Mentioned I have a “collection” of watches that were either gifted to me or I inherited (Tags, Omega, Ball). I used to wear a Swatch watch before I got the Apple Watch. I will wear the “nicer” watches on occasion. Told my son that he could pick any watch out of my collection to wear now, but eventually he’d get them all.

He chose a Seiko. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

My son has an Apple Watch but last year he bought a Tag Heuer because he liked mine.

so the guy (overseas) selling one for $777 is a bit ambitious?

Absolutely bonkers, I would say. There's one on Ebay for $95, and I would call that "ambitious". (We're talking about the old Sony receiver here).

I just had to deal with a dead AC unit. Ended up replacing just the compressor (part under warranty). I got a few quotes on a new unit.

IIRC range was about $3,600 for about a 14 SEER outside unit only (or $5,200 to also replace the inside coil). From my preferred company.

2nd company (they were more of a ripoff I think) was in the 6-9 range for in and out unit parts depending on capacity 14-15 I think) and single or dual stage. More expensive stuff was Lennox.

Note this was keeping the existing furnace and all the vents and piping.

When is the sale of your home scheduled to close? Exciting times!
Tentatively closing 7/29 on the new one, and 8/5 on the old one. Buts it’s like pulling teeth to get firm dates. The lawyers, etc seem to think they can just schedule what’s convenient for them at the last minute. Meanwhile I have to lock in a mover now or I’ll be up the creek with no paddle. Or boat.

Local move, not as big a deal. Long distance, very big deal.

Not at all tempted to sell it, however...

My daughter lived in London for a few years. She said I should put a 10 pound note in my pocket. Then if a thief a sks for my money bike him the 10 pounds, he may not realize I have a wallet on me.

In Europe I only wear cargo pants, the ones with zipper pockets on the knees. A friend's wife got a purse with metal in the straps, so thieves can't slice the strap and get away on foot or bike.

We don't want to end up homeless, like we did when we built this house(mostly our fault).

I know I've told this story before. When I sold my house in 1999, the buyers showed up for closing in a rented Uhaul truck, a big one. Everything they owned was in that truck, as they just closed on selling their old house earlier that same day. Which is what I call living dangerously.

We had to rent a place to live for 4 months last time.
It was just timing. Some houses on our street had been for sale for a while, so we thought ours would take a while, too.
All of a sudden they all sold and our house sold in a few days, too.
New house wasn't going to be ready for 4 months.

My youngest grandson (#4 and soon to be 16 in August) just returned from a week trip to France with several French class school mates and another local school French class and their teachers (can’t imagine how many pizzas and hoagies they sold for that trip). Anyway about a week before he left I thought I’d give him some good ole Grandfather advice about going on his trip. So, I told him to be careful because of the thieves that take advantage of American travelers. I was too late because they had already sat in on a class about their upcoming trip and were warned about the shenanigans of traveling to foreign countries. He said they were told not only to be aware for themselves but to also watch out for each other. Fortunately, they had no problems.

We rented after selling our first place while waiting for a new build to be finished. Same story. Condo sold immediately, at full ask, but buyer needed it quick. Pre kids, so easy back then to do!

I also have a story about living dangerously. When we were selling our 2nd place I stopped at the RE agents office. Very sad looking family sitting in lobby. Turns out, they did the load, close, close, unload move. Or tried to. Load and sale, that happened. At close on new house, seller balked and wouldn’t do it. So while everyone fought over that, they basically were living in a U haul. I always wondered how that story turned out!

I quit wearing a watch in the '80s, because I was constantly looking at it ("you have somewhere else to be").
Then, I started a job in 1986, where knowing the time to the minute was very important, so I started wearing a watch, again.

Two years later, we got handheld devices that had the time, and I've never worn a watch since then.

I was just reading an article about Rolexes recently. Apparently, the least expensive Rolex retails for around $14k. However, this same model sells for about $40k on the secondary market.

One of the many things in this world I don’t understand. A Rolex doesn’t do a damned thing more than a lowly $99 watch. Yeah, someone will say a $99 doesn’t do anything a $10 can’t, but I’m ballparking $99 to at least look good and be quality materials.

Not to mention for $10 Rite Aid won't honor the warranty or price tag for a return.
Usually, the more expensive watches feel better on the wrist. I have a $30 watch with velcro band that I use for tennis....my good watch is metal and I have cut myself on it. But the $1200 watch is lighter, it is much nicer looking, and it fits better.

