That is an interesting comment. I don't mind a smaller rear seat area if it means a longer hood and shorter rear deck. That is what makes Mercedes BMW Audi's and Caddies look so nice.
The Passat had a huge rear seat area, but it had a short hood and cab forward design. Doesn't look as nice, and it isn't as well balanced....drives more like a van or a bus. I need some rear seat room in case we are taking passengers, but 95% of the time we don't use the rear seat....so the design and handling are far more important to me.

One reason President De Gaulle liked his Citroen limousine was that it could escape on three wheels--which it actually did during one assassination attempt.
I doubt an armored limo could stop an RPG though. That's how they got Somoza of Nicaragua, with an RPG-7. They knew the car had frontal armor, which could deflect a rocket, so they attacked from the side and blew it up.
It was a Mercedes, and WIKI says that although the car was destroyed, the engine kept ticking right over.
Probably not something for a Mercedes ad, however.

I was thinking about a President who hasn't driven a car in 8 years landing at Palm Springs Int'l Airport and going to the Hertz counter. When asked for his driver's license, he hems and haws while trying to clear his throat and pulling out his wallet he hands the clerk an expired Illinois driver's license.
Does he get to rent that Cadillac CTS or does the clerk refuse to rent him a car?

Henryn, agree on rear seat room in the Passat, everyone who sits in the back was amazed. You have a turbo I believe, if I got another one I would want a turbo or a 6 cylinder engine, then it would be ideal for city and highway. I love the handling and steering, though it was FWD which is a bit of a drawback for me...just prefer RWD if possible. I'd have to look up the 0 to 60 to know if a 2014 C250 4 cyl is any faster than a Passat Turbo, but cost for a 2014 was probably less than a 2017 Passat.....it was $25k, and $200 (for JMonroes benefit). A new one is probably high $30s. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Passat, just needed more power as now we use it for highway driving too. Two tangibles involved too; 1) I didn't like Audi's attitude toward our premature clutch problem, and 2) I truly believe we avoided serious injuries, maybe even death in our rear end collision because of the design and structure of the Mercedes. I know it performed as well as a car can, and that is a powerful reason for me to trust the brand, and that is a very personal reason.
Like I told our former Passat dealer, I loved the car, and I loved the dealer, it was just time for something bigger, heavier, and more powerful.
Don't think a former president will have a problem! Wonder what he would choose - Didn't he come into office with a Chrysler 300 or some such? George W - probably a truck or SUV, Bill Clinton - some kind of convertible to go with a pair of wraparound shades

I was alongside a car carrier yesterday in traffic that was carrying a bunch of new Passats. I think they're a nice-looking car. One was red, a color I've not seen on Passats previously.

Yes, but the Coachella Valley's western cities (Palm Springs, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Indian Wells, Rancho Mirage and Bermuda Dunes) are staunchly the opposite of what the rest of California is. So don't be too sure about him getting that car - I lived out there in the desert cities for 10 years and those retired millionaires and billionaires think very differently.
That hypothetical situation will result in a secret service agent renting and driving the car.

The default Hertz "luxury" car is a base 300, maybe he'd get one of those and be used to it. Although I think his prior car was a hemi model.

Well, no, the new Passat R-Line cost me $20,151. Advertised price, including all incentives (which I did qualify for all). Owner loyalty $1k, and another $1k trade bonus. Nicely equipped, too, the R-Line comes with satellite radio, blind spot, power drivers seat, and quite a bit more. For an additional $4,200, you can get the SE with Technology, which gives you navigation, sun roof, and LED lights, still less than your 3 year old Mercedes. But the main problem for me with a Mercedes is that I am unwilling to pay the steep maintenance costs.
Speed -- quick check:
The 2014 Mercedes-Benz C250 is powered by a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission are standard. In Edmunds testing, a C250 Sport sedan went from zero to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds.
The 2017 Volkswagen Passat is front-wheel-drive and is available with one of two engines: a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine or a 3.6-liter V6. The four-cylinder is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission, and the V6 is mated to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic (known as DSG).
All trim levels come standard with the turbocharged four-cylinder, which is rated at 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. In Edmunds performance testing, a Passat with this engine accelerated from zero to 60 mph in a relatively quick 7.7 seconds.
Large back seats.....the Passat is hard to beat, it was like a limo in back. The downside for the Passat, was lack of power for todays highways, otherwise a fine car.
Most cars today are pretty good, it just depends on what is important to you and what your budget is.
Most of my GMs from 1979 Cutlass to 92 Cavalier were OK, no major problems, but the 88 Corsica kind of fell apart at 50k miles. It was very minimal and cheap too. The 92 Cavalier was not an engineering masterpiece, but it was pretty good for a minimal model car....the 6 cylinder engine helped.
But we all had our bad experiences with Big 3 cars in the 80s and 90s, because most of us owned them, and it wasn't the golden age of auto manufacturing.

Best backseat room I ever had was the little Chrysler Cirrus.

Today is off to a great start! I decided to look at my broken recliner to see what was the matter with it. Turns out, at one of the pivot points, the screw had backed out. I used an allen wrench to put it back together and it's just like new. Saved myself between $1700- $2000, instead of replacing it. My wife wants to go furniture shopping today, so I'm not telling her I fixed it yet.

