Dogs are such a part of families and these pictures are great. Stick, maybe it will turn around, but I'm sure you'll do what's best no matter how hard that is. I think cats get a bad rap. They are often more cautious initially, but over time they can get to be good pets too. Dogs, cats - love them all. But like people, the end can be so hard, but the memories are forever.
They say that a dog is man's best friend and cats are man's strange roommate.

On the other hand I found an ad for car dealer transporter in Tampa but the pay was only $8.05/hr. Not sure it would be worth getting out of bed.
Not sure about that, it is money for doing something we all love to do driving cars. And if you want you can make more money by driving slow.
I'm sure that's what these employers are counting on. Get some overqualified individuals for next to nothing because they love driving cars. Funny about what you said about making more money. Whenever a new driver expresses concern about getting lost I tell them to remember that the longer they are lost the more they get paid. B)
I would see it as a way for retirees to earn a little walking around money. While it's not a lot of money it does give you something to do. And it beats standing at the entrance to wally world saying hello to everyone coming in.

The dog I grew up with had to be euthanized at 12 years old. The loss still affects me at times when I think of the happiness she gave me in my teens. When I got angry at someone or something, she was there. When I cried, she was there. When I was sick or injured, she would never leave my bed. She was a Godsend! :'(

abacomike - I sure appreciate your views on canines. I see that most everyone on Edmunds - us oldtimers on here, feel pretty much the same way. My wife and I have had two Pomeranians pass away - one when I was in college in mid-Missouri, and the last one happened at our Willcox, AZ, home in Dec.2009. That Pom, named Rocky, was only 6 pounds and he loved my wife something fierce. That early morning my wife called me on my cellphone early - must've been around 6:30AM - I knew something was up. Rocky (he had a heart murmur and who knows what else was wrong with his little heart) was having trouble breathing. Mrs.iluv didn't even want to leave him on the bed to take a shower she was so concerned about him. I called the other RT at the hospital to come spell me for the day - he was such a big help because he volunteered to help me and take my 12 hour dayshift that morning.

I got home and the Mrs. said "Daddy's home, Rocky!" She handed him to me and I knew he was in bad shape because his little head just smacked in to my stomach. Rocky died right in my arms - the Mrs. said he waited for Daddy to get home. We drove to a vet so they could verify the death but I did that for her - I knew he was dead. I buried him in our backyard in Willcox, AZ. Our first Pom, Abby, died in June of 2004 at the same age- 10 and also of heart troubles. :'(

Now we have the 8 y/o Chow Chow and the soon-ta-be 12 y/o Pomeranian, Cotey, left. Cotey's getting older and he has that Pomeranian affliction of the collapsing trachea to deal with - it makes him cough sort of harshly for a minute or so every several hours. Not much can be done to alleviate it.

They're such dolls - they love us unconditionally - they go nuts when we get home! :p

@stickguy - I know you'll make the right decision about the dog. You'll miss them, but then you get another one and start over. That's what we did. Then we added another. And another. As noted, they are pack animals so they have one another to play with.

@abacomike and @jmonroe - the base Genesis is RWD, not FWD. V6 has 300 HP, give or take, so probably not all that different from the CLS400. And, the deals are pretty incredible at the moment. Lots of incentive money available. I just don't think the Hyundai service levels are quite up to MB standards. But - who am I kidding? Mike doesn't keep his cars long enough to have to worry about that.

Thanks, Michaell, I kinda knew that all Genesis models are RWD, which is what is most attractive to me since I do not like FWD vehicles. My CLS400 has 329 hp and 354 lb.ft. of torque due to the twin turbos. 300 hp is quite a bit less in the Genesis.

I am not in the market for a new car right now, that's for sure, but when I do get the itch, which is usually a year or so after purchase, I am going to seriously consider the Genesis.

Rebounded a bit overnight, but decided to pee all over the place again. Could be diabetes got out of whack, or kidneys finally failing. But, in to vet this afternoon to get checked. At least, unlike last night, does not seem to be in distress.

And we won't be getting another one, at least not before we eventually relocate.

RB...I had that N55 with a performance pack (basically, a chipped version the dealer installed) in my previous 335i and an auto. Gotta say, probably one of the sweetest drivetrains I've ever driven in any car I've ever driven, at any price. I can only imagine what it's like in a lighter, smaller 2.

