I would like to get some advice on a surround sound system for me car. It has the stock navigation system in it already, but I would like to add a surround sound processor, center channel speaker, and DVD-Audio player. How would something like this be integrated into the navigation system? I would to keep the stock stereo and navigation system and the in-dash 6 CD player, but I want the ability to play DVD-Audio discs. I came up with some drawings. I would find a DVD-Audio player, connect that to the surround sound processor via the optical digital output from the DVD-Audio player, and then connect the surround sound processor to 4 apmplifiers. The first amplifier would drive the left and right front speakers, the second amp would drive the left and right rear speakers, the third would drive a sub, and the fourth would drive the center channel speaker. How would I hook the speakers up to the surround sound processor and the stock stereo and navigation system so I can still play CDs from the in-dash 6 CD changer, XM radio, and navigation prompts, yet still have the ability to listen to DVD-Audio discs when I want?

I have a Graphite 2004 EX V6 with the spoiler wing. I'm new to this site, so don't know how I can get you a picture, but I have one, if you'll let me know how to get it to anybody who's interested

Anyone here able to help with advise regarding the 2004 Automatic Shift knob. I personally think the shift knob is too tall and I was trying to change it to a more modern and smaller knob... it didn't quite work -- it was supposebly a "universal" automatic shift knob.... anyone have any experience with changing out their factory automatic shift knob?

The one I bought was a Burlwood and leather (round) knob from one of those car accssories sites.

Has anyone tried this to control the ipod via the steering wheel controls?

I am currently using the aux input adapter on the accord head unit (no dvd or nav) to bring the audio in from the ipod. This looks interesting, it not only pipes the audio in, it allows forward/backward control from the steering wheel and charges the ipod all with one cable.

I bought The Metal looking trim kit from Handa-accessories.com. The shipping takes about 3 days and I installed them on the same day I received but one part was missing. I called and left voice mail and emailed same time. Next day, I got a Fedex shipment from Handa-acc! what a fast service! then, I received the email from the support ppl for apology. I just want to tell other guy here that the site above is quite safe and very reliable. I am not sure if it is ok to post here :)

Glad to hear you had a good experience! And yes, it's okay to say that. :-)

Handa-accessories is awesome. We have used them several times and their customer service has always been great.
  • hondaonlyhondaonly Member Posts: 5
How was the installation process? What I am trying to find out is that can amateur handle the process. Because I want to have that same kind of trim but not willing to pay too much money for labor.
    Thanks

Does anyone have the temperature gauge pointer rise to the middle of the gauge as soon as you start your engine? It's happening to my 04accord ex who is a week old baby with only 50miles in total mileage. It never happened to my 99 accord. Please help!!
    Thanks
  • atlantabennyatlantabenny Member Posts: 735
It's probably a defective sensor since the engine is stone cold on start-up. Even an overheating motor with a working gauge will have the needle at lowest position on initial fire-up and rise as it runs. Warranty should cover replacement.

    Hi,

I just bought my first Accord 2002 LX w/o ABS, and I am going to upgrade the brake system, such as adding ABS, changing the calipers and pads, etc. Could you guys give some advice? Is it easy to add the ABS system?

    Thanks!

    UCSC
  • anonymouspostsanonymousposts Member Posts: 3,802
Even if you could add ABS to a car aftermarket (which I don't think is feasible) it would probably void any warranty you have left as well as create a safety issue if not installed properly. If ABS was that important then you should've bought the EX model which has standard ABS. The 2002 was mostly unchanged from the 1998 so you could have gone back a couple of years in age and gotten the EX w/ ABS for the same price as your LX.

It is very easy to install. I have never installed ANY AUTO ACCESSORIES in my life before this installation. Each trim part is basically 'Brushed Aluminum color' plastic piece with 3M double-side tape. all you have to do is: just aim and stick it :) I honestly say I may misinstall the small part right next to steerling wheel by 1/100 inch but other than that.. everything else were installed almost perfect. only warning I got from the instruction manual is that those need to be installed on hot temperature(>65 degree). I guess it has something to do with 3M tape.
BTW, I highly recommend to do this! my interior looks TONS better!!!!
  • slawendaslawenda Member Posts: 101
For those of you who have installed the metal trim kit on the Accord interior--how do you like it? What color was your car to begin with? I am thinking of adding it to the black leather interior--has anyone done this? Furthermore, does anyone have any pictures you can share in this forum? The only online picture I know of is with a beige interior--poor color combination in my opinion. Thanks.

and my accord EX v6 with NAV has silver and black interior. This trim is terrific. as I posted above, 'Metal look trim' is actually 'Brushed Aluminum' color which matches your other silver interior exactly. I enjoy more and more everyday as I just look at it. I wouldn't recommend any wood trim to any tan color accord owners though.. it looks fake and not that great.

