Rainy Season has begun here in south Florida. Heavy downpours and squalls every morning (called showers on the breeze) and thunderstorms in the afternoon. We need the rain, but the problem is surface flooding which occurred this morning.

The trees are budding and many are beginning to flower.

As Sandy mentioned after his first trip into our condo community for his new job, the place is well kept and manicured beautifully which adds a needed dimension to living in our community. My HOA monthly fee is now $520 - so I guess I am getting my money’s worth.🤓

The problem with heavy rainfall is that it comes down so fast that the ground cannot absorb it and it runs off and creates flooding in some areas. Best is a nice study drizzle that's slow enough to allow the ground to absorb it.
Unless the ground is already saturated from previous rainfall, which is our situation right now here in east Texas. We had a solid week of rain, then a 4 day reprieve, and now we're looking at another week of rain with the ground already saturated. My area doesn't flood (knock on wood), but I am getting tired of the incessant rain.
Back in the 80's we had a study drizzling rain that went on for 4 days with a total of, IIRC, over a foot of rain. At first it wasn't an issue but soon the ground got saturated and the flood waters started to get higher and higher. It took several days for all of the extra water to subside.

I read, with interest, some of the comments here on this site about which fast-food chicken outlet has the best chicken/chicken sandwich. I've eaten chicken in just about every decent franchised chicken outlet in the eastern and western as well as the central United States and have found CFA to be the very best and that is why I look forward to frequenting CFA whenever the opportunity arises. I also enjoy their kitchen-cut fries. I don't eat their sandwiches - but I delight in their chicken strips which are lightly breaded and need no special sauce add-ons - but they do have them available.

As for a "sit-down" formal dining experience that serves chicken as one of their main specialties, I truly miss "The Original White Fence Farm" on Joliet Road near Romeoville, Illinois. I used to live about 4 miles from their location - they are extremely famous for their country style chicken, usually fried but also available in baked and broiled versions. Their side-dishes are to die for - especially their pickled beets with onions. Their pick-up area is always busy and now I understand that they deliver as well. The restaurant is in a picturesque farm-like roadside barn-like building with white fencing around its perimeter.

    I'm getting hungry - enough said! :);)B)

You do not want to try and one-up me on rainfall. B) I lived through Harvey, back in 2017. My rain gauge recorded more than 28 inches of rain in about 5 days. I say "more than" because the rain gauge overflowed more than once.

Interesting sidenote on Harvey. Some good did come out of that. I was working for Chevron at the time, and we were all instructed to stay home and work from home if possible. A solid week of work from home for many thousands of employees in the greater Houston area exposed many problems, mainly in the capacity and capability for remote VPN access. As a consequence, that capability was greatly enhanced, which stood us in good stead last year.

Fall of 1986. Big road trip for me and a friend - drove from California to Michigan and back. First day on the return trip we came across Michigan and drove through Chicago; it was my first time seeing the city.

We ended up stopping for the night in Romeoville - I always found it amusing that it was so close to Joliet. How Shakesperean! I believe we ate at the Shakey's in town, that night.

Thanks for the comments about vacation, everyone.

Random thoughts…..anyone starting a fight or threatening on a flight is immediately hauled off the plane and fined $1000 for each passenger on the plane who was inconvenienced by their actions. They are also prosecuted with a felony and given a mandatory jail sentence of at least 180 days. They are also banned from flying on any plane, any airline. Do not pass go and go directly to jail.

This is getting ridiculous. I used to fly over 100K miles/year for at least 2 to 3 decades. I never…I mean NEVER saw anything like I’ve seen the last 2-3 years. Saw obnoxious drunks, saw allegedly “privileged” individuals who thought they deserved the 1st class section and tried to raise a ruckus. But, never have I seen anyone accost crew or another passenger.

The lady in the video is obviously one, or maybe all, of the types of people I described above.

EV incentives……I’m ambivalent about these since, at least up until recently, I did not consider myself a potential EV customer. Now, I think my next vehicle will be an EV. If these incentives go through, maybe sooner than later. Oil for vehicle fuel is a dead end. Long term demand predictions are dismal, at best. The total market for oil is predicted to drop for the foreseeable future and never recover.

So, the move to EVs will hasten with the incentives. Good? Bad? I don’t know. It’s happening, though. Matter of fact, the EV F -150 seems to be a pretty exciting vehicle, and that’s the #1 volume vehicle in North America. And, we have to admit, a self driving Bolt is more than just a curiosity. You can buy one right now at your local Chevy store.

Vacations….again, the GF is the head of that dept. Although I had heard of FL’s Governor Desantis, I really didn’t know anything about him until the last 72 hours, and mostly the GF poking me and saying “look at this”.

So, he’s the guy who had his own health advisor for putting out the real COVID numbers in the State of FL that he wanted to hide? I guess more recently, he tried to ban anyone asking about COVID vaccines on a cruise ship? Not sure what he’s trying to accomplish, but all of that seems just a tad outlandish behavior. But, I guess he backed off the cruise industry’s desire to sail with COVID vaccinated passengers. Maybe he’s “seen the light”.

I’m all for the GF’s vacation plans, whatever they will be. Although I’m retired, she’s still working, and if nothing else, she deserves the break. I think the lates is something to do with St Martyn? She has my passport and my credit card (come to think of it, that might be dangerous). Whatever she decides, I’ll be happy to go along with, gladly.

I agree that something more than a slap on the wrist has to be done about these unruly airline passengers.

Now about your vacation. When all of it gets sorted out, that would be a good time to consider inviting a poster buddy. :s

Even more amusing since Joliet was originally named Juliet and Romeoville was originally named Romeo. So for a bit over a decade the villages of Romeo and Juliet were almost next to each other. Romeo was named after the Shakespearean character while Juliet was named after someone's daughter.

