@driver100 If that is wind damage to your shingles have you notified your insurance carrier? They should send an adjuster and you may be covered for replacement. We had wind and hail damage last year and ours was not that obvious. Our roof was replaced. Looks like a very nice home.
@sda Thanks. I don't think we would get too far with the insurance company. The house is 14 years old, and other houses built at the same time or even later have been reshingled, so even if there was wind damage, the pro-rated value would be very little.
@driver100 said: @jmonroe1 Thank you for your informative and always knowledgeable reply. I explained to Mrs D and she said she was talking about solar shingles. What do you think?
I don’t know what solar shingles are. They sound pretty gimmickry to me. But, they could be the next panacea.
Thanks o-f....I didn't know what Mrs D100 was talking about but that article explains it very well. Just glancing through it sounds solar shingles will cost 3 or 4X as much, but they would only be used on sections facing west, the rest of the roof looks pretty good and should last a few more years. But then again, I think I would prefer to get a new regular roof and just get it done.
Are the shingles warrantied for a certain time? 20 yr? 30 yr? by the manufacturer? The home insurance would protect against loss from wind or hail damage.
I have replacement value insurance so a few years back when hail hit the area the insurance company paid the whole bill including minor damages to heat pump and the agent inspected the gutters but didn't find damage to them. They replaced the roof on the storage barn which I had shingled myself with matching shingles from the house a few years earlier along with a ridge vent on the yard storage so that the little roof matched the big roof.

It may be worth a try. Our roof was 16 years old and with the exception of the difference to upgrade to architectural shingles vs 3 tab and $500 deductible, our roof was replaced--about $1500 out of pocket.

Unless they’ve come up with something new that produces equal power at oblique angles I wouldn’t put solar on a west facing roof. Even if they did, you’d get zero power all morning. Combine that with the lower sun angle at your latitude and the greater number of cloudy days and disappointment looms.

All I know is, I am surrounded by houses that went up approx the same time....12 to 15 years ago....4 out of 5 have been re-shingled. I don't think insurance comes into play, no one else claimed it and at most they would only have another year coverage. Also, no documents about the roof, house 14 years old, builder lived in it for 2 years to claim capital gains....then sold it. *Mike Holmes was born just a few miles North of me....maybe he would give an old buddy some advice. *I doubt if it has to do with vents...there are a lot of them and the builder was very meticulous and didn't cut corners. *O-F, I am hoping these solar shingles Mrs D100 is getting a quote on are so expensive they won't even get considered. If they cost 3 or 4X as much it would be better to do the whole roof with regular shingles for the same price. If they are cheaper I'll use your info they are on the wrong side of the house to get enough sun.
@driver100, I don't see any roof venting in your picture. The shingles look like they curled up, which from what I understand is from too much heat. My roof is 23 years old and looks way better than that. The house has soffit and ridge venting.

I have to see if I have a picture of the rest of the roof....only the shingles facing that direction have a problem and there are peaks and valleys everywhere. I'll try to round up a picture.