I recently purchased a 2004 Honda Accord, and the only thing I really don't like about the car is the rear deck styling, so I had the dealer in install the rear deck spoiler. The problem is that they installed it off center. In addition to that visual problem, the offset apparently affects the fit because is it lifted off of the top of the trunk lid on one side and off of the vertical part of the trunk lid on the other side.

I am taking it back to the dealer this Friday and was wondering if anyone has had experience with this issue or any suggestions.

I am at a loss for how they are going to fix the problem short of giving me a new trunk lid or a new car, as I now have 4 misplaced holes in my trunk lid. By the way, they also neglected to install a fastener in one of the four holes, but installing that fastener would not affect the off center issue.
  • atlantabennyatlantabenny Member Posts: 735
I once convinced a dealer to swap a same-color bumper for the one they drilled holes on, during the pre-delivery prep, for the dealer nameplate. Your case is even stronger for reasons of potential leaks, etc.

While I suggest a friendly, "collaborative" approach to ease the process, mentioning BBB would have to be a final recourse if the dealer is recalcitrant.
  • twobigdogztwobigdogz Member Posts: 14
Fortunately, my dealer recognized right away that it was a poor installation, and did not try to argue that it should be acceptable. Also fortunately there was an easy fix. It turns out that the specified hole size leaves some room to play around the bolts, in my case enough to move the spoiler into the correct position. A very small movement makes the difference between a perfect fit and a bad fit. It makes sense that Honda would design it this way. Otherwise, anything less than absolutely perfect position for the holes would not work.

In recognition of how badly it was installed the first time, the dealer extended the warranty. So - while I was extremely unhappy with the initial work, I am pleased with the dealer response.

I have a Graphite 2004 EX with dark gray interior color, and I am thinking of adding metallic trim kit to it. Has anybody did it before? How does it look? Also if I don't like the result after installing the kit, can I still remove it or change to another color? Thanks for any help with these questions.
  • atlantabennyatlantabenny Member Posts: 735
Suggest sticking the parts temporarily with clear tape and see how they look in both subdued and bright light. Just return the kit if you don't like it.

Once installed with the original adhesive, the parts can still be removed but without breaking them; blow-heating could soften the adhesive but also warp the plastic parts. Once removed, however, the adhesive residue can be cleaned off with isopropyl alcohol/GooGone/kerosene-water mix.

I've installed 2 of these OEM kits on our two 03 Accords (one that's graphite pearl/grey) with great satisfaction as to results. I chose dark burlwood over brushed aluminum because I wanted an understated effect. But the aluminum kit is also great if you like it; it matches perfectly the material of the factory installed pieces.

Has anyone seen pictures of a 2003-2004 Honda Accord EX V6 with 2004 Acura TL wheels? I'm thinking of replacing the 16" wheels with the 17" wheels from the Acura TL.
  • atlantabennyatlantabenny Member Posts: 735
There's a photo of a coupe with the rims in a Honda enthusiasts' forum.

They look good but a couple of things to consider: a) the +45 offset and the 235mm tire width would probably cause rim/fender rub with a full car load, and b) flatspotting and balancing difficulties associated with early issues of the factory Turanzas.

If a full car load is rare and the tires are the improved Bridgestones, they're a good buy.
  • gatrhumpygatrhumpy Member Posts: 126
Where is the Honda enthusiasts forum?

I rarely drive the car with ANY passengers in it at all. The tires that are on the car now are Michelins, but I'm looking to just buy something off eBay or something that includes both the rims AND tires already mounted so I can just take off the old 16" wheels and replace them with the 17" wheels. Is this possible?
  • atlantabennyatlantabenny Member Posts: 735
The 04 TL rims selling on eBay could have the early factory-equipped Bridgestone Turanzas which couldn't be balanced. Acura has been replacing the tires under warranty. Just make sure the set you're getting has the upgraded tires.

Email me for the forum url; it also has info on the tire batch numbers.

I am extremely interested in a device that would allow my wife to watch DVDs while driving. I have designed a plastic device that fits into the lower half of the left AC duct right above navigation screen that would prevent me from watching movies while the car is in motion. I have heard about the Pioneer AVC-RGB1 unit that would allow this, but it's extremely hard to find. I guess I need something that would convert composite video (NTSC) to RGB analog video like the navigation screen accepts. Has anyone had any luck with this type of thing? Does anyone know where I can find a Pioneer AVC-RGB1 converter? What about other options?

