Really? So your saying waiting years is normal in Canada for a surgery? I'm curious how many dollars per patient it costs in Canada vs. the US. I have a feeling we "pay more" in the US. But do we get more?
One of the biggest complaints of "Socialized Medicine" is wait times. The wait times for many specialists or procedures cam be years. One thing is they have to keep costs down and that mean rationing health care. Sure we pay more for Healthcare but we have nowhere near the wait times that some countries have.
If not for the fraudulent lottery-like pricing scheme in medical services, US system would actually have been quite bearable. There are other serious problems, but if anybody else billed the way medical institutions do, they'd be subject to RICO charges. A quick glance at "explanation of benefits" shows how big fraud it is, especially in any kind of diagnostics, from blood test to big machine scans. The ratio between amount "billed" and amount "allowed" (contracted by the insurance) can often be north 20:1, which is paid either by you or the insurance, depending whose turn it is in the deductible scheme. So some poor soul that does not have insurance is billed 20-30 times higher than insured patient/company. Nobody will convince that it's not fraud when somebody claims an official price is X for, but they are fine with taking just five percent of X if you have "proper references". That's jackpot billing.

I think you hired a phony. If I were you I’d peek outside a few times to make sure he’s doing all hand nailing and not cheating with an air nailer for half the job.

Driver, like with any tool, it’s the user not the tool that makes a difference. If a pro uses a good quality nailer, the correct way, results are fine. The air gun just makes it quicker for a slacker to do a poor job, but they just as easily can do a lousy job hand nailing.
I’d bet it isn’t so much the hammer that makes a difference, rather that only a real old school expert would be doing it.
Putting on lug nuts with an impact wrench is the same concept.
Stick, agree, Unless the guy knows what he is doing it would be better to air hammer them, at least you will have some control over what is being done (even I could probably air hammer). This guy has been doing roofs for 40 years.....I think he knows the feel of the hammer. We had 3 recommendations plus checked online reviews. I could be wrong, he could have a bad day, but if he is as good as he seems I think hand hammering is superior....but not always available. This is the idea; You know something else. He has all the various shingles in stock, he was ready to go in 36 hours, he can remove the phony dormers (he has carpenters on staff), he is completely organized, ground sheets, clean ups, trucks come and go on time - all coordinated. This isn't a job for amateurs, it makes a big difference to know what you are doing!

Looking for short cuts huh......honest workers don't do that He probably pays all his taxes too!
One thing I wanted to add about hand nailing and air nailing......air nailing is fine and I would have no problem with it if the roofer has a good reputation. In fact, it may become impossible to find hand nail guys in the future. From what I have read and heard hand nailing brings a little more skill to the job, but the guy has to be good. If the hand nailing guy had a bad night or too many drinks the night before, then the air guy might do a better job.
Sounds like back peddling to me.
jmonroe
Not really, just sane and rational. The mistake was in taking sides and making it into a big deal. I am saying both methods, hand or air hammering get good results, from what I have heard and read a good hand nailer has to have better skills.....real skills so I would say he is going to do a better more refined job.....but, the air hammer guy if he is good can come close....and it isn't a big enough factor to insist on hand hammer....but if I have a choice I would choose Hand over Air. At least I take the sane rational approach instead of being pig headed

I wasn’t sure how to talk about this, without getting into trouble with the moderators. So I will just proceed directly and try to use medical / scientific terminology. I have been on medicine for high blood pressure for more than 3 years (Losartin, Coreg). One of the common side effects is sexual dysfunction in males. I talked to my cardiologist and asked if it were safe for me to use Viagra. She much preferred a daily dose of Cialis (tadalafil), stating that it has some beneficial side effects as well. Those beneficial side effects include helping with the effects of an enlarged prostrate.
Unfortunately, it seems that almost no insurance will cover a prescription for Cialis. And without insurance, a 3-month supply is $791. Looking around, I found a site in India which sells these drugs by mail. I was able to purchase 120 pills, 20 mg, for $197. That included shipping from India and an international money transfer fee. The most common daily dose of Cialis is 5 mg, which was what my cardiologist prescribed. Taking the one hundred twenty 20 mg pills, cutting them twice with a pill cutter, gives me 480 daily doses of 5 mg each.
My apologies if this breaks any rules, or offends anyone. My intent was to help anyone in a similar situation.
If we’re discussing medications what difference does it make what you’re taking it for.
Anyway, I’d be wary with buying any medicine from a foreign source. I’ve read horror stories about sloppy manufacturing, inaccurate doses (too high, not high enough) and outright fraud.