Could be heat buildup in the attic I suppose. Or maybe there is another source of hot air contributing to the problem.... 😁
My take is most people here buy the cars they want. Whether it's what they need or just what they want, they enjoy the one they picked. A few people, not here, buy what they think will impress others.
And for most part for me it goes back to the customer service. If the local representatives of the car brand can't fix things right or say they all do that so just live with it, then people change. The previous store where I bought Buicks changed when the son of the three brothers owning came back with his BA in Business from a local state college and got into managing. Bye. Bye. Became a Chev buyer (that store also sold Chev when the Buick franchise was taken away by "the government."
I have had good service on my Chevrolets through the area store where I've bought them. For the last several years the service manager and the head work order guys have been very customer oriented. The service manager used to be with Sweeney stores in Cincinnati but apparently was recruited to come north. He makes the difference along with the service writer.
I agree completely with your comments, imid! I went over to my dealer for a carwash late this morning and what you said about service hit me square in the face. I came upon the Hyundai service department and, as usual, there were at least 10 cars lined up for their service appointments. The valets who greet the Hyundai owners were told to say the same thing to everyone who pulled up - "...Do you have an appointment for service?" Everyone I observed who pulled in all had appointments for service - about 10 people in total, so each of them answered yes to the question posed by the valets. The valets were obviously told to respond to anyone who pulled in this morning, whether they had an appointment or not, "...we have a back-up in the service department this morning and it will probably take about 3-4 hours to complete your service. Would you like to come back another day - I can make another appointment for you?" 10% of the Hyundai owners agreed to make another appointment, but 90% (about eight of the owners in line) started to raise the riot act. One said that he had only one day off in the next month, which was now, to have his car serviced and he demanded to see the owner of the dealership. Another got out of his car, threw the key at the valet, and said he would be back in 5 hours to pick up his car. The others just sat there and waited for a service writer to write them up. They had little chance of getting their cars back within the 3-4 hour time frame.
You see, they don't give car loaners for servicing Hyundai's - only Genesis does that! It was like living through a day in Dante's Inferno! Lots of unhappy people. But, this was like any other service department I have frequented when I owned Oldsmobiles, Pontiacs, Chevy's, Fords, and Mercury's - dirty, poorly manned, and totally disorganized. Luckily for me, when you pull up in a Genesis, you are treated differently - and the valets have been trained to react differently to Genesis owners than to Hyundai owners. I am immediately greeted and asked if I had a service appointment with no indication that there was a back-up, in the service department. One of the younger valets ran over to me and told the first valet that he would take care of me. He asked if I was in for a car wash, and I responded yes. I gave him my key and off he went. It was a bit embarrassing since the Hyundai owners gave me nasty looks - but I wasn't about to explain that I was special!
I walked into the service department's waiting room and, as typical, there were two vending machines with overpriced goodies and a coffee maker with no artificial sweetener or cream/milk. Just a dirty, creepy place. So, I decided to sit outside near the service drive to observe, firsthand, how these unsuspecting Hyundai owners were being treated - which I referred to in the first couple of paragraphs.
Not a pleasant place to spend time - I can assure you of that. About 15 minutes later, my beautiful G90 was returned to me. I gave the valet a $10.00 tip for doing my inside windows, and off I went for another experience.
Today’s Arrogant Idiot Award(It isn’t as good as one of Mike’s stories but it will have to do):
To enter Seabrook Island you have to drive past the guard booth. There are two lanes going in. Residents have a barcode sticker on the side window while vacationers have a card you leave on the dashboard. There is a message on a signpost as well as on the asphalt that states:
“RIGHT LANE BARCODE ONLY .” I’m in the left lane waiting behind another car when a ditzy blonde in a Navigator runs up beside me in the right lane. The right lane gate doesn’t open because her SUV doesn’t have a barcode. She lowers her window and yells at the guard, who patiently asks if she has a card; she points at the dash, which of course is not visible to the guard. She snatches it out of the dash and waves it at the guard, who simultaneously waves me through.
I’m making the next left when the ditz comes up behind me. I decided she needed some time to calm down, so I made a point of driving exactly one mph under the speed limit and coming to a complete stop at each stop sign. As expected, this coaxed her into passing me right where a local cop often sits. Sadly, there wasn’t one sitting there today...
I had another one of those hair-raising experiences earlier this morning at the Casino. I had some accumulated "free-play" credits built up over the last couple of months and decided to go into the local Casino and take advantage of those one-armed bandits. I sat down at one of my favorite machines (there are 6 of them in a row - all the same - but I sit at the 3rd slot machine which is usually very good to me. After about 5 minutes, an old lady with a walker tries to sit down at the machine to my right - the last slot machine in this particular bank of slots (6) that was available - all the others were being used. Since she was using a walker, it took her quite a bit of time to navigate around the chair before she could sit and, like a shooting bullet, this other old lady with a cane scoots into the chair from the other side just as this poor old lady was about to sit down. Well, a fight broke out between the two of them with pushing and shoving - pushing and shoving so violent that I was pushed out of my chair and I landed on the floor. Did anyone stop to help me up off the floor - NO! the fighting continued until security came over (4 guys) and broke up the fight. Still, I'm on the floor, screaming in pain from my back, and no one helps me up into my chair.
"What happened here - who started all of this?" I yell at them that I need help getting up and I told them I witnessed the whole thing. One of the security guards finally helps me up and back into my chair and they ask me what happened. I told them that this old lady with the walker was about to sit down at the machine when the other old lady with a cane pushed her aside and sat down in the chair. That's when the pushing and shoving started, which I told them twice since they asked me twice to repeat the incident.
They finally told the lady with the cane that she needed to stand up out of the chair and she was told she was being banned from the Casino for a period of 2-weeks for her behavior. They then helped the lady with the walker into the chair and the 4 security guards left escorting the old lady with the cane out of the Casino. The old lady with the walker put a $100.00 bill into the slot machine and on the first spin, she hit a jackpot of $12,000. Did she think to give any of that to me for helping her - absolutely - she gave me $1000.00 and thanked me for helping her.
Stories and experiences like this are truly unbelievable and I think I am going to start a journal of my experiences with old ladies in super markets, drug stores, and Casinos. Definitely going to be a best seller.

