    About today...

Veterans' Day honors those who served and came home. Memorial Day honors those whose family
did not have a veteran come home: instead they have only a picture, a flag, and a Purple Heart.
And perhaps a Gold Star for the mother.

Thanks, 'imid'. That cartoon says it all.

I have to remind my 5 grandkids (4 boys and one girl) about this every year and I'll do it again when we have our cookout in a couple hours.

While I am technically a veteran, I almost feel like I am cheating when I say yes when some one asks me if I am a veteran because I served in peace time with no one shooting at me. The closet I came to that was when we were flying in armament to Key West Florida during the Cuban Crisis. Did several of those flights and that was as close as I ever got. Just lucky, I guess.

    Thanks again for the post.

My dad was a vet, too - one stint in the Navy back in the 50's. Deployments to Guam and Kwajalein, but based in Southern California.

My uncle who served in Vietnam was career Air Force; however, I learned not long ago that he served in the Navy before joining the Air Force.
    Michaell,

Your uncle left the Navy for the Air Force, really?

Either he couldn't swim or liked long runways. Which one was it? :p

    jmonroe
I would love to ask him; sadly, he passed away a couple years ago.

He was a tail gunner on a B-52 during Vietnam, and once had to bail out of same over Florida.

I remember watching the "Green Berets" with him - he was a font of information about the weaponry used in the movie.
When we flew, the crew had shoots but I never wanted to even look at them. Happy to say I never had to put one on.

I remember one flight where we had about 60 Marines on a C-130. One of them said, "what are those"? I said you don't want to even talk about those. We only have enough for the crew"? That Corporal almost fainted. Who said Marines are tough"? :D

He also suggested that I put on Continentals or Michelins when I need new tires.  They wear better than the Pirrelli's I have on the car now.

Ha! When you need new tires?

    Puh-leeze.
Funny! But at this moment in time, I have no desire nor do I want to spend the money to buy a new car this year or next. I'm just going to "have to" live with what I've got - and that's not too shabby an ordeal, is it? I just turned 3,800 miles on the 2016 CLS400 that I bought on November 22, 2015. So I am putting less and less mileage on my car than ever before - 600 miles a month is peanuts. I could probably use Uber for my transportation needs instead of driving an $80,000 car.

But seriously, there is absolutely no reason or available money to spend on new cars any more. It is what it is! :'(
No one explained what you do if you register low tire pressure and you aren't near a station that has nitro, if that is what you are using. If a service guy comes will he carry nitro?

Air may run out sooner, but at least it is readily available. It sounds like a RFT situation....great idea, until you are stuck in nowhereville USA on Christmas Day, with a flat RFT.
No one ever said you can't drive a little further if the tire light goes on. But I'm sure the AAA guy will have a N2 bottle for an upcharge. B)

I don't know why anyone would not have a 12 volt pump in their trunk. Hell, I have two of them, just in case. No, I'm not kidding. I used to be a Boy Scout before I joined the Navy.

    jmonroe
Thanks for the info about Nitro being on the AAA truck, or similar service.

How many times have you used your 12 volt pump? If I carried a pump with me something else would go anyway, and you can't be prepared for everything. Blankets, sleeping bags, food rations, lighter, fuses, fan belt, rattle snake bite kit, bottled water, life jacket etc. I have a friend who is ready for almost any emergency he may face on the road, I don't think he has ever used any of it. I could have used a pump, but, not an emergency, just went to a gas station and paid my $1.50. I'd rather do that once every one or two years than have to call for a service truck that has nitro aboard.
For myself I used my pump twice but I could have waited until I got home. Both times in the employee packing lot. Since I had the pump why not use it. I have loaned it to several fellow employees. If I had to guess, I'd say about 6 times. Once they knew I had it they relied on me. I'm also glad I put it in my sons van when we went to Myrtle Beach about 5 years ago. He had a slow leak and needed it 3 times. I don't know why he didn't have one because he knows I have always had one. He has one now but not a spare like I have.

As for carrying all that other stuff you mentioned, I don't.