I haven't done much roofing, but I have been told that lugging the shingles from the ground up to the roof is the hardest part of the job. Sounds like a conveyor belt might be a good idea. Depending on cost, and how much time and trouble to transport and set up the machinery.
Man, you don’t want to lug full packs of shingles up a ladder. When I did roofing I could just manage maybe half a pack if I was feeling frosty.

I’m trying to send as many cases to felony mediation that I can; I’d rather spend several hours in a mediation than several days at trial. Still, some victims can be so unreasonable. I have one case that the defense attorney wants to mediate because his client thinks he’s going to skate on the charges. The attorney thinks his client needs to hear a retired judge tell him that there’s a good chance he’s going to spend 20+ years in the pen. My victim refuses to mediate- “I WANT TO GO TO TRIAL!!!” is what she screamed at my assistant. I’m afraid that she isn’t going to come across as a very sympathetic witness, but if she wants to go to trial I won’t have much choice. In theory I can work the case out however I want but in reality my judge won’t accept a plea unless law enforcement and/or the vic are onboard with it. So I’ll just go to trial and if she’s unhappy with the outcome it’s on her.
She sounds like a person who has a history of making bad choices.

I understand your concerns, indeed I shared them. But this has worked out quite well, the drugs come in sealed packaging which appears to be 100% legitimate, and works exactly as expected. I think everyone knows that we pay quite a bit too much for prescriptions here in the USA.
Do you remember Hot In Cleveland, a great TV show with Betty White and Valerie Bertinelli? Betty and her friend were running a drug smuggling operation, bringing in prescription drugs from Canada to help people in Cleveland who could not afford their medication. If you're a fan of the writer John Sandford, one of the Prey novels is centered around a group of nuns (or ex nuns) who are doing exactly the same thing.

I had a few bundles of shingles in my garage that were there for quite a few years. When I decided to get rid of them, I put a bundle at a time in my trunk and took it to the dumpster at the baseball field. I didn't like picking them up.

I always hand nailed when I did roofing. Although when it came to replacing the original roof on my house I used my finger.....and called the guy. I was up on the second story with a pruning saw trimming branches the other day and I realized installing shingles up there was not for me any more. Funny how when I was 30 I was invulnerable but now I’ve lost the ability to take a 20 foot fall.

@henryn I have the same concerns as oldfarmer. Canada and the U.S. have certain standards for drugs, they have to be tested and approved before being sold....laws are harsh if you are making or selling counterfeit drugs. Many countries, not so much, and the fraudsters can copy the packaging perfectly. I don't even know if it is legal for you to be importing these drugs....I assume you probably aren't using a real prescription. OTOH, they could be legit because many countries sell the same drugs for less....but, I don't think it is something you want to risk.

In all fairness, the situation she was in was in no way her fault(an armed robbery) but she was not injured. Traumatic? No question, but I think mediation would get us the same result as going to trial- and she wouldn't have to spend 1-2 hours on the stand getting grilled on cross.

Thanks for sharing that info on Ford. I was a little surprised to see the Lincoln brand sales are up despite the chip shortage and high gas prices moderating SUV sales. Also, glad to see Ford's EV line, including the Mach E, doing well. With more targeted tax credits one should expect more robust sales in electrified vehicles in the months and years ahead.

I am not a doctor but here are my two cents. Take your doctor's advice. For your particular situation Cialis appears to be the better, albeit more expensive choice. Unfortunately, Cialis is not covered by most Medicare and insurance plans, but manufacturer and pharmacy coupons can help offset the cost. So look into that.
If that option is still too expensive I would consider switching or adjusting blood pressure medications. Never heard of Coreg but Losartan is well known for effectively treating hypertension and to help protect the kidneys from damage, and it is also used to lower the risk of strokes in patients with high blood pressure and an enlarged heart. However, I would refrain from buying imported drugs no matter the extravagant claims of the seller or importer. Safety should be your paramount concern. And by the way, getting a second opinion is always a good insurance policy. Cest' tout.
Here is a review and test drive of the GV70 by my favorite reviewer Asian Petrolhead. Oh, what a good looking man (yes, I have man crush) who can actually drive "hard" and fast yet look good doing it. He likes the 2.5 liter turbo instead of the 3.3 L. Great looking car overall, I only wish the 3-spoke steering wheel was used in the standard model. If you insist on the 3-sopke steering wheel, you will have to move up to the sport model that is a $3,500 upgrade. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYuhPqAsGwc

@bwia Thanks for posting....I watched all 12 minutes and it was refreshing.....Asian Petrohead touched on all the main points I would be interested in. I love that GV70, and it should come in at about $45 to $60k USD probably.....seems like a bargain for all the features on the SUV.