You haven't forgiven Right Aid....that watch incident happened about 15 years ago.
You bought a $1200 watch!? How if you don't mind me asking?
Simple, you give someone $1,200.00 and they give you a watch.

Actually, you have to give someone about $1370 with sales tax, and then they give you a watch.

Lots of scams when traveling. Time shares are big in Mexico.
When we went to see the pyramids in Egypt they warned us not to go on a camel ride. They tell you ride on a camel is $25, then they take you half a mile, then they tell you it is $50 if you want to be taken back, and $25 if you want help getting off, which would be impossible to do without help.

Looks like my son will be moving in with me in several weeks. He is going to drive here (2400 miles). He needs lots of help which I will try to provide - emotional and financial. Will be tough for me, but he is my son and that is a lifelong commitment!

Driving across country by himself, 2400 miles, sounds like a heck of an undertaking for someone who needs "lots of help". Best of luck to both of you. Back in the fall of 2020, when I got out of the hospital, it was either an assisted living facility or staying with someone who could help. Luckily I had someone step up and help, but even after a few weeks when I was able to move back home, I was in no shape for a cross country drive.

It isn't the driving that I was thinking about. It's the getting in and out of the car, making it to the rest room at the rest stops, checking into a motel, carrying your luggage into the room, bathing, dressing, etc, etc, etc.

If you've never been seriously ill to the point that you could not do all of those things by yourself, then you have no way to understand just how helpless you can be.

I get it. Being out of health is a bad thing, for sure. Young people sometimes experience it, if maybe only more routinely from an injury such as a broken arm. It's not fun.

Being sick is a big deal. When I had sepsis & pneumonia back in 2018, thought it was the flu. Turns out it was gall stones which caused the other problems. After passing out on the kitchen floor, the wife called the paramedics and that was that. Emergency doc found the issues pretty quick & told the family that another day of this would've killed me. Got the stones out & wasn't getting any better, so a week later, took the gall bladder out. Was in the hospital for 14 days and was pretty weak, apparently I fell in the hospital which caused more issues. Was super weak when I got home and took another few weeks to get back to some normalcy.
Can't imagine traveling that way as they took my cane away & had to use a walker to get anywhere. Kids got a waterproof chair so I could sit in the shower and bathe myself as using the bathtub wasn't happening. Felt the best being in bed and took about 8 weeks till I got back to going to work.
I'm sure you'll be able to find some home health care for your son, I used them & some folks were really helpful. In our area, there are lots of places that offer such help. I wish you both the best & with G-d's help, think all will work out for the best!

Somerville, Mass startup brings the EV charger to you.

"If you’re holding out for an electric car that never runs out of battery power, Joshua Aviv thinks he’s got the next-best thing. Aviv’s Somerville startup SparkCharge offers a way for electric car owners to order up some extra kilowatts — anytime, anywhere.

Just fire up Currently, the company’s smartphone app, and SparkCharge will bring the vehicle charger to you, in the back of an electric van. The company’s system, called Roadie, uses stacks of modular lithium-ion batteries linked to a charging unit that can add 1 mile of driving range for every minute it’s connected to the car. So a typical 30-minute SparkCharge session delivers 30 miles of extra driving range. That’s nowhere near as fast as the blazing Supercharger system operated by electric carmaker Tesla. But it’s enough to ensure that an EV with a waning battery can make it home."

How much does the service cost? A gallon a gas which can get many vehicles 30 miles, cost $5.

I’ve looked at Shinolas before and like them, but they’re all quartz watches. I have a Rado, but it’s quartz, too. Durable as all get out as it’s all ceramic, though.

any guesses on what to ask from a store that buys old stuff? to ask on FB marketplace?

I’d look on audiogon.com and see if there is anything similar for pricing help.

2nd Audiogon.com. They tend to get into higher end gear. Vintage audio gear is pretty hot right now. I deal with a local guy who has a vintage audio shop in a local antique mall. See if you can find someone with a storefront or kiosk at those antique places that specializes in vintage audio gear.

eBay isn’t a bad place to get pricing. On your piece, they’re all over the map. I saw one listing for $500 and another for $50. A reseller has to make some money, so they’ll be on the low side. If what you can get is under $100, I’d just take it to a pawn shop and see what they’d give you for it.

    I haven't worn a watch since I retired 8 years ago. Don't miss it.

