RB....I'm too much of a tightwad to pay someone to cut my grass. Your plan has appeal, however. Those first two cuts are a bear.

Sirius.....dumped them long ago. I get my podcasts updated daily on my phone automatically, and play those. At least the podcasts are ones I can pick and choose what does/doesn't interest me. Oh, and they're free.

There is a small chance oldfarmers company could be legit....I'd say 3.5% chance. What if a dealer sold more luxury cars than they could get their hands on? It might be worth it to them having agents all over the country hunting down cars.

The deal may be that OF doesn't lay out his own money. He gives this dealer all the information and they buy and handle the paperwork. Maybe they do ship the cars outside the country.

I think it could be a very good business plan.

Having said that, it doesn't seem to be legit, but, there is a slight possibility it could be.

I hae 30 hours of music on my USB stick too, but sometimes I like random selections. And, I have about 4 or 5 stations I can switch to if I don't like a song...or if it is a bad streak. For $10 a month, 30 cents a day, I don't care...I don't have any other vices.

    Need an opinion.

I plan on retiring next year and I'd like to dabble as a driver in a car related area. I was looking at the help wanted ads and found an odd posting. Does this sound legitimate?
    ----------------------

We are a licensed car wholesale dealer headquartered in New York and do business across the U.S. We buy and resell lots of luxury cars. Now we are looking for hardworking people in NY to join us as a car buyer.

This position will need to call dealers, place orders and schedule time to pick up the car when it arrives. You are not selling the cars, you are buying the cars. The reason why we need individual buyers is because those franchised car dealers only want to sell cars to end customers not resellers like us. You are not expected to lay out any of your own funds for this position.

Candidates must have a valid domestic driver's license, clean driving record and basic car knowledge.

You will start earning soon if accepted. This is a great part-time job to earn some quick cash. We also pay referral fees as well.

    Requirement
    1. Valid Driver's license and clean background
    2. Good communication and negotiation skills
    3. Strong Credit History (650 and above is preferred)
    4. Home owner is a big plus

Our business is Booming and we are hiring!! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity so call right away!

You might want to read this article. I would bet top dollar this is what the job is about.

Yeah, that's what I'm leaning towards. I see Enterprise is hiring locally but for $9.75/hr. Hopefully our give-it-away governor will jack the min. wage up to $15 by the time I'm ready.

Being a car buyer would be a hard job for me because I'd want to keep them all.

If she's one of God's creations, she can't possibly be ugly.  But I guess I went too far claiming she was a two-paper bag dog.  The marriage seems to continue to blossom!  ;)

I got a renewal email from Sirius today....Sirius Canada. This year I had paid $120, by telling them I would let it lapse if they didn't give me the same rate as the previous year.

The email says it is now $220 yr, but if I renew early I get it for $160.

I called and told them I would only pay what I am currently paying.

He told me I would be without it and I said I would let it expire and I would sign up in the US since we live there for half the year.

He gave me a hard time telling me the rate would be the full rate. I said I heard my US friends get it for 6 months for $40.

So after all this he gave me almost the same price as last year if I took it today instead of April 10th

I agreed. Instead of $120 it is $124....I think they feel compelled to get a little bit more out of me just to show their power.

Now I need a shower....but, I am good for almost another year, and it is worth $10 a month to me.

I renewed it a couple of months ago for a good price after saying I wanted to cancel it and also after saying I did not want any more auto-renewal with a credit card on file. They agreed to give me a $60 6-month renewal and to bill me every 6 months by MAIL, believe it or not. But I really doubt if I will renew it when the next invoice comes. With hundreds of songs on my phone that I like, there is no need for it.

    Another good article:

The Lucrative, Barely Legal Business of Shipping Luxury Cars to China
High-dollar rides are cheap in California compared to Shanghai, so entrepreneurs pay straw buyers cash to snap them up and send ’em overseas. Automakers want to stop them, but dealers don’t want to play cop.

The help-wanted ad was sketchy and the man who placed it was even sketchier.

Tucked away on a Craigslist talent gigs page in Southern California was a listing for “Assistant to an Exporter Broker Part Time Flex.” Details were scarce, aside from requesting that candidates possess strong communications skills, perhaps even acting experience. Applicants were to send a text message if interested.

I called three days later this past June, and the man immediately opened with a barrage of perks. The money! The hours! No office! Missing from his gushing pitch to me was an explanation of the job itself.

Finally, after prodding, he got to the point: You buy cars for people in China. I front the money. Dealerships don’t want to—

    “Wait, is this illegal?”

“Oh, no, no!” he insisted. “It’s totally legal!”

    REST OF THE STORY

KEEP IN MIND, IT ISN'T REALLY ILLEGAL IT SEEMS, JUST KIND OF SHADY.

