I’m surprised you guys in the US have to pay taxes on lottery winnings. Up here govt-sponsored lottery winnings are tax-free. Makes up for the worthlessness of our Canadian dollars I suppose.

Saw today where Hertz is selling off 20,000 EVs, a third of their fleet, and replacing with gas cars. They cited highter than anticipated repair costs and depreciation. Plus few people wanted to rent them.

Note Mike Austin, who's part of a Detroit ProEV lobby group, wants to imply the higher cost of repairs is a Tesla problem rather than an EV problem. Hmmmm. Bias against Tesla?

Silly, ain’t it? They take money on the sales AND on the winnings. So the gov basically takes 75% of what goes into the lottery. And yet so many of our states, and our country as a whole, is in the red. Go figure.

most states don't tax the lottery (like Mega, or the state sponsored ones). That is where the non-winnings money goes. The fed has no stake in the lottery pie so just look at it like any other winnings.

I suppose with no mortgage or car note, I would have some extra play money. Maybe expand the garage and pick up another old croc - but maybe like you, I am a "low roller" in my old car tastes, and would be unlikely to want anything more than 20-25K. Also maybe take a cool vacation more frequently.

Yeah my classic car taste is definitely more Walmart than Nordstrom!

Yeah, I saw that too. My buddy at Hertz said that people no longer request EVs. On the contrary they now request to NOT get an EV. The ones they rented had to be de-tuned because people were driving like maniacs and crashing them.

https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/hertz-sell-about-20000-evs-us-fleet-2024-01-11/#:~:text=Hertz will instead opt for,to electric by 2024 end.

Two of our drivers got called in extra early to deliver an electric Volvo to the Mannheim auction near Harrisburg PA. This was what we call a “buyback” which is a car purchased from a manufacturer with the stipulation that we sell it back to them at a certain milage. Kind of like returning a lease.

Because the auction required that the car be delivered with 90% charge they had to stop twice on the way for about an hour each time to charge it. I don’t know what sort of proprietary stations they used but we’re told it cost more than the gas for the chase vehicle. That seems strange.

This was suppose to be a 12 hour round trip but after our crew finished our own 12 hour shift they hadn’t returned.

My understanding is that in Canada we don't tax lottery winners on the winnings because if we did that we'd also have to write off the losses people spend buying lottery tickets.

So people don't want them as rentals, sales are off for new EVs, how are they going to reach their targets of getting us all to own one by 2030 or whatever year it is?

As a rental without also owning one yourself I could see it being a bit of a pain when you’re not familiar with charging and/or don’t have the apps or your phone etc.

As with anything in order to get more people on board prices have to come down and eventually dwindle the inventory on gas cars to not leave much choice.

Just like with light bulbs. CFL and LED used to be stupid expensive and people just bought incandescent. Eventually the incandescent became nearly impossible to find and the others came down to a reasonable price and now that’s all anyone buys. Don’t quote me on this.. but I think CFL is on its way out too.

As I mentioned in a previous post, the battery in my G90 charges to only 65%, according to my Genesis APP that reads vehicle status each time I refresh the APP, no matter how far I drive or how extended the timeframe of the average trip. The car will be 3 years old at the end of March so my thoughts are that the battery is approaching its usable lifespan considering the high temps it has to perform in from May through October (90+ degrees). So long as it maintains 65% charge, I will wait to replace the battery for as long as I can - my guess is 6 months max.

I remember when I lived in Palm Desert, CA, I had to replace my battery every 24 months or so due to extended high temps 8-9 months a year.

Any thoughts about my battery assumptions from you guys?

These days the computer controls battery charging too. I think the logic is supposed to manage recharge to extend battery life. But it. Night not be your battery can’t charge, the car just won’t let it.

Good news is we have been in our house about a year and a half and have only to paid property taxes on our lot(3 6 month installments).
Bad news is that we are about to get our first real tax bill and the square footage of our house is overstated by over 800 Sq Ft.
I called the County Auditor and they are going to send someone out to get the correct measurements but we still will have to pay the incorrect tax bill. The overpayment will be adjusted on the next bill.
We've been putting money aside for taxes right along, so we have the money for the amount due, but still kind of aggravating.

@mike, heat has killed just as many battlers, maybe's even more, than cold weather. However, I wouldn’t necessarily believe what you app is telling you until you can verify it. To do that I’d take the car to at least 2 different brand auto parts stores and ask them to test it. The ones in my hood don’t even charge to do this. So what do you have to lose? When you’re at the first store, note what tester they are using, maybe even ask the guy what brand and model they’re using. The reason I say this is so when you go the 2nd store you can find out what they’re using and if it’s the same as the first store, go to another store. Hopefully you’ll find one that isn’t the same. Once you have done that, if they are both saying the same thing you would have had at least a second opinion.

just my 2 dollars worth. Anyone who only charges 2 cents for their opinion doesn’t really value their knowledge. I’d never do that to a poster buddy. You get what you pay for.