I'd feel naked without a watch.
I feel the same. Am contemplating my next purchase; Tudor, Zenith, maybe a Rado... Or, another Shinola or a Vaer, USA assembly!
If I’m going to wear a watch that isn’t my Apple Watch, I stick with the automatics. Just so much goes into making them and their movements. I’ve looked at Shinolas before and like them, but they’re all quartz watches. I have a Rado, but it’s quartz, too. Durable as all get out as it’s all ceramic, though.

I do like Tudors and Zeniths.
I agree, I appreciate the "art of watchmaking," the heritage of some of the quality Swiss/European timepieces. For example, the New England connection to the International Watch Company, aka IWC.

If my automatics have run out of charge, and I'm feeling especially lazy, nice to have a quartz ticking away to throw on the wrist. I do have one watch winder, but as I don't get out much, not keeping all the automatics wound as I used to.

Shinola, Rado, Vaer, Seiko, Invicta... most makers offer automatics (whether Swiss or Japanese movement; or other).

Nice parking job by that Mach E.
How much does the service cost? A gallon a gas which can get many vehicles 30 miles, cost $5.
Seems like 3 steps backwards being called progress.
I found this video to be more interesting.

And that’s why it’s going to be a cold day in Hawaii when you see an all electric car in my garage.

When you can trip over charging stations like gas stations, given the choice, I MIGHT get an all electric car.

I just sold the Sony to the local record shop (we still have one that stayed in business, and I think it is thriving now with EP sales, plus CD/DVD/artwork and collectibles, and apparently used gear!). Got $30 for it. I just took it to be done with it. one less bulky, heavy item to try and pack.

but I did buy some records while I was there (to give to our son for his Birthday). 1 bag of 10 for $5. Mystery bag, all wrapped up in brown paper so zero clue what he is getting. Hopefully at least 1 he likes. they had mystery bags of CDs and DVDs too. Fun way to get rid of the excess inventory nobody wants!

    @carnaught,
That picture was taken from the loft area. It looks over the kitchen and family room.

I like that kitchen. I will make sure to not show it to my wife.

My kind of kitchen. I can only assume the receptacle above the cabinets is for a range hood? Going with one of those units with a tall stack?

    @tjc78,
There is a range hood. My wife picked out the whole kitchen except the granite.
I'm kind of nervous to see how the granite really looks.
She got a pot filler too. Not sure where it's going to be set up.

Wife drove to Ohio yesterday. Stopped to fuel up in DuBois, PA.
That's the furthest her MKC has ever gone on a single tank of fuel.
Later, she visited the new house. Good progress being made.

Looks very nice. Is that real hardwood or a laminate floor. We put a laminate floor in flip #1 because the house was built on a concrete slab (very rare in this area but there were quite a few like that on that street). The laminate got a lot of praise from all of the neighbors that looked at it just before we listed it.

We installed real hardwood in flip #3 and everyone like that too. In fact, most folks asked, “is that laminate?” If you chose the right laminate it’s hard to tell real from laminate until you get on your hands and knees to inspect it.

I think we’re going to go with laminate in flip #4 because it’s a smallish starter type 3 bedroom home and while the real stuff is nice we shouldn’t be putting too much lipstick on a pig. As it is we’ve added two bathrooms.

    @jmonroe1,
I'm pretty sure went with an engineered hickory hardwood. We wanted hickory.
Not my first choice, but we could get it.
Here's a picture of the laminate floor I put down 20+ years ago.
I took this picture because you can see my big mistake when putting it down.

I just got a chance to see this. In fact I’m still at the flip just finished up with a couple HVAC duct runs in the basement ceiling. Now we’re ready to dry wall the ceiling. We have a guy that does our dry wall. I’m not messing with those heavy 4 x 8 sheets of drywall, especially on the ceiling. Even with a lift for the ceiling sheets I still ain’t doing it.

Anyway, I guess you’re talking about the repeating of the knots in the pattern of several boards near the cold air return. That’s the downside of light colored laminate. With the dark laminate you try to avoid repeating the pattern but it’s much less noticeable when you can’t avoid doing that. Another throw rug and it looks like a perfect job. There’s usually a way to hide mistakes some are better than others.

    @jmonroe1,
Yes you picked out the mistake. Hard to exactly remember but maybe I didn't work from enough boxes to randomize the pattern.

You did well. Saved packing it up and shipping it and then listening to someone [non-permissible content removed] to you that it’s not perfect and not what they expected, and wants a refund and for you to pick up return shipping. LOL!

I’m knee deep in the vinyl hobby right now. Fun….but, you can empty your wallet quickly if you go too far down that rabbit hole.

    Playing now…..
