A guy at tennis has a Cadillac SUV....I think it is about a 2012. He took it to the dealer and it needed a new electronic module....cost $1000. Before that, a headlight went, and when it goes you need a complete unit that includes a little motor that turns the lens as you turn the corner....replacement was $900. It cost about $400 to get the electronic trunk closing feature fixed...lots of wires to bypass. He decided his next car will be a Subaru....he has heard good things from friends - reliable and inexpensive to run.

The last year for the Northstar V8 was 2011, so this being a 2012, he's safe. At least from head gasket issues.

switched to the 3.6l, so now just has to worry about timing set failures!

I took his comment as a joke how subarus aren’t exactly bulletproof
Ah, that's right, Subarus were at one time known for head gasket issues. I had completely forgotten about that. I've never owned one, and never knew anyone who owned one.
Wait, I take that back. I had a neighbor once upon a time who owned a Subaru.
Was down in Hollywood (Florida) tonight visiting cousins from New York who were staying at the Seminole Hard Rock Guitar Hotel. They invited me up to their suite and it was amazing. How they constructed that Guitar shaped hotel must have been some undertaking. We then had dinner at the steakhouse restaurant and did a little slot machine gambling - I won $165 which made the evening even nicer.
The restaurant and the casino were jammed with people and the blackjack tables were filled with gamblers. It was a nice experience and the evening was enjoyable getting to see my cousins for the first time in many years.

One data point: My son's 2012 Forester with 135K miles needed a head gasket, just a few months ago. Given my son's maintenance habits, the mechanic suggested he trade it in for another car, as he was worried what else he might find, once he pulled the head.

In ordinary times, I would expect a 10 year old car with a blown head gasket to have close to nil trade in value. Of course, these aren't ordinary times so it's probably worth some inordinate amount.
Reminds me of my mom's 3.8 Taurus, which lost a head gasket at 80K (a miracle it made it that long, it seems). Her indy mechanic told her to walk away and get another car. She went to team Toyota and never looked back.

My former boss had an early 2000s Legacy. The head gasket did not fail, but at around 40K-50K miles it developed the dreaded piston slap. She just lived with it until it was dumped eventually.
Those winnings were gone the moment I won them - I paid for the tip at the restaurant which, given the fact that the tab was over $800 which included wine and champagne, the tip was almost all the winnings.

There is a coal powered generating plant several miles away from me. I go by it a few times a month and you can see the pile of coal they use get bigger and smaller as the coal is used and replenished.
Yes, coal still produces about 25% of our electricity, natural gas about 40%.
I might have been over alarmed in TTS land; codes indicate a likely issue with prematurely failing spark plugs, and the computer doesn't like high-boost and tunes and hard acceleration with a malfunctioning spark plug.
Remember my A3, I'm crossing fingers that's all it is (and perhaps ignition coils?). Cheap fix.

had a productive day with DIY projects on the Maverick. Managed to get the radio software updated OTA (some people were reporting so glitchiness and freezing. I never had any). So that is up to date now. And confirmed that the messing around I did with iTunes and MediaMonkey to organize a bunch of old music libraries worked. Now have 2,000 songs on my phone and 2,900 on a USB stick that I can elect from the source menu. So between that and FM I should find something to listen to, even in the boonies!
then I finally installed the bed gasket I bought. I goes around the back of the bed and seals up the space between the bed and the tailgate to keep water out. Couldn't see any light so that seemed to be a success. Last project (to finish tomorrow) is I found an old camp mat in the basement (never used) that I am going to put in as a bed mat. Save me knees when I have to get in there, and keep stuff from sliding around or scratching my spray in liner.
Anyone have any ideas for things to do in Long Beach CA? Wife will be out there for business the week of the 28th so we decided to spend the weekend together before the show she is attending.
We made reservations for dinner one night and were just planning to wing it, but wasn’t sure if some of you have been there before.

I was joking about the Subaru but I guess more recent models no longer blew head gaskets either.

Otherwise I think it will just be a relaxing few days.
I went to Long Beach about 40 years ago. All I saw was a bunch of oil refineries.....I have no idea why anyone would go there for a vacation.....but supposedly they do.

It’s been a long time since I was out that way. Early 90’s IIRC. Why not let her do a little shopping down Rodeo Drive. I did that with Mrs. j once. Only took a couple months to pay it off. Then tour Beverly Hills home of the stars. The map only cost about 5 bucks back then. Waaaay cheaper than Rodeo Drive.
