguments.

Debating highway/freeway/Interstate speed limits and then having someone mention hazards you'd only encounter on residential arterial streets is a common tactic. No one, and I mean no one advocating for 100 MPH speed limits is advocating for them down the street your house sits on.

On many modern cars the extra strength steel used on pillars to meet safety regulations is too tough to be cut by the jaws of life.

    @jmonroe1,
I guess you are saying the lane keeping doesn't work all that well?

    I guess none of the safety features helped;
Standard adaptive cruise control with semi-autonomous driving mode
Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist

Interesting interior....guess it has a quality look to it.....

Wow, save a $1000, what a deal. Are they’re afraid to tell you what it costs?

As you know my Son and I have done 2 flips and we haven’t spent a grand on any one of the 4 bath areas we’ve done so far. We only use tile and install it shower floor pan or tub all the way to the ceiling and install an accent band of tile horizontally on all three wall surfaces too. We wouldn’t insult ourselves or our prospective buyers by using those chincy plastic tub/shower surrounds. It does take a little more time to do it like we do it but we get every penny back and then some doing it our way. At least we have so far.

Pretty soon we’re going to be good at this stuff.
