Which refrigerator brand is better, LG or Samsung?
LG is better, though some people still report issues with parts and service availability. But in 7 years (knock wood) we have not needed any repairs on ours. Samsung seems to be the one to stay away from.
speaking of appliances, we stopped at another store and managed to finally see all the options we were looking at. The Frigidaire was nicer in person than we expected. Might just end up going with that one to economize. though the Whirlpool we were originally going to get before the repair guy turned us off to them in person also looked nice.
will decide Monday when the appliance guy gets back to us with timing to even get the LG.

I rolled the dice on an LG a couple months ago. I've read horror stories about the linear compressors, but also heard they've solved some issues in recent production. Fridge was bought with a few other LGs for the new house (already had a nearly new Bosch dishwasher - not replacing that) people love the LG gas range for some reason, I get compliments about it.
that's what we found researching DWs recently. read the reviews, and every one is not worth buying. and visiting a few stores, one guy likes brand X, and the other guy hates it. So what you get probably depends on who you talk to! If we started at the place we went today would still be getting a WP delivered next month! About the only constant is don't get a Samsung.
LG, that usually was not a function issue, just support. So makes sense that the guy who was fine with them was also the authorized service center!
Although not a post about my dishwasher (Whirlpool) which is an upscale model and is great), I'' mention my Whirlpool refrigerator. A summer or so back we had an odd icing or snow problem. Had the A-Z Appliance Repair come out under 5 year warranty by Lowes. Couldn't find anything wrong...
I have decided my wife or I had not gotten the freezer door shut completely and that caused the strange snow formation problem. One time months back I caught the door not quite completely shut because some food item was blocking it with a little resistance.
The repairman was right in the end. He felt a door had not been shut causing the whole thing to warm and have moisture go in which then showed as a snowy frost on the refrigerator air inlet.
Just like with cars, if you have a dealer who is very good at working with customers to achieve satisfaction even if the manufacturer won't, the service company in your area for the appliance brand, along with the manufacturer's backing them, makes all the difference in what you can and should buy.

When I got my ‘15 Genny the Genesis guru that was explaining the cars features came to the point where he wanted my CC number. When I asked why I got some phony answer but eventually I gave it to him anyway. It turned out the only reason he wanted it was so that Hyundai’s Blue Link would be connected so that I would have about 6 months free use of that service that included remote start plus a handful of other worthless junk. Then the card would be hit to continue the service. He didn’t say that but I knew that’s what was going to happen.
Even though I told him I didn’t want any of that stuff he said once I tried the remote start feature, through my phone, I’d never want to be without it. Son #1 was now in the office as all of this was going on and he said, “dad, give it a try it’s free. See how it works. You don’t have to keep it”. Even though he knew if I said NO, I wasn’t going to use it. Finally, his mother said, “can we get out of here already. Just give him the card number. You know, you just might like it”.
Never used it even once. When the day comes that I’m afraid to get into a hot or cold car that’s the day they can box me up for the long journey.

There isn’t a single brand that you don’t hear a horror story about.
True. The key is to have 25+ year old appliances. Ask me how I know. I realize that most on here would rather be drawn and quartered, but there you go.
at the Honda dealer today looking at the Si (manual trans of course) the sales guy (younger, maybe still 20s, possibly 30ish) was pointing out some things different on the Si vs. regular Civic. some of it was manual related (things the safety nannies didn't do). But his big thing he just had to point out was it did not come with remote start.
when I told him I did not care because I would never use it anyway, he looked like I told him his mother was a wildebeest. He just could not understand anyone that did not think this was the greatest invention ever, and wanted to use it all the time.
I might have broken his spirit entirely if I told him I also never use auto climate either.

For fear of jinxing the Maytag washer we inherited from my Mother when we moved back to the Burgh in ‘97 from SC, I’d tell you how old it is but I won’t. So, I’m going to give you guys a hint, it was bought in the middle of a decade that began with an 8.

The power didn't even flicker; our power line runs directly to a substation about two miles away. If that line is intact we get power as soon as the substation is online. As for water, we have a cistern, so if we have power we have water.

Re:remote start
I’ve in the past said I don’t use it… well I really don’t use it now since we have the garage and WFH. BUT, In the summer once we pack up all our beach gear I start the car with the phone and when we get to it to load our stuff it’s all nice and cool.
Is this a scam? I get a notice from Legacy.com with a candle on it and it says "John Doe" has died. Do you want to leave a message or donate for a tree. The name sounds familiar but I don't really know who this guy is. Legacy.com is a real company. I looked on their site and they don't list any John Does. It is probably a scam but if it is it is very clever, it makes you curious to know who John Doe is!

I watched the Canadian Consumer Show Marketplace and the horror stories about Samsung refrigerators, so I would never buy one. One woman's new fridge made huge puddles on the floor from day one and Samsung would just ignore her. We like Bosche DWs and they have performed well, though expect them to die around year 7. We have a Maytag in Florida and it does a good job, a bit noisier and the spacing arrangement is not as well thought out as the Bosche if that matters to you. The Bosche one has various sizes so you can pack in more small dishes, whereas the Maytags are all the same.