That’s a bunch of bull, charging you for their error then adjusting your next bill.

When we had our house built in SC in 1992, they over estimated the footage so I called and they said they’d send someone out. I then asked them why they over estimated because before I could move in, the county had to verify the house was built to the prints they had on file. The lame excuse was they didn’t look at those, they just measure the outside of the house and tax based on that. I guess they figure if they can get away with that why not try. I ain’t no dope so I called them on that.

Well the house had a pretty large 2 story foyer (so no floor above the foyer and the bonus room above the garage was technically unfinished (thanks to the suggestion of our builder) who told me not to have him put trim on the doors, not to paint the room just leave the drywall showing the taped and sanded joints, leave the floor unfinished and also leave the construction steps in place as they were. All of that was done specifically to save on taxes. He knew that I could easily do all of that and it was worth it. I remember asking the builder about not finishing some of the bedrooms and his reply to that was “@jmonroe, don’t push it”.

When the guys came out, as soon as they walked in, Mrs. j heard one of them saying something like, “oh yeah, someone really screwed this up. I don’t blame the guy for calling. Someone is going to have to look at the prints, I’m not going to spend the time measuring this house”. When Mrs. j asked if they wanted to see the bonus room, at first he said no then said, “well since I’m here I’ll take a quick look so the boss thinks I’ve done something”. She said he no sooner walked up the steps he said, “yeah, I’ve seen this before and I’d do the same thing if I had a house built and didn’t need this space right away”.

Needless to say the real bill was much reduced.

You are in Ohio? Welcome to Ohio.

Son's house showed incorrect facts after he noticed on the property description
after they'd lived there a year. Auditor office said they get the data from the
realtor's description. I believe it was a 4th bedroom, which is actually
a neat room for the office but could be a bedroom. 4 bedrooms increased
    the value of the home.

Your property tax is a year behind in Ohio. And you are aware that you just
arrived for the 3 year reevaluation where the State Auditor directed all the
counties to increase their valuations to reflect market rate rather than
the previous values. Ours went up 35% in valuation.

I'm waiting to see if the tax goes up or down. I think the bill is due in a
    few weeks.

Actually an EV would be perfect for my wife and me, but just too old to change. Neither one of us drive very much any more, and when we do it is nearly always short trips. If the kids want to see us, they make the drive over from St. Louis, as we quit making that trip a couple of years ago. We each only drive around 4 or 5 thousand miles per year now.

I just suffered my 81st birthday Jan. 3rd and my wife is 77. Our 57th anniversary is coming up in August. Thankfully we are both in pretty good shape for our ages. With my calling about renewing this month they went from bad to worse. They mentioned to me close to 2 years ago that I had a “large account”, meaning that they’ve kept every car I’ve had with them on the account as inactive instead of deleting it like anyone else would do. Thy told me then that this was a problem that they were “working on”. Because of it they could not do many functions online or by phone. One thing was that they simply could not add a new car’s radio i.d., still under the 3 month promotional period, to my account. Before they had found a way around it, now they cannot. So they dumbed-down themselves even more than they were and apparently 2 years wasn’t long enough to find a solution to the problem that they created. Ohhh boyyyy….🤪.

They sent me an email several weeks ago telling me that the subscription on both cars was coming do and wanted to extend the service. All I had to do was give them my CC number and I’m good for another year at something $340 + for each car. They ain’t getting that. They should know by now that I only renew with a mailed invoice just like I’ve been doing for more than 20 years and I only do that when I tell them I’ll cancel unless the give me last years rate.Talk about a bunch of slow learners. :o My problem now is, I understand that last years rate (about $115 all in for each car) may not be the best rate.

So, anybody willing to tell me what their yearly rate is WITHOUT giving them your CC info.

    Correction: 15 years not 20.

You can pay by credit card for one year, then still renew or cancel by phone. I’ve done it for 10 years for my wife. They keep making it easier. The last two times, it’s taken less than 15 minutes. You get a month’s notice.

    About $92, this past year.

Apple Music or Pandora premium is such a better value than XM.

You basically have access to any album ever recorded plus curated stations and playlists.

I’ll never go back to XM. You can also use it in the house or whenever your phone is.

SiriusXM should open up some car dealerships: they certainly have the sales techniques down pat.
I quit them after having fallen for a $6 mo base rate rather than the $5 mo I had previously. Then
the phone calls started. I answered one by mistake in the car. I told her not to call me back--they didn't
want to give me the rate that I kept asking for when I was on the phone earlier and I was done.

Then the emails offering $4 per mo started. I got lots of those. So that would be $48 plus the extra charges so 75$ I estimate?

I play my CD with mp4s when I need music and listen to some FM stations--ain't many that are listenable.

I listened during the week or more they have the free service again and turned back on all the SXM stations.

