I had my problem, going to London, Stop over in Halifax, then 2 hour delay, plane waits one hour on runway, they take a drunk guy off, half an hour more and they can't get permission to land at Heathrow after hours, can't land after 11:30 curfew, all hotels are booked in London, so we take a 2 hour flight back to Toronto and go home.

My best friend had what might be a worse experience. He went to Portugal for 3 weeks with his brother. His brothers flight home was delayed for one day....he had to stay in the hotel an extra night and since the pope was in town it cost $450 for the night.

His plane was one hour late taking off the next morning. he landed in Toronto but missed his flight home to Windsor which is 240 miles from Toronto. He could sleep overnight at his grand daughters. It was a nice room in their house, but he had to pee in the middle of the night. For some reason there wasn't a door knob inside the room. He couldn't get out...he opened the window to see if he could go that way but couldn't. He found a cup so went in that. In the morning he washed the cup out with soap etc and he put it in his suitcase. Very resourceful!

OK you can’t just end that story there. Why was there no door knob and why would the grand daughter put him in a room like that? How did he get out in the morning?

    Too many questions.
I am not sure why there wasn't a door knob....but I think it had to do with that it came off and they didn't fix it. He got out in the morning, because when he heard people walking by and making a noise once they were up, he yelled to let him out!
Too inquisitive, just go with it, you couldn't make this story up!

Once I went for an interview...one hour drive away. The owner's son was interviewing me, daddy's kid, and he came into the room 50 minutes late. He spent 30 minutes telling me what a genius his father and him were for making this company so successful. Then I wrote an I.Q. test, another 30 minutes of my life gone.....and what does I.Q. have to do with a sales job, although I am sure I had a very high score :D .
Well, I didn't get the job and they weren't courteous enough to even send a "not accepted" email.
ILMAO when I noticed they were out of business 3 years later! I probably could have saved them :D .

HR is a joke at most companies. I'm still amazed I got my best gig/job yet through a referral that made it seem so easy (and flashing FAST!). Normally, it's not easy for me to find a new job, so I'm echoing what others have been saying. It probably doesn't hurt that the company incentivizes referrals generously.

They've probably found the capitalistic greedy system of hiring employee referrals works better than any HR department effort.

Networking is huge in business. Resumes are passive. Most are ignored unless you can find a way to make on stand out. If you are applying for a job selling cars send them a model car you made....or you will be MIA in a pile of paper resumes.
Or, talk to people in the field and find out where there is an opening.

the job I got recently was a case where they reached out to me. I never even applied before I had been interviewed and they were offering me the position (caused all kinds of confusion from the HR people having to backdate the application, etc.!) Former senior manager reached out to my former boss looking for someone, he mentioned me and the big boss got all excited and hit me up on Linkedin, and that is all she wrote.

I did get one other offer at the same time, a state position (but only a contract one to get around civil service rules).

I probably had about 10-12 interviews out of a slew of applications. Some just a screening 1st, but a fair number of 2nd interviews with hiring teams. Just none I got to work, but at least the resume got through the firewall to get me in the door!

I hope we don’t have any HR professionals here … but quite frankly the entire hiring process is flawed and really needs a revamp.

Endless follow ups by the candidate, nearly impossible ATS systems that don’t get qualified candidates even a look by the hiring team, excessive interviews and in some cases personality tests, etc. all insane.

I’ll share this - I know someone who was cold called from an outside recruiter for a VP position for a growing company. Three virtual interviews including the CEO and investors. Two in person interviews, three calls to references only to lose the job to a family member. Are you kidding me? Clearly they were used to satisfy requirements. The in person interviews were fairly long drives for the candidate. The only explanation from the recruiter was “you were the more qualified candidate, but they felt more comfortable with family”.

Probably dodged a bullet but still.

I got a call from a recruiter just today. They said that they found my resume online (if she did it's at least 17 years old) and had a position that I might be interested in. She asked me what my current career goals were and my one word reply was "retirement". That pretty much ended the call right there and then.

I'm at that "in between" point - too young to retire, and trying to find one more job for those few years until I get there. Trying to use my experience as an asset.

Same place I was at really. Just old enough to FIRE (at least the RE part) as long as the wife stayed at the grindstone to 65. And mentally prepared. So going back to hecticness full time has been a bit of a shock!

There used to be a company here that had ads that made them sound like they could place you in high paying executive jobs if you signed up. They were just looking for people they could scam into paying a lot to take a course in how to do interviews, writing up a resume, and doing minimal to actually find you a job.
    Might be something like that!

For a while after I returned, I had some people contacting me about positions…was tempted by a couple of them. As such, I had some interface with them to see what they were thinking.

Got to the point with 2 of them HQ’d in Silicon Valley (although the positions would have been remote) that they flew me out to do the “grip and grin” with the higher ups and give me a tour of who I would be working with, and who would be working for me, in addition to talking to the person who was trying to recruit me.

One company who was much smaller than where I came from (that’s a good thing) had a female HR person who I guess was trying to make a point asked how I felt about working with females. Found that question quite odd and replied with…….that’s an odd question. I’ve with and for females all the time. Matter of fact, our CEO is a female. Why do you ask?” Apparently, she only heard “that’s an odd question”. So, at the requisite lunch we had with all the people I interviewed with (about 6, IIRC), she was vocal about me somehow being “testy” working with females.

I said nothing except I considered her accusation to be insulting and certainly untrue. Didn’t even finish the lunch. Got up, thanked everyone for their time, but I was not interested in the position. Got to the hotel to pick up my luggage and change my flight home (both of which was arranged by the interviewing company), only to find out the hotel charges had been changed from paid for by the company to paid for by me. I could write it off, but that really chafed me. Found out months later she was fired. Little consolation, but still…..

