Great movie, but I like this car scene better.

As I recall, didn't he end up there because he tore his oil pan out on a rock and the oil made him lose traction up a hill? He drove the car for quite a while with no oil. Must have been some Hollywood magic or else they don't build 'em like that any more.

You can actually run a car without oil for a minute or two, especially at idle. (Don't try this at home. )
And you can drive it for at least a mile without water too at speeds not over 30 MPH. Here's what a long time fellow worker and good friend told me about what happened to his '75 Caprice wagon in the late 70's before I knew him:

The wagon needed a water pump so he took it off and headed to the auto parts about a mile away with the bad one as a core deposit for a new one, driving his wife's car. Yeah, you know where this is going. As he steps out the door of the auto parts he sees his wife driving his wagon down the road. He said he is screaming as loud as he can for her to stop as he is chasing after her with the rebuilt water pump in his hands. She doesn't hear him and just as he is about to stop running after her and head back to her car to run her down, he sees her pulling into a strip of shops about 2 blocks down the road. She parks the wagon and is now headed into the grocery store.

He finally catches up to her and is totally out of breath. He puts the water pump on the ground and is bent over with both hands on his knees, gasping, barely able to talk. His wife said, "what are you doing here. I thought you were in the garage doing something". I better not say all of what he said to her cause this is a G-rated site.

He tells his wife not to move the wagon, in fact he takes the keys, and tells her to take her time shopping. He puts the water pump on the front seat of the wagon and heads back to her car at the auto parts. He goes home and gets his tool box and several gallons of water. Goes back and replaces the water pump in the grocery store parking lot. FWIW, he said he never had any problems with that wagon and traded it about 3 years later.

Every time I think of him telling me that story I can't help but laugh. I hope I drew a good enough picture of what happened so you guys can chuckle too.

Well, I'm still hoping to see Cleveland win the series in my lifetime. Congrats to the Cubs, but a tough loss. I saw many of the current Indians players as Columbus Clippers.

Was Cleveland's massive choke against the Atlanta Braves the last time they were in the World Series before this Cubs Series this year? Noticing a pattern here, as the Atlanta Braves and Buffalo Bills shared a penchant in their respective sports for choking when it mattered back when I followed sports more closely.

Cleveland did NOT have a massive choke when they lost to the Florida Marlins in Game 7 in 1997. They were 1 strike away from winning it all.

    Now that's a story and a half!

I noticed in the owner manual for my son's Cruze that it can be driven when overheating. However, the oil has to be changed immediately after stopping. I assume it goes into a limp mode with cylinders alternating to lower the damage.

Shifty - the reason I'm very apprehensive about "low mileage, off lease cars" is the 2000 Saab 9-3 I leased from December 1999 - December 2002. I lived on the Upper West Side of Manhattan & commuted up to The Bronx. I would pull out of wherever I parked on the street, drive maybe 1 or 2 minutes (in the dead of winter), and floored it getting onto the Westside Highway at 79th Street. That was a fun car to drive. I pulled into the dealership (with the DTE showing 1 mile) with exactly 36,000 miles on the odometer. The salesman said he's never seen that before. Most people come in a little over or under, but never exactly at the mileage. He then joked with me (without seeing the DTE) and asked if there was enough gas in the car to drive it behind their building. I said, yes. It's downhill. You should make it.

Well deserved for the Cubs. One of the best games across all sporting events I've seen in my life given the level play and the history of both teams.

It was a great game and series, this last game aged me a few years. I still can't believe the Cubs came back from 3 games to 1.
Royals did that is '85. Down to St. Louis 3 to 1 and won the last 3 in the famous "cornfield series". When the Royals won last year, Zobrist should have been MVP. He was only in KC for one year, but wow, what a player, and fine person. He was our spark plug all year (from July) and during the series. Stingy Royals chose to keep a couple of home grown players over Zobrist because of money issues. Dumb move.

Congrats to the Cubs. I was pulling for them, partly because of Zobrist. Game 7 was a masterpiece, not so much from a coaching standpoint, but because the players played so well.

Glad you said that....I was looking for a My Pillow at Walmart the other day, since it was so highly recommended. Looks like you saved me $50.

One problem I find is, how do you test a pillow. You kind of hold it in the store and put your head on it and then hope it feels good when you get home.

The My Pillow ads are great, pure Snake Oil Salesman, If you have trouble sleeping,,,,and who doesn't, this will cure all your problems.

Hadacol sold lots of tonic that a lot of people swore fixed their ills.
Same for the Sisters' recipe in the Waltons.
I guess the same devotion holds for automobiles that people hold despite the shortcomings; they will swear their car (tonic) is the best thing since slice bread. LOL

When people get a vested interest in something, be it real or perceived, and because of that people will tend to exaggerate the good and down play the bad. This is the reason why self reporting surveys tend to be unreliable.

Our 92 was actually a 9.5 and we loved that car...so did everyone who was a passenger in the backseat. It was a really well designed car, and fun to drive. I suppose it may have been better before GM bought a 50% stake and management control of the firm in 1989, and gained full ownership in 2000. The Swedish company's car sales peaked at 133,000 cars in 2006.

I tried an after GM Saab and it wasn't the same, since GM was running low on funds they didn't have any money to bring Saab up to standard. When I bought my 2008 BMW 328 Cabriolet I tried a Saab convertible. Fin to drive, but kind of dated, especially the FWD.

I still think I made the right decision buying when I did.
Looked for a long time and a lot of the vehicles I looked at sold because I couldn't pull the trigger.