One of my dad's friends was a B-25 Mitchell pilot during WWII. He was flying a practice mission along the blacked-out East Coast when #1 engine started to overheat. The closest airfield was a located at a Navy base. He requested clearance to land and was told that the runway lights would be illuminated once he was in sight. The lights came on and Dad's friend said that it was the shortest runway he had ever seen. He dropped onto the tarmac as soon as he crossed the fence, reversed the props, and leaned on the brakes- but there was no way he was going to stop. Just as he reached the end of the runway more lights came on- indicating that the runway was actually much longer. The Navy guys in the tower had-intentionally-activated the carrier training pattern in order to mess with the Army Air Corps. The controllers had to barricade the door to keep the pilot from breaking in and killing them...

You may have been closer than you realize jmonroe. My uncle was in Naval aviation based in Florida during that time and he said the jets were armed and running hot on the runways and taxiways waiting for the order.

I know that and I saw jets running off the Key West runways way more times than normal. Constant noise.

That was a pretty scary time for me. After we flew in the first time I thought that would be all for our crew but it wasn't. I'm pretty sure we did it 4 times. At one point every plane in our squadron (we were based at Pax River Naval Air Station in MD) that was flight ready were all hauling in cargo to Key West. I never once saw that all of our planes were in one place at the same time. They were either at Key West unloading or taking off from Key West to get more war stuff. And to think, we were only 90 miles away from Cuba.

That was the kind of excitement I didn't need.

Hm, I thought I'd cleared that a few hours ago. Let me check....

Sheesh, 6 show up in one place but only one shows up when I go to see what got flagged. And your one dates back to Stories from the Sales Frontlines days - that must be ancient history. Come to think of it, I thought that one had been cleared a while back too. I think I got it.

Dunno, you may have to log out and log back on again to zap the other 5..

The abuse flags are pretty worthless here since we are, er, pretty actively moderated. But they come with the package I guess.

That one from the Stories from the Sales Frontlines days should stay for life and never be resettable.

wife and I need to get on some sort of diet too. I probably have an extra 20 at this point, but I could live with 10-15!

Figure out how many calories you use in a day....average male about 2500.
Eat food that keeps you below that amount.....it won't be a lot of food....make sure what you eat has nutritional value.
You have to burn 3500 calories to lose one pound....it you didn't eat for one day you should lose about .6 of one pound.
Diet accounts for 90% of weight loss, exercise about 10%.
One of those corned beef sandwiches would probably equal running for about 3 or 4 hours to burn off the calories, french fries about 5 hours!
How many calories you use a day is dependent of your weight and activity level. A 200 pound man uses twice as many calories as a 100 pound man walking the same distance. Someone will use up more calories walking 2 miles as opposed to one.

The percentage of weight loss from dieting and from exercising will duffer from person to person depending on many variables.

Calories burned is not a function of time ran but of distance ran. You will burn off the same amount of calories running 5 miles regardless of if it took you 30 minutes or 45 minutes.

Remember that people tend to overestimate calories burned and underestimate calories consumed.

That being said I have one day left of my long weekend (more later) so I am going to enjoy this morning with a 50 mile bike ride.

Last I checked I had six, but only one post showed up when I clicked on that area in my profile. That particular post could have been considered microaggression by sensitive people, of whom there was apparently one. Looks to me like the other five were reviewed by the moderators and removed from the file. The number remains though, which I'm going to figure is a programming glitch.

Back again. Away for a long weekend and busy with my daughter's graduation with an AS in American Sign Language. Next year when she goes for the bachelor's is when the expense really hits the fan.

So, while up in New Hampshire for a Memorial Day party that I do almost every year on the Sunday of the weekend, my brother shows up in his Volt, so I finally got to put one through its paces and I'm very impressed. Just for me he put it in sport mode. I have no idea if that really does anything. Since it runs entirely on electricity it's quick (the gas engine is just powering the generator). Not Tesla quick but quite nice. Even with the gas engine on it's very, very quiet and quite fun to drive. I can see what he sees in it but it has very little cargo space. His guitar was technically a back seat passenger since it couldn't fit in the hatch.

