Interesting round with body shops / collision centers this week. I think I posted here about being hit on my way to work Monday morning. Minor damage to my Cadillac, but has to be fixed. I was apparently in the other driver’s blind spot when he decided that he needed to make a left turn, so …
My insurance company, USAA has authorized the repairs, no deductible as the other driver was at fault. And they sent me a list of their authorized repair facilities here in my area. I can use any repair facility, but if I use one of their authorized facilities I can just drop off the car and not have to deal with estimates and that whole ball game.
But… (you knew there was going to be a “but”, right?)
Due to the recent flooding here in the greater Houston area, all repair facilities are backed up. Most of them on the list are telling me a minimum of 2 weeks before they can get to me. I found one that will take me in next Monday, the 16th, so I jumped on that one.
USAA has also agreed to spring for a rental car starting now, not when the car goes in the shop. This due to the right front headlight being out, so that I can’t drive the car at night. So today I called Enterprise (the anointed rental car vendor for USAA). Boy, those people are no fun to deal with. None. At all. They have me in the system, I am preapproved, but they can’t tell me what rental car I can get. They know that USAA is good for $39.50 per day, but they’re not at all sure what I can get for that rate.
Seems they have one rate for individuals, and another rate for insurance companies, and the lady I spoke with on the phone couldn’t tell me what I could get. She would “get back to me on that”. Which was about 6 hours ago, and hasn’t happened.
A few weeks ago Mrs. j's 2012 Subie had to go to the shop to have the right front fender replaced due to a hit and run driver. The insurance company I have also deals with Enterprise and I was allowed to get a full size replacement.

I can see the ad agency now...."Toyoda-san, ad campaign costs $100M. We will make sure every man, woman and child see the bank robber ad at least 1,217 times"
Before long, the Prius name will be synonimous to bank robbing.

When I go through a subdivision with a lot of speed bumps I know that I am driving through an accident prone area. Since conditions are undoubtedly hazardous I take action to protect myself and warn others by blowing my horn for 3-5 seconds at each speed bump- especially after 10:00 PM. @Mr_Shiftright, $800 sounds like a bargain. Did you have to wash some dishes or clean some windows too?
No but I do send him business and give him cookies at Christmas. He's a good solid mechanic for general repairs. If I had to do something ghastly and horrifying on a Mini, like replacing the clutch (artfully protected from invasion by Mini engineers), I'd probably not stick him with that. He's a great welder, which is handy to have around town, and he knows all about trailer hitches, and custom exhaust systems. Good dude, Dave. He looks like he would gladly eat you like a chicken wing, but he's a pussycat.