We had the same problem with our 11 yr old Bosch, a couple months ago. Thought we had left the door open, and some of the ice started melting in the freezer.
Found out a couple weeks later, that wasn't the case. The compressor was failing, and the ice melting left a trail that forced the door open a crack.
Fortunately, our dealer had one (1) in stock, and delivered the next day.
A first for me yesterday. The ATS had been in the garage since Wednesday, as overnight Thursday we were getting big snow. Sure enough, we got 14" here, but I didn't need to go anywhere Thursday or Friday, so my guy dug things out and I stayed put. Friday morning the temp was -11C (somewhere in the teens Fahrenheit) but then during the day a new system moved in (related to the awful one that spawned the tornadoes in the US) and things really warmed up.
Saturday morning I had to get some groceries so I pulled it out of the garage into mild temps that by now were on the plus side of the equation and with very humid air. The car was still very, very cold and the second I began heading down the street every window instantly fogged up, to the point that I had to pull over. I literally could not see a thing. At first I thought it was on the inside of the glass but soon realized it was on the outside, and the wipers at least let me see where I was going. Side windows down let me see to make turns. In a few minutes things finally normalized. Wild.
I think I just got the same scam text that driver100 was talking about. It says:
WAL shipment tracking: Hi, your package with shipping numberPA386Z12 is waiting for you to check the shipping address: dreadprovide.com/rQuMky7.

There have been so many data breaches out there over the last couple of years, I’m surprised more haven’t been targeted. I know as soon as I change a password, I get a message that it’s been found in another data breach a month later.
I know my cell phone number must have been involved in one of those breaches. As I get the scam texts on my iPhone, too. I should change my phone number, but I’ve had it so long I am reluctant.

I've seen firms that refurbish vintage appliances, stuff from the 30s-60s. That would be cool to have especially if in a period house, but they weren't inexpensive. I went to a yard sale a few years ago and spotted a 30s monitor top fridge, pristine condition, owner said it ran silently and always stayed cold. I was sorely tempted to take it home, but no place to put it. My grandma got maybe 45 years out of a fridge and wall oven, only replaced because seals and a few plastic parts gave out, and replacements didn't exist. When the house sold earlier this year, it still had the original countertop range and hood, almost 60 years later, with the garage beer fridge of similar age also still purring like new.
My mom bought a house this summer, and it included appliances. The fridge is ~20 years old, odd as the house had a to the studs remodel maybe 10 years ago. My mom kept it, saying she likes it (but replaced the stove, as she dislikes the flat burner type).
There isn’t a single brand that you don’t hear a horror story about.

My sentiment exactly. I have two cars new enough that they possibly have remote start. One stays in the garage so it’s never cold. The other is parked just outside the door so it’s no problem to step out and start it to defrost. So I’ve never had to use remote start.

I seldom disclose my cell number but with my medical issues recently it has gone out to several new places. I have now gotten a number of what I assume are scam text messages saying that I have received an e-transfer and to click the message for details.
When the day comes that I’m afraid to get into a hot or cold car that’s the day they can box me up for the long journey.

when I told him I did not care because I would never use it anyway, he looked like I told him his mother was a wildebeest.

I’ve heard Samsung will fix it, but not sure I apply because I’m not the original owner (came with house)
Re:remote start
I’ve in the past said I don’t use it… well I really don’t use it now since we have the garage and WFH. BUT, In the summer once we pack up all our beach gear I start the car with the phone and when we get to it to load our stuff it’s all nice and cool.

I don’t know why our so-called justice system doesn’t just get rid of these people when they’re convicted. Seems to be a waste of money keeping them incarcerated forever.
He is very acerbic these days. They should probably lock up and throw away the key for tax cheats too.

Found out a couple weeks later, that wasn't the case. The compressor was failing, and the ice melting left a trail that forced the door open a crack.
Fortunately, our dealer had one (1) in stock, and delivered the next day.

Wild.

I know my cell phone number must have been involved in one of those breaches. As I get the scam texts on my iPhone, too. I should change my phone number, but I’ve had it so long I am reluctant.
Good news, iPhOS allows you to hide your email address when one is required. I know that feature alone has cut down on email spam by about 75%.

My mom bought a house this summer, and it included appliances. The fridge is ~20 years old, odd as the house had a to the studs remodel maybe 10 years ago. My mom kept it, saying she likes it (but replaced the stove, as she dislikes the flat burner type).
It seems like a remote start with a manual transmission could end poorly if you forget to leave it in neutral….

My sentiment exactly. I have two cars new enough that they possibly have remote start. One stays in the garage so it’s never cold. The other is parked just outside the door so it’s no problem to step out and start it to defrost. So I’ve never had to use remote start.