2nd one…..the person I would have been reporting to, upon getting me out to their San Jose HQ wanted to know what my old company was doing in the “Block Chain” space. That was considered confidential. I was bound by an NDA when I retired. But, even without the NDA, I would not have divulged that information. He kept quizzing me in different ways to divulge confidential information until I finally stated that any information outside of my responsibilities, my career path, and recommendations from my former direct reports and who I reported to, were off limits.

That was another abrupt ending to an interview which was supposed to be a formality to getting an offer. I didn’t get an offer, BTW.

The second scenario was a no-win situation. Had you compromised your integrity, (which you didn't) and gave them a nibble of information they were so intent on getting, they would then question your integrity that you may give away their confidential information!

Years ago, I was in a meeting led by a regional director for Unisys, with most but not all of those attending being Unisys staff, with the others being outside members of the project team like myself. After giving some updates on the areas he had responsibility for, he apologized for one item where some corporate staffing issues had caused slippage in the schedule. He said that he even had to go up the chain to Corporate HQ looking to bust the logjam. He said “l knew I was in trouble when she called back to introduce herself and told me ‘I’m from HR and I’m here to help’”. I guess the reputation of their HR department must have been common knowledge internally, because that line caused all the Unisys folks to break up with uproarious laughter. I wasn’t at all surprised since I hold the same opinion of that profession after many disappointments over the years.

I had something similar happen to me right out of the University for a company I interviewed with and didn't get the job. The hotel tried to charge me I suppose when the company balked at paying (which was the arrangement).

I told the hotel to pound sand but the manager was a stupid idiot and didn't budge. I fought it as a charge back and won with my credit card company when I was able to show the hotel had another "payer" and I was able to show that in writing (that being the company that was supposed to pay). Whether they paid or not wasn't my problem.

A good and interesting article and kind of confirms what I have been thinking. I skimmed but from what I picked up, a shortage of chips, sudden demand for cars, prices go up, rare chips are used to make the most expensive models, car companies like the new profit margins, prices seldom drop back again, and we get used to the new higher prices.

That sounds like a variation on the Nigerian Prince scam. Once you told them your career goals they would try to sell you something to help you achieve them.

    Have a good vacation.

I’ll be leaving Myrtle Beach for a flight back home tomorrow at 5PM. We had good weather here for the week. Temps in the high 80’s to low 90’s. It started to rain about 40 minutes ago. Not too worry, I was already out of the water and in the condo before the rain started.

Thinking of doing it for at least 2 weeks next year and maybe longer if @qbrozen wants me to watch his place for a while.

Small world…..I had a job offer from Unisys early in my career as a technical marketing person. Thought pretty seriously about it. But, I never could put my finger on it, but something didn’t feel right about the job. So, I didn’t take it. They made another run at me a couple of years later, but I didn’t even want to interview. Thanked them and moved on.

I had two bouts of experience with them. The first was back in the ‘80s as a low-level grunt on the customer side. My boss was the recipient of much largesse on their expense account, mostly expensive, long lunches at expensive restaurants. Those around my level had no such luck but I will say that they didn’t spare the resources to help us do our jobs. Later in my career in the late ‘90s was the other experience I mentioned and I was the client lead, and we got that same lunch/dinner/drinks/travel treatment. It was something, quite different from the experience a bit earlier dealing with IBM, who were much more stiff.

It seemed to me that Unisys believed that their marketing people were supposed to mostly be genial hosts.

We're staying domestic, but I think once we're retired, world travel will be our oyster (hers, I have little wanderlust. But whatever Lola wants, Lola gets).
September, we're off to SF, Sedona, AZ and Block Island, RI. Then I'll probably spend a few free nights at my fave local casino. Well, free if I don't play!

Today my son is going on vacation with his girlfriend and her family.
    To Reykjavík Iceland...

Watch out, that volcano they’ve been talking about collapsed sending lava all over. Still better than Maui unfortunately.

Thanks, I've not been. She has, and waxes poetic about it. So, any recommendations appreciated!
The Sedona trip may be the beginning of the where will we retire to tour, if we decide lovely MA is too expensive. Or was the Vegas trip the beginning?!

But, as of now, on vacation; Delaware shore tomorrow!

How do we know you aren’t in my place right now? Who did you rent through? What street are you on?

We’re staying at the Sea Watch Resort. It’s a condo place operated by Wyndham it’s right on the ocean. There are two high rise buildings, North and South towers, with a couple villas between them. I’m pretty sure there are at least 5 pools and at least 4 times that many hot tubs. It also has a lazy river etc. etc.

We like it, that’s why we’ve been coming here for years. It’s mainly a timeshare place but there are quite a few units in the towers that are individually owned which are rented out by the owners, through realty places. That’s what we do. The unit we’re in now was rented through North Beach Realty.

And, where the population doesn't have true last names - just patronyms like "Magnusson" or "Augustdottir".

There are a lot of surnames that are actually patronyms that have just been passed down. Johnson means son of John, Williams means son of William and so on. Most names that end in "son" "sen" "sin" "zon" "zen" "zin" and "s" mean "son of". There are likely others that hold the same meaning.

I continue to be surprised at how many different settings you can adjust on the C43; many of them are particularly useful. I even found a setting for Geezer Mode- but Mercedes calls it "Route-Based Speed Adaptation." When cruise control is activated, it slows the car down for curves by an excessive amount. It was enabled when I bought the car, and it was the first "feature" that I deactivated.

Oh yes; I discovered it a few days after I bought it and I immediately started searching for how to disable it.