Have had two dogs and two cats, and countless fish in my lifetime. All wonderful pets that were a joy to me and the family. And yes, when they pass, it's like losing a family member.

Given I travel so much, and don't have anyone at home to care for a pet, I can't see getting another anytime in the forseeable future.

Great seeing all the 4 legged family members shown here.

This forum has gone to the dogs.

I don't mind them, but I have always been a cat guy. Here are my current inmates:

This is Coco, just a little gal (here checking out some whisky I bought):

This is Fred, a muscular mouser of some renown:

And this is Rusty, just a massive cat, not fat but big. A gentle giant:

They are nice companions to talk to and take care of when you're living by yourself.

To get us back a teensy bit to cars, do any of you have a good harness or other system to recommend when traveling with dogs? We will soon be driving our 67 pound lab mix across the country, and I think a safety system is in order when traveling on freeways etc. She normally sits in the back seat.

One neat gizmo is a hammock setup. I looked at them but never bought it. Ours usually rides in the back of the SUV. Though getting a barrier screen is a good idea if doing it over long distances!

We have a leash connection one but never use it, since he doesn't ride in the back seat.

Google dog hammock. There are a bunch. This is just a sample

I have a very good system for protecting the seats as she already rides there. I mean a harness system so that in the case of a sudden stop she would not become a 67 lb missile.

The hammock helps, since it provides a barrier.

Can't help with the harnesses that snap into the seatbelt, but I know there are a lot of versions. I've just never used them.

Well, here's the thing. I grew up not all that far from several well to do suburbs. The old rich tended toward Buick's and Chryslers, or even Ford LTD's. The new rich liked the luxo cars. So judging a person by a car is not really correlated.

Oh I wish that were true then I wouldn't have to justify my hoopties to anyone. Truth is people judge based on all sorts of material accessories...watch, clothes, car, house. You name it.
But dogs don't care...they love you no matter what you drive.

Well OF, what did you decide to do about the buying luxury cars job? Remember, it isn't illegal, I don't think you could lose because they need the cars,....you may have a guilty conscience and may not sleep at nights knowing you would be operating in a gray area.
I'm always wary of any promise of "big money" anyone who plays on the edge of legality is probably not one you would trust to pay your commission.

On the other hand I found an ad for car dealer transporter in Tampa but the pay was only $8.05/hr.

$8.05 an hour! The good news is the cost of living in Florida has to be one of the lowest in the US. You can buy a pretty nice home for under $250k, and day to day expenses are about the lowest like property tax, no state tax, and you don't need to buy winter clothes!
True. You could even sleep on the beach...

...which you would have to do if you were only making $8.05/hr. :p
lol about the beach. There is a lady who sleeps in the woods behind the local McDonalds, and she uses the washroom there. We'll figure out something for you. :p

I remember a long time ago I actually figured out what it costs the average person to get out of bed. I calculated utilities, laundry, toiletries, and breakfast. Not adjusting for inflation, and not including costs that would be incurred by staying IN bed (mortgage, rent), and not including costs incurred if you actually LEFT the house--it was something like $15-$20 bucks to open your eyes.

So at $8.05/hr, you wouldn't even break even until about 11:30 AM. B)

    .

I believe that the M235i gets the performance package as standard, as the engine is rated at 320 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. Having that much twist available from 1300 rpm is really amazing. Even though the 2ers acceleration times are virtually identical to those of a Mustang GT Perf. Pkg or Challenger Scat Pack, it feels a lot faster- I'm sure that's due to the N55's insane torque curve.

We are a licensed car wholesale dealer headquartered in New York and do business across the U.S. We buy and resell lots of luxury cars. Now we are looking for hardworking people in NY to join us as a car buyer.

This position will need to call dealers, place orders and schedule time to pick up the car when it arrives. You are not selling the cars, you are buying the cars. The reason why we need individual buyers is because those franchised car dealers only want to sell cars to end customers not resellers like us. You are not expected to lay out any of your own funds for this position.

Candidates must have a valid domestic driver's license, clean driving record and basic car knowledge.

You will start earning soon if accepted. This is a great part-time job to earn some quick cash. We also pay referral fees as well.

    Requirement
    1. Valid Driver's license and clean background
    2. Good communication and negotiation skills
    3. Strong Credit History (650 and above is preferred)
    4. Home owner is a big plus

Our business is Booming and we are hiring!! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity so call right away!

I'd be very wary of this company, OF.  They are using you as a buyer of luxury cars - in most States, you need to be licensed to buy that many cars.

