abaco - Indio is a cute pup. She looks like she is loved and she'll just no doubt continue to be a better and better pup for your son. If we get another dog (and I really think we will) I am thinking a rescue pup would be the way to go. Dogs show so much appreciation for those who save them.
You really think a rescue dog knows they are being saved? I didn't think dogs were that sensitive or emotional or that instinctive. I had a dog growing up and she was so intelligent and loving and protective of the whole family. My Dad believed in corporal punishment - so every once in a while when I was a brat, he would come home from work and come storming into my bedroom and hit me with his belt. The dog would get up in front and growl and bark and show her teeth until my Dad had used up his anger on me.
I miss that dog as much as I miss my Mom, Dad, Grandparents and my wife. :
'(
We may be attributing human qualities to animals. The dog knows it has a nice home and food on a regular basis...food is a big motivator for dogs. They like the attention of humans, and they like to hang around us in case food comes their way, but appreciating a nice home.....mmmmm I don't think so.
One thing I like about dogs, whether you drive a $250k Bentley or drive a 1999 Dodge Caravan, dogs don't really care.....they just want to go with.
I finally was able to post "Indio" successfully. This is the dog my son rescued. When I mentioned she was ugly, I took it on the chin from a few of you - I guess you felt no dog is really ugly.
If she's one of God's creations, she can't possibly be ugly. But I guess I went too far claiming she was a two-paper bag dog. The marriage seems to continue to blossom!

Oh, no ...quite a bit of scientific testing has gone into testing the emotions of dogs and they are pretty highly evolved creatures.

That;s what my high school art teacher said when your picture had nothing going for it......he was too nice to say it looked like c--p, he'd say, "well, it is interesting",
Oh, no ...quite a bit of scientific testing has gone into testing the emotions of dogs and they are pretty highly evolved creatures.
They haven't tested our Gigi, I don't think she thinks in terms of being thankful for a nice place to live.
On the positive side, I read not too long ago that if you can't spend a lot of time challenging and playing with your dog, it is better to have a dog that isn't too intelligent. That way they don't get frustrating wanting to think or be active all the time. Gigi is content to sleep 70% of the time.
Funny, she does know time. She knows to whimper if I don't feed her or give her her Dentastik at 8 p.m.
Oh, she's kinda cute--I was just kidding. I hope she didn't read my post.
If it's any consolation, some of the best dog teams in Alaska are in fact genetic minestrone, so to speak.
I think my son said she is part German Shepherd, Retiever and Sheep Dog. From the picture he sent me that I posted, it would appear she has a combo DNA like that.
That's the issue - when you're old enough to get the discounts your memory is so bad you forget to ask..
LOL.
E.g., Wendy's and ChickFilA in some areas have a senior discount. In others, you get a funny look from the teenager behind the counter.
I pulled thru a drive thru a few days ago and ordered from the speaker stand. The girl said something, maybe $3.00. When I pulled up to the window, this cute teenager says Thr---eh, $2.70. I grinned at her and asked if I just got the sexy guy discount. She grinned back and said yeah. I think she will go far.
Aba - that dog looks so very happy and it sounds from you that your son is too. You can't ask for better than happy in life.
A dog can be your best friend in good and bad times. I don't know if you live near your son, but if you do, I'll give you a couple of visits and you'll be stopping and getting treats for it on your way over. A good dog loves you unconditionally and a good owner ends up the same with their dog. It truly becomes part of the family.
But save those two bags, you'll need them for the bones and treats you bring over and the stuff you gotta pick up when you walk it

Unfortunately, he lives in La Quinta, CA, about 8 miles east southeast of Palm Springs in the Coachella Valley. I used to live in Palm Desert, about 2 miles from La Quinta. That's about 2,500 miles from where I live. So I probably will never get a chance to bond with Indio. BTW, Indio is the name of the city adjacent to La Quinta.
My doctor won't allow me to fly in a plane at those altitudes for more than an hour. I think it's because my legs swell and the lower amounts of oxygen in a plane. So I usually fly my son and his SO here once or twice a year. I am hoping they will bring my 16 year old grandson with them.
But my son loves dogs and dogs tend to take to him.
Your situation sure sounds unfortunate, but it is impressive how you keep mostly upbeat despite all of this stuff that's happened and going on in your life. Maybe you should get a dog - nah, just kidding.