One of my neighbors used to work for Houston Metro as a diesel bus mechanic. But like many here in the ghetto, he has a problem with alcohol and can't seem to hold a job. But when he's sober, he can fix most anything. He has no tools and no place to work, but I have quite a bit of tools, two good floor jacks and jack stands.
Two years back, he replaced an air control valve in my Tahoe. The ones that always go out, and cause one side to blow cold and the other side hot. Dealer wanted $600, independent wanted $400. O'Reillys had the part for about $125, and he charged me $50 to install it. I found a video on Youtube, he watched it, and did the job. Took him about 3 hours, and most of that time in a very uncomfortable position. I tipped him quite well afterwards.
He has done brakes, and shocks, and tune-ups on several cars and trucks for me. He does quite a bit of work like that around the neighborhood, and sometimes borrows my floor jacks and a few tools.
Just as Shiftright said above, you wouldn't give him a really hard, complex job, one that would really need special tools and equipment. But the majority of work that comes up doesn't need anything special.
I was over to the casino last night for dinner at their Italian restaurant so I decided to put my player's card into one of the machines and play some penny slots just for fun. After about 1-1/2 hours, they were drawing names for a gift card to Neiman Marcus in Boca Raton. I heard my name called so I went up to the stage they have there and showed them my ID and player's card and they handed me, what I thought was, a $250 gift card. So I finally won something - but as I said to myself, what could you possible buy at Neiman Marcus for $250? Maybe a half dozen socks or a six-pack of undershorts.
So this morning, I stopped off at Neiman Marcus after my usual walk around the shopping mall. I was right, there isn't much I could buy with $250.00. So I picked out some socks and underwear and the sales associate took my gift card. After ringing the sale up, he said you know you still have about $800 left on the gift card! I said WHAT? He said the gift card was for $1000.
I asked the sales associate to cancel the sale and I started looking at some "higher" priced items. They did not carry my size in shorts and I didn't need any shirts, so he took me to the wallet and luggage department. I was thinking to myself that I did not have a good piece of luggage for traveling - like if I wanted to go up to see my brother. He showed me some TUMI luggage. It was about 1-1/2 times the size of a full size carry-on bag, almost twice the size. $850.00? I said you've got to be kidding. He said no, remember this is Neimans and we carry only the very best. Since there really wasn't anything else that I needed. I took the TUMI luggage - it has 4-wheels on the bottom with a pull-up handle. I also got a bottle of Chanel "Homme" cologne ($92.00) and called it a day.
So now, if I visit my brother up in Ponte Vedra, I don't have to put my toiletries in a couple of shoe boxes and stuff clothes into a tiny bag. I actually can travel in style now. Good thing I don't fly anymore - no way would I allow an airline to touch my $850 luggage and either damage it or,lose it which is even more probable.
Never been in a Neiman Marcus store before - but I can tell you the sales associate treatment is unparalleled and the service unsurpassed. But I guess if you are spending $850 on a piece of luggage that you can buy anywhere else for $250, they ought to treat you like a King - and I was.
The NMA is about the most straight-shooting organization I've come across in life. The misinformation tends to come from insurance companies, government, and associated entities that profit from those two things.
You must not have come across many organizations. In situations like this I look at who is telling me that 2 plus 2 equal 5. The NMA tells me that 2 plus 2 equals 5 a lot, they tend to present one side of an argument and center on studies that support their position and ignor those that don't.
The fact they published the letters of correspondence from the engineer and members word for word completely unedited in their newsletter attests to that. See for yourself; I posted a link.
I looked at that link and it does not say what you said it says.
What is it you think I think it says? It is in plain black and white for everyone to see and read; plain English. The engineer admitted that they don't add wide bike lanes due to the number of bicyclists using the roadway (that would be too logical I suppose), but instead does so with the hope it will reduce travel speeds of vehicular traffic.
They want to CREATE and ADD Congestion to our roadways, rather than help reduce it.
Just because you put "NO PARKING" signs up doesn't mean less cars need to park in a certain area. They will just park elsewhere nearby.

The NMA is not the one ignoring studies, they just happen to find deep flaws in studies done by Insurance-backed gangs like the IIHS. They far from ignore them, they point out the deep flaws in the studies. Your attempts to refute Soloman were met with deep flaws themselves, and seemed half-hearted at best. Also, there have been numerous studies that reach the same conclusions as Soloman.
Another great example of flawed studies include ones where red light cameras and/or now speed cameras are shown to improve safety under a false unproven theory of a halo 6 degrees of separation effect. They take credit for intersections without cameras nearby that have improved safety records after installing cameras at OTHER Intersections. I can't make this stuff up. The fact gov't officials and Red Flex camera CEO have plead guilty to serious corruption charges speaks volumes.

Mike, don't feel bad. My recently replaced DVR player is now doing what the old replaced defective one was doing, not getting subscribed channels. Oh, and when I replaced it I lost over 30 DVR'd programs. While I was fussing with it, just now, I got a robo-call to my extra-cost privacy number. Gotta love these electical gremlins, etc., that we pay dearly to have, and count on.

I'm laying here in bed with my Sirius Internet App piping in love songs on Channel 17 (Love) with my Bose earphones plugged in. At least I've still got that. But I'm burning up data for the first time in years. No WiFi because my internet is also down. T-Mobil does not charge data usage for downloading streamed music from Sirius, Apple Radio, IHeart Radio or any other source. But I like playing Words with Friends and Word Steak which uses a ton of data. I'm usually on WiFi here at home. I have 1-gig of high speed data and then it drops to slower download speed after that. The most data I burn a month is 40-60 Meg's - I'm already at 150 Meg's just today alone. Not fun!