I noticed that the channels I liked seemed to play the same songs over and over.

It depends on what you want. I like the music with DJ's on Sirius but the sports broadcasts clinches it for me.

I’ve heard parole boards have been getting soft the last few months. So, I guess it’s true.

Being you’re now a hit and run poster, don’t come in here with disparaging comments about EV cars. Several of your old poster buddies have one or at least part of one. They may never post to you again. :'(

Anyway, I haven't forgotten you guys, I just don't post as often as I used to. You are still a great bunch of guys, even you and Driver, Monroe.
    Thanks.......I think!

You can pay by credit card for one year, then still renew or cancel by phone. I’ve done it for 10 years for my wife. They keep making it easier. The last two times, it’s taken less than 15 minutes. You get a month’s notice.

    About $92, this past year.

Thanks but I’m dead set against giving them my CC. I’m willing to pay a little more just to avoid doing that.

Saw today where Hertz is selling off 20,000 EVs, a third of their fleet, and replacing with gas cars. They cited highter than anticipated repair costs and depreciation. Plus few people wanted to rent them.

Hey stranger when did they let you out?

Actually an EV would be perfect for my wife and me, but just too old to change. Neither one of us drive very much any more, and when we do it is nearly always short trips. If the kids want to see us, they make the drive over from St. Louis, as we quit making that trip a couple of years ago. We each only drive around 4 or 5 thousand miles per year now.

I just suffered my 81st birthday Jan. 3rd and my wife is 77. Our 57th anniversary is coming up in August. Thankfully we are both in pretty good shape for our ages. I think I might be a couple of years older than Mike, so that makes me the elder statesman on here. If I am wrong about your age Mike, let me know and I will pass the title on to you.

Anyway, I haven't forgotten you guys, I just don't post as often as I used to. You are still a great bunch of guys, even you and Driver, Monroe.

Man that’s the worst left handed compliment I’ve ever had. You should be more careful about who you group me with. :#

I was thinking the same but I think he chose two opposites to tie in.
You write long wandering posts and I write short snappy informative posts. :p

My SiriusXM subscription has either run out or is about to run out. I get an email every day and mail once a week.

You must give them credit for their tenacity.

RE: Sirius. With my calling about renewing this month they went from bad to worse. . Before they had found a way around it, now they cannot. So they dumbed-down themselves even more than they were and apparently 2 years wasn’t long enough to find a solution to the problem that they created. Ohhh boyyyy….🤪.

Just when you think they are one of the worst companies to work with....they reach a new low.

Apple Music or Pandora premium is such a better value than XM.

You basically have access to any album ever recorded plus curated stations and playlists.

I’ll never go back to XM. You can also use it in the house or whenever your phone is.

you can use XM in the house or off your phone. It comes with the streaming app.

the biggest advantage to me of XM is convenience. It works like, well, the radio! Turn on the car, and it comes on. If I want to change stations, I just thumb the button on the steering wheel. I don't want to have to plug in my phone every time I get in the car, and I certainly don't want to have to play with the phone to change the music. On a road trip, no issue with the wife playing with it (other than the fact she gets confused how and has lousy taste in music, and can't remember any bands!) But for local driving I like the ease of just having a radio working without doing anything.

Yep, that’s the way I look at it too and I’m willing to pay for that convenience to a point. However, if I can’t get the XM price I want I’ll have to throw in a CD. With my 2015 Genny I can only load one CD but my 2009 Genny had a 6 CD changer which I thought was the cats meow. The 2018 Subie can only handle one CD also.

Yeah, I heard that was coming. I guess I could always try adding a CD player in the trunk. Down side of that is once I get in there I might not be able to climb out. My knees ain’t what they used to be. Might have to tie a rope around me and give Mrs. j a call on her cell. Just have to make sure I didn’t upset her before I climb into the trunk.

Just tie the rope around your waist when you crawl in there and, if you can't get out, have Mrs. J tie the other end to a tree and drive away - sort of like pulling a tooth with a string.

Burn your music to a USB drive.

I wouldn't give them my CC info. either. The final straw was when they billed me after it ran out without even asking me, then mailed the bill.

I liked having it, but it's sort of like quitting smoking - the longer you do without it the better you feel. B)

Where you live there should be whatever you want on the radio. If it's because you don't like commercials, then there's no hope.

Our XM is in my wife's car, so me deciding to drop it is a non-starter.

Good point, no sports events on those services.

    @stickguy
I completely forgot they have the app.

As for convenience if you have a car with CarPlay or even better wireless CarPlay it’s pretty seamless. Apple Music starts playing as soon as the car connects.

One last note about CarPlay… they now sell wireless adapters for those with older cars that don’t have that technology. They only cost about $100.

Porsche now has a CarPlay replacement unit that would have hookups for rear-view camera, etc, for the Cayman. Factory fit and finish.

    Only $1495 + installation. :o

Not including a rear-view camera, of course