Funny you. bring that up. I'm empathetic, but from the client point of view.
This is in a Domestic Relations case and in Hamilton County, OH. My best friend's wife, who has children (and grandchildren) from a previous marriage, is estranged from her daughter. Sad situation, as these things are heart wrenching. Anyway, she wants visitation with her Grandchildren. Not unreasonable, except the Grandchildren do not want to spend time with her. Not sure the reasoning, as it doesn't matter.
I'm a character witness for them during a magistrate's hearing. I'm doing it as a favor to my best friend, not her, as I understand why there is a divide between her and her daughter/grandkids. We were sitting outside the Magistrate's chambers for a hearing about the matter last week. Her lawyer was trying to set expectations, telling the Grandmother that her daughter and Grandchildren don't want to grant the visitation requests. As such, the Magistrate will likely rule in favor of the Grandchildren.
Not good enough. Best friends wife wants her "say" in front of the Magistrate. Her lawyer called me for testimony first. "Yes, from what I know she would not harm the Grandchildren. Yes, my best friend would be a good 'Step-Grandfather'. But no, I have nothing untoward to say about the Daughter or Grandchildren". Grandchildren testify next, and it didn't go well for the Grandmother. Magistrate rules there is no visitation allowed due to the Grandhchildrens' wishes.
Best friend's wife goes ballistic and pretty much seals her fate that she'll NEVER get visitation rights as a result.
One of my best friends is in the market for 2 new vehicles - one for his wife and one for himself. Both current vehicles are over 10 years old. He is interested in the Genesis GV80 SUV with the 3.5 V6 Twin Turbo for his wife and a Genesis G90 3.3 V6 Twin Turbo for himself. He is beginning his search with his wife this coming week. I strongly suggested that he makes sure his wife test drives the GV80 for at least 3-4 hours before making a final decision. The SUV weighs over 5000 pounds which is pretty heavy for a slight woman like his wife. She currently drives a Honda Pilot which is smaller than the GV80. The Genesis dealer where I bought my G90 has quite a bit of inventory on the the SUV. As for the G90 for him, inventories are very sparse in the 3.3 liter version (365 hp) throughout South Florida, so I told him if he is serious about the G90, he needs to make a decision fairly quickly in order to get one in a color combination he will be happy with.
If he gets a G90, it will be the second close friend of mine who has purchased a G90 after I got mine. Interesting!
Like I've mentioned previously, the reason the Genesis line looks more German than Asian has to do with the chief designer for Genesis who worked for German manufacturers for quite some time.

I hate the GSP, especially the section around the ACE merge. So we always cut off and go down 50 instead. depending on the time and traffic might not be quicker, but we like it better! And for you, just grab 9 where it crosses (at GSP exit 20 I think).
New scam this morning. Phone call wakes me up, automated woman’s voice says something like, “This is Molly from Amazon. There has been a suspected fraudulent charge for $700 on your Amazon account. Press 1 to speak to a representative.”
Being half asleep I almost pressed 1 before it hit me. “Charge on my Amazon account? You can’t charge on an Amazon account!” The bad thing, I have now received about 9 or 10 of these calls over a period of about 2 hours. Exact same automated message. And I can’t block the number, as it changes every time. All showing 281 area code (local), but different number each time.
If I could reach the person responsible, I might just test the limits on justifiable homicide.
I should have paid better attention to the discussions about washers and dryers as my electric dryer froze a bearing several hours ago. I know nothing about dryers and have even less interest in researching them as my shirts drip from a makeshift clothesline in the basement. So I called up Lowe’s where we usually get out appliances. Bad idea. Phone to the appliance rang for 10 minutes before getting switched to customer service where I was put on hold for another 20. Hung up and called Home Depot where after a little run around I got a great older guy (probably former appliance store owner put out of business by the big box) who took great care of me.
I had them take care of delivery, installation and removal of the old unit. In the old days I would have taken the truck to the store, wrestled the dryer on and off, installed all the plugs and then dragged the old one to the dump. I realized that I’d rather throw some money at stuff like that now.