I took my car in for a car wash earlier today at the dealership.  Saturday's is the worst day - 1 hour wait.  So I had some time to kill and walked over to the new showroom they just finished redoing.  I walked over to the refreshment bar to make a cappuccino and saw two new salesmen they just hired - both of whom used to work for me.  I had hired both guys and trained them how to appropriately and successfully sell new and pre-owned vehicles.

It was the best 45 minutes I've spent in many months - reminiscing about the good old days.  They are both in their 40's - but I hired them when they were newbies to the business.  I used to prefer hiring new people for sales positions who had no prior experience selling cars.  I detested salesmen working in the business who brought all their bad habits with them from their previous dealerships.

Both guys are very successful and one of them who has been at this dealership just 6 weeks had already sold 15 cars.  What was very nice about meeting both guys is that they both shook my hand and thanked me for teaching them the car business.  Both are reserved and laid back - excellent listeners which is an essential attribute in successful car salesmen.

It surely is a small world at times.  :)

I have always opted for the bill in the mail route for 2 bucks. There is no way I'm going to give them my CC number.

FWIW, I like XM radio and am willing to pay for it. It's Mrs. j who thinks I'm nuts. Having 2 cars with XM it seems like we are always getting an invoice in the mail for one of the cars. She's the one that writes the checks so one time she said, "why don't you take care of this, you're the one that likes this stuff". To which I replied, "remember when I screwed up the check book right after we were married and you told me to keep my hands off of it that you'd write the checks from now on, remember that"? "Well, as the obedient husband that I am I have followed that order all of these years"!

I guess you are all RIGHT! She is who she is - from what my son tells me, she has a heart of gold.

He describes her as having a bit of separation anxiety - she is constantly making sure he is with her when he takes her for long walks. If she gets too far ahead of him on the extension leash, she looks behind her and sits and waits for Justin to catch up to her. He has a similar problem when he goes to work at 6:00 AM - he built a "doggie exit/entrance" in the rear door of his house so she can go out and come back inside whenever she wants. It tends to get very hot out where he lives in La Quinta, CA (105+ in summer) so she can come indoors whenever she gets uncomfortable.

The separation anxiety is obviously due to her previous family - they must have neglected her and/or left her alone quite a bit. She looks healthy and eats well according to my son. She is also taking well to the boys, which is important since they spend 3-4 days a week with my son.

Like I said, the match seems to be working out well. I think it will take several months before she feels completely comfortable and secure knowing that she is part of a family now that loves her and welcomes her with love. ;)

If we get another dog (and I really think we will) I am thinking a rescue pup would be the way to go. Dogs show so much appreciation for those who save them. :)

I just ordered a water filter for my new Whirlpool refrigerator.  The light on the inside panel turned amber alerting me that the filter for ice and water needs to be replaced.

The company that makes the filters for most of the major brands had a special offer - if you sign up for a subscription to have one filter sent by FedEx every 6 months, you save $16.00 per filter and they ship free.  The net cost for the filter was $36.00 and change including tax, which really isn't too bad.  The company I contract with for my plumbing, electricity and appliances wanted $50.00 + tax.

I didn't even know I had a filter for water in the new fridge.  If it weren't for the amber light, I would have never known.  I am not a techie!  :o

You really think a rescue dog knows they are being saved?  I didn't think dogs were that sensitive or emotional or that instinctive.  I had a dog growing up and she was so intelligent and loving and protective of the whole family.  My Dad believed in corporal punishment - so every once in a while when I was a brat, he would come home from work and come storming into my bedroom and hit me with his belt.  The dog would get up in front and growl and bark and show her teeth until my Dad had used up his anger on me.

I miss that dog as much as I miss my Mom, Dad, Grandparents and my wife.  :'(

    @driver100,
Regarding your refrigerator filter, did you look at one at Home Depot or Lowes?
Our newish fridge has an air filter and a water filter.
Speaking of filters, one of my kids had the air filter along with the oil in their 2009 Escape replaced.
The dealer also said both front lower control arms needed to be replaced due to missing bushings.
They charged $200 for each lower control arm, plus labor.
We looked up the price of the parts on the Ford website and they were listed for $170.
Pointing that out to the dealer the next day, they agreed to drop the price $30 each and took 10% off the adjusted bill.
    Saved a good service customer.

I was the one who bought the filter, explorer.  No I did not look the filter up at other sources.  I figured buying from the company directly would save some money.

Every 6 months sounds like a short life for a filter - how many filters would you go through if you were a family of 4? . Our 12 year old Whirlpool requires a new filter every year but I change it every 2 years since we are only here half a year (ours doesn't have a light, I have to mark it on a calendar)

I say try to find them on Amazon, pay a bit more and change them once a year. Sometimes the first one goes early if it is the same deal as an ink cartridge....the first ones last about half the time.

If the new one lasts more than 6 months, I'll just cancel the subscription or change it to one a year.  Thanks for the info!