I need some rear seat room in case we are taking passengers, but 95% of the time we don't use the rear seat....so the design and handling are far more important to me.
I have to agree with the rear seat being huge on the Passat. If you're looking for that, the Passat is the car you want.
I didn't buy this new one for the rear seat area, I bought it for the price, the performance, and the front seat area. Obviously, I think it looks and handles just fine, so YMMV.
I wouldn't doubt that the Mercedes you traded for is faster and corners better, but remind us again how much more you paid for the Mercedes???

You have a turbo I believe, if I got another one I would want a turbo or a 6 cylinder engine, then it would be ideal for city and highway. I love the handling and steering, though it was FWD which is a bit of a drawback for me...just prefer RWD if possible. I'd have to look up the 0 to 60 to know if a 2014 C250 4 cyl is any faster than a Passat Turbo, but cost for a 2014 was probably less than a 2017 Passat.....it was $25k, and $200 (for JMonroes benefit). A new one is probably high $30s. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Passat, just needed more power as now we use it for highway driving too. Two tangibles involved too; 1) I didn't like Audi's attitude toward our premature clutch problem, and 2) I truly believe we avoided serious injuries, maybe even death in our rear end collision because of the design and structure of the Mercedes. I know it performed as well as a car can, and that is a powerful reason for me to trust the brand, and that is a very personal reason.
Like I told our former Passat dealer, I loved the car, and I loved the dealer, it was just time for something bigger, heavier, and more powerful.
Well, no, the new Passat R-Line cost me $20,151. Advertised price, including all incentives (which I did qualify for all). Owner loyalty $1k, and another $1k trade bonus. Nicely equipped, too, the R-Line comes with satellite radio, blind spot, power drivers seat, and quite a bit more. For an additional $4,200, you can get the SE with Technology, which gives you navigation, sun roof, and LED lights, still less than your 3 year old Mercedes. But the main problem for me with a Mercedes is that I am unwilling to pay the steep maintenance costs.

I would agree the Passat is a tremendous value, but there is a reason the Mercedes costs substantially more. Value wise, the Passat is a great car, but everyones situation is different. I am willing to pay more for an older Mercedes because with the mileage we will put on it, it should last for 10 years, and in my mind, I am willing to pay more for the engineering and possibly better materials that go into a Mercedes.....and I have driven both and a Mercedes is hard to beat for actual comfort and driving and handling pleasure.

West of the mountain pass from Banning to the Los Angeles County Line is the opposite of the eastern part of the county - i.e. The Coachella Valley. California is a strange environment when compared to the average State, whatever that means!

Took the '11 Kia Soul in for an oil change and new wiper blades yesterday afternoon. Pretty much standard stuff there, yep.
What I wanted to fix was the car has been occasionally pulling to the left. I asked for a tire rotation and if I might need one also a FE alignment. The mechanic huddled with me before he rotated to tell me that he would test drive the car after the tire rotation to assess the need for an alignment.
Well, when he was done he said it might have pulled a tad to the right for him but not at all to the left. He suggested I take the car, drive it and come back Monday if you feel it still needs work.
I paid the bill and the Mrs. and I went about our way. Nice Soul cruisin', lads. No pull at all. He told me that the brake pads are good, and the tires are at 8/32's IIRC. Just worn about 2/32's so far, with even wear all around. I put the Kia in the garage we got home last night. Next up is one of those $6 automatic washes, later today or tomorrow. It's got oak tree leaf light brown washoff on it everywhere, plus Kansas City road crew de-icer on its undercarriage ta get sprayed off. We're at about 77,475 miles on the 2011 model.

I've been watching Barrett-Jackson a lot this week and it strikes me that the vast majority of the bidders (not surprising) and spectators are people in their 50's and above. I think car collecting is on the way to a steep decline in the next 20 years. Same with things like collecting antiques or anything old.
Young people today care a lot less about cars than we did. Most of them want to spend their money on the latest smartphone or gadget. I know lots of young people that don't have a drivers license and rely on parents or Uber to get around. We've seen a lot of collector car prices decline in the past 5 years and I think it's going to get a lot worse.
It's sad for folks like us to see this decline but that's just the progression of things.

They were talking about a new Presidential Limo that President Trump was supposed to ride in for the parade, etc. Cadillac had assured them that it would be there and be ready. The Passat had a huge rear seat area, but it had a short hood and cab forward design. Doesn't look as nice, and it isn't as well balanced....drives more like a van or a bus. 9. Its specs will not impress you. Burdened with lugging a rumored 20,000 lbs. worth of Beast around, the diesel engine isn't a rocket. Hitting 60 mph from a complete stop takes about 15 seconds, which is more than just about any new car we can think of, and the big car's top speed is said to max out at 60 mph. In addition, all that weight makes it a guzzler, sipping fuel at a rate of 8 mpg.
I can't live with any of those whopping specs. Plus it's a Caddy. :@

I doubt an armored limo could stop an RPG though. That's how they got Somoza of Nicaragua, with an RPG-7. They knew the car had frontal armor, which could deflect a rocket, so they attacked from the side and blew it up.
It was a Mercedes, and WIKI says that although the car was destroyed, the engine kept ticking right over.
Probably not something for a Mercedes ad, however.

I decided to look at my broken recliner to see what was the matter with it.
Turns out, at one of the pivot points, the screw had backed out.
I used an allen wrench to put it back together and it's just like new.
Saved myself between $1700- $2000, instead of replacing it.