I remember once clicking on "flag" on somebody's post by mistake (meant to click on the "quote"). Don't remember who. Could not "unclick" it.

Last night I watched the movie, "The Intern", starring Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway.  It's the first time I saw DeNiro in the roll of a man who was laid back, kind, caring, loving, fatherly and considerate, all in one character.  He is the most versatile male actor I can think of.  If you haven't seen it on HBO this month, take a couple of hours to put your feet up and settle into a great movie experience.  B)

De Niro is versatile, but in my book "true actors" are Gary Oldman and Daniel Day Lewis. First one - from a demonic corrupt cop in Leon the Professional to ridiculous villain in Fifth Element, to an ordinary guy in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, to magical uncle in Harry Potter, and so on, in most of his creations, it takes you half of the movie to realize it's the same person under the "mask". He can change his physical appearance, voice, accent, mannerisms, everything. Same with the Lewis. Compare it with some superstars, say, Tom Cruise, or Jack Nicholson. Both great entertainers, but you know who they are from their first to their last shot. They guy you see is Nicholson playing Nicholson, doing Nicholson, by Nicholson. Same smile, same voice, same pauses in sentences, same everything, villain, or hero, rich or poor. Just like Cruise. It's entertaining, sometimes worth buying a ticket, but not the same.

Come on Mike, don't be so sensitive.  The people that count - the frequent posters in the forums - think you are the tops.  Don't get down because of some coward that gives flags instead of openly telling you they don't agree with you.  You have enough things to worry about - your health, your sons health, hurricanes hitting Florida - without using your strength getting upset about silly flags.

So Snake - how about pizza? I actually prefer thin crust and lean toward Auerillio's out in the western (and southwestern) suburbs. My favorite thin crust though is in Rockford, IL at Lino's. Sometimes I'll go for a deep dish instead like Due's. But there are just a whole bunch of good pizzeria's both in the city and in the suburbs.

I like thin crust and Auerillio's is pretty good. I usually get mine from a local ma and pop place called Poppa's which is one of the better ones around. While not a fan of deep dish I do get one once in a blue moon or two.

Not Tesla quick but quite nice. Even with the gas engine on it's very, very quiet and quite fun to drive. I can see what he sees in it but it has very little cargo space.

Is his the second generation that's new for 2016?

I thought the gas motor kicked in and ran the car when you ran out of the ~50 miles of EV power, giving you a range of ~400 miles before needing to gas up.

There was one near here in El Paso a couple of weeks ago; would like to check one out too.

Great job on the weight loss/lifestyle change guys!  It's NOT easy!  My best friend lost a lot of weight and has changed his body!  He tells me everyday what a struggle it is.

On the subject of Diet Coke.  That is probably the worst thing for you.  Not only is it pure chemicals, but it actually makes you crave sugar.  My best friend always says:  look at the people you see drinking diet coke.

Some say that diet drinks make you crave sugar, others say it satisfies that craving. From what I can tell the jury is still out. However there are studies suggesting both sides.

Two good reasons you see heavy people drinking diet sodas, first is that they just started their diet and the other is that many people think that since they have been good drinking the diet stuff they can have other high calorie foods negating the effect of drinking low calorie drinks.

I think you can manually opt out of EV mode on the new Volt. Some might choose to do this on high speed freeways, since EVs are more efficient in city driving.

Hm, "the 2017 Volt's quieter 1.5-liter gasoline engine/generator no longer requires premium fuel, and it achieves an EPA rating of 42 mpg combined, a healthy 5-mpg improvement. [T]here's none of the range anxiety that plagues purely electric cars, because the gasoline engine is always ready to kick in and propel you more than 400 miles between fill-ups." (review)

Best of both worlds. Or worst. :)

All I know is the Safelite guy told me a new Safelite windshield would cost $700 installed. An official Mercedes windshield with a decal would cost $1300. According to him they were made exactly the same and came from the same factory.

What would you expect a Safelite employee to say? "Our windshields are considerably cheaper because they are crap"?
You would be surprised how many replacement parts come off the same assembly line as OEM parts.

