I am looking at a 2015 limited with the tech package. Are there any options that you would recommend? And what would you consider fair additional costs for OTD?

Jerry, I just bought this exact car for $40,466 (not including doc fee, tax, title, etc). One option they had included that I didn't know to remove was the floor mats. This is a $399 option for cheap $60 floor mats. I replaced them with $80 toyota factory rubber floor mats already. Our car is in the southeast and they muscled in the $699 toyoguard junk too. A REALLY good price on the car would be $39,300 but demand is high and Limiteds with only the driver tech package are hard to source from what I could tell.

We waited about 4 weeks for our car.

Been looking for Highlander Limited AWD with Driver Technology Package. Tried the Costco Auto Program. The way it works is Invoice Price ($40206) plus flat fee $750 = $40956 (includes destination charge). Other costs to be added: $595 dealer fee, sales tax, and $21. Only included options are floor mats and Driver Tech Package. I thought it was an okay deal, just not a great deal. Inventory wise, there were about 29 Limited AWD in the southeast back in mid October. I'm sure there are more models available now.

This website has been very helpful. Wished I notice there was a better deal in MA. Anyway I purchased a Gray/Gray XLE AWD with bench seat this Sunday at Jim Coleman Toyota (zip code 20817). Sale price was $35,140. (freight included), dealer processing charge $300.NJ tax and registration ($2,760), OTD ($38,200). True Car quoted me in NJ for 36,731, therefore saved $1591. They were nice enough give me a full tank of gas without me asking.

    Texas - I just bought a
Vehicle: 2015 Highlander XLE FWD V6 Blizzard Pearl (special color) with Ash Leather
Options: mud guards and cargo cover
    MSRP $37,893

Dealer included at no cost: tint ($399 msrp) and door cups\edge guards ($125 msrp)
    Paid $34,750 + TT&L

Dealer also waived their in/out fee of $500 fee (which should have been $250 max)
*An in/out is a transaction is one where the seller finds a private buyer (who usually pays more than the dealer trade-in offer) and uses the dealership to process the paperwork. This allows the seller to apply the sale price of the old vehicle against the sale price of the new car (just as if it was traded) to reduce the amount of sales tax (which is 6.25% in Texas).

TrueCar was $35,934 (not including tint).

Just struck a deal on an XLE AWD for $34,750 plus TTL. True car for my zip is 36,603.  TMV is 36,907 and invoice is 35,305.
I'm pretty happy with this deal, especially with getting a decent number on my trade after some back and forth.
  • scooter028scooter028 Member Posts: 5
I have a follow up question regarding buying experiences.  Since the dealer didn't have my preferred color, I'm waiting until they get one in, which I'm told will be a max of two weeks. We have a signed agreement with the numbers. I'm wondering what I can expect when going in for final delivery. Will they try to squeeze some extra fees in? What should I be aware of? Thanks for any input for this new car buying newbie.
  • forkcarsforkcars Member Posts: 10
    Congratulations!!!That's a super great deal.
So, after TTL, what's your total OTD price?
If the OTD price is close to the truecar's number, definitely it is a super good deal, almost the best deal!

No worries about the extra fee, but do prepare for waiting for more weeks since the delivery always get delayed.

I expect 6% sales tax (PA) and other fees of about $200, so OTD of $37,035, so it's a little above Truecar's price. Hopefully it's not much more than that when I take delivery.

    The price is almost best!
You are the KING of car deal hunting.
Everyone in this forum should be advised that your target OTD is truecar estimate number.
    I hate dealers!!!!!
I wish the supermarket sell cars directly.

So like I posted earlier, my 2015 XLE AWD is scheduled to be built on 12/3/14. My dealer told me little about it except a temporary VIN number. Has anyone one bought a car this way? How long should I except for the delivery?

So total otd was 36,732.03. I opted for the extended warranty which added an additional 1,645 for a total of 38,377.03.
The car came with body side molding,  bumper applique,  and floor mats which they didn't charge me for.

How long did it take to actually buy the Highlander when you actually went in to the dealer to do the deal?

This is for FWD. Adding in GA ad valorem taxes, doc fee, and a few other junk fees got us to an even $44k.

Limited fwd 39,900 all in . Includes nc 8%sales tax tags and fees. I think it is high but the southeast is tough. Would of settled for XLE with quad bucket seats but could not find in area only bench seats . Was quoted 37,700 for special order. Mid January before delivery. Checked truecar and feel good. Limited inventory makes it hard.

    Hi,

I'm getting pricing on a 2015 6 cyl AWD Limited Platinum with factory tow hitch. I have a TrueCar price of $41,486 from one dealer. TrueCar labels this price as "unusually low".

I don't know much about TrueCar. Would you say this is a good price?

    thanks,

Picking up my base XLE today from Acton Toyota in MA, attitude Black with grey interior. Negotiated by email with 3 different dealers to $35,502.94 for an out the door price of $38200. I'm pretty sure one could get the price lower but I thought it was an OK deal.

Looking for feedback. I am in SC. Looking at a Highlander Limited with no options. Black ext/ Tan int

True Car is $37,320. I have been quoted a lowest price of $37,300 out the door including tax, tag, title.

