It’s a day of mourning in the old farmer household. I just found out that my go-to independent mechanic closed up shop after 34 years. That shop had been my mainstay since I was 16 and took my father’s cars there with the previous owner. Evidently he closed up a few days after my last dealing with him.
I have two other shops I occasionally use so I suppose I’ll make one of them my new mainstay. Letting go is tough. I’m afraid to say that the days of the small independent is over.
The shade tree mechanic that I sometimes used had a stroke last year, and is now down with cancer. But there is another guy in the neighborhood who is now working as a "Mobile Mechanic", and he seems pretty competent.
Anything in Puget Sound metro that sits on the market is either grossly overpriced or has some kind of unforgivable flaw. One of the most competitive markets in the nation, and has been for some time. When we sold my late grandmother's house last spring, we had 20+ offers in the first 36 hours, and it ended up selling for ~20% over list.
Speaking of home improvement shows, does anyone watch "Unsellable Houses"? Sisters in the Seattle area fix up homes that have been on the market too long - the premise is that they invest their own money for the upgrades, then get it back, plus half of whatever the house sells for above the original asking price.
What I like about the hosts is that they are both diehard VW fanatics - their primary vehicle is an early 70's VW Bus, and there have been segments where they are shopping for more vintage VW's, or work with friends who own them.
There are actually houses that have been on the market too long?
Well, things have sure softened in the past two weeks as far as house prices. We keep talking about downsizing and probably will be listing our house soon. It's probably down 200,000 from it's high BUT so are the prices of smaller places we are looking at. Either way, it's nuts!
No, I didn't die. I just spent two hours trying to catch up here. Sorry to hear about Richard. He was always one of the good guys here. I'll try to do better. Happy Father's Day guys! Craig
Say, didn’t you buy an old style Ford Ranger some time back? How did that turn out?
I’ve been looking for one for some time but the nice low mileage ones are selling for close to original sticker.

I was just reading an article about Rolexes recently. Apparently, the least expensive Rolex retails for around $14k. However, this same model sells for about $40k on the secondary market.
One of the many things in this world I don’t understand. A Rolex doesn’t do a damned thing more than a lowly $99 watch. Yeah, someone will say a $99 doesn’t do anything a $10 can’t, but I’m ballparking $99 to at least look good and be quality materials.
And folks that buy a $25k Civic or Corolla think the same thing about a $100k Escalade or Range Rover.
You don't buy a $25000 Rolex just because it tells you the time. You buy the $99 to tell time, and why buy a $99 watch when you can get a Timex for $25 that will do the same thing. It's an emotional thing.
In 2004 MrsD100 was going to buy me a watch for my birthday...I was looking for a Seiko, maybe $150 to $200. We saw a designer watch and I reluctantly tried it....it felt great. It is light, thin, looks like one piece, feels good...."the feel of the wrist" - like the feel of the road. So, it cost $1200...that's almost 20 years ago, so it works out to $50 a year, it probably comes out to less than a $99 would cost, and it looks good, works perfectly with no problems, and feels great. What's that saying, no one is sorry they bought quality.
No worries here, my online savings accounts are currently paying .9% and 1.01% interest! Soon, again, I will own a mansion and a yacht.

Or $40 in Times Square.
I paid $15, admittedly many a year ago. I was assured it was genuine and that it look good on you. I make no apologies for my admiration of fine Swiss watches (or Misses); our boats are all rowed by different oars. There are those who would question the sanity of buying any car other than a CamCCord. Or a used Yugo. Your wheels may fall off at varying mileage.
But, Rolex is not on my list, not that it's a bad watch. I prefer less known outside of the watch world, so to speak. Most all my watches were purchased to memorialize an occasion (e.g. anniversary or birthday). I love my Omega Seamaster Plant Ocean for everyday casual wear. My IWC DaVinci for fancier times (so I never wear it!). My Tag Heuer S/EL for it was the first "fine" watch that I purchased. And, my Shinola bought in Aruba, for the story behind it. The Baume et Mercier is back at the shop, needs warranty work; this I bought in memory of my father. And, of course, my '78 Seiko automatic chronograph that my parents gave me as a HS graduation gift. Still works, if not in exactly pristine condition after 16 years of daily wearing. Even my Invicta ProDiver (Japanese) Automatic, for I fear no damage or loss while wearing it! But, it, too works reliably.

