I assume it had a clean Carfax. If it did that doesn't give Carfax much credibility.

As I understand it, there is no penalty, maybe not even a requirement, for a shop that does not enter accident info for a VIN. That pretty much says the industry is on the "honor system" and since this is the car biz, what does that really say?

    jmonroe
It did have a clean Car Fax, no mention of any accident. About a year ago I took the Pilot to Car Max to see, out of curiosity, what they would appraise it for. The Car Fax that they ran was clean as well, yet, the appraiser came to me and asked me if the car had been in an accident as they could see evidence that it had been. They said the Pilot showed and drove well, but they wouldn't sell it on their lot, they would wholesale it.

Salesman called back and said they would take a regular check (not certified) and they won't cash it until later in the week once the funds are in. That was nice because they didn't ask for any credit info from us.

So, we take the Passat in today, and we drive back in the C250!

We bought this almost as fast as JM buys a car!

Well, I suppose I'm just being stubborn on this since I KNOW there has to be a way to restore my old identity.

I do appreciate the kind thoughts from people I consider to be friends.

@ab348, a regular plunger works too. You may have to plug up that pesky overflow hole though. :)

Y'know, I tried a regular toilet plunger and it didn't work as well as this little one. I think the small one lets you work it more efficiently than the big one, which I found tended to slip around much more.

My dad's truck finally sold last week. $5000 to a CHP officer who will treat it right.

Lots of memories with that truck; one last pic for all to see.

Man, that is a real classic.

Why didn't you keep it. I know it was in CA but c'mon man, that would have been worth the ride. :(

    jmonroe
Before he passed, my dad specifically wanted the truck sold, and the proceeds split among the four grandsons. Both my son and my nephew wanted it for themselves, and dad figured to avoid the confrontation by simply selling it.

Plus, I've nowhere to park it here in Colorado, and it's 2WD, which wouldn't go well in the winter.

I'm glad it found a good home.

Surprisingly, I never got a ticket in it.
OK, I get it now. Except for the part about never getting a ticket in it.

    jmonroe
Oh, I got tickets. Just never when I was driving the truck. Took it on a time/speed/distance rally once, with a friend. Largest vehicle in the rally, by far.

Well, given the games @driver100's dealer was playing, what would it have hurt? He could always have called back (when? that would be his choice) and said, "OK, I'll take it for $15,200". If they said it was sold, I would have moved on (really no other choice at that point).

There are lots of cars out there today and if there isn't one today, there will be one in a week or two that you will like just as much and more than likely in less time than that.

Depends on what you're looking for. Weirdly optioned MBs can be hard to find. When someone like me comes up and has a specific list of colors and features, salespeople have been known to run and hide :)

  • fintailfintail Member Posts: 58,522
I've made requests where they've searched nationwide inventory (or so they say) and found nothing. That's one thing that helped me pick the current car (other than end of model year leftover deal) - it was close to what I would want without putting in a special order.

That's a beautiful truck. Just to jog my memory...year, milage etc. etc.

Tough to sell something that belonged to dad. Just sold my father's 1998 LaSabre that my son has been driving for the last 12 years. As I was cleaning it up to sell it brought back memories. Even though dad passed in 2001 it was hard to see it go.

The difference is $15800 all in, between the C 250 and the Passat.
We offered $14000 difference yesterday and they were supposed to call back.
Didn't get a call yesterday, they called this morning and left a message, can't accept $14000.
I have been looking for similar cars and there isn't anything I can find better.
Considering offering $15000, but, not sure if they will then hold out for $15800.
I have to word it carefully.

Do you really want it $15,000 worth? If so then make a counter offer, if not don't bump yourself further. Maybe they'll cave but if they don't you can always find another.

There must be larger sizes than the bathroom sink size. I saw a video of someone cleaning out a shower drain and pulling up a huge amount of nasty stuff. The package makes clear they're meant for one-time use. Just throw the whole thing away.