I love Tumi luggage. I learned a long time ago not to go "cheap" when it comes to luggage. If a wheel comes off while you're walking down a cobblestone street in Italy, it kinda ruins your day.
Currently own: 2017 BMW M4, 2011 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X Used to own: 2008 VW R32, 1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport, 1987 BMW 325IS
Never did get the wheels and frame thing - so much easier just to put a daypack on your back. Lots easier to stuff in the overhead or even under the seat in a pinch too, and you aren't carrying around that extra weight all the time. But I pack light and can go for weeks with a 1800 cube pack.
Much nicer driving these days if you can, especially with the latest TSA lack of incentive to clear people to their gates.
Mike, thanks for the info about the 2017 E400, and the explanation for the early models having 4 cylinders. I would like another 6 cylinder model, though I will say at one time I thought nothing but an 8 would do.
I'll be watching to see how the new Email is reviewed, and I'll test drive one one day.
I can't type much....away in Victoria B.C. until Monday. Typing on a tablet is very trying. This is one of the worst inventions ever.....wish I had brought my little Netbook.
Unless you have an older tablet, there should be a little mic icon on the keyboard. Works well on my wife's iPad3; unfortunately the iPad1 she passed down to me doesn't have that feature.
I forgot about that dictating feature, but, it has problems, 1) I can't think and write at the same time, 2) My wife will think I am crazy.....we are in a hotel room.
Does your pad have the feature where you drag your fingertip over the letters of the word you would type and the chip figures out which word you meant. It's faster than typing. My Tracfone LG calls it Path Input. I've learned that stopping or slowing on the letters I want as I drag helps the accuracy on difficult words.
Coupled with Word Suggestion and it guesses the word in the text but offers related words in a strip and I can choose the correct one if the chip guessed wrong.

Agree about TUMI luggage. Tumi and TravelPro Platinum are the only two brands I use. I'm in and out of airports just about every week. Rolling them through apirports, up and down escalators, in and out of overhead bins, over blacktop, in and out of car trunks, etc.
Hartman leather luggage looks better, but is not as durable.
I probably go through a rollaboard every 5 years, and a briefcase.computer bag every couple of years.

Let's hope I get a chance to use it. It's big enough to pack for a week's vacation - shoes and all. But it has to be checked - much too big for carry-on but perfect for a road get-away. I looked the model up online at their Orlando store - $875. So I got a bargain at Neiman's - $850! I stole it, didn't I?
Edit: I just looked at the price tag - I paid $875! I should have known better!
I don't think it says anything, since I actually read what was on the page your referenced I know that the traffic engineer was discussing slowing traffic as it crossed from an open area to a more congested area.

Also, there have been numerous studies that reach the same conclusions as Soloman.
Soloman is flawed because of two issues. First it doesn't take into account stopped or turning traffic which should be accounted for. Secondly it doesn't take into account the times that the speed of the car at the time of the accident is a self reported speed (which has it's own issues).
The only studies I have found that agree with Soloman also state that when taking the above issues into consideration the soloman curve flattens out at speeds at and below the normal flow of traffic.\
Now the NMA promotes one side of the issue and does so at the expense of studies it finds does not support their views.
As I say I look at who is telling me that 2 plus 2 equals 5, well the NMA has done that. Not only that they at times told me that 2 plus 2 equals 3.
Now the only "deep flaw" you came up with about what refutes Soloman was that there is no stopped or turning traffic on interstate highways. While that is true there were few highways up to interstate standards during the time that the data was gathered (the early 50's).

Yes I bought a new roller every year or so but at only $40-50 I felt like I was ahead of the game

For the first year, the luggage is warranted for all hazards including airline damage. Years 2-5 warranty is for materials and workmanship.
No, I would never spend $875 for a piece of luggage - but since I paid for it using a gift card, why not? If I had to fly somewhere, I'd buy a cheap carry-on piece of luggage.