I remember hearing a story (was it here) of a person who received a spoofed call from a telemarketer that came up on caller ID as his own number.
Maybe that’s not as dumb on their part as you might think. I know if that happened to me, I’d answer or call back just to have some fun and hang up midway through their first sentence.
On a related note a couple years ago I decided to have some fun and pushed button number one because Social Security was going to put me in the slammer for a fraud I committed. The woman said something like, “don’t worry sir we’ll be able to settle this without to much grief on your part. All I need to get started helping you is your SS number”. I said, since you’re the SS Administration and you called me shouldn’t you already know it”? CLICK. Hanging up works both ways.

What you do if you are talking to them explain that you are having some connectivity issues and if you get cut off just call you back. Then let them say something and as you are talking hang up in the middle of your sentence. Repeat everytime they call back, see how many times they call back.

My Chevrolet store has been very good. The Cruze was bought at another Chevy store that had lots of 15 Cruzes as CPO from lease and rental during 2015. But it has been serviced for oil changes and alignments at my store. The Cruze has had many warranty repairs up to 80K when warranty expired. At the last visit for a leaky plastic tree of connections in the coolant system, I believe they changed the thermostat without charging. Just because the rest of the parts were off... The service manager also approved a loaner despite the car not having been originally bought there. Loaner was one of their older Impalas but it ran great.
It sounds like I wouldn't get that treatment at the Hyundai store.

You could live to be 120 and stay healthy enough to drive until your death and you still would be a sample size of 1 person.
But I can understand your position. I used to say that I don't need a back up camera because I've never run over anything or anyone in reverse.
Nowadays I like having the camera.
Well the truth of the matter is until someone can come in and provide actual statistical data to support one way or the other it's all opinion and personal preference.

I mentioned on CCBA that the GM at the Cadillac dealer that has the M2 Competition I looked at emailed me an told me that the M2 was traded for a new Escalade. I suspected the guy was a wearer rather than a driver when I saw he bought the car last January and traded it a couple of weeks ago. I’d understand if he had flipped the M2 for a V-Series, but trading for an Escalade confirmed he’s a Five Star Wearer.
You may be right but there may be other reasons. Say a lifestyle change. Maybe he bought the car in January and in March his wife tells him he is about to be a daddy. You never know.
Pretty sure the M2 has child safety latches in the rear; so unless they are having triplets, not a good reason to dump an M2 Competition.

Audi guy might also be single or a DINK and has the available cash flow, especially if he lives in an area where housing isn't bonkers, or he had lucky timing/birth. Not having dependents can open up some spending doors.
On the snobby ideal, I know it is an old trope, but it is funny how a showy 70K car can be snobby, while a 70K showboat truck is some kind of bootstrapping blue collar man of the people hero, while in reality both can be operated by virtually identical people. Badge snobbery is also amusing. I recall maybe 15-20 years ago, Lexus fans in particular would snicker at other highline cars/owners, saying they only bought for the badge. Yeah, the same can be thrown back to them simply by saying "Toyota".
It's like you know what old age is? It is always 10 years more than you are now.
You know what kind of car a snob drives? One that costs $3000 more than the car I am driving now.
It's like reverse snobbery....I am such a good virtuous person because I don't spend any more than I have to on a car. Don't you have some very expensive watches and clocks....that doesn't count as excessive, .....hmmmmm, are they a necessity?
Nope not really, I am not saying I am a virtuous person because I don't spend any more on a car than I have to. I could have spent a lot less by not getting a convertible or by compromise but I didn't. A snob would be someone who flaunts it or needs to have the "better" car.
And while I do own some antique watches none of them are very expensive. While they may cost more than your garden variety Timex store sell more expensive modern watches all the time.
How do you rate snobbery based on a guy who makes $80k a year and drives a $70k Audi, and a CEO who makes $2 million a year and drives a $100000 BMW M5? The Audi guy is using a higher percentage of his income to but a car than the BMW guy....so who's the snob? Maybe, just maybe having a car with certain features is more important to the Audi guy. I would say unless you have proof someone shows signs of being a snob, we should default to accepting that he bought the car he prefers. Calling someone a snob because they have an expensive car just sounds like jealousy to me.
A lot of the misconceptions are exactly that, misconceptions. Faulty stereotypes based on misinformation. Someone might think owning an Audi is snobbier than it really is because some bozo told them they spent $4,500 on repairs just outside of warranty at a dealership when a reasonable shop would have cost only $1,500 for the same repairs. I've heard figures as high as "you'll spend $10,000" on maintenance over the first 5 years owning an A4 driving it 15,000 miles a year. It doesn't take complicated math to figure that out as highly unlikely. First, you only have a 25,000 mile opportunity to pay out of pocket for unexpected repairs. Second, a synthetic oil change can easily be purchased for around $110 even in CA.