Is this a good deal? Can I get them do better? I had best success asking other dealers for the best price once I had a low price and I have gone down from there.

Also if I added in the Driver Tech Package how much more should I expect to pay? Invoice is $1266 vs the $1400. The True Car with this option added is $38,586.

This is the first time I have ever bought a car myself.

The out the door price seemed too good for it to be an AWD one, but I thought it best to ask. Invoice is $37,259 on the FWD, so you still have a great quote since your price is almost that low, and includes your taxes and fees.

I don't know if you can get the Tech option thrown in for invoice (or under). Sounds like you may be able to get close to invoice on it.

Overall it looks like you are doing great. You can keep shopping the quote or wait till the end of the month and hope a dealer needs to make a sale to make the monthly quota, but that's more work and the payout, if any, may not be worth it.

    Enjoy the new ride!

I'm looking at leasing the 2015 Highlander AWD Limited Platinum, fully loaded. 36 months, 12k miles, Portland Oregon. Any idea what the going adj cap cost, MF and residual % is? MSRP I found when I built it online is $44,675, and I think invoice is $41,218. I thought it was actually going to be higher than that, so I'm interested in current lease terms. Also curious if there might be 2015 lease incentives yet.

    Thanks!

Also looking to buy or (most likely lease) a 2015 Highlander AWD Limited Platinum with tow package w/wiring harness, all weather mats/cargo, body side moulding, crossbars and remote start. The MSRP is 46.6 and the truecar savings are about $4400 giving a 42.3 without tax, tags & title.

In terms of leasing.....on this model, the residual is quoted as 60% and MF as 0.00180 for best credit score.

That sounds about right ... Highlander leases are pretty expensive, given how popular they are. Be aware that the residual quoted doesn't necessarily mean that all options are included. Toyota has a funny way of dealing with leases - even the dealers have to look things up for a specific unit in their inventory.

My negotiation strategy that I have settled on (at least to start) is to work down from an MSRP for car and options above. Since the MSRP of the car and options is 46.6, I have asked for an 11% discount off MSRP for a sales price of $41,502. Then will add in TTL $79 and 499 dealer documentation fees (they all seem to have something like this) and sales tax of 4.05% (Virginia). I am hinging deal on getting 7K trading allowance on my 2012 Honda Pilot. Will then request the lease for 36 mo/36000 miles with the 60% residual (high but actually lowers payments but makes lease buyout higher) and MF of 0.0018 for prime + credit. Maybe will send to 5 dealers and ask the one who can meet or exceed to email me....I don't like to mess around at dealer...want everything sorted BEFORE I walk in.

I am getting a quote of $35900 for XLE with Towing package, White Blizzard with Ash interior. Good price? This is in SoCal.
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
@wowsam, whatever works for you is the way to go.

There's a lot different ways to get to the same selling price - there's a recent debate going on around here about whether to offer a price yourself or get quotes first (so you don't offer too much) and then play the dealers off each other. Others like to start their "formula" with invoice, but that's an issue too, since invoice isn't a "real" number either. Dealers get holdback and spiffs and bonuses from the manufacturer so the real cost of a car to them is lower than invoice - sometimes quite a bit lower.

You have another wrinkle with the trade in. If you are near a CarMax it helps to see what price they would give you.

  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454

I am getting a quote of $35900 for XLE with Towing package, White Blizzard with Ash interior. Good price? This is in SoCal.

For a 90210 zip code (hey, what else would someone not in CA use? B) ), I get these numbers:

    Invoice - $35,835

    MSRP - $39,284

    True Market Value $37,818

I assumed you're shopping AWD since you are looking at the towing package, but it's SoCal, so if you want FWD, then you can use my link to Build and Price your own Highlander. Those numbers include destination too btw. For the AWD model, your quote is right at invoice and well under the "average" TMV price, so you're doing good.

You could take your current quote and shop it around. I don't know your dealers there, but Carson Toyota used to do a lot of "internet" sales, so it'd be good to get a price from them at least. Good luck!
  • klingon1000klingon1000 Member Posts: 5
Yes, I was looking for an AWD.

Also got some quotes on LE Plus, AWD with towing package at $34,322 (white blizzard with ash interior).

Any recommendations on LE plus compared with XLE? Will be using mostly for city driving with some excursions into mountains / desert.

Hm, I'm not that up on the style levels. But I'd go with the XLE because of this from our review:

"The four-cylinder Highlander LE is rated to tow up to 1,500 pounds. An LE or LE Plus V6 is rated up to 2,000 pounds. A properly equipped Highlander XLE or Limited (with standard heavy-duty radiator, alternator and supplemental oil cooler) can tow up to 5,000 pounds."

For towing, it's really, really nice to have that extra margin, even if you never plan to get close to the lower towing limits of the Plus.

Looks like the XLE comes standard with leather seats. Does anyone know if this is real leather or softex or something? Additionally, does anyone know who the supplier of leather / seats for Toyota Highlander is?

Like most cars, the seats are "leather trimmed". That usually means that the part that touches you is leather, and the rest is matching vinyl..