Ford? I seem to remember seeing a picture of Henry driving something like that.
Wait, I checked and it's not the same.
Speaking of Fords, the dealer down the street still has 4 new 2015 Mustangs, 3 of which are 5.0 models. In addition they have brought in a few used ones as well. This place is bizarre. Never called me back when I was shopping and keeps unsold units forever.
Maybe they're seeing how long it takes them to rust. I wouldn't be so obsessed except I drive by every day.

That's another way to do it. I've lost too many laptops, ruined too many clothes, have put up with the hassle of luggage breaking in the middle of Charles DeGaul airport to want to do that again.
So, for me it's a matter of priorities. I want something that lasts. That said, my TUMI and Travelpro I buy on sale at etailers for far less than retail.
I agree with GG - I spend a good chunk on a new carry on every 5-7 years and a new briefcase every couple years.
I use a very durable Briggs and Riley bag for all of my travel. I never check, either, unless it's absolutely unavoidable. Generally, I can pack for 7 days of business travel into a carry on without much trouble.

I was just watching an episode of Counting Cars which featured this 1959 Corvette:
I know they build gassers for a specific purpose but I think it just ruins the look of a classic. I guess I prefer when they restore an old car to it' original condition rather than turn it into something it never was.
On the other hand I wouldn't have a problem putting modern internals like engine, brakes etc. into a classic to make it perform better as long as it looked the same from the outside.
Hey Farmer, I was talking to a new Mustang owner at my local watering hole today and he mentioned a "line lock" feature to lock the front brakes for burnouts. It and launch control activated from a screen. I had not heard any guys on here mention these features. Apparently , if you want to leave at 3000 to 4500 rpm, you enter the number, put the gas to the floor, and a rev limiter holds the rpm at your chosen level until you let go of the clutch.

My guess is that most posters here are not childish enough to do burnouts. As far as I'm concerned all it is is a big loud "hey look at me". And not only do they reduce your tires life but it negatively affects your acceleration.

Yeah, even the auto tranny has that. It locks the front brakes but leaves the rears to spin like heck for up to 15 seconds. A little icon comes up that says "for track use only".
As to the maturity of doing burn outs I'm pretty immature but that's outweighed by my cheapness at not wanting to buy new tires so I haven't done too many.

Launch control on my 2er works pretty well; all you do is put the car in Sport+ mode, put the transmission in Sport mode, apply the brakes fully with the left foot and floor the accelerator with your right foot. A checkered flag pops up in the IP cluster which indicates that you have three seconds to release the brakes.I hope to try it out at the local drag strip in a week or two.

Before long, the Prius name will be synonimous to bank robbing.

They want to CREATE and ADD Congestion to our roadways, rather than help reduce it.
Just because you put "NO PARKING" signs up doesn't mean less cars need to park in a certain area. They will just park elsewhere nearby.

Much nicer driving these days if you can, especially with the latest TSA lack of incentive to clear people to their gates.
I'll be watching to see how the new Email is reviewed, and I'll test drive one one day.
I can't type much....away in Victoria B.C. until Monday. Typing on a tablet is very trying. This is one of the worst inventions ever.....wish I had brought my little Netbook.

figures out which word you meant.

Keep in mind, I am a dinosaur with all this technology, maybe I should not get a 2017 E400, maybe look for a Lada.
Btw....I am using a Galaxy10.

Hartman leather luggage looks better, but is not as durable.

No, I would never spend $875 for a piece of luggage - but since I paid for it using a gift card, why not? If I had to fly somewhere, I'd buy a cheap carry-on piece of luggage.

So, for me it's a matter of priorities. I want something that lasts. That said, my TUMI and Travelpro I buy on sale at etailers for far less than retail.

I use a very durable Briggs and Riley bag for all of my travel. I never check, either, unless it's absolutely unavoidable. Generally, I can pack for 7 days of business travel into a carry on without much trouble.

As to the maturity of doing burn outs I'm pretty immature but that's outweighed by my cheapness at not wanting to buy new tires so I haven't done too many.