It seems as if many have asked this kind of a question before, but I haven't seen a consensus, practical answer yet (perhaps for a reason). I am considering purchasing an Accord sedan but probably will want to upgrade the audio system to make it more powerful, at least with cleaner sound at higher volumes, and thus less distortion. I don't need thumping bass but at least clean, powerful, and rich bass such as that which might be heard on a more expensive luxury car. I also am not one to install everything by myself, so for me the most practical thing would be to have a place such as "Best Buy" or "Circuit City" do everything. I imagine it might involve an amp or two, and probably new speakers, but it seems as if everyone has different opinions on how to do this. It also seems as if there are different opinions about how technically difficult upgrading this particular model is.

Lastly, of course, I don't want to spend a fortune--I am interested in the best bang for the buck (no more than 800 dollars or so). Thanks!
  • slawendaslawenda Member Posts: 101
As a follow-up to my last question, can one simply had a multi-channel amplifier to the Accord's system and have a dramatic improvement in sound? Or are the speakers also weak and need an upgrade? How easily are they replaced in the Accord sedan? (I would have a professional do it).

Also, does anyone know if one can upgrade the sedan's sound system with that of the coupe?

I'm about to purchase the Accord V6 with Navi. I'm a gadget geek and really want the bluetooth capability that the Acura TL has, but don't want to fork over the $8000 or so more for the Acura. I've read in previous posts that the Navi system for the Accord is the same as the one for Acura's TSX and TL. Does anyone know if it's possible to find or purchase from Acura the bluetooth module and do a custom install on the Accord?

Second question--if that's not possible, does anyone have experience with the new Bluetooth products made by Sony Ericsson or Motorola that are hardwired? Does the mute stereo function work?

Final question--does anyone know if bluetooth is a possible option for the 2005 model year? Any indication of other options?
  • blaneblane Member Posts: 2,017
Sorry for the cross post but...

CDMA wireless technology has over 75 million users in North America, and doesn't presently use Bluetooth to any significant degree. GSM wireless technology, that sells more phones that are compatible with Bluetooth, has only about 24 million users in North America.

Recently, there have been concerns expressed in the technical media about Bluetooth security problems. Perhaps those are some of the reasons why Honda hasn't chosen to offer it.
  • slawendaslawenda Member Posts: 101
Does anyone know the power ratings on the factory Sedan speakers? I am still trying to figure out if adding an amplifier will make a substantial difference alone, or if upgraded speakers are needed.

Lastly, has anyone noticed this: while using the Crutchfield website, I entered Accord EX sedan with navigation to see "what fits my car". To my surprise, the website said that none of their 6.5" speakers fit the car!!! What gives? Is there something structurally about the door or panel that the speakers use that makes it impossible to find a different / upgraded pair that fit? There were plenty on the website that apparently fit the rear 6x9's. Advice regarding these questions and my previous posts are greatly appreciated--I think many people have the same questions, too. Thanks.

    2004 EX-V6 Sedan w/Navi
    -----------------------------

When tuning to XM bands, I notice that the volume (signal strength) is much lower than on the other bands. One must turn up the volume much more on the XM band than on the FM band, for example. And the sound isn't quite as good either (save for the normal FM static). Also, when you switch from XM to FM you have to quickly turn down the volume because the difference is that noticeable. I realize that I can add an amp to the overall system but I was wondering if there was a way to boost the XM signal (between the ant. and the receiver) other than just adding an amp to the speaker output. Your thoughts are appreciated.
  • briansbluetoybriansbluetoy Member Posts: 50
I had the same problem with the aftermarket xm receiver. While I loved the idea and mega channels, I ended up returning it. When I cancelled my xm service I told the service rep that I wanted to add stuff to my stereo that made it sound better not worse. The volume in the XM rec'vr is flat out insufficent.

Honda has a big stake in XM radio so I would not expect much sympathy from them.

One thing you do have is an excellent factory install!

    good luck

I posed a couple of questions recently about practical recommendations for upgrading the sound on the stock sedan stereo, and still haven't heard from anyone. I went to Best Buy today, and the salesperson there recommended a Pioneer 4-channel amp (approx 280 peak watts) in addition to four new speakers, the 2 in the rear (6x9s) and the 2 in the front (6.5s). He suggested leaving the tweeters alone. He also suggested a 4-channel line converter, which he told me would reduce some of the noise from the amplification. The rough estimate for the total job is approx. between 600-800 dollars, depending on specific models of parts chosen and whether or not I opt for any extended warranties.

