The automotive press is crediting the safety features in the GV80 as saving Tiger Woods' life. Does that mean he would be doomed in an equally new but different brand SUV? I just noticed that my Legacy will show you the percent of grade you are ascending/descending. It seems pretty worthless except for when you want to say, "I just went up a 5% grade."
Mrs. j’s ‘18 Subie doesn’t have that feature but then again living all its life in Southwest PA the light could have burned out before I had a chance to notice it. Consider yourself lucky.

Well it does have an extra airbag that might have made a difference:

Sadly, that is the level of "journalism" that one finds in most of the automotive press lately. The feature set is pretty much similar at that price point. The engineering of the structure is what really matters in an crash like that.
I have also read other comments that the intrusion into the passenger compartment was more than what one would expect. I also read comments from the peanut gallery on certain automotive sites that H/K vehicles tend to fold up much more easily in a crash than other brands in that class *cough*M-B, Audi*cough*. But who knows? It did seem to be an extreme case. Will be interesting if the final report from the authorities has details such as speed at impact.
One thing I thought was interesting is that the glass roof seemed to intact after the crash. Haven't read if it has been determined if he was wearing a safety belt or not.

Maybe the IIHS & NHTSA will come up with a new test for automotive safety. The TIGER test. Where they will have to drive a car down the highway and off an embankment to see how well it holds up.

There's not much flat here in the middle of Pennsylvania. The Appalachians sure isn't the Rockies, but there are some pretty nice hills here.
Fair point -- West Virginia has some pretty serious hills too.
There are beautiful hills in PA. They're just not as pretty if you're wanting to go across the lines of the ridges rather than following parallel through the valleys to the lines of the ridges. The Pennsylvania Turnpike was relatively new when my little high school sent us seniors on a trip to New York City, Washington DC, and Hershey at the end of our 12 years.
Can't imagine the trip without the turnpike. I recall eastern Ohio and going through the top of W Va with the twisting and turning hairpin in the charter bus we had. Not like relatively flat Indiana farm country.

Nobody can say Tiger didn’t give that Genny a real workout. Another thing that could have saved him is the paint job. From what I saw that color looks like the old man’s grey I have on my ‘15 Genny. Maybe that color is lathered on extra thick. Only extensive testing can prove that.

The police should have interrogated the EDR by now, so they will most likely know not only the speed but possibly the G-forces sustained in the impacts.

One thing I thought was interesting is that the glass roof seemed to intact after the crash. Haven't read if it has been determined if he was wearing a safety belt or not.
When we visited the MB plant in Stuttgart they said the glass roof adds strength to the car....it is made with steel beams.
I have to feel sorry for Tiger. I can only imagine what his private hospital bed looks like. Doubt that he's home yet.
I roamed the orthopaedic hallways when I was in for surgery couple decades ago. I walked with my IV stand and monitor to build up strength. But those folks in the ortho ward looked miserable with their pain killers or lack of and their extremities being held up in the air by chains to frames overhead. They couldn't get out of bed and walk even to the bathroom.
I can only imagine what they're having to do to Tiger's leg to encourage return to normal circulation.
On the other hand if the driver of the Hyundai Genesis were John Q. Public, they would be charged with speeding, reckless operation, crossing the median, driving left of center, and possibly driving under disability or not being attentive to driving by using cell phone if that's the case.
Instead, he's getting no charges. Good thing it's not a DUI charge.

I noticed that also. It was supposed to be a rollover type crash but the roof and sides showed little if any damage. Looked more like a front end collision with a tree. Maybe it went end over end? Seat belt, air bags, and no fire are what saved him.
That's quite nice. I enjoyed clicking through the links looking at some of the other properties for sale there. One has its own full-size basketball court and locker room on the lower level. Not something you see every day. One of the things I wasn't crazy about with several of them was how close the buildings were to stands of trees/forest. I'd be concerned about wildfires.
This modest little one has that problem, but nothing that couldn't be fixed in a day, and I quite like the interior.

I said I just noticed it. I also said it is worthless..
It may be worthless to those of you who live in flat country, which I'd estimate at 95% of the participants on here, but if actual elevation change is part of your daily drive. . .
Much like yapping about high speed runs. Nevada, Alberta and New Mexico, among other places, have provided me the opportunity to cruise at well over 100 mph for extended periods.
You people need to go west to enjoy your vehicles.
I guess there must be some value to it. I never saw it before. I guess I should display it when going up or down steep hills. I assume if you start up and see it is too steep you stop and back down?? I wonder what is too steep.
Early this week, before I discovered this thing, I started up a steep, snow covered, hill - just to see if I could make it. The car stopped about half way up, but then crawled the rest of the way up.
I think I'll go back to that hill and see how steep it really is.
There's not much flat here in the middle of Pennsylvania. The Appalachians sure isn't the Rockies, but there are some pretty nice hills here.
It's mostly flat here but there are some small pockets of land that are rough and ready with lots of twists and hills. But those are few and small and a lot are protected or private land. If you don't mind a long drive the far northwest corner of the state and the southernmost quarter of the state tend to get hilly with some good roads. But the southern end of the state is mostly a national forest so not a lot of opportunity to have that kind of fun there.

Living out in the middle of nowhere might not be as great as it sounds. Due to circumstances we lived on 100 acres about 20 minutes from town and civilization. It sounds ideal, and I get that it suits some people....but it wasn't for me. Every trip added a 20 minute drive on a busy highway, in each direction. I could do the drive to get to work and home, and then do it again later to go out for the evening. I didn't like having no one around me, felt too isolated. In town, I don't have a need to talk to my neighbors, but I like having civilization around me.
Also hard to go for a walk in the country...at least in town there are sidewalks, roads, lights.
I also like restaurants, grocery stores, doctors offices, dentists etc are 5 minutes away....not 40 minutes round trip. I know lots of people love living in the country...but it might not be as ideal as it sounds.

I would say that most current models of SUV's could have kept Woods from having a tee time with God so crediting a specific make and model for saving his life is a bit over the top. It would be better stating that certain safety features found in most cars/SUV's aided in saving his life.

On the day of the accident I was watching the wall-to-wall coverage on KTLA in L.A. for a while and they had a former cop who was a crash investigator on for a long time. One of the things he said was that from the lack of damage to the body sides and roof that it wasn't a rollover (sideways) but a flip end over end. It looked as though he sent the front end into a earthen bank which caused most of the damage and it then went end over end before finishing on its right side. The guy noted the largish tree trunk snapped off in front and said that likely happened mid-crash given how the front end was uniformly crushed across the width of the car.
Nice spread, I'm interested !! Anyone know where I can get a nothing down 500 year interest free mortgage?

Most of the people I know who lived out in the middle of nowhere ended up moving back into a nearby town for the exact same reasons. However as far as I am concerned those towns are out in the middle of nowhere to begin with but that's just me. One guy I know is still 30 miles from the nearest wally world even though he lives in town.

Sure is -- 13 degrees is a little over 23%, which is how gradients are normally reported. The Interstate system tries to keep grades at 6% or less which is a little under.3.5 degrees. That said, you probably have the option of looking at tilt sideways using the same software, and that is traditionally reported in degrees.

The MB "Hold" function is also useful on hills and flat ground alike. Give the brake a little more of a tap once you are stopped, and the brakes will remain engaged until you depress the throttle, without a foot on the brake. Handy on hills and when trying to get an edge coming off a light .