I would love to have a dog. But two things keep me from adopting one : my condo community allows only working dogs (if you can get a doctor to sign a letter indicating you emotionally need a dog companion, that is acceptable), and I have enough problems taking care of myself - a dog needs lots of care - at least three times a day it needs to be walked. If I was healthy and younger and I lived in a house with a fenced yard, I'd have two dogs. But an apartment is not a great place for a dog. Although the dog I had growing up lived with us in a small 2-bedroom 5th floor apartment.
BTW, I grew up in Queens in a small apartment (shared a bedroom w/my brother) and we only had one bathroom. For the life of me, I don't know how four people can co-exist in an apt. With just one bathroom. I do remember being hurried frequently by family members who needed access to the bathroom at the same time - moans and groans, etc.

At least as guys you could keep a McDonald's cup for any emergencies while waiting
McDonald's? You have to be kidding. We didn't have McDonald's when I was growing up. We had White Castle - period! I do remember my first McDonald's cheeseburger - Huntington, Long Island, NY on Rt. 110 (Walt Whitman Road) just off the Long Island Expressway - 1965/66, IIRC. That was our hangout when I was a teenager and started driving.
I didn't realize NYC had sliders. Never saw a White Castle there or in NJ when in the area. Atlanta had those imitation WC Crystal Burgers. Now some of Florida has Steak 'n Shake. WC started in Ohio I believe and SS in Illinois. When I was in high school, the Chicago suburbs Big Boy's had a drive in area like Dog 'n Suds. Of course you had to circle and rev a few times before being given a landing slot

I still buy White Castles here in Florida, but the frozen ones. Not quite the same, but at least they are nostalgic. We had a tiny White Castle joint on Queens Blvd. and 43rd Street in Sunnyside, NY, a block from my apartment. It had a counter and 6 stools. 95% of their business was carry-out. The hamburgers were 10 cents each and their slogan was, "buy'em by the sack!" To satisfy one's appetite, you had to eat at least 6 of them (we called them sliders). In the 1960's, they added cheeseburgers. They always had lots of minced onions and a pickle slice. They were sold in these little cardboard boxes.
When I was a kid, we'd (all my friends) go bowling or ice skating at the old World's Fair site in Flushing Meadows and we always stopped off at White Castle and buy dozens of sliders and we'd all go over to a friend's house in his finished basement and consume them like pop corn.
Boy, those were some great times - and great memories.
The exporter articles are interesting but it makes me wonder why slightly used prices of such vehicles would not then be through the roof. The exporters should be bidding each other into a frenzy at auctions. But that does not seem to be the case.

Here's Meggy May, our soon ta be 8 y/o Chow Chow, at 3 months of age. This one loves me fully completely. When I'm on the desktop here she snuggles in next to my legs. I will occasionally kick her, forgetting she's there she's so quiet. Oh yeah, they get under your skin.

That is one adorable, fluffy puppy. But I don't know if I'd be as anxious as the dog to snuggle up to your feet! It takes more than love to withstand the aromas that usually accompany the close proximity of the human foot!
Gonna play Devil's Advocate on the buying in the U.S. and shipping to other areas of the world.
Let me get this straight....car manufacturers don't want buyers to buy cars here and send them overseas to make money on them because the manufacturers want to sell sell their cars there to make more money?
So, it's OK for the manufacturers to make more money, but not brokers?
That is a nice car bwia and I sure do like that interior. This seemed like a pretty good value comparatively though. A 2016 Maserati starting at $72000.

Very cute! Ours was 6 mo. Old or thereabouts but was quite ill. She was found near a bike trail. Once we paid more to get her healthy than we would have to get a purebred, she's been in excellent health ever since.