Why would this company need to know if you own your own home?  Something smells fishy here, OF.  If you are buying cars in your name, there could be problems such as insurance, liability,  license fees, State business taxes, etc.

Before doing anything I would consult with the BBB and an attorney.

I totally agree. this sounds like a big time SCAM!

If it's any consolation, some of the best dog teams in Alaska are in fact genetic minestrone, so to speak.

I think my son said she is part German Shepherd, Retiever and Sheep Dog.  From the picture he sent me that I posted, it would appear she has a combo DNA like that.

The other day, a woman was walking two dogs past our house. One was a Golden Retriever and the other one was a mixed breed. We chatted for awhile and I asked what breed the puppy was. I found out that the Golden was the puppy's mother and the father was "Whatever jumped over our back fence"

All of this talk about Kosher Delis is making my stomach ache for a old fashioned brisket sandwich on that thick Jewish Rye. However, in spite of quite a few Jewish people living in the greater Seattle area, there isn't a good deli to be found. I've heard that a couple opened and ended up closing.

When I lived in So., California we would drive 30 miles to West Hollywood to eat at Greenblatts. Wonderful place that as now a very counter culture dive. Sad....

Craig...I'm betting the requirement of owning your home easily establishes residency (removing one red flag of the dealerships and/or manufacturers). Plus, filling out any sort of credit app at least establishes that the buyer had good enough credit (at one time) to qualify for a loan.

I think those two things would make it easier for the potential "employee" to be able to make a lux car purchase.

You'd have to admit, coming from inside the business, you find out someone has bad credit and/or doesn't own their own home, knowing that up front, you'd probably spend very little time with them trying to sell them a car.

During my first year in the California Desert as head of a school, I was sitting in my office working on some budget items when one of my teachers came running in and said I had to come outside quick! So, I jumped up out of my chair in my office and ran outside, following her closely behind. The kids were circled around a scorpion crawling on the concrete walkway. Now most of you would think, as did I, that scorpions are about 3 inches long and have a raised stinger tail-like structure. Well, it had a raised tail-like structure all right, but it was 10 inches long.

I immediately cleared the walkway of all the anxious students and asked one of the 8th graders to get me a large plastic bowl or container with a lid on it from the science lab. When he returned, I covered the scorpion with the container and maneuvered the container so I was able to get the scorpion contained and sealed inside. I then when into the kitchen and put the container in the freezer. I agreed to allow the science teacher of the 8th graders to dissect the scorpion with rubber gloves, scalpel and clamps the next day.

In the science lab the next day, we had the entire middle school (about 80 students) sitting in chairs and desks and we had a TV camera with a monitor so the kids could observe what was happening. The science teacher dissected the scorpion - but first cut off its tail to prevent and miscalculations when cutting it up. We had newspaper photographers there and even the local ABC news affiliate had cameras and a reporter present. Of course we showed up in the newspaper the next day and on the local news that night - great publicity for the school.

It seems that large scorpions like that are a rarity in the heavily populated Palm Springs area (and its heavily populated adjoining cities).

When you live in an area that is inhabited by indigenous species such as bats, Date Palm Rats, rattlesnakes, etc., you have to be alert all the time. I was bitten by a black widow spider one morning when going out to the dumpster to throw out the trash. My hand blew up like a balloon - had to go to the hospital emergency room for treatment. The desert can be a dangerous place if you are no constantly on your toes. :o

Over the years I've come to the conclusion that every area has something. I understand the Recluse spiders in the south and Midwest are worse than Black Widows; more aggressive and worse bite.

I spent 10 days at the Deauville Hotel on my honeymoon in July '67. Pupernick's was right across the street and I went there a lot of nights at around 10 PM for a deli sandwich just so I didn't have to go to bed hungry. I could do that back then but not now. :disappointed: Mrs. j still talks about how large the servings were of the homemade cakes they served. I never saw cakes that high before or since. One slice was enough for 2 people easily.

I don't think Pumpernick's is around anymore but they were alive and well in the late '60's. Great deli!!

Yes, I remember the Deauville when it was first opened.  IIRC, it was at 79th Street and Collins Avenue, close to the Fountainbleau and not far from the Americana.  Most of the hotels in the north Collins Avenue area have been replaced by condos.  The Deauville was considered a very ritzy hotel in the 1960's.