The usual implied rumors are on the internet about the glass in the OEE brands being thinner and not doing something or other. But they are things most people can't evaluate. Sort of like the allegations about brand name OTC products versus the generic versions, e.g., Allegra and Equate brand fexofenadine for allergy.

But the windshield is a part of the car's structure for crash worthiness. The adhesives and the windshield itself have to be the same or the replacement has reduced the crash worthiness of the vehicle. Safelite would be paying out on lots of lawsuits over injuries from crashes, more than Takata airbags faces, due to having diminished the crash safety of the vehicle.

So I dropped off my 2015 F150 at the dealer this morning for the Check Engine light being on. They gave me a ride back to the house so I can take the rental car and go pick up my Cadillac at the body shop. The good news is the Cadillac seems to be actually fixed this time. The bad news (you knew there had to be bad news, right?). The bad news is that Enterprise says I owe them $169 on the rental car. I tell them to leave that open until I can talk to my insurance. Which is no problem, they (USAA) have now agreed to cover the rental car through today.

So back to the F150 and the Check Engine light. I dropped the truck off at about 8:45 this morning, and still haven't heard from them. Except to receive an email, with a web link to the repair order. Very 21st century.

But check the line that says "Customer Pay". I'm really, really hoping that is just a mistake. We're talking a truck that is barely 8 months old, with less than 4k miles.

Aba, all anyone can do is live for the day. Tomorrow is never certain. Middle Eastern terrorism and extremism has at least brought Americans back to understanding the importance of a strong military. I think we kind of lost that for awhile after Korea and Vietnam.

Actually it wasn't until after Korea that we maintained a strong standing peacetime military. Traditionally, up to the start of the Korean War the U.S. military during peacetime has always been a small force that could be quickly augmented with state militia units which could increase the size of the army by as much as 10X.

While I am technically a veteran, I almost feel like I am cheting when I say yes when some one asks me if I am a veteran because I served in peace time with no one shooting at me. The closet I came to that was when we were flying in armament to Key West Florida during the Cuban Crisis. Did several of those flights and that was as close as I ever got. Just lucky, I guess.

    Thanks again for the post.

Hey, don't sell yourself short and don't minimize your part. You put on that uniformed and served that makes you just as much as a veteran as anyone else. remember that during the Cold War things could have gotten real real fast.

The trend now is towards smaller, professional, well-paid and extremely lethal armies, if you can afford all that. Screaming hordes don't last very long on a modern battlefield.

I knew you'd be proud of me, Keith.

My brother's Volt is first generation. He leases it, figuring the technology would improve which indeed it has. The ones are quieter? That would be hard to do. It was already quite quiet. To be quiter it might have to be all electric.

Indeed it never runs on gas. That just powers the generator which is why GM says it's not a hybrid. YMMV.

The new ones indeed run on regular, a big plus in my book. They also seat 5 providing one is a midget and the cargo space is bigger but tops out at 10.6 cu ft which is hardly spacious. In theory my Miata trunk is half that size but I can fit a guitar in it,

Screaming hordes never did last very long on battlefields. Even in ancient times most battles were won by the more professional force. You had to keep your forces tight and acting as one, otherwise you were toast. It was the army that broke first and turned into that screaming horde were the ones slaughtered in battle.

wife and I need to get on some sort of diet too.

That's all true but to make it easy to understand an average man burns about 2500 calories a day. An average woman about 1800. That's not a lot of calories for meals and snacks. If you have cereal (300 with milk) and toast (150 a slice), orange juice 150) for breakfast you could have consumed 600 Cal. A hamburger and fries for lunch could be 800, and chicken, veg and potato easily 800 for dinner. Doesn't leave a lot for dessert or snacks.

If I play tennis for 90 minutes, play pickleball for 2 hours, walk the dog for about a mile a day, my pedometer registers about 11000 steps, walked equivalent of 3 or 3 1/2 miles, and I burn at most 350 calories....350 calories is what is in one bagel or donut.....and a lot of chocolate bars...that is a lot of exercise for very little calories burned.

I guess if you get a flag click someone (moderators?) gets to decide if it was abuse, spam or whatever. I didn't figure any of this out until a few months ago myself.