Regarding the front speakers and the reportedly difficult removal and installation (based on reports from this board), he told me not to worry, that their experts have many tools and do thousands of installs without any trouble. However, he had no specific comments on the 7th generation Accord sedan. He seemed to be talking in very general terms.

Altogether, his advice sounded reasonable to me, which on paper would take the stock 120 watt system and essentially convert it into a 280 watt system. In this way, it would be similar at least in power to higher-end stereos seen on more expensive cars or upgrades. And hopefully this will produce sound much more crisp and full, with smooth bass and less distortion at higher volumes.

So what do you guys think? Sound like a good idea? Has anyone done more or less what this guy suggested? Did you do it yourself or have a professional do it? Any problems? Glad you did it or a waste? Thanks.

If you do a search in this thread myself and a few others had a decent discussion about upgrading speakers in an '04 Accord.

Here is my system in my 04 LX:
    Alpine 9815 HU
MB Quart 6.5" component speakers in front
Alpine Type R 6x9s in the back

Total cost: $750. I installed the HU and rear speakers myself. I paid Tweeter to do the 6.5s.

If you are not going to upgrade the head unit, I would first install new speakers and see if you like the sound. The amp might not make that big of a difference.

Not upgrading the tweeter is nonsense - any real installer should be able to do both the midwoofer and tweeter. Warning about CC/Best Buy: they wanted to cut holes in my front doors to install the 6.5" speakers. Tweeter did it without cutting anything. If your installer wants to chop your doors apart, go somewhere else.

As far as how difficult it was, replacing the rear 6x9s takes about 15 minutes. I mount my head unit in the cubby-hole with a $30 adapter and it took about 1/2 hour. If you don't like that look (or don't want to lose your cubby-hole) there is an adapter that will replace your factory stereo and A/C controls. It runs about $150.
The front 6.5" speakers were the biggest pain so I paid to have them done.

I am also thinking of stereo spekar(and maybe amp) upgrade in my EX. Please, let us know how it goes.

I wish I can provide you good advice but I don't know much about car stereo.
The only thing I am sure about (after tons of internet forum reading)is to change stock speakers to Infinity Kappa series (front and back) since the most ppl recommend those with great respect.
  • cwrigh01cwrigh01 Member Posts: 23
I have seen pics of an 03 sedan with the 04 TL wheels--perhaps on V6p.net. I didn't care for the look--the wheels are too "chunky" IMO, but the offset was nice. I went with the 6-speed coupe wheels (from HandA, the price is a relative bargain), and love the look, especially now that I added the splash guards and rear lip spoiler. It's very stock looking, and I have gotten a ton of compliments.

I did a stereo upgraded 5 months ago on my 03 Accord. I have a 4 channel amps to push the 4 interior speakers. One mono amp for the 10" sufwoofer. The front speakers were upgraded to a pair of components (infinite reference)(best bang for the buck). The rears were upgraded to a pair of two ways speaker (infinitey kappa). I kept the factory Head unit, which require me to used 3 inline converters. If you upgrade speakers, u need amps that go with that. Otherwise, it will sound like stock. Infinite has been known to produce crispy sound. Also it is not a good idea to upgrade your system at best buys or circirt city. I bought mine to Tweeter. I think Car toys may be a good place also. I hope those info help you guys. If you need additional information on this subject, just do a search on this forum for speaker upgrades or my my nick, regulatex, you will find alot of discussion on this subject before. Good luck you guys!

Thank you for your input. I had done a search in this board but found it mostly technical, especially regarding installation, without actually summarizing the big picture for those like me who probably won't be installing speakers or amps myself. I wanted to get an overview of whether it's worth it to upgrade system, and what to do buy that will realistically and practically be worth the money.

Regarding my initial comment about leaving the tweeters alone, I was referring to the speakers in the dash (tweeters) -- the guy at Best Buy recommended getting 4 new speakers- 2 in the front and 2 in the back, but not replacing the ones in the dash (the stock is a 6 speaker system). There will of course be tweeters in the new speakers (i.e. 2 or 3 way for example), but nothing physically new in the dash, where the old tweeter speakers were. I am not sure if this is what you understood or misunderstood from my initial post when I referred to leaving the tweeters alone.