I just bought tennis shoes from Tennis Warehouse. I checked to see who has some in the area and I would have to drive about 20 miles just to try some, and who knows what kinds these little stores sell. So I ordered from TW, free shipping over $100 and free return if they don't fit. Sometimes buying online is a good thing.

    @jipster,
One of my kids sold their 2004 Escape to CarMax earlier this year.
It had 140k on it and still had original plugs and coil packs.
Drove it a few months earlier and the engine still ran great.
Had some rust issues and was going to need new brakes and tires.

What year is your Civic @jipster?

In a year or two would like to look at a semi new Buick Regal. Sporty comfort. How's that minivan of yours doing?
In case you missed my reply to your post on my wall, the Quest got over 200k and we then we suffered hard to diagnose distributor problems with it. That was around 2.5 years ago. Got that fixed in Detroit and then the AC died. So we sold it to a kid cheap on craigslist up in the UP since we planned to move to New Mexico. Got an '09 Grand Caravan and used it to move in (3 trips). It's about to hit Shifty's mandatory retirement age of 170,000 miles.

That's why I was wondering about your Civic - the new Civic Hatch is pretty nice.

My first car was a Camaro. $300. The special lightweight model (thanks to all the rusted away sheetmetal).

Just tell him sure. If he can pay for the car and the insurance, go for it.

Well, told him he get the same deal his sister got. Drive his mother's or my car till his senior year, then if good grades continue I'd buy him a $6,000 non sportscar. That's Non sportscar. :-)

Jmonroe not taking his medication again I see.
The meds were changed and are a LOT stronger.

Stick around, you'll find out. :@

Last time I dropped in, a year or two ago, I dropped your name. Nobody seemed to know your where abouts. So maybe snakie and the rest of the guys weren't taking THEIR meds. :)

Still miss my old 2004 Mazda MPV. Had a lot of fun here talking about it.. and everything else under the sun. Whenever I see a Genesis on the road I still think of your Genny. May she rest in peace. :(
What's your new ride jmonroe... and how many times a month so you wax? B)
I dropped out of here for a while. Came back in March of this year, I think.

My new ride is a '15 Genny V8 with Ultimate Package. See it at the bottom of my posts, its shown there. You have to list yours on your profile page. Anyway, I got it in May of '15 to celebrate my retirement in February of '15. Yeah, I know I'm still a little sloooow. Went to VA to get it. Doesn't even have 6K miles on it yet. Should last me a while and I'll need the time to figure out a way to convince Mrs. j that I deserve a new car in a few years.

Wax ? Sure it's waxed and always has been. I'll give it another coat before Winter. It takes wax just as nice as my old '09 Genny. :p

Bought my Fusion just over a week ago.
Now there is an extra $1000 incentive.
I still think I made the right decision buying when I did.
Looked for a long time and a lot of the vehicles I looked at sold because I couldn't pull the trigger.
The most important thing is to get a good car, which I feel like I did.

    Congrats on your new purchase.

Maybe you can talk to your dealer. You won't get a 1000 bucks but he might give you a free oil change or 2 or 3 or 4 or... You've been around here long enough to know if "you don't ask you won't get".

Try it and let us know. And, yeah, give us some details you don't have to tell us the price but we'd like to know how tricked out it is.

I agree on the Camero. It's a Mustang or nothing. Welcome back. B)

I remember now you had bought a Mustang oldfarmer. I'd like one myself, but with my recent back trouble, don't think I'd be able get inside. :'(

every time I think about having another midlife crisis car next year when I need to make a move, and getting a little (and low) sporty car, I go sit in a few and realize it is probably a really bad idea.

could do it for a spare fun/toy car, but no way from my primary wheels.

Driver, how's your tennis coming along? I got a local pro shop to match the price on a pair of new balance shoes from Tennis Warehouse. Looking to get a new racquet maybe for Xmas.

Explorer, yeah, my Mariner is running good. So a bit reluctant to get it tuned up. It has the same 3.0/Duratec engine my old 2004 MPV had. You have to remove the upper manifold to get to those 3 plugs in the back. A lot of cables and components to detach. The Mariner has a ton of front end torque though. Can probably squeel my tires as good as oldfarmers Mustang. ;)

    That is what I got, New Balance Shoes. Back home I support my local tennis shop, it is nice to support the local guy. Most tennis shops are pretty marginal, but our local guy just bought a new Corvette. Down here I would have to drive 20 miles to get to a tiny shop without much choice. I went all out and gotr the deluxe model;

My tennis game has improved, I am trying to play at the level the guys here in Florida play at, so I have worked hard to get to this level.

Now, I am also into pickleball, usually play one or the other each day. Pickleball is easier on the body but is also a lot of fun.

FWD has some advantages, but that front end torque is hard to deal with, the car just doesn't do what you hope it will do.

You have to consider that by now the selection would be pretty light. That extra $1000 might not make up for having to choose between unsalable lot queens.

The car I bought had very recently been delivered to the dealer. It has a 9/16 build date.
There weren't even any pictures of the car on the dealer website yet.
I'm sure it would have been gone, if I had waited.
Basically, price was $200 over invoice, plus they included a set of winter mats, $1,000 incentive and 0% for 5 years.
The car is very quiet at idle. I left it running a couple of times(has push button start, so no key to remove when turning the car off).

Didn't know they were still using the Duratec engine that late ( you said 2009, right?). Just bought a 2005 Sable with the 24valve for my son. Puts out about 200hp. Might have to test it's wheel spinning ability after he drives some of the old lady carbon out of it.

BTW, the Mustang is so fast it will make your eyes bleed. ;)