What kind of statistics are you looking for? What would be relevant? The only thing I can think of is when a backer into a space has a collision with someone backing out of a space. In my sample of 1 an arbiter decided that it was 80% the backing out of a space guys' fault. Not 100%, but better than 50%. If Insurance companies could provide stats on the outcomes of these types of claims, that should just about settle it. I suspect with the vast majority 100% of the blame goes to the guy backing out of a space, as that's the only logical verdict. One's trajectory into an open space doesn't cause a collision. One's trajectory out of a parking space obviously DID cause a collision if there was one.

My first thought was wind damage since it's only on the western side. Those shingles do look as though they are heat affected. It's hard to tell if there are ridge vents from the picture. Maybe a combination of heat and wind.

@driver100, I don't see any roof venting in your picture. The shingles look like they curled up, which from what I understand is from too much heat. My roof is 23 years old and looks way better than that. The house has soffit and ridge venting.
Could be heat buildup in the attic I suppose. Or maybe there is another source of hot air contributing to the problem.... 😁
But why is happening only on the west side of the house? Do I talk out of the side of my mouth?
My first thought was wind damage since it's only on the western side. Those shingles do look as though they are heat affected. It's hard to tell if there are ridge vents from the picture. Maybe a combination of heat and wind.
We just remembered a neighbor 3 houses down is a just retired construction and home building guy. When I see him I will see what he thinks. I think someone who actually sees it and knows the weather conditions here might have an idea......I truly do appreciate all the help, always amazes me the amount of knowledge around here.....from gardening, to home building, to finding appliances and even a bit about cars.

Nice story, but at tax time expect a Form 1099 from the old lady so can pay your fair share of income taxes. Remember, gambling winnings and gifts are taxable income but you can offset those winnings with gambling losses-- so keep track of your gambling expenses and losses, cocktail girls tips are not included.

Speaking of you being old......today I went to pickup our dinner and as I got in my car I saw this coming up behind me. It looked low and wide and it had those wings which made me think it was a Bentley at first. As it passed me I thought it had a really nice look to it, and the electric blue color really set it off. I think you need to trade in your old man's gray for an electric blue G70.
My guess is that you never tried to install a child seat in a M2 or any coupe for that matter. It's somewhat hard to do as well as getting that kid in and out of that back seat. A whole lot easier in a sedan or something like an Escalade. Not to mention all the other stuff you have to carry if you have a kid, like the stroller and the bag containing extra diapers, wipes formula or snacks when they get older. An M2 won't cut it to well.

The home insurance would protect against loss from wind or hail damage.
I have replacement value insurance so a few years back when hail hit the
area the insurance company paid the whole bill including minor damages to
heat pump and the agent inspected the gutters but didn't find damage to them.
They replaced the roof on the storage barn which I had shingled myself
with matching shingles from the house
a few years earlier along with a ridge vent on the yard storage so that the little roof matched
the big roof.

I am surrounded by houses that went up approx the same time....12 to 15 years ago....4 out of 5 have been re-shingled.

Well the truth of the matter is until someone can come in and provide actual statistical data to support one way or the other it's all opinion and personal preference.
Except that one way requires you to back into the right of way without the right of way, which may or may not be wide open, and the other requires you only to back into a wide open space while you have the right of way. Choose wisely. So in other words what I stated still stands.

You’ve been falsely accused of a
Crime based on your phone data? Do tell...
Phone data, no. Mistaken identity, yes. Also think an automated accusation was made that never should have received the rubber-stamped signature of "law enforcement" verification.
So in other words what I stated still stands.

I’m sure the lady was looking at you when she asked if you needed help. So, you must not look as young as you think you do. Just the opposite for me. When I go to a restaurant and I’m eligible for a senior discount, before the server brings the check I tell them I’m a senior. Most of the times I hear, “really”?

Speaking of you being old......today I went to pickup our dinner and as I got in my car I saw this coming up behind me. It looked low and wide and it had those wings which made me think it was a Bentley at first.
As it passed me I thought it had a really nice look to it, and the electric blue color really set it off. I think you need to trade in your old man's gray for an electric blue G70.

I guess the sarcasm from the waitress went right over your head.
Who knew an accordion could be cool?