I am assuming you left the speakers in the dash (tweeters) alone. If you did, are they still "live"? Are they still connected to anything in your system? I imagine that driving a new amp into these stock tweeters will probably be a waste (or they could blow!), and that a new 4-channel amp driving 4 new speakers will be plenty. What do you think? Thanks.
  • slawendaslawenda Member Posts: 101
A number of you have said to avoid Best Buy or Circuit City for stereo upgrades. I am curious to find out why -- one of you mentioned that one of them was going to cut holes in your front doors to replace the front speakers, whereas Tweeter wasn't. What are some of your other thoughts or specific experiences?

I mentioned them because in general they have the most store locations available, and they are the least likely to go out of business given their size. Thus, if the something goes wrong down the road, I can first of all find a store (many locations), and second of all, assuming I get an extended warranty, I won't have to worry that the place might be out of business 3 or 4 years from now, when I need to replace a warrantied speaker, or if something comes loose, etc. (knock on wood!) Plus, it seems that given their size and reputation, they can't afford to do bad work!

Am I wrong? Share your thoughts and experiences--I am sure many others like me out there would like to hear your thoughts. If I don't hear from anyone, I will assume all of you are technically inclined and do your own installs, and thus having nothing to say about these companies! If that's the case, more power to you!

IMO I'd upgrade suggest adding a sub. In fact, if costs are a concern, add a 10" sub and amp first and only. Try that and see what you think of the system. Then if you need more, especially clarity, upgrade the speakers.

I see what they are saying about having just four channels total, but you can drive a set of components (Tweets in the dash & mids in the doors) and two 6x9's in the back with a four channel amp....it's still only four channels.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd move the tweets into the doors perhaps near the mirrors just to prevent the reflection from the windshield. Instead I just found a sweet spot in the crossover controls to set them at and fine tuned them with the controls in my stock Navi System.

Overall, I'm very happy with the system.

    Eclipse Components with 4ch amp
    10" Sub and Mono Amp

Don't go cheap on systems....it will sound through.

My problem with them is that the installers are usually high school kids. At my local Tweeter the guys are 'certified' and do some amazing installs. When I brought my Accord in to have the front speakers replaced they were putting LCD panels into a Navigator. There were almost done and it looked stock. I doubt some kid at Best Buy could do that.

Another issue was that Tweeter was actually cheaper than BB/CC.

My last issue is that if you are going to be purchasing the speakers/amp/headunit, a more specialized store will have better brands at the same price points at CC/BB.

RE tweeter location: the installer removed the factory tweeters and put the MB Quart tweeters in their place. I have all of the factory speakers in a box in my basement.

I just installed a K & N Air Filter for my 2004 Honda Accord EX V6 with navigation. The air box is on the right side of the car where the big black hose is attached to. I just removed the four screws with a Philips head screwdriver (the fourth screw was a pain in the butt), took out the old stock air filter (which was clean), and dropped in the new K & N Air Filter. The K & N Air Filter that I used was model number 33-2277. I love it already!

I have my first nick on a red v6 w/ navi. Very small but i am a perfectionist. As are most of you I'm sure. I am wondering if the touch up paint covers up a minor scratch well? Paint matches up exactly or can you tell a small differnce?

I am also looking for some floor mats...I mean I have the basic mats that came with it (tan color) but I don't want them all messed up. I was either thinking of purchasing other mats or getting the premium mats and using the regular mats as my everyday mats. Thoughts..Opinions? Perhaps even buying two sets of the everyday mats? Or anywhere where I can get good everyday mats?

Also, I am looking to make any upgrades that would be beneficial to the look of my car. I do not want to upgrade the radio. (happy enough with it) was thinking of tinting the windows and any other suggestions? I am looking for a classly/luxurious look. I am 25 and don't want anything too over the top. any thoughts are appreciated. THanks
  • rumpletzerrumpletzer Member Posts: 39
I'm SO curious about what everyday mats are... or, rather, what a non-everyday mat event might be??? I'm pretty happy with the mats that came with my EX model. I'm not sure if they're premium or regular. If regular, I wouldn't bother upgrading what I have.

My coup is charcoal grey. I had all five windows tinted, and I added the rear spoiler myself. You should have seen the neighbors when they saw me going at the trunk of my brand new car with a drill! These mods are about all I need to add to this car... I considered the front, side, and rear underside spoilers, but I think I'd rather put the money to better use elsewhere.

Oh, I guess I'll drop in a K&N air filter when the time comes to change out the original. I'll also convert to synthetic oil at the second oil change.

From the spoiler experience, I know that the Honda touch up paint matches perfectly to the stock color of the car. PERFECTLY!