I have heard about this kind of a mess before. However, I have never heard about a dealer who was willing to give money back because of it. That says a lot about that dealer but like you said, you'd go to an independent shop to have it looked over if you were to ever buy a used car again. It sounds like your car is a candidate for being the "Carfax Poster Car of the Month Duped Award".

In the end, the most important thing is that you still like the car and have had no problems with it.

I wonder if @ab348's plunger would take out the new dent in the van. Just got t-boned a couple of hours ago. Sheet metal really isn't too bad but the rear wheel is bent in to the fender liner. Details here, and we're okay.

Forgot to take the phone while running errands as usual, so no pics, unless the film in my one-time use camera that must be 8 years old is still good.

Ouch! As I recally this van was pretty miled up so financially you should be ok. The important thing is that physically you are alright.

lol, I think @stickguy had it right - the kid has already had a rough start to life.

On the good side, I met a nice guy. One of the witnesses (two nice people stayed for a good 30 minutes to talk to the cop), was wearing a Talkeetna ballcap so we chatted about Alaska for a bit and then it turns out he was a Yooper from Marquette. Small world.

The other witness was kind of interesting. She was polite but didn't talk to either me or my wife or the kids.

The kids wanted to talk to me but I just waved them off and told them the cops would figure it out and the important thing was that no one was hurt.

And yeah, my neck and shoulder will be feeling it tomorrow I'm sure. I popped two Advil dry while waiting on the cops.

lol...and may be true or may not be. But, near the end our salesman said another salesman came over and told him that he had a customer coming in tomorrow to look at the car.

You know what concerned me? In these cases, you let the car go, then you buy one for even more, or you buy one that isn't quite as nice, or you buy one just to get it and it has problems because you are buying recklessly.

We got the exact car we love, and it looks great. I sat in the new C Classes in the showroom and I don't like the feel of it as much. I like the looks and comfort of this one. Drove great on the way home. Love the turbo 4.

There is a shortage at a fair price, and within an hours drive, and if it has the right colors, and if it is bought from a trustworthy dealer..........all the stars have to line up....not so easy.

I really do like the styling on that vintage C class. And just the perfect size for me. I would not mind at all trying to find a nice late 2014 model, since those will be 3+ years old at that point. With a nice option load of course!

or by then, the 2015/16 newer styles will be more affordable. They are nice too.

    RE 2014 C250
The difference is $15800 all in, between the C 250 and the Passat.
We offered $14000 difference yesterday and they were supposed to call back.
Didn't get a call yesterday, they called this morning and left a message, can't accept $14000.
I have been looking for similar cars and there isn't anything I can find better.
Considering offering $15000, but, not sure if they will then hold out for $15800.
I have to word it carefully.

Do you really want it $15,000 worth? If so then make a counter offer, if not don't bump yourself further. Maybe they'll cave but if they don't you can always find another.

I caved.........but over $200. Like JM said, over 6 years thats less than $40 a year, for the perfect car...couldn't be better. Love driving it...it is more fun to drive than the E!

Salesman said they gave $600 more for the Passat which he rarely sees, and took $200 off the new one which he has never seen done before.

We got there at 3, all the salesmans papers were ready and in order. We completed that in 30 minutes, then we waited 2 HOURS to see the finance guy. Had to turn down extended warranty $2000, RFT insurance...found the car didn't have them, wheel insurance $300, stone chip insurance $300, a bunch of other stuff that could add $7000 to the price. Then I must have signed 20 forms....you sign more forms buying a car in Florida than you do to buy a house. Some are if there is a dispute you agree to arbitration......all kinds of forms. Finally left at 6:30PM....a very long tiring day.

Hmmm....probably bent the axle or spindle or whatever is back there.

What's going on? Not sure I want to leave my driveway! Hope everyone is ok.

True, true but that's not a shortage---those are your parameters that make it feel like a shortage---and I don't blame you at all---jes' sayin'.