I feel so sad for Naomi Osaka who was bullied out of the French Open. I think the tournament officials are more concerned about photo ops and public relations rather than the mental health of the players.

Noami disclosed that she suffers from social anxiety and depression, yet no one believed her or cared enough to exempt her from the anxiety inducing press conferences that players are forced to do. Well, I'm glad she withdrew from their highfalutin tournament .

The problem is her manager and handlers should prepare her for facing interviews and helping her through her very real problem. If she has the desire to play at a high level in professional sports she has to be available for the press, for interviews, and be a role model as a sports celebrity....the fans and the league pay her huge prize money winnings, and they make it possible for her to play at the level she is able to play at. You can't name your own terms....and her managers should have been helping her through this.

While it is sad she had to do it but I wouldn't call it being bullied. The paths we take in life have certain duties and responsibilities that all that take that path have to perform. A high profile individual like her are expected to be in front of the press and speak to the public. While it may not be fair that she has anxieties that keep her from performing these duties expecting her to do what everyone else is expected to do is not bullying. Especially if you know, or should know, that it is expected of you.

maybe it is a requirement of the tournament to attend a press conference (though of course that can be worked around in a special circumstance). But no one needs to be a "role model" (and really, expecting that to be pro athletes is an odd idea to start with IMO).

Just do what some of the other sport guys do (NBA I think). Sit there in a hoodie, mumble 1 syllable answers, and bolt as soon as you are done!

We made it back home today in 10.5 hours- not bad for 638 miles, considering that I wasn't able to consolidate the fuel and lunch stops. The navigation system put us on a two lane for about an hour to avoid a massive traffic jam. We have learned to disregard the route changes at our peril, as the system almost always has a very good reason for rerouting. Fuel economy averaged over 30 mpg on the interstate, 27 mpg driving around Seabrook island. The 2er is just a great Junior GT.

It was the farmers plowing up the land 150 years ago that stopped the plagues of those critters. Now that housing developments are the rule you see them making a comeback. Maybe you should get your rototiller out or a mule and plow if you want to be eco friendly. :)

It must be very difficult for a person who has social anxiety to hold an interview, hard for us to imagine. Most people would rather die than speak in front of a large crowd.
But, being a pro athlete means more than just playing the game....we have to get real. There are media outlets that make money from sponsors who want interviews to boost ratings, news and sports media who fill their pages or websites with news to maintain excitement...there is a need to make money from advertisers. A player can't just play tennis extremely well and then leave the court, being a professional athlete means more than doing that. Her trainers should have been preparing her, and if she explained she can't deal with tough stuff and she is trying I think most interviewers would understand. Look at Nadal, the guy has serious OCD issues and yet he has learned to deal with it in public and he gives great interviews.
I'd probably be a pro tennis player but I am way too shy :)

    Pick your poison --
Most cicadas go through a lifecycle that lasts from two to five years. Some species have much longer lifecycles, such as the North American genus, Magicicada, which has a number of distinct " broods " that go through either a 17-year, or in some parts of the region, a 13-year lifecycle.

The typical mouse life cycle will vary, but typically lasts about two years indoors, which can be a problem for residents. Mice cause both damage and the spread of disease, problems made much worse by their high birth rate. On average, an adult female mouse can have over 60 babies in one year.

It was the farmers plowing up the land 150 years ago that stopped the plagues of those critters. Now that housing developments are the rule you see them making a comeback. Maybe you should get your rototiller out or a mule and plow if you want to be eco friendly. :)

Strangely enough, I have plowed with a mule. My grandfather had a small truck farm (8 acres), and I grew up next door. Plowing wasn't that bad, as a kid I sort of enjoyed it. You wouldn't want to do it from sunup to sundown, but for a few hours in the spring, not too bad. What I disliked was weeding and grubbing potatoes. Stoop labor sucks.

Hyundai planning 3-month Subscription (try-before-you-buy program) for Ioniq 5 EV.

"Hyundai is planning to launch a try-before-you-buy program to boost sales of the recently-unveiled Ioniq 5.
Essentially, Hyundai is tentatively planning to offer what can be summarized as a short-term lease.

Eligible drivers who are considering buying an Ioniq 5 (pictured above) but aren't sure if they can live with the range and charging limitations of an electric car will be able to spend up to three months in one to try it out. Hyundai will collect payments corresponding to the use of the car, insurance, and what little maintenance is needed on a nearly new EV."

Talk about learning something new every day in here. I never knew there were farms that grew trucks. Thanks for the info, @oldfarmer50 never told us that. :s

You may not have seen it in Automotive News, but over the last two decades a significant body of research has developed around the societal costs of commuting.

Ha! You should come to Cincinnati.
True! But, I'm thinking these critters will be gone in another week. Pretty loud in my neighborhood. But, there are also a lot of trees, too.

Wow....pretty nice looking for an EV....at least it looks more like a normal car.
Great idea if you are in the market, trade in your current car at Carmax and get todays trade-in value, try the Ioniq for a few months, if you like it buy it, if not use it to look at other cars.

My workplace is trying to be back in the office by August. At least 5 people have already resigned, and the org I work for is not huge. It's going go be interesting to see if old guard C-suiters die on the hill of having butts in seats/office culture/sunk cost fallacy re: facilities, or if they will be forced, some kicking and screaming, to adapt.

Personally, I wouldn't complain if I went in a couple times a week, just to drive the car I am paying for, to socialize, and have a change of pace, but 5x per week does seem incredibly wasteful. Even my boss has openly admitted there will be an actual decrease in productivity once people return.

Is that pic of a concept or full-on production? I always fear the real world design being dumbed down a notch.

Something very 50s about that side strake, but I don't mind it.