@abacomike His wife may like the GV70 even more since she is used to the Pilot. Might as well compare it. As to the G90.....Genesis is matching everything the Europeans can do, and doing it for less. One guy I know traded in his Mercedes that had 250k miles on it, and the repair bills were OK but they started coming in frequently near the end. He bought a friends Lexus and he really likes it....and he likes paying regular prices for oil changes and service work...instead of premium prices.
@henryn I keep getting one from the tax department saying if I don't pay what I owe they could put me in prison. It seems that they spring up as fast as they shut them down. I'd like to have a ultra high frequency defense system that blow their equipment up.
Interesting ride to the shore last night. We usually leave around 4, and then check into work one last time and then cook.
Last night we decided to have dinner at 5:30 at a local Hibachi place and then head down. This meant traffic on the AC Expressway was lighter than normal (that changed on the Parkway but that’s normal too).
So I’m in the middle lane floating between 77-80 (65 SL). Light blue Range Rover flys around the right of me at well over 100. Then proceeds to cut of the Tahoe in the left lane. Well.... what do you think happened? Nope didn’t get pulled over but rear ended a previous generation RAV4. Idiot.
Going back around 20 or 25 years, they opened up a new “spaghetti bowl” just south of downtown Houston. Three separate freeways came together, merged, then split. Unbelievably crazy traffic, coming in on one side and trying to exit on the opposite side within a half mile or so. During peak traffic hours, it was a parking lot. Middle of the day, a mad house. Timid drivers trying to slow down to make a lane change, brave (foolhardy?) drivers trying to accelerate to make a lane change. Hundreds of cars per minute, at an average speed of 50 or 60 mph. With a great variance on that speed.
I’m coming through this in the middle of the day, with my eyes peeled trying to scan 360 degrees. An older worn out looking rusty Toyota comes up behind me doing at least 20mph faster than I am. He runs right up on my bumper, and then jerks right to go around me. Unfortunately for him, there is a stalled dump truck in that lane. It was truly amazing that traffic was getting around that stalled dump truck in the middle of about 5 lanes of traffic at close to 50 mph.
The Toyota did not make it around the dump truck. He did not have a chance to swerve or apply the brakes. It was an horrific thing to see.

Good man...you get to the stage in life when you don't want to waste time if someone else can do it....at a reasonable price. So do you know what brand or model you got?....or do you care? Sorry, I couldn't find a picture of a guy doing the laundry...

And to think this probably all started because of me.
On a similar note, back in ‘09 not too long after I got my first Genny, my late middle brother and SIL who lived in Delray Beach came for a visit and we were at my youngest brothers place for a cookout. Of course a conversation about cars started with my middle brother saying the lease on his wife’s car was about to end but his wife couldn’t find a car she liked. Drove the standard luxo cars but either didn’t like them or didn’t like the deals that were being offered. But figured they’d just have to take the best deal that was offered on whichever one she liked best. She was verklempt.
Son #1 offered her a test ride in my newish Genny. She liked it and went so far as to say she’d look into getting one. I thought she was just trying to be nice. Nope, about 2 weeks later she leased one. About a week after she had it they went to a social gathering at the club house at the over 55 community they lived in. My brother said they weren’t hardly in the door when someone said, “I see you got her a Bentley”. He corrected the guy and then several of them went to the parking lot to give it a further look. Even one of their wives went along. He ended up giving test rides to all of them. Not too long after that 2 of those folks bought a Genny and 2 neighbors also bought/leased a Genny. I think my SIL is now on her 4 th or 5 th Genny. In my hood a Genny is a pretty rare sighting in parking lots but when I visit my Delray Beach SIL , Genney’s are a dime a dozen in parking lots down there. But I’m sure you know that.
Yes, I know, I’m ahead of the curve on things like this.

I have been contemplating buying a new gas clothes dryer. The old one is taking longer to dry a load, and when I wash a Queen comforter, it takes more than 2 hours to dry. The first thing I need to do is check the vents, all the way up to the roof. A few years back, the top of the vent stack became clogged, and I paid a local handyman to climb up on the roof and clear it out.
But I would like to have a bigger dryer. My present unit is not large enough inside for that Queen comforter to tumble as it should. After running the dryer for an hour (max timer), the comforter is rather balled up, dry on the outside, still quite damp on the inside. Cleaning the vents is not going to help with that. The problem is that I don't know how big my present unit is, so I might think I'm buying a bigger unit when in fact I'm getting a smaller one.
I guess I need to pull the dryer out from the wall, get behind it and clean out the vent and the ducting. From there (back side) I might be able to find a model number and then learn how large this unit is.
@henryn, Around here, dryer are vented through the side of the house.
That varies. My next door neighbor, same home builder, built same year, about 90% same house, vents through the garage wall. Mine vents through the roof.

May 2021 Auto Sales Data.
I've been doing a little research for May 2021 auto sales data but unfortunately no monthly information is available for domestic auto makers. What gives? Apparently, only quarterly sales figures for are provided for domestics while foreign makes provide both monthly and quarterly sales data. I know one month worth of data does not a trend make but it would be helpful to people who follow such things.
True - if you only use one source and it has incomplete information.

Cest' tout.
They obviously targeted the Macan with that design.

Great looking car overall, I only wish the 3-spoke steering wheel was used in the standard model. If you insist on the 3-sopke steering wheel, you will have to move up to the sport model that is a $3,500 upgrade.

You can’t charge on an Amazon account!” The bad thing, I have now received about 9 or 10 of these calls over a period of about 2 hours. Exact same automated message.