I wonder if anyone remembers Corky's Restaurant in North Miami Beach.  Same style of food as junior's, Pumpernick's and Wolfie's.  Miami Beach was what Las Vegas is from 1947-1980' but no casinos.  Now, in Broward County, we have 7 casinos.  The one I used to frequent has Blackjack, Poker, Slots, and very soon, Craps and Roulette.

The few scorpions we've seen around here were less than an inch long and reportedly getting stung by one is no worse than a bee sting. The one centipede I saw was a bit freaky. The snakes are easy - usually they look like dog piles and you naturally avoid them anyway. :D

I grew up in the California desert. Went barefoot a lot too. We got used to all kinds of nasty critters -- just part of childhood there. We learned how to identify them pretty young. Never had a bite or sting. Then I came to the Midwest and found out the hard way that I was allergic to bee stings.

huh. my BIL has 2 golden doodles, but they are tan. Very friendly dogs, but they really think they are people (though I suspect that is more about how they were raised!). Smart too.

This forum has gone to the dogs.

I don't mind them, but I have always been a cat guy.

I agree. Nice looking cats. Three are about as many as I want to have around at once; two is a better number for me.

Cats or dogs....we are not prejudice around here :p

    Need an opinion.

I plan on retiring next year and I'd like to dabble as a driver in a car related area. I was looking at the help wanted ads and found an odd posting. Does this sound legitimate?
    ----------------------

GG, not totally a scam GG........it is not illegal to do this. Gray area definitely. Maybe the car manufacturers should hire middlemen to sell their cars into countries they don't want to set up dealer networks in. I don't think the buying agent would put up any money and these traders need these guys, so I don't think you could lose. If you have a conscience you may not sleep too well at night, but nothing illegal yet.

I might set up my own company and buy luxury used cars to these foreign countries. Less hassle with used car guys, they won't care who they sell to.

    Mike,

Yes, the Deauville was just a few blocks from the Fontainebleau. I remember one night a few of us newlywed couples that were staying at the Deauville waked down to the Fontainebleau to see Patti Page performing. The Fontainebleau was thee established hotel to be sure but the Deauville was fine for me and Mrs. j.

How comes if the Deauville was so ritzy we had to go someplace else for a floor show? :open_mouth: The amenities and rooms were quite nice and the meals were pretty darn good too but no top tier entertainers.

I stand corrected about the base Genesis V6 being FWD. It is in fact a RWD like Mod Michael pointed out. My ignorance is from not being the least bit interested in a Genesis V6 and that at least one Hyundai dealership in the Burgh area said he will only order the AWD version due to the winters we have. But that is really a joke because our winters don't have nearly the snow that say Chicago and Boston have. It is very rare when we get a snow fall of more than 6 inches.

The day you buy a Genesis is the day Pittsburgh gets 18 inches of snow in late June. Just ain't never gonna happen.

    @jmonroe:

JM, there comes a time when there are more important things to do with one's money than buy high-end cars.  I just went into the donut hole with my health insurance company.  That means I pay 50% of the cost of all prescriptions until I pay out of pocket another $4800.  Four of the 12 medicines I take are branded which means a 90 day supply costs $1056.  The others cost me $425 for 90 days.

Insulin costs me another $900 for 90 days.  So since I had the heart attack, it is costing me about $1200 a month just for prescriptions and to see a specialist, $15.00 per visit or another $90 a month.

Before I spend another dollar on a car, I have to consider my health.  That's why this is the last Mercedes-Benz or any other premium luxury car I will ever buy.

    @jmonroe:

The Deauville Hotel in the early 1960's was a premium hotel on Miami Beach.  I have seen great shows there.  But, the Doral and the Fountainbleau hotels were the epitome of luxury and show business.  Martin & Lewis performed at the Fountainbleau as did Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Durante, Henny Youngman, Don Rickles, Rowan & Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., etc.

I couldn't afford to stay at the Deauville for my honeymoon - that's why we stayed at the Castaways - 30% less per day for the room.

I was watching Fox News Channel - they showed a cute puppy - looked like a golden retriever - who prayed before his meals.  The owner got down on his knees to say grace by the dog's food tray and the pup bowed down and closed his eyes during the prayer.  That's CUTE!!!

We had Guinea Pigs for many years, but we haven't gotten another one since Elwood passed away. Jake his brother passed a few years ago.
Our neighborhood pet, however, has made a reappearance. I took this pic in the fall of 2014.