Down here, I see tons of Genesis Sedans. There are great benefits to buying one of those - luxury and convenience in the price range of an average, every-day vehicle. Great warranty and superb comfort. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a Genesis owner and lover. Quite frankly, I am definitely going to look at a Genesis very carefully the next time I get an urge to buy a car. From what I have been reading, Hyundai is changing it's identification/designation of their luxury vehicles. I believe, IIRC, they will be called G90's, G80's and G70's, or something like that. The Equus would be a G90, Genesis Sedan a G80, or something similar.
Down here, there are 10-15 Hyundai dealerships so the competition is very keen. I've been 2016 Genesis Sedans advertised for $38,500. For what you get for that price, it's a real bargain.
JM, how does it handle on the highway - smooth, harsh, sporty, mushy? I have to believe they ride and drive similar to a Lincoln. What say you?
I would add we have a neighbor in Florida who has a 2 year old silver Genesis and it is a nice looking car. I really like the interior especially. And, nothing wrong with 420 horses.
I was watching a segment about the New York Car Show and they were talking about the new Jaguar. A beautiful car and starting at about $35k. Interior is gorgeous. And they mentioned the reliability has improved a lot, and they now offer a 5 year 50k mile warranty.
I just got in from driving up to Lake Worth to pay respects at my father's grave stone. I sure do miss him - even with all the stress and work keeping him as alert and healthy as I could.
On the way back, I always stop off at a NY Kosher Deli just off State Road 7/US441. Today they were very busy, which is really not unusual for a Sunday. I sat at their counter and ordered a side of fried Kreplach and sauteed onions with mushroom, a diet cola and a lean pastrami on rye. First the waitress brought out the pickles and coleslaw. Their coleslaw is to die for. Then, she brought out the drink along with the Kreplachs. For those of you who are not big city dwellers in the northeast. a Kreplach is much like a Pierogi or a Won Ton dumpling, but three times as hefty and filling. Usually, they are served with Chicken Soup in place of a Matzoh Ball. They are extremely filling and doughy with a kind of meat mixture in the center. After eating 5 of those with the onions and mushrooms, I was DONE! I couldn't eat another thing. So the waitress was kind enough to put the sandwich in a plastic box and I brought it home with me to have later on toward dinner. It is a nostalgic type of food for me, much like White Castles. Cost of the lunch, without tip - $24.95. You can see that to be a lover of Kosher Style Food, you need to be wealthy or be lucky enough to have your family own a Kosher Deli.

Just get a Genesis Coupe next time. You'll never get any respect in a sedan.
Well, here's the thing. I grew up not all that far from several well to do suburbs. The old rich tended toward Buick's and Chryslers, or even Ford LTD's. The new rich liked the luxo cars. So judging a person by a car is not really correlated.
Can you get that great NYC rye bread down there? Chicago doesn't have much of that anymore.
MOST DEFINITELY! That's how my Pastrami Sandwich is held together - with real sour seeded rye bread and a great crust. You seem to forget, berri, on the southeast coast of Florida is where New Yorkers who are used to great cultural foods come to die. But as they slowly "fade away", they like their soul foods.
Back in the early 1950's, I used to come down to Miami (Coral Gables to be exact which is where my maternal grandparents had a home) during Christmas and Easter Breaks (now called winter and spring break). My grandpa used to drive my brother and me over to Miami Beach at Lincoln Road and Collins Avenue where we would have lunch at Wolfies! They were right on the corner on the beach side. It was a huge restaurant and all the big stars used to frequent the place for their deli soul food. I remember we sat at a table right across from Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis once and another time we had lunch with Jimmy Durante who was a close friend of my grandfather's along with Henny Youngman, a comedian.
In the lae 40's and in the 1950's, Miami Beach was a kind of Mecca for tourists. They had nightclubs, hundreds of post hotels and restaurants - it was the "IN PLACE TO BE" during the fall, winter and spring months. I remember the olden days with the Fountainbleau Hotel, the Eden Rock, the Doral, the Blackstone, the Americana, etc. It was like living in another world for a couple of weeks.
Now, South Beach is the place that is the most famous - Ocean Drive between 1st and 15th Streets. They have all the Art Deco Hotels on the west side of the street with sidewalk cafe's and a huge beach right across the street. But I would not go down there today - no place to park and lots of problems in the evenings.
Mrs. Carnaught and I got married at the Doral Hotel.
Remember Junior's and their cheesecake? A friend of mine still gets them shipped once a year from the only one remaining, in Brooklyn. Thought there were no more deli's remaining in S. Florida.

I do remember Juniors, but it was not a real Kosher Deli - it was Kosher Style. Pumpernick's was another famous restaurant fown here in the 50's.
My wife and I spent our honeymoon at the Castaways way up on north Miami Brach. Della Reese was our next door neighbor - she was performing there that week. Our rooms opened up in the back to a private beach for those guests staying on Honeymoon Island. Those sure we're the days way back when!

Funny, my sister and BIL now live in the high rise on the exact site where you were, right on the ocean where the Castaways was in Sunny Isles. Small world.

But, that was then, this is now.

Remember Junior's and their cheesecake? A friend of mine still gets them shipped once a year from the only one remaining, in Brooklyn. Thought there were no more deli's remaining in S. Florida.