Looks like someone got out of the car business to sell windows…
I get those about every two months. I think I've gotten them from two different stores or suppliers.
Since I've had Renewal windows for a couple of decades that replaced the original Andersen windows in this house that were poorly made for a couple or 3 decades, I don't pay attention to the ads.
Here’s the thing: I actually like watches. I have a small collection. But the most expensive was probably $150. You can’t make the same comparison to cars. You pay more for performance or quieter cabin or tech. You actually get an increase in something for the increase in money. A watch can’t tell the time faster. It can have more features, but an Apple watch has more features than any Rolex yet costs a fraction of one. If you are into having real gold or platinum or diamonds or whatever, then that at least makes some sense. But surely $25k isn’t getting you $25k of gold and gems, right? And it would seem to me many rolexes don’t even have things like that anymore, do they? Not that I pay attention, but aren’t they far more understated these days?

His cable bill is over $189/month? I have everything I want with streaming services at a tiny fraction of that.
Ours is $330 all in with the security, plus whatever Disney+ costs us. Down the shore we do internet only for $40 but it’s slow at only 200 Mbps (have Gig speed at home). Good thing is since we have so much service at home we can use our home login to stream just about everything we could want. So it is like $185 a house.

That’s a bigger market than you might think. I know of one guy who used to be a pawn broker, who now limits himself to buy, sell, trade high end brand watches from Sweden. Rolex is strict on who their retailers are, thus limiting supply. He even closed down his storefront and works by appointment only out of his house.
Secondary market, much like the used car market, allows for someone to buy at retail and sell at a premium for those watches to those who just “have to have” a Rolex.
The belt (not chain) on the garage door opener (Chamberlain Quiet Drive) just failed on my side of the garage. I’m very thankful it didn’t fall on my daughter this morning as she exits that door to get to her car. She works the opening shift today. I can’t complain too much as they will be 18 years old this month and have been trouble free. I will take the hint and replace the other one as well. Grrr, always something.

Funny you mention the Apple Watch. I’ve got quite a few Automatic Swiss watches. Some I inherited, some I traded for used, all are nice from the likes of Tag Heuer, Omega, etc. Since I got my Apple Watch about a year ago, I don’t wear any of them. Plus, I can change the face of the Apple Watch on a whim.
Watches are jewelry. Functionally, a Casio is a better deal.

Same here. I have a modest selection of watches that haven’t been worn for a few years since getting an Apple Watch. I wear a “nice” watch to weddings or whenever I have to get dressed up which these days is very rare.
The Blazer EV is on the way, due to arrive next spring.
Speaking of new EVs, Chevy gave the world its first glimpse at the Blazer EV SS a few days ago. Due to go on sale in the spring of next year, the midsize electric SUV will use GM's Ultium platform. The Super Sport badging, of course, suggests that there will be a standard Blazer EV on the menu as well, with Chevy planning a number of versions, in addition to vehicles like the Equinox EV.https://www.autoweek.com/news/
The Blazer EV is over-stylized IMHO. The large gill ahead of the front of the front door and especially the windows from the C-pillars and back, I do not like.

They seem to want to make EVs look different than gassers, more like some kind of computer. The lines never flow like in a well designed car.
I had two Apple watches, one given to me by a friend who replaced his. The other, I won in a contest at work. The second one must have been dropped, it stopped working, the back was all spider webbed. So, I wear the oldie, but usually only when I run to clock time/distance and listen to music.
I've worn a watch all my life, seem to have been born with the watch gene. I'll continue to do so. Why do people waste money on original artwork when a copy is so much cheaper? You look at them the same (with your eyes, if not your heart). YMMV

A question for the mods. Is it possible to change the email account associated with my userid here? I am using an old email at the "sbcglobal.net" domain, which still works. But as AT&T no longer owns Yahoo, the advice is to quit using any emails associated with AT&T domains. It seems while they still work, they are getting a bit flaky and may cease to work at any time.
Most of my email goes to gmail, and has for many years. But I still have a few things linked to sbcglobal. Up until recently, it was still working fairly well. But now every time I go to look at that email, it makes me sign in again, refuses my password, and forces me to go through password reset. And it always accepts re-using the same password, which is very bad behavior.
I love my Timex watches even though I tried Casio for awhile back in the day. Do have an Apple SE watch I bought about 18 months ago but still figuring how it works. Think if I used it more, I'd like it better but since I doubt it's waterproof, that's an issue. My current Timex Ironman watches are all waterproof since I usually ear them 24/7. My wife likes my Timex Ironman watch so much I always have an extra one on hand for her to use once hers breaks. She prefers a slightly larger watch face which the women watches seem to lack. Tried a Fitbit but wore it in the shower & it was toast. So, the Apple watch is fully charged now so will try it tomorrow & see how it goes. Must read up & see if it is waterproof.

But ... If you had bothered to go there and look, you cannot change your email address. You can change your name, your address, your phone number, your password -- but not your email.
I had the same question about Email address. I still have some old stuff tied to my comcast Email. and when I move, I won't have them as a cable provider any longer. I think I can keep the address if I want to (for some annual fee of course) but need to call them to confirm. I need to figure out what still uses that and try to get everything off of it that matters (the 90%+ that is spam can just go into the ether) so I can retire it.
Geez… I was able to change my email address. My username here was also the name of my first email address in the 1990s that I got when I joined a local freenet operation in the Neanderthal era of the internet. Once I had a more full-featured internet provider that old email went away. I can’t recall how I did it but if someone sends me a DM here now it goes to my current email address.
I wish I could change my username here but that seems impossible.

Went for a walk with oldest daughter. Made pizzas on the grill. Washed, polished and sealed three vehicles. Grilled steaks and sweet potatoes. I’m wiped out.
almost got taken out on the NJ Turnpike today. was cruising in the middle (of 3) lanes on the truck side (I just like that side) at about 73ish. not too much traffic right by me, a fair amount shortly ahead (including some trucks). heard a swarm of hornets coming, and by the time I looked in the mirror a couple of sport bikes blew past. As in so fast you barely saw them. No clue how fast they were going but easily triple digits. and of course they were cutting in and out and splitting lanes. a couple barely cleared my front end, then the truck in front of me.
then some more came by, and a bunch in the other set of lanes. Probably 15-20 total? just blew ahead. though for some reason, shortly after they all slowed down to normal speed. either saw a cop or maybe traffic got too congested?
Unnerving though. if someone pulled out to pass at the wrong second would have been some serious splatter.

OK, today was a dream, the sky was sunny, and the air was clean. Had the top down on the BMW, we were stopped at a light and Hank Williams Sr was on the radio singing "I'm so lonesome I could cry". Looks like someone got out of the car business to sell windows…
I’ve been looking for one for some time but the nice low mileage ones are selling for close to original sticker.

Since I've had Renewal windows for a couple of decades that replaced the original Andersen windows in this house that were poorly made for a couple or 3 decades, I don't pay attention to the ads.
They are good window systems for replacements.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Here’s the thing: I actually like watches.

I should mention that I am the same way with clothes. I am super cheap with clothing. When pants cost more than $25, I have palpitations.

Secondary market, much like the used car market, allows for someone to buy at retail and sell at a premium for those watches to those who just “have to have” a Rolex.

The Super Sport badging, of course, suggests that there will be a standard Blazer EV on the menu as well, with Chevy
planning a number of versions, in addition to vehicles like the Equinox EV.https://www.autoweek.com/news/

YMMV

Did do some painting in the garage.
Tried a Fitbit but wore it in the shower & it was toast. So, the Apple watch is fully charged now so will try it tomorrow & see how it goes. Must read up & see if it is waterproof.

Successful Father’s Day here.
Went for a walk with oldest daughter. Made pizzas on the grill. Washed, polished and sealed three vehicles. Grilled steaks and sweet potatoes. I’m wiped out.
then some more came by, and a bunch in the other set of lanes. Probably 15-20 total? just blew ahead. though for some reason, shortly after they all slowed down to normal speed. either saw a cop or maybe traffic got too congested?
Unnerving though. if someone pulled out to pass at the wrong second would have been some serious splatter.
